FEES The fee for each course is included within the course description. Instructors in certain courses will collect supply fees to cover the cost of materials. ACADEMIC STUDIES High School Equivalency
Adults who did not graduate from high school can prepare for the TASC. An individualized study plan is designed for each student. Computers and textbooks are used to improve Reading, Math and Writing skills. A flexible schedule allows new students to enter the program at anytime during the year. ACADEMIC STUDIES PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS
Maryvale Community Education is involved in a partnership with Erie Community College to provide services to adults age 18 and over who are preparing to attend college. Free classes in basic math and reading skills, TASC Preparation and English for Speakers of Other Languages will be offered at Maryvale locations to adults who need to brush-up before enrolling at Erie Community College. Students who successfully complete the Pathways to Success program can be quickly enrolled in degree programs at Erie Community College. Classes are offered in the daytime and the evenings. Quilting - This is NOT Your Grandmother’s Flower Garden
The hexagon, a six sided figure often called a one-patch in the quilt world, has been a part of popular designs for over 200 years. In the early 19th century it was used in what was called a mosaic quilt. In the 1930’s, we became familiar with it in “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” quilts. Today this little hexagon is knows as a “hexie”. In this class we will explore the hexagon, learning to use it in English Paper Piecing, which is trending now as a hand piecing method. We will work with the basic hexagon designs, and will add some of the new, “fussy cut” patterns. However, we will also learn to machine piece the hexagon, using a couple of different methods, in a few different sizes. Enjoy learning to make any number of designs with these

DRIVING Pre-Licensing Course
This course is required to obtain your New York State driver’s license. Anyone attending this class should have knowledge of the driving manual and bring his/her driver’s permit and a pen with them. This two-session course covers important driving skills, accident prevention and rules of the road. Students must pay the instructor $20 if you are an AARP member or $25 for non-members by a check or money order made out to AARP Smart Driver Course at the first class session. This course is an introduction to the Art of Classical Foil Fencing. Students will learn how to move, defend and attack using the basic fencing weapon - the foil - in the Classical French style. Yoga offers gentle exercises that can dramatically help those with joint pain, osteoporosis, arthritis and stiffness. A well planned series of yoga stretches and postures to establish range of motion, balance, muscle tone, and body awareness is the focus of the class. Yoga and Women’s Wellness Daytime Program
Make sense of your health through yoga, ayurveda and meditation. This eight-week course is designed to assist in the emotional and physical instability of aging. Whether you are 40, 60 or 80 many women suffer with the same problems: anxiety and insomnia; pain; memory loss; decreased bone density; stress; and inevitable transformation. HEALTHY LIVING Ayurveda - The Science of Self Healing
In this practical class we will explore health and healing in relationship to the five elements: air, space, fire, water and earth. A state of health exists when the body is in balance with nature. When the natural rhythms are out of balance this can cause disturbance in the body and the disease process can begin. Ayurveda works directly with individual constitution, diet and lifestyle providing a methodology to rebalance the body. Session one will cover the background and philosophy of Ayurveda; understanding your dosha (constitution); the ayurvedic clock; cleansing and daily routine. Yoga, relaxation and meditation for your dosha will also be included. Session two will be Ayurveda in the kitchen; using food to heal; the six tastes; nutrition and seasonal eating. PLANETARIUM Two Small Pieces of Glass: Everything You Wanted to Know About Telescopes (Grade 3-Adult)
Four hundred years ago, a simple adjustment to a child’s spyglass revealed for the first time an infinite and perplexing universe to our eyes and imaginations. Join us as we learn about telescopes at the Maryvale Planetarium. Understand the different kinds of telescopes - refractors, reflectors, Dobsonians and Cassegrains. Unmask the pros and cons of each type of telescope, how they work, as well as identify different parts and accessories of these amazing tools. Also during this two-week short course, you’ll see our all dome astronomy documentary “Two Small Pieces of Glass The Amazing Telescope” where we follow two students as they interact with a female astronomer at a local star party. Along the way, the students learn the history of the telescope from Galileo’s modifications to a child’s spyglass - using two small pieces of glass - to the launch of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and the future of astronomy. Aiming to engage and appeal to audiences of all ages, the show explores the wonder and discovery made by astronomers throughout the last 400 years. Join us at the Maryvale Planetarium and travel back to the beginning of time to experience the birth of a star. Discover the wonders of our Sun and learn how its incredible energy has supported life on Earth for millennia, but is now threatening our technology and the way of life. Travel to the distant future to discover our Sun’s connection to the universe’s cosmic cycle of life and death. During this two-week short course, you’ll see our all dome astronomy documentary “Sunstruck”, created by the Michigan Science Center in collaboration with NASA and narrated by noted science fiction author Mike Shepherd, who shares the wonders or our own personal star, the Sun. In addition, the audience will gain an enhanced understanding of the Sun and how it impacts our world through space weather. Driven by the Sun, space weather includes the solar wind, geomagnetic storms, solar flares and coronal mass ejections. Learn how the sunspot cycle is related to the frequency of solar storms, discover how our Sun came to support life, how it threatens life as we know it, and how its energy will one day fade away. Join us at the Maryvale Planetarium as we search for the edge of the Solar System. Follow IBEX, Interstellar Boundary EXplorer on its mission to map the farthest reaches of the solar system. See our Sun as never before, as it journeys through the Milky Way Galaxy. Discover how particles of solar wind protect the Earth, and life, from the invisible dangers of deep space and meet the team that made it all possible. During this two-week short course, you’ll see the all dome astronomy documentary “IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar System.” Share in the excitement of scientists investigating the boundary between our Solar System and the rest of the Milky Way Galaxy. This course is an introduction to the art of Classical Foil Fencing. Students will learn how to move, defend and attack using the basic fencing weapon - the foil - in the Classical French style. It is a relaxed workout coupled with exposure to the historical origins of this exciting martial art. Great for developing physical agility and mental focus, fencing is also FUN! Fill out ONE REGISTRATION FORM for each individual who enrolls. When registering children, use the child’s name and include his/her birth date on the registration form; include the parent’s name on the signature line at the bottom of the form. 3.
