Quilting - Hunter’s Star

The traditional Hunter’s star quilt pattern was popular long before quilt teacher Linda Hunter was born. However, she feels that this is her special quilt pattern. Learn to make her special pattern in an easy method that requires only squares and half-square triangles to create visual diamonds and arrows. You will learn to make the half-square triangles with a unique, accurate method. The result may be any size, from a pillow or table runner to a full size quilt. Traditionally a striking two color quilt, Hunter’s Star also looks wonderful as a scrap quilt. For design ideas and color suggestions follow Linda’s Pinterest board: Linda J. Hunter - Hunter’s Star. To see past quilt class projects, access Linda’s website: www.hunters-stars. comtechniques. The finished piece may be anything from a candle mat/table runner to a pillow, or even a quilt. There will be time in class to do some relaxing hand piecing, with machine piecing accomplished at home using the instructions provided in class. We will discuss materials needed in the first class. Access Linda’s website at www.hunters-stars. com for photos of previous class projects and other quilt information. Limit 18. (STI-001) Tuesdays, (8 weeks) Begins 9/19 12:30-2:30 PM Fee: $58 SC: $49 Room 278 (Binner Educational Center) Instructor: Linda Hunter Linda Hunter has taught quilting for over 35 years, conducts lectures and workshops and is a quilt appraiser certified by the American Quilter’s Society.

PLANETARIUM Cassini at Saturn: The Grand Finale! (Grade 3-Adult)

Maryvale Graduate; Director/Owner, Mr. K.’s Mobile Dome Planetarium; Show Presenter/Technician, Strasenburgh Planetarium; Planetarium Director/Astronomer, Challenger Learning Center of Lockport.

After almost 20 years in space, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft begins the final chapter of its remarkable story of exploration: its Grand Finale at the ringed planet Saturn. Between April and September 2017, Cassini will undertake a daring set of orbits that is, in many ways, like a whole new mission. Following a final close flyby of Saturn’s moon Titan, Cassini will leap over the planet’s icy rings and begin a series of 22 weekly dives between the planet and the rings. No other mission has ever explored this unique region. What we learn from these final orbits will help to improve our understanding of how giant planets and planetary systems everywhere - form and evolve. On the final orbit, Cassini will plunge into Saturn’s atmosphere, sending back new and unique science to the very end. After losing contact with Earth, the spacecraft will burn up like a meteor, becoming part of the planet itself. Join us at the planetarium for the stars, planets and constellations of the autumn season in your hi-tech digital planetarium. (PLA-001) Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 10/17 7:00-9:00 PM Fee: $19; Maryvale Student Fee: $10 Planetarium-Room 141A (Middle School) Instructor: Paul Krupinski

Juno’s principal goal is to understand the origin and evolution of the giant planet Jupiter. Underneath its dense cloud cover, Jupiter safeguards secrets to the fundamental processes and conditions that governed our solar system during its formation. As our Solar System’s primary example of a giant planet, Jupiter can also provide critical knowledge for understanding the planetary systems being discovered around other stars. With its suite of science instruments, Juno will investigate the existence of a solid planetary core, map Jupiter’s intense magnetic field, measure the amount of water and ammonia in the deep atmosphere, and observe the planet’s auroras. Juno will let us take a giant step forward in our understanding of how giant planets form and the role titans played in putting together the rest of the solar system. Join us at the planetarium for spectacular images of Jupiter from Juno, as well as for the stars, planets and constellations of the autumn season in your hitech digital planetarium.
