LIFELONG LEARNER’S CARD Cheektowaga Senior Citizens, age 60 years or older, are required to have a Lifelong Learner’s Card to receive a senior citizen discount. This card entitles the owner to a discount on some classes. This discount can only be granted at the time of registration and only for courses taken by the individual whose name is on the card. Adults who did not graduate from high school can prepare for the TASC. An individualized study plan is designed for each student. Computers and textbooks are used to improve Reading, Math and Writing skills. A flexible schedule allows new students to enter the program at anytime during the year. Child care problems, working all day, can’t get to class? If you own a computer you can sign up for High School Equivalency preparation and work online any time from home. ACADEMIC STUDIES Fast Track TASC Math Preparation
Raise your TASC Math Subtest pass rate with this free 12-hour program for those who were unsuccessful on the TASC Math Readiness Assessment or who failed the TASC Math Exam Subtest with a minimum score of 400.
Fast Track Testing Skills/Strategies and Reduction of Test Anxiety This 12-hour free program is also available. Eligibility for both of the above includes being at least 21 years of age and previous TASC testers must submit a TASC Transcript. These programs are scheduled to begin in August, 2018. PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS
Maryvale Community Education is involved in a partnership with Erie Community College to provide services to adults age 18 and over who are preparing to attend college. Free classes in basic math and reading skills, TASC Preparation and English for Speakers of Other Languages will be offered at Maryvale locations to adults who need to brush-up before enrolling at Erie Community College. Students who successfully complete the Pathways to Success program can be quickly enrolled in degree programs at Erie Community College. Classes are offered in the daytime and the evenings. Maryvale offers a program for adults who have not yet learned to read or speak English and/or need to develop better skills. If you’re interested in increasing your financial awareness and accountability while also gaining a marketable skill, this course is for you. You’ll learn the basics of doubleentry bookkeeping, while also learning how to analyze and record financial transactions, as well as prepare various financial reports at the end of the fiscal period. Accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll procedures, sales taxes, and various common banking activities will be discussed. DRIVING Driver Education
This program is offered by Maryvale Community Education as a service to the community. Geared for high school students, participants must be 16 years old by July 5 or July 27, 2018 and should possess a valid NYS learner’s permit or license. Satisfactory completion necessitates mandatory attendance of 16 sessions of 1.5 hours each of vehicle and 16 sessions of 1.5 hours each of classroom instruction. Upon successful completion, the student qualifies for a Certificate of Completion (form MV285) or an insurance letter. There is a $5 per form replacement fee for any lost completion certificates, insurance letters and/or valid prelicensing certificates. Attendance policy: three absences are permitted (includes both vehicle and/or classroom instruction together) but all absences must be made up by scheduling appropriate driver education activities. Please note that there are no additional fees for makeup classes. A $50 cancellation fee will be charged if withdrawal is made before the program begins. AARP Smart Driver Course
This six-hour course covers important driving skills, accident prevention and rules of the road. Those who complete the course could qualify for a 10% discount on their automobile liability and collision insurance premiums for three years and have up to 4 violation points subtracted from their license. A $5 non-refundable, non-transferable, preregistration fee paid in cash or check (made out to Maryvale School System) is necessary. Students must pay the instructor $20 if you are an AARP member or $25 for non-members by a check or money order made out to AARP Smart Driver Course at the class. This course is an introduction to the art of Classical Foil Fencing. Students will learn how to move, defend and attack using the basic fencing weapon - the foil - in the Classical French style. It is a relaxed workout coupled with exposure to the historical origins of this exciting martial art. Great for developing physical agility and mental focus, fencing is also FUN! Fencing develops better eyehand coordination, physical agility, grace and balance, while promoting cardiovascular fitness and increased confidence and self-esteem. All equipment is provided. PLANETARIUM When Mars Comes Near (Grade 3-Adult)
Will Mars look as big as the Moon on a certain date this summer? Join us in the airconditioned planetarium as we investigate the planet Mars and the possible email return of the Mars Hoax. Earth takes 465.25 days to orbit the Sun once. Mars takes about 687 days, therefore the Earth catches up and passes Mars about every 26 months. However, on occasion, Earth comes closer to Mars than average and by the summer of 2018, Mars will be at its brightest since 2003, when it was closer and brighter in our sky than in some 60,000 years. In this two-week short course, you will learn about the so-called red planet Mars; the missions which have orbited, landed and even wandered across the surface of Mars for decades, plus much more. The Search for Messier Objects (Grade 3-Adult)
Meet Mr. Charles Messier, French astronomer and comet hunter, most notable for publishing an astronomical catalog consisting of nebulae, star clusters (both open and globular) and galaxies that came to be known as the famous 110 Messier objects. Using the airconditioned, digital planetarium, we’ll search, locate, identify and name the most famous of all Messier’s objects such as M1, M13, M31, M42, M45, M57 and even M101. In addition, you will understand the difference between galaxies, clusters and nebulae. SCUBA DIVING Scuba Diving
Learning to scuba dive is easy and fun! Our “Learn to Dive” program will have you exploring underwater in just a few short weeks. Students will participate in weekly pool sessions and four classroom sessions (classroom sessions are scheduled with your instructor). Upon successful completion of the classroom training and pool requirements, students will then complete two days of open water dives to earn their scuba diver certification. Participants must be in reasonably good health and able to swim. Lab fees include all pool fees and the use of required scuba equipment for the pool and open water dives. Students must provide their own mask, snorkel, fins and booties for both pool and open water sessions. Students are also required to have the NAUI Scuba Diver Kit (available from your instructor). The Power Station Volleyball Camp at Maryvale High School
Now celebrating our 30th year, the Power Station Volleyball Camp draws athletes from across western New York, and features well-respected high school and collegiate volleyball coaches, as well as collegiate players. This camp will provide instruction and daily skills training in competitive volleyball, with opportunities to practice newly acquired skills in game situations. YOUTH ACTIVITIES/INDEX Maryvale Basketball Camp
This competitive camp is for boys entering the 5th through 9th grades as of the Fall of 2018. The course objectives include: presenting the fundamentals of basketball so that each player will increase his understanding of the sport; instructing on an individual and group basis so as to develop each player’s basketball skills; exposing each player to the philosophies and techniques of various coaches and players; and providing an enriching experience and to develop competitive spirit, athletic skill and good sportsmanship through individual instruction and supervised competition. CANCELLATION INFORMATION The full fee will be refunded by check or credit (when paid with charge card) if classes are filled or cancelled. Personal request for cancellation must be made two full business days prior to the start of classes i.e. if the class begins on a Wednesday, cancellation must be made no later than the prior Friday. A $5.00 cancellation fee per class will be charged. Refund checks or credits may take up to 45 days to process. Registration fees will not be refunded for any reason after the first class begins. SCHOOL CLOSING If it should become necessary to close the evening program because of inclement weather, the announcement will be made over WBEN, WKSE (98.5 FM) and WJYE (96.1 FM) between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 PM.
