FEES The fee for each course is included within the course description. Instructors in certain courses will collect supply fees to cover the cost of materials. Fees or credit card numbers must accompany mail reservations in order to be considered. Mail and fax registrations will automatically be accepted unless otherwise notified. LIFELONG LEARNER’S CARD Cheektowaga Senior Citizens, age 60 years or older, are required to have a Lifelong Learner’s Card to receive a senior citizen discount. This card entitles the owner to a discount on some classes. This discount can only be granted at the time of registration and only for courses taken by the individual whose name is on the card. ACADEMIC STUDIES High School Equivalency
Adults who did not graduate from high school can prepare for the TASC. An individualized study plan is designed for each student. Computers and textbooks are used to improve Reading, Math and Writing skills. A flexible schedule allows new students to enter the program at anytime during the year. GRASP (Home High School Equivalency Program) •Must be at least 21 years of age and have a 9th grade reading level. •Start with 1 packet of 12 hours of homework and when that is completed another packet will be ready. •There will be 2 packets that need to be completed each month until you are ready to take the TASC exam. •Tutoring will be made available for anyone in the home study program. •Study in the comfort of your own home.

ACADEMIC STUDIES PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS
Maryvale Community Education is involved in a partnership with Erie Community College to provide services to adults age 18 and over who are preparing to attend college. Free classes in basic math and reading skills, TASC Preparation and English for Speakers of Other Languages will be offered at Maryvale locations to adults who need to brush-up before enrolling at Erie Community College. Students who successfully complete the Pathways to Success program can be quickly enrolled in degree programs at Erie Community College. Classes are offered in the daytime and the evenings. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Maryvale offers a program for adults who have not yet learned to read or speak English and/or need to develop better skills. The class sessions will assist adults in vocabulary-building, conversation practice and understanding written English. Beginner and advanced students are welcome. New students can start anytime. Pre-Collegiate ClassesMaryvale/ECC Pathways Program Is College in your Future? If so, Erie Community College and Maryvale Community Education will be offering Pre-Collegiate Studies. These tuition free courses are designed to be fun and help you develop the skills you need to be successful in college. Please join our team of experts fora a 90-minute discussion on your best approach to the college scene. Send Your Kids to College is a non-profit organization designed to assist you with every step of the college way. Natalie Beilein will discuss the Indigo Assessment for finding and applying to the college that best suits your child’s needs and interests. All-Pro Tutoring and Test Prep will establish a time line for academic preparation for college admission tests, and discuss why it is important to prepare of the SAT and ACT tests. Jeff Boron is a Certified College Planning Specialist and will discuss strategies to reduce the cost of college including information about the SAGE Scholars Tuition Rewards program. AARP Smart Driver Course
This two-session course covers important driving skills, accident prevention and rules of the road. Those who complete the course could qualify for a 10% discount on their automobile liability and collision insurance premiums for three years and have up to 4 violation points subtracted from their license. A $5 non-refundable, non-transferable, pre-registration fee paid in cash or check (made out to Maryvale School System) is necessary. Students must pay the instructor $20 if you are an AARP member or $25 for non-members by a check or money order made out to AARP Smart Driver Course at the first class session. Registration dates cannot be changed for any reason. Your AARP membership card must be shown to the instructor in order to pay the $20 fee. DRIVING Driver Education
This program is offered by Maryvale Community Education as a service to the community. Geared for high school students, participants must be 16 years old by September 12, 2016 and should possess a valid NYS learner’s permit or license. Satisfactory completion necessitates mandatory attendance of 16 sessions of 1.5 hours each of vehicle and 16 sessions of 1.5 hours each of classroom instruction. Upon successful completion, the student qualifies for a Certificate of Completion (form MV285) or an insurance letter. There is a $5 per form replacement fee for any lost completion certificates, insurance letters and/or valid prelicensing certificates. Attendance policy: three absences are permitted (includes both vehicle and/or classroom instruction together) but all absences must be made up by scheduling appropriate driver education activities. Please note that there are no additional fees for makeup classes. A $50 cancellation fee will be charged if withdrawal is made before the program begins. There will be no refunds after the program begins. This course is required to obtain your New York State driver’s license. Anyone attending this class should have knowledge of the driving manual and bring his/her driver’s permit and a pen with them. This course is an introduction to the Art of Classical Foil Fencing. Students will learn how to move, defend and attack using the basic fencing weapon - the foil - in the Classical French style. PLANETARIUM Juno at Jupiter: Unlocking the Secrets of the Jovian System (Grade 3-Adult)
On July 4, 2016, after a five year voyage, NASA’s Juno spacecraft was captured by Jupiter’s gravity and will spend the next 20 months learning about our solar systems beginnings by revealing the origin and evolution of the Jovian system. Join us at the Maryvale Planetarium for this two-week short course about the Juno Mission, NASA’s orbiter will investigate Jupiter’s atmosphere, which will help determine planet formation theory and whether new improved theories are needed. Learn how Juno will look beyond the belts and zones to measure the composition, temperature, cloud motions and other properties of Jupiter. Is there water in Jupiter’s atmosphere, if so, how much? How does the planet’s enormous magnetic force field affect its atmosphere, especially Jupiter’s polar auroras? The Great American Eclipse of 2017! (Grade 3-Adult)
June 8, 1918 was the last time totality crossed our nation from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Where will you be on August 21, 2017 when it happens again? Millions of people across the United States will see nature’s most wondrous spectacle - a total solar eclipse of the Sun. It is a scene of unimaginable beauty! The Moon completely blocks the Sun, daytime becomes a deep twilight, bright stars and planets appear and the Sun’s corona shimmers in the darkened daytime sky. Join us at the Maryvale Planetarium as you prepare for and understand this rare celestial event. During this two-week short course, you will become solar eclipse experts! We’ll explore what you’ll see during the Great American Eclipse, where to go, how eclipses happen, US eclipse history and the best places to see next summers event! In addition, we’ll note total solar eclipses crossing the United States in the near future, specifically on April 8, 2024. Using the planetarium’s hitech star projector, we’ll travel forward in time to witness what the eclipse will look like from Western New York and then compare the same event under path of totality. As in all our short courses at Maryvale, we tour the brightest stars, moon, current visible planets, deep sky objects and the autumn constellations using our digital star projector. YOUTH ACTIVITIES Fencing for Beginners
This course is an introduction to the art of Classical Foil Fencing. Students will learn how to move, defend and attack using the basic fencing weapon - the foil - in the Classical French style. It is a relaxed workout coupled with exposure to the historical origins of this exciting martial art. Great for developing physical agility and mental focus, fencing is also FUN! Fencing develops better eye-hand coordination, physical agility, grace and balance, while promoting cardiovascular fitness and increased confidence and selfesteem. All equipment is provided. Please wear sneakers and comfortable clothing for this course. In this non-competitive co-ed program, kids will be taught basic skills of hockey. These skills include stick handling, passing and shooting. Players use a soft ended floor hockey stick and a ball. Spanish for the Elementary Years (Grades K-5)
Get a head start on the language by joining us for an educationally oriented curriculum that is specifically designed for the K-5 student to learn the Spanish language. This unique and exciting program features foundation vocabulary introduced through games, singing and fun activities. Students are able to compound words and begin forming simple sentences. Early introduction increases the student’s ability to absorb rather than translate the language. Maryvale Youth Wrestling (Ages 6-16)
Wrestling is a combination of speed, strength, balance, knowledge, discipline and determination. This program is designed to teach the fundamentals of wrestling to interested boys and girls. All efforts will be made to match up wrestlers with someone that is around their weight, age and ability. Practices will consist of understanding the sport and scoring. CANCELLATION INFORMATION The full fee will be refunded by check or credit (when paid with charge card) if classes are filled or cancelled. Personal request for cancellation must be made two full business days prior to the start of classes i.e. if the class begins on a Wednesday, cancellation must be made no later than the prior Friday. A $5.00 cancellation fee per class will be charged. Refund checks or credits may take up to 45 days to process. Registration fees will not be refunded for any reason after the first class begins. SCHOOL CLOSING If it should become necessary to close the evening program because of inclement weather, the announcement will be made over WBEN, WKSE (98.5 FM) and WJYE (96.1 FM) between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 PM.
