As our Solar System’s primary example of a giant planet, Jupiter can also provide critical knowledge for understanding the planetary systems being discovered around other stars. With its suite of science instruments, Juno will investigate the existence of a solid planetary core, map Jupiter’s intense magnetic field, measure the amount of water and ammonia in the deep atmosphere, and observe the planet’s auroras. Juno will let us take a giant step forward in our understanding of how giant planets form and the role these titans played in putting together the rest of the solar system. Join us for spectacular images of Jupiter from Juno, as well as for the stars, planets and constellations of January 2018 in your hi-tech digital planetarium. Dark: Understanding Dark Matter! (Grade 3-Adult)
The search for dark matter is the most pressing astrophysical problem of our time - the solution to which will help us understand why the Universe is as it is, where it came from, and how it has evolved over billions of years - the unimaginable depths of deep time, of which a human life is but a flickering instant. But in the instant, we can grasp its immensity and, through science, we can attempt to understand it. Come experience dark matter with the planetarium’s 20 minute all-dome digital visualization Dark: Understanding Dark Matter! Dr. Alan Duffy, a brilliant young astronomer from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) at the University of Western Australia - who creates simulations of dark matter evolution inside supercomputers. Alan introduces us to the idea of dark matter, why astronomers think it exists, and explains why radio astronomy is very well-suited to its discovery. Join us for all things dark, as well as a peaceful tour of the stars, planets and constellations of the winter season.
