PLANETARIUM Out There: The Quest for Extrasolar Worlds (Grade 3-Adult)

Target Earth: Extinctions From Space! (Grade 3-Adult)

Comets, Meteors and Asteroids! (Grade 3-Adult)

Maryvale Graduate; Director/Owner, Mr. K.’s Mobile Dome Planetarium; Show Presenter/Technician, Strasenburgh Planetarium; Planetarium Director/Astronomer, Challenger Learning Center of Lockport.Teacher

Join us at the Maryvale Planetarium as we look out into the Milky Way Galaxy for planets beyond our Solar System. This is a story of how human curiosity has driven us to look outwards to discover and explore new and distant worlds. The all dome experience Out There: The Quest for Extrasolar Worlds is a production of The Swiss Museum of Transport Planetarium, directed and produced by Marc Horat, in cooperation with the National Centre of Competence in Research Planets and European Southern Observatory. Don’t miss this, plus a look at the current night sky for April 2018 with Maryvale’s amazing digital planetarium projector. (SPE-097) Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 4/10 7:00-9:00 PM Fee: $19; Maryvale Student Fee: $10 Planetarium-Room 141A (Middle School) Instructor: Paul Krupinski

Our solar system is comprised of one star, eight classical planets, five dwarf planets and over 170 known moons. However, most casual stargazers don’t know the difference between a comet, a meteor or an asteroid. Join us this spring at Maryvale’s Planetarium for our new two-week short course about the small leftover material of the Solar System. You will learn and understand the difference between comets, meteors, meteoroids, meteorites, satellites and asteroids. Could a large comet or asteroid cause mass extinction if it collides with Earth in the future? Come back to the planetarium on May 22 and 29 to find out! Plus join us for a peaceful tour of the stars, planets and constellations of the spring season with our digital star projector. (SPE-098) Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 5/1 7:00-9:00 PM Fee: $19; Maryvale Student Fee: $10 Planetarium-Room 141A (Middle School) Instructor: Paul Krupinski

What killed the dinosaurs and is it coming back? Do large extinctions plague Earth on a regular basis from space, if so, how frequently? Does the Sun have a theoretical companion star in an enormous orbit that strips comets and flings them our way? Could a massive nearby star cause mass extinction if it exploded into a supernova and what’s a safe distance to prevent disaster on Earth? Planet nine, galactic cosmic rays, dark matter and other extinction scenarios will be examined during this new two-week short course at Maryvale’s Planetarium. In addition, don’t miss our planetarium tour of the bright stars, moon, planets and constellations seen just after dark in May 2018. (SPE-099) Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 5/22 7:00-9:00 PM Fee: $19; Maryvale Student Fee: $10 Planetarium-Room 141A (Middle School) Instructor: Paul Krupinski
