PLANETARIUM Celebrating 28 Years of the Hubble Space Telescope (Grade 3-Adult)

From the dawn of humankind to a mere 400 years ago, all that we knew about our universe came through observations with the unaided eye. Then Galileo turned his telescope toward the heavens in 1610. The world was in for an awakening, but little did we know, the best was yet to come. In April of 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched and the window of the universe was opened. Take an amazing tour of space and time “through the eyes” of the Hubble Space Telescope. See why the first images from Hubble were devastatingly disappointing, but after five servicing missions, the eyes of Hubble were corrected and the rest is history. See some of the finest photographs ever released from this orbiting observatory; images of planets of our solar system, massive new stars being born, still shrouded in gas and dust, plus dying stars ejecting jets of material far into space. Peer at galaxies at the edge of the known universe and even see these star cities colliding into each other. In addition, we’ll take a peaceful tour of the stars, planets and constellations of the autumn season with our digital star projector. (PLA-008) Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 10/2 7:00-9:00 PM Fee: $19; Maryvale Student Fee: $10 Planetarium-Room 141A (Middle School) Instructor: Paul Krupinski

Solar Quest! (Grade 3-Adult)

“Solar Quest” is a full dome planetarium short feature that demonstrates how the Sun and Earth are interconnected and that we are “Living with a Star”. High quality animations display solar phenomena such as fusion and light energy as well as solar surface features and events. Granules, solar flares and coronal mass ejections are highlighted. The show discusses the impacts of space weather and how the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field protects all life on Earth. “Solar Quest” features the role of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and how scientists are using it as a way to help identify and predict severe space weather. Actual videos of the Sun from SDO are used

where the audience can actually see the large amount of energy being released. As always, don’t miss our planetarium tour of the bright stars, moon, planets and constellations seen just after dark in the skies of Western New York this Autumn. InSight: Studying the “Inner Space” of Mars (Grade 3-Adult)

In this two-week course we explore NASA’s latest mission to Mars: InSight, scheduled to land on Mars on November 26, 2018. InSight, short for Interior Explorations using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, is a Mars lander designed to give the Red Planet its first thorough checkup since it formed 4.5 billion years ago. It is the first outer space robotic explorer to study in-depth the “inner space” of Mars: its crust, mantle and core. Studying Mars’ interior structure answers key questions about the early formation of rocky planets in our inner solar system - Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars - more than 4 billion years ago, as well as rocky exoplanets. InSight also measures tectonic activity and meteorite impacts on Mars today. As always, don’t miss our planetarium tour of the bright stars , moon, planets and constellations seen just after dark in the skies of WNY this Fall. (PLA-010) Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 11/13 7:00-9:00 PM Fee: $19; Maryvale Student Fee: $10 Planetarium-Room 141A (Middle School) Instructor: Paul Krupinski Maryvale Graduate; Director/Owner, Mr. K.’s Mobile Dome Planetarium; Show Presenter/Technician, Strasenburgh Planetarium; Planetarium Director/Astronomer, Challenger Learning Center of Lockport.
