PLANETARIUM Farewell Opportunity: A Mars Exploration Rover Tribute (Grade 3-Adult)
One of the most successful and enduring feats of interplanetary exploration, NASA’s Opportunity rover mission ended after almost 15 years exploring the surface of Mars and helping lay the groundwork for NASA’s return to the Red Planet. Opportunity stopped communicating with Earth when a severe Mars-wide dust storm blanketed its location in June 2018. The solar-powered rover’s final communication was received June 10. Join us at the planetarium for a farewell tribute to Opportunity and the amazing discoveries it uncovered exploring Mars. In addition, come see our recently updated digital planetarium software, Nightshade Pro, for a truly amazing tour of the stars, planets and constellations for spring 2019. NASA’s Great Observatories (Grade 3-Adult)
To grasp the wonders of the universe, and understand its infinite variety and splendor, we must collect and analyze radiation emitted by phenomena throughout the entire electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. Towards that end, NASA proposed the concept of Great Observatories, a series of four space-borne observatories designed to conduct astronomical studies over many different wavelengths (visible, gamma rays, X-rays and infrared). An important aspect of the Great Observatory program was to overlap the operations phases of the missions to enable astronomers to make contemporaneous observations of an object at different spectral wavelengths. Join as at the planetarium as we remember these great observatories and take a peaceful tour of the stars, planets and constellations of the spring season. (PLA-015) Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 4/9

Golden Anniversary of Apollo 11 (Grade 3-Adult)
The world eagerly watched on July 20, 1069, as Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” E Aldrin, Jr. took mankind’s first steps on the Moon. This unprecedented engineering, scientific, and political achievement was the culmination of the efforts of an estimated 400,000 Americans and secured our Nation’s leadership in space for generations to come. The Apollo 11 crew Armstrong, Aldrin and Michael Collins, - safely returned to Earth on July 24, 1969, fulfilling the national goal set in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. Nearly half a century later, the United States is the only country ever to have attempted and succeeded in landing humans on a celestial body other than Earth and safely returning them home. Join us at the planetarium for a look at this historic achievement and take our final tour of the night sky with the Nightshade Pro software.
