7th Annual Ryan Purcell Memorial Run - 2018

Page 1

Thank You. We can never express the extent of our gratitude for such a tribute to Ryan. The outpouring of support inspires us to see beyond our loss and appreciate how much he meant to others. Sharing his loss with you lightens our burden. Ryan would want something good to follow from his death. His body lives on through transplantation services. His spirit lives on here today. Let us all be inspired. Love, Mom and Dad

Tom McDonnell

The Michael J. Diggins Community Service Award Born in Buffalo New York in 1968, Tom is the son of Kevin and Marguerite (Reilly) McDonnell. He spent his elementary years at St. Martin of Tours School where he was educated in the hallmarks of a Catholic Education: academic excellence, leadership, Christian service, and global awareness and outreach. Tom graduated from Bishop Timon High School where the Franciscans built on the base that Tom already had from his home life and his elementary years. College followed with an undergraduate degree from Buffalo State College and then a master’s degree in Secondary Education from Canisius College. In Tom’s own words, “my time at Canisius provided me the opportunity to engage in truly incredible learning.” Tom married his best friend and true love, Maureen Monahan, in January of 2000. They have been blessed with three beautiful and loving children, Catherine, Luke, and Holly. Each one has their own wonderful personality and talents, making Tom and Maureen’s lives as parents “more rewarding than they could have ever imagined.” Tom has always been surrounded with a loving and supportive family. He has three sisters; Lynn, Jean (Garry Preece) and Meghan (Pete Calamari). His family and countless friends have molded him and supported his every endeavor. In 2009, after years of research, hard work and much help from some great friends, Tom founded Dog Ears Bookstore (and Café in 2012). It is a non-profit bookstore and Literary Arts Center on Abbott Road. Using his affection, and the vehicle of the Bookstore, Tom has enriched the lives of the people of his community. Dog Ears offers these programs, free of charge (depending on grants and funding) at the literary arts center and does off-site programming at The Valley Community Association and the Seneca-Babcock Community Center. In addition, they host book signings by local authors and 4th Friday Poetry Series and build relationships with organizations throughout Western New York. Tom would like to add that the mission of Dog Ears Bookstore & Café and the Literary Arts Center would not come to fruition were it not for the efforts of numerous, awesome volunteers, especially Lynn Carloni. They are truly amazing and giving people who care about our community. Our wonderful café is a tribute to the tireless efforts of Lainie Wesser. We are all here for each other and our community!

Donna Curry

The Tim O’Neil Good Samaritan Award Donna Curry has been a life-long resident of South Buffalo. She is the widow of Kevin P. Curry, a mother of five, a grandmother of fourteen, and a greatgrandmother of two. She received her education at St. John the Evangelist, South Park High School, and ECTI. She is now a retired job coach from WNY Development Center after twenty-five years. Donna’s volunteer experience began with the South Buffalo Beautification Committee and Sister Marie Bernard. She worked on the Fireman’s Monument at the entrance of Caz Park and the South Buffalo Monument at Abbott and Potter. She helped landscape and maintain the long-neglected McKinley and McClellan Circles. Then South Buffalo Alive was born. She helped plant annuals and maintained McKinley and McClellan Circles until Olmsted Parks took over. Donna helped cleanup, plant gardens and install fences at Tim Russert’s Children’s Garden next to Dudley Library. She also helped in in the plants at Morgan Brookdale Park and aided in establishing the first Garden Walk in South Buffalo. Donna was co-chair of the Parade of Circles and on the committee of the South Buffalo Italian Festival and Christmas in the Park. Her good deeds did not end there. At St. Martin of Tours as Eucharistic Minister, she served at funeral masses and brought weekly communion to the homebound and Ridgeview Manor Nursing Home. She was a Garden Angel volunteer where she helped water and maintain gardens around the church, rectory, and school. She is also on the patient advisory board as a Eucharistic Minister at the Mercy Hospital-Spiritual Care department.

Marge Ryan

The Tim O’Neil Good Samaritan Award Born on January 23rd in 1937, right here in South Buffalo New York, Marge Ryan lived on Sage Avenue for twenty two years with her parents, grandparents, and seven siblings. She attended PS 27 and 70 and South Park High School. After graduating in 1954, she immediately entered the field of stenography and worked at the Genesee Building. There she met her husband Tom Ryan and they married on January 4th, 1959. Fifty nine and a half years later, they have raised six children, three boys and three girls, who have graduated from Timon Bishop High School and Mount Mercy Academy. Three children have followed in the footsteps of their father and are working in the field of education. The remaining have become a hairstylist, a homemaker, and a Bureau Chief at CNN. Marge now has seventeen grandchildren – nine boys and eight girls. Her life changed once her grand children grew up. She became somewhat involved in the political area. As a volunteer, she worked very hard but also enjoyed herself. Then came along her organization, South Buffalo Alive. She is now fully committed in helping South Buffalo be the best community it can be. Marge has contributed to the Parade of Circles, the Garden Walk, the beautification of South Buffalo, the Tim Russert Children’s Garden, Brookdale Park, Brick Garden at Caz Park, and many other projects. For her wonderful contributions, she has received awards from Congressman Higgins, Tim Kennedy, S.B. Chamber, Councilman Kearns, and recently Olmsted Park Conservancy. “Thank you for including me in your list of honorees. I am very honored.” – Marge Ryan

Kathy Cunningham

The Tim O’Neil Good Samaritan Award Kathy Cunningham has been a long time member of South Buffalo Alive. Before that, Kathy and her family participated in many of the great American cleanups around South Buffalo. Other projects she has helped with include the Parade of Circles as co-chair, Christmas in the park on the committee, South Buffalo Italian Festival on the committee, and the South Buffalo Farmers’ Market as a board member.

Congratulations to our 2018 Honorees! 5

The Tim O’Neil Good Samaritan Award The Biblical tale of the Good Samaritan is a lesson we should all learn in life. It is a story of selflessness and compassion. The Samaritan put his own well being and safety second to a man who had been beaten, robbed, and left for dead on the road to Damascus. This parallels what Tim O’Neil did for our son Ryan, he put his own safety in jeopardy in an attempt to save Ryan’s life. Tim could have suffered the same fate as Ryan, being struck by a car as he waited for emergency personnel on the side of the road, but that was second to helping someone who was truly in need. As a family, we cannot show enough gratitude for this immense act of selflessness. That is why we are both humbled and honored to present the Good Samaritan award in Tim’s name.
