HISTORY, ENTERTAI NMENT AND ART
Chautauqua County has been the go-to destination for vacation learning for over 140 years, boasting attractions like Chautauqua Institution and the National Comedy Center, the birthplace of national celebrities including Lucille Ball, Roger Tory Peterson, Governor Reuben Fenton and Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, as well as a host of entertainment venues from cruises on the lake to comedy shows featuring up-and-coming and nationally renowned artists. From museums and history centers like the Dunkirk Lighthouse to mountain adventures at Peek’n Peak Resort, and art galleries from Fredonia to
Jamestown, Chautauqua County offers things to do and places to amuse all year long.
One of Chautauqua County’s most distinguished attractions is Chautauqua Institution, a unique and charming Victorian village located along the northwestern shore of Chautauqua Lake. Founded in 1874, the “Chautauqua Experience” continues a 144-year tradition as an extraordinary blend of arts, education, recreation and religion. This summer, engage your mind, body and spirit from June 23 – August 26, 2018. Chautauqua’s nine-week program season begins with a week observing
the power and tradition of the literary arts, which find themselves at the forefront of cultural, political and artistic conversations in the U.S. and around the world. Highlights include conversations about Russia and the West, The Changing Nature of Work, The Arts and Global Understanding featuring The Silk Road Ensemble and Yo-Yo Ma, and much more. Chautauqua’s 2018 season concludes with examining the impact of cinema on storytelling and social change and the Chautauqua Film and Food Festival. At nearby Lily Dale Assembly, the summer program runs from June 29 – September 2, 2018.

Stop in Brocton to see a monument dedicated to cartoonist Brad Anderson and his infamous canine character, Marmaduke. Visit “ONG-GWE-OHN-WEH” in Dunkirk, a decades old sculpture carved by Hungarian artist Peter Wolf Toth to honor Native Americans on his Trail of Whispering Giants. In Jamestown, breath-taking likenesses of Lucy and cohorts act out popular “I Love Lucy” scenes painted on five buildings. Two bronze statues in Celoron’s Lucille Ball Memorial Park also honor the First Lady of Comedy. The original became a nationwide phenomenon in 2015 when locals requested the artist re-work this “Scary Lucy” to more accurately resemble her appearance. A new statue was revealed in 2016 and both are currently on display in the park.

FIVE AMAZING LAKES PLU S WATERWAYS
Windswept shores, sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs define Chautauqua County’s northern Lake Erie border. Just a few miles inland at 1308 feet above sea level, Chautauqua Lake is said to be one of the highest navigable bodies of water in North America. Several smaller lakes surround Chautauqua, including Findley Lake to the southwest, formed from spring fed ponds that drain into the West Branch of French Creek, and Bear and Cassadaga Lakes to the north. Explore the water on vessels of all sizes from canoes, kayaks and fishing boats to pontoons, power boats, and narrated cruises aboard commercial yachts.

FO UR SEASONS I N THE GR EAT OU TDOOR S
Discover magnificent views and undisturbed landscapes while hiking, cycling, mountain biking, birding, horseback riding, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. Chautauqua County boasts an elevation ranging from 500 to 2000 feet above sea level with rolling Allegheny foothills and five lakes including 50 miles along Lake Erie as well as western New York’s largest inland lake, Chautauqua.
Spring and fall are peak seasons for fly fishing in Steelhead Alley, the tributary streams that feed Lake Erie. They are
also seasons for enjoying golf on twenty courses throughout a region known for the quality of its golf season, access to courses, and reasonable fees. In summer, the lakes provide plenty of opportunity for fun on the water. Rent a boat. Relax on a beach. Go fishing, kayaking, or take a lesson in sailing. With more than 200 inches of average annual lake effect snowfall, Chautauqua’s landscape, well-known for summer fun becomes a winter sports
lover’s paradise. Connect with a local snowmobile club to learn about snowmobile safety classes for youth before heading out on more than 400 miles of trails. Skiers and snowboarders will find plenty of expert advice from the instructors at the Peek’n Peak Resort.
Cockaigne Ski Area in Cherry Creek is scheduled to re-open for the 2018-2019 ski season.

DEEP WATER ANGLING, TRIBUTARY STREAMS AND INLAND LAKES Named the #7 Best Bass Lake in the US by Bassmaster Magazine (June 2017), Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes. Bass are found along the entire New York shoreline, with hotspots along rocky drop-offs in 15 to 35 feet of water. Anglers can enjoy an early bass season on Lake Erie, which runs from the 1st Saturday in May until the 3rd Saturday in June. The eastern basin of Lake Erie is also well-known for trophy-size walleye (8-10 lbs) found in deeper waters with local tournament winners often exceeding 11 lbs. Lake Erie's tributary streams, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Canadaway, and 18-Mile Creeks on their mission to spawn. For the sportsman, excellent fly-fishing opportunities await. Go fishing on inland lakes including Chautauqua, Findley, Cassadaga and Bear Lakes. Chautauqua Lake, ranked #21 Best Bass Lake in the Northeast by Bassmaster (June 2017), offers exceptional fishing for walleye, bass, muskellunge and several species of panfish. Findley Lake’s abundant beds of aquatic vegetation provide angling for a variety of sportfish and panfish, while the three interconnected lakes of Cassadaga provide angling for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge and panfish. The smallest of the County’s inland lakes, known as a kettle lake, Bear Lake's shoreline is predominantly wetland, providing excellent habitat for bass and other predator and prey fish.

The eastern wild turkey thrives in forested areas throughout the county which consistently ranks in the top three counties in New York State for the spring turkey harvest. EXPLORE WOODS, FIELDS AND TRAILS Proximity to Lake Erie and lake effect storms mean snow for Chautauqua County, totaling an average of 200 inches annually! For downhill and cross country snow sports, head to Peek’n Peak Resort and enjoy 27 slopes and trails, state-of-the-art snowmaking, eight chairlifts, four progressive terrain parks, and a renowned ski and snowboard school. There’s even a tubing area with seven lanes and a “Magic Carpet” lift. Cross country skiers and snowshoers will also find opportunities at Long Point State Park, Lake Erie State Park, Chautauqua Institution, and the Jamestown Audubon Community Nature Center. Hundreds of miles of trails groomed by five local clubs provide an ideal setting for snowmobiling over old railroad beds, former trolley lines, open farm fields, heavily wooded areas, and seasonal roads. Snowmobile trails may officially open a week or so before Christmas provided the ground is frozen and there is adequate snow.

TOURS AND RACES Explore the rolling hills of Amish Country, low lying Great Lakes Plain, and inland shorelines of Chautauqua County on two wheels. Cycling is fast becoming a popular activity in the region from casual rides to destination tours and races like the Chautauqua Gran Fondo event in August that circles Chautauqua Lake, and the Tour D’Vine and Tour of Chautauqua rides through the Lake Erie region. Take a ride from Findley Lake to Panama Rocks or Silver Creek to Cherry Creek and enjoy country roads and idyllic scenery. Routes that climb the Lake Erie escarpment challenge the hardiest cyclists and offer the most rewarding views. For off-road cycling and mountain biking, try the Rails to Trails system, the Overland Trails including the Harris Hill State Forest, or the new mountain trails at Peek’n Peak Resort. Chautauqua Institution, Lake Erie and Long Point State Parks, and Point Gratiot in Dunkirk offer little traffic and gentle grades for families. For more suggestions, check the Where to Play Cycling section on tourchautauqua.com to find details on cycling routes recommended by area cycling shops, clubs, and race organizers. Each suggestion includes a summary map and description of the route in a printable PDF format.

TASTE GRAPES, F RU IT AND WI NE
Delight your senses with native grapes, wineries, craft breweries and distilleries, farm markets, lighthouses, scenic vistas and historic trails along the Lake Erie shoreline. This is America’s Grape Country, home to the oldest and largest Concord grape growing region in the world and the largest grape growing region in the United States east of the Rockies. Learn the story of more than 150 years of grape growing at the Grape Discovery Center on Route 20 near Westfield. Sample award winning wines in Lake Erie Wine Country. Plan a visit during one of the wine country’s annual events
including a Wine and Chocolate Weekend in February, Wine and Cheese Weekend in April, Charming Wine Weekend in May, and Harvest Wine Celebrations in November. Chautauqua County boasts the largest number of farms of any county in New York State primarily due to many small family dairy or grape farms supplemented by meat from livestock operations, tree fruits and vegetables. Winemaker’s, Farmto-Table, and Beer Pairing Dinners at individual wineries, restaurants, and breweries offer unique opportunities
to not only enjoy sumptuous meals that are sourced from these local farms, but also to learn from the winemakers, brew masters, and chefs how to pair foods and flavors when entertaining and creating your own culinary masterpieces.

Visit family owned farms like Abers Acres in Kennedy and pick-your-own fruit in season. Many farms offer a “u-pick” option for in-season fruits. See the Taste Trail for more suggestions or stop at a farm stand and inquire. Plan a weekly trip to a farmers market during growing season to find fresh meats and cheese, homemade jams, jellies, and fudge in addition to seasonal produce. See the calendar of events on page 18 for a schedule of farmers markets in Chautauqua County where you might also find pure New York State maple syrup made from the sap of local trees and local honey. At the Sugar Shack in Barcelona, sample 21 flavors of farm-made fruit syrups. Stop at Reverie Creamery on Route 394 in Mayville for small batch, award-winning, artisan cheese. For convenience and a taste of the harvest from multiple farms, contact CHQ Local Food and have produce delivered right to your door. Reverie Creamery
Make arrangements with your favorite designated driver or local transportation service (see page 93) because we’ve mapped out the perfect craft beverage road trip. Let our interactive Craft Beverage Map be your guide across the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Region. Visit New York State’s first trifecta, Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing/Mazza Chautauqua Cellars. They are the first to produce wine, craft beer and spirits! Southern Tier Brewing Company is a must-visit and so is their sister distillery, Southern Tier Distilling Company. Other local favorites like Enchanted Mountain Spirits, Ellicottville Brewing Company locations and newcomers to the local craft scene are on the tour. Plan your #drinklocal adventure at CHQmaps.com.

VINEYARDS, BEACHES AND LIGHTHOUSES
Travel along the Lake Erie shoreline in western New York from Silver Creek to the Pennsylvania border and look out over mile upon mile of vineyards. Sharing an area less than six miles wide with three major east/west routes (Routes 5, 20 and Interstate 90), this 50-mile stretch includes beachfront communities, two lighthouses, charming villages, picturesque farms, orchards, produce stands, and 20,000 acres farmed by grape growers. Look out over the Great Lake Erie from the Dunkirk Lighthouse tower, the Sun-
set Bay breakwall, or the Luensman Overview Park at the top of the Chautauqua Ridge and escarpment. All offer spectacular panoramic views of the seemingly endless Lake Erie horizon. Spend the day at a beach or go shopping along the Dunkirk Boardwalk. Plan a trip to the farmers market on Saturday in Fredonia or Westfield, or stop at the Cross Roads Farm and Craft Market. Open year-round, the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield offers shopping,
tastings, and a history lesson of more than 150 years of grape growing in the region. Visit during harvest season to inhale the sweet aroma arising from nearby vineyards. Enjoy a glass of wine or sample juice made with 100% Concord grapes. Taste products made locally like grape jam, Concord grape vinaigrette, grape berry topping, or grape fruit sticks. Purchase Lake Erie Wine Country vintages to share with friends back home. In the Exhibit Room, discover how grapes are grown through each season.

CANDLELIGHT LODGE
Go birdwatching in the landscape that first inspired renowned ornithologist, artist, photographer, author and natural historian, Roger Tory Peterson. Thermal currents and flyways along Lake Erie, heavily forested areas, protected wetlands and open fields provide ideal conditions for migratory birds and nesting pairs. During the spring and late fall, Chadwick Bay and Barcelona Harbor on Lake Erie and portions of Chautauqua Lake and other inland lakes host a variety of species on their brief layover. Over 340 species have been identified in Chautauqua County! Several accessible trails and viewing areas are listed at TourChautautauqua.com/birding.aspx. Plan a stop at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown to view the changing wildlife art and photography exhibits by both Roger and artists from around the world.

Lake Erie Beaches
Take a walk or play on one of many beaches and lakeside parks along Lake Erie. The beach at Sunset Bay off Routes 20 and 5 near Silver Creek is one of western New York’s favorites. The wide, sandy shoreline and shallow water is an ideal spot for families looking for a place to go swimming and sunning, and to play in the sand. Adjacent to the beach, the Sunset Bay Beach Club offers live bands and DJ’s, and Cabana Sam’s Beach Bar & Grill provides an outside deck and inside dining. In Dunkirk, Point Gratiot is a hotspot for cycling and bird watching with tennis, life-guarded swimming, a playground, picnic area and restrooms. High bluffs provide a breathtaking view at Lake Erie State Park which also provides the conveniences of picnic areas, playgrounds and hiking trails. Located along Route 5 in the Town of Westfield, one of the region’s best kept secrets is Barcelona Harbor. The beach is wide with rocks and sand for walking and the water is good for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. There are no lifeguards here, but there are picnic tables, free parking, and a pier, along with restaurants and a boat launch. Stop in the new information center at the Barcelona Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes and the first to be powered by natural gas. Barcelona also offers the perfect westerly vantage for watching the sun drop below the watery horizon.

Go Wine Tasting
Sip, swirl and savor regional wines along Lake Erie and a trail comprised of over 20 wineries between Silver Creek, NY and Harborcreek, PA. Lake Erie Wine Country is unique in that it incorporates wineries from two states in a contiguous grape growing region that boasts over 30,000 acres of vineyards and a landscape sprinkled with Victorian-era villages and family owned shops and restaurants. While Concords and Labrusca grapes dominate the region, the wine selections span the taste palette from dry to sweet and include award winning dessert, ice and specialty wines. The climate is particularly conducive to Germanic varietals and hybrids. Most wineries are open for tastings year round and several offer seasonal experiences like walking tours, carriage, or sleigh rides through the vineyards, winemaker’s dinners, and annual celebrations like the America’s Grape Country Wine Festival, Silver Creek Festival of Grapes, Harvest Wine Weekends and Wine and Chocolate Weekend. Look for events at the Grape Discovery Center or stop by any day to tour the exhibits, learn about the science of growing grapes, and the Lake Erie region’s 150 year grape tradition.

STAY, SHOP, AND DINE
At the heart of Chautauqua County lies western New York’s largest inland lake. At 18 miles long, less than 2 miles wide, and an altitude of 1308 feet, Chautauqua Lake touches several communities from the urban landscapes of Jamestown and Lakewood at its southern end to the summer communities of Bemus Point and Stow at its narrow mid-point, and Mayville and Chautauqua, centers of government and learning at its northern tip. The Native American name “Jaddah’gwah” is said to describe the shape of the lake, resembling a bag
tied in the middle or two moccasins tied together.
Interstate 86 via the Chautauqua Lake Bridge dissects the lake at its narrow mid-point connecting the communities of Stow and Bemus Point and offering easy access to activities, shopping, and dining. For a more leisurely crossing, the historic Bemus Point-Stow Ferry has been transporting pedestrians, cars, cyclists across the narrows for over 200 years. Along the northwestern lakeshore, Chautauqua Institution has been welcoming summer visitors
since its founding as a vacation learning center in 1874. Visit during Chautauqua’s program season for a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship programs, and recreational activities including golf, tennis, and sailing. New in 2018, the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel will open its doors to guests. Located along the southeastern shoreline where Chautauqua Lake and the Chadakoin River meet, the hotel will pay homage to the Celoron Amusement Park, which once drew visitors to the very same property during the late 1800’s to the mid 1900’s.

Wine, Craft Beer & Spirits In an area that has been a long time praised for its grape vineyards and award-winning wineries, craft breweries and distilleries have begun to not only take hold, but grow throughout Chautauqua County. After more than 40 years in the wine making business, the Mazza family opened Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing/Mazza Chautauqua Cellars in Westfield. As New York State’s first combined brewery, winery and distillery, they have a strong commitment to creating small batch craft beverages and partnering with local agricultural producers to ensure ingredients are grown as close to home as possible. New in 2017, Five & 20 began using the byproducts from their brewing operation to resourcefully feed and the fish at their onsite commercial fish production farm, as well as to treat wastewater thereby reducing pollution.
Southern Tier Brewing Company, one of the largest craft brewers in the game, got its start right here in Chautauqua County. Visit their Empty Pint Tasting Room and Pub in Lakewood to sample your favorite STBC brews. Tours are offered every Saturday on a first come, first serve basis. Afterwards hang out in the Schalander Tasting Room overlooking the continuously growing brew house or head back down to The Empty Pint to order house-made comfort foods. Before leaving, journey down the hill to visit their sister distillery, Southern Tier Distilling Company. Ask for a flight or have the bartenders shake up a creative craft cocktail featuring STDC’s award-winning spirits. To view our interactive Craft Beverage Map, visit CHQmaps.com

When summer is in swing, so are the bands! Many waterfront communities host summer concert series. Thursday evenings at Dunkirk’s Pier are a longstanding tradition. This award-winning series features some of the region’s favorite bands. If conditions permit, the evening will conclude with a spectacular Lake Erie sunset that just may take your breath away. The Floating Stage on Chautauqua Lake is a hot spot on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Live bands get the boats rocking and people on shore swaying to the tunes of summertime favorites. Regularly scheduled bands and DJs at various Bemus Point establishments make it a fun destination for a night on the town. Chautauqua Institution’s Amphitheater draws big name performers to its stage. Popular entertainers scheduled for 2018 include the Avett Brothers, Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Straight No Chaser and more. Visit CHQCalendar.com for a list of scheduled performances.

GROWERS
Chautauqua is home to more than 1,500 farms as well as a thriving farm-to-table movement. Plan a visit to the growers of local produce, dairy and meats. Spend an afternoon picking your own USDA certified organic fruits and vegetables at Abers Acres in Kennedy. You’ll find cuts of grass-fed beef, chicken, organic shiitake mushrooms and tart cherry juice at Green Heron Growers Farm Store in Sherman. After gathering the staples, visit the award-winning Reverie Creamery in Mayville to compliment your fresh finds.

FOUR SEASONS OF FUN
In the southwest corner of Chautauqua County, Findley Lake’s proximity to I-86 offers easy access to attractions in Chautauqua County and Lake Erie Wine Country. Visit the picturesque hamlet of Findley Lake on a small lake of the same name with a main street of boutique shops. A short drive down the road takes you to Peek’n Peak Resort, a four season destination for golf, snow sports, aerial adventures, mountain biking and getaways at an old English Tudor style Inn.
Peek’n Peak’s Upper Golf Course is home to the LECOM Health Challenge, one of twenty-five PGA tournaments
on the Web.com Tour. The 2018 event takes place July 2-8th.
The farmlands in the rolling countryside surrounding the Findley Lake are home to some of our local Amish community. If you travel the country roads toward the eastern edge of Chautauqua County and into neighboring Cattaraugus County, you’ll discover one of the largest Old Order Amish communities in the country and New York’s Amish Trail. Farming is the main occupation here with work done using all metal wheeled equipment and horses. To supplement their income, some Amish have turned to making
quilts, wrought iron, furniture, leather and collar goods, windows, steel roofing, and cutting lumber.
Amish merchants offer their quality goods from a room in their home or an extra building on the farm. Maps of the three predominant Amish areas within Chautauqua County are available at Chautauqua Institution’s Main Gate, the I-86 Chautauqua Lake Visitors Centers or online. Plan to visit before sundown and on any day but Sunday. Please note that photographs and video are forbidden by the Amish.

Getaway PLAN A GIRLFRIEND
A Weekend with your girlfriends is good for the soul; something about reconnecting puts everything back into focus. Time spent on planning can sometimes be the biggest obstacle, so let us help: 1. Shop - Locally owned stores will make you feel as if you unearthed a secret gem. Discover curated boutiques, handmade jewelry, artisanal food, Amish goods and memorabilia unique to the area. Organize a white elephant gift swap to surprise one another with a gift at the end of your trip!
2. Savor – Embark on a tasting journey. Sample wine, craft beer and locally distilled spirits. Go on a farm tour and pick your own organic produce. Attend a farm-to-table dinner or enjoy smoked Great Lakes whitefish.
3. Experience – Sign up for a SUP yoga class or make reservations for Peek’n Peak Resort’s Mountain Adventure Course. Race down the mountain’s Giant Dual Zipline and experience the thrilling Aerial Adventure Course, a tree top journey featuring over 60 obstacles. Depending on the time of year, explore area hiking trails, rent a boat or hit the slopes. 4. Indulge – Treat yourselves to some spa time, a visit to Webb’s Candies for homemade chocolates, or some r&r at your hotel, vacation home or bed and breakfast.
