Fans expressed regret over the announcement that Dutch Garden Restaurant, 4203 State St., would serve its final meals Saturday.

fter 75 years of serving delicious German fare to Santa Barbara and Goleta locals, the beloved Dutch Garden restaurant at 4203 State St. will serve its last meal this Saturday before closing its doors for good. Open since 1945, Dutch Garden has remained a local favorite by serving up delicious dishes including schnitzel; German sausages like weisswurst, bratwurst and knockwurst; sauerkraut; and a variety of sandwiches. the Native Daughters. Ms. Nowak admitted that part of her momentarily considered being Saint Barbara for next year’s Fiesta rather than this year’s, as COVID-19 restrictions have forced Old Spanish Days to re-imagine this year’s event to accommodate social distancing. Ultimately though, she decided now was the right time to serve the community. “This is the time for me. This is the time that our community needs healing, and this is the time that I should be Saint Barbara,” she said. Scott Boniface, who donates regularly, gives blood at the Lobero Theatre.

Saving lives in the spotlight Lobero Theatre hosts blood drive By GRAYCE MCCORMICK NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT

Teresa Kuskey Nowak, top center, poses with some of her family at the Rose Garden near the Santa Barbara Mission Thursday afternoon.

The Lobero Theatre held a new type of performance Thursday — not for entertainment, but for saving lives. Vitalant, one of the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit transfusion medicine organizations, held a COVID19 compliant blood drive on the Lobero’s stage. Because of the theater’s large size, Vitalant staff was able to maintain social distancing, sanitize all areas touched by donors and create a one way in, one way out path for donors,

starting in the courtyard and ending on the stage. Masks were required for all parties involved, and temperatures of staff and donors were monitored. Blood donation has been dramatically impacted by the global pandemic for numerous reasons, the biggest being where organizations can hold blood drives. “Mobile blood drives make up the majority of our production sales,” said Diane Frantela, the donor recruitment representative for Vitalant. “As soon as the stayPlease see blood on A2

spot.” “Terrible! I LOVED that place! Yet another heartbreak in SB,” commented Billy Gill. “Heartbroken. Next to La Tolteca, the worst delicious cultural loss I can remember,” said David Palladino. Many commented that they will try to visit for the first time before the restaurant closes, while other longtime customers said they would stop by for a meal and a drink one last time. One commenter mentioned that the restaurant has been busier than ever following the news. Dutch Garden is far from the only Santa Barbara-area staple to close its doors permanently

Sonos lays off 12% of workforce anta Barbara-based speaker maker Sonos is laying off employees around the world after economic damage linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. In an SEC filing, Sonos, headquartered at 614 Chapala St., said it began reducing its global headcount by 12% on Tuesday. In addition to the layoffs, Sonos is closing its New York retail store and six satellite offices.

By JOSH GREGA eresa Kuskey Nowak was announced as the next Saint Barbara for Old Spanish Days Fiesta during an event on Thursday afternoon at the A.C. Postel Rose Garden near the Santa Barbara Mission. After some introductory remarks from Old Spanish Days board member and 2007 Saint Barbara Thea Palencia, Ms. Nowak emerged from behind the rose bushes wearing a white dress, scarlet cape, gold crown, and holding a golden palm frond and chalice in her hands. Ms. Nowak told the NewsPress that she was “honored” and “surprised” to be chosen as this year’s Saint Barbara, and that portraying the patron saint has been a long time ambition of hers. “It’s something I grew up wanting to be. She portrays a very strong woman and in our community right now we need the strength,” she said. Saint Barbara was a virgin martyr of the third and fourth centuries when Christians were persecuted by the Roman Empire. Her pagan father kept her imprisoned in a tower to preserve her honor, but he beheaded her after she confessed to being a Christian. As her father made his way home after killing her, he was struck by lightning and died. Ms. Palencia stated that this made Saint Barbara the patron saint of firefighters, architects, stonemasons, sailors, soldiers handling explosives, and protection against lightning. For five years, Ms. Nowak has been a member of Reina del Mar Parlor No. 126, the local Native Daughters of the Golden West chapter that annually chooses a woman to portray Saint Barbara during Fiesta activities. According to the Old Spanish Days website, Saint Barbara makes appearances at Fiesta events like La Fiesta Pequeña, Noches de Ronda, and the annual parade, during which she rides on a float sponsored by

lagers, pilsners and ales from Germany and Belgium. Although many businesses have been forced to close up shop due to the financial strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, commenters on Facebook and a Santa Barbara area blogger, The Restaurant Guy, have reported that the owners were planning to retire next year anyway. It seems that the pandemic brought their decades’ long journey to an end earlier than intended. The more than 150 commenters on the Dutch Garden’s Facebook page are saddened by the news, and they shared memories and comments about their favorite qualities about their favorite “hidden gem” and “secret local

Reminders issued about libraries’ Sidewalk Service By BRIAN MACKLEY NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT

T

he city of Goleta announced on Monday that the first week of Sidewalk Service at the Goleta Valley, Buellton and Solvang libraries “was a huge success.” The new Sidewalk Service is open in front of each library location Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The three locations are part of the same library system. Although a news release said “it was great to see so many of our patrons dropping off and picking up books at all three of our branches,” the city wanted to issue some important reminders about the new Sidewalk Service. The first reminder was to reiterate that now is the time to return any books or DVDs that were checked out pre-COVID-19. Library customers can do this by placing their books/ DVD’s in book drops. The release states that “If you notice that items you returned to the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley libraries are still on your record, don’t be concerned. For everyone’s safety, we are quarantining all returns for four days before checking them in. It can take up to one week before returned items are removed from your account.” To request books and other items, the library says to “log on to your account with Black Gold and select your home library branch to see which items are available from any of the three branches, Goleta Valley, Buellton or Solvang Library.” Black Gold is at www.blackgold.org. According to the news release, the Black Gold service, which ships books to various local libraries, will not resume until later this year. For a tutorial on how to place a hold, visit www. goletavalleylibrary.org. The library said that

once logged into Black Gold, it is important for customers to select their own home library because books not owned by Goleta Valley, Buellton or Solvang libraries are not available for check-out. Once a customer’s items are ready, they will receive a notice by email, text or automated voice message. Customers will then have three options to let the library staff know they have arrived to pick up their items. At the Goleta Valley Library, customers can text CHECKIN to 805-902-1020, go to https:// widget.uniquelibrary.com/configs/GL/gv.html or call 805-964-7878. The library also wanted to remind people who have signed up for the Craft Kit for Kids program that their kits are ready and waiting for them. The release states, “Now that Sidewalk Service is available, the Children’s Craft Kits will no longer be mailed. The free kits are only available for patrons of the Goleta, Buellton and Solvang libraries. Each month children can receive two craft kits. Once you request a kit online, two will automatically be prepared for you each month, for each child registered. The kits for June are now available and future kits will be available after the fifth of each month.” Lastly, the library wanted to remind people that in order to receive service, all visitors must comply with social distancing rules. According to the release, “After you have notified the library you have arrived, a library staff member will make sure everything is ready for you, and then send you to the front door of the library to pick-up your items. Library staff will be following public health safety guidelines as well, wearing face coverings and gloves, and an apron if they are emptying the book drops. Please be respectful of other patrons and do not come if you are feeling ill.” For more information, library staff will be available via phone during Sidewalk Service hours (Tuesday – Saturday, 11:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.) to answer any questions. Solvang council member: ‘I will not resign’ By GRAYCE MCCORMICK NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT

A

fter failing an effort to recall City Council member Chris Djernaes, a group of Solvang residents resubmitted the petition Thursday morning. The petition accuses Mr. Djernaes of contempt of the Brown Act; violation of ethics; disrespect of constituents, speakers, voters, and current and former City Council members; defamation of

organizations and individuals; and harassment of employees of the city of Solvang. The residents also allege his plan to implement large scale development will be detrimental. “If Djernaes remains in office until the completion of his term in 2022, the inevitable result will be a diminished quality of life and increased taxes for the residents of Solvang,” read the notice of intention to circulate a recall petition. The initial petition failed as a result of an insufficient amount

of signatures, according to acting city manager Xenia Bradford. The petition needed a quarter of its total number of registered voters to sign. Mr. Djernaes rejected what he referred to as “specious accusations” against him, saying, “Not one of those allegations have been proven.” “If they were legitimate complaints, the council or city attorney would have already acted on them,” he told the News-Press Thursday. He said members of the City

Council and residents have been against him since before he was elected, and he ran intending to “put a stop to corruption and clean them out.” The council member said he has been criticized for his campaign slogan of “Doing More with Less,” and turning Solvang into what he calls “Solvang 2.0,” which would mean doubling tax revenues and focusing mostly on tourism. “I will not resign,” Mr. Djernaes said. Dr. Sam Dozer chosen as finalist for American Humane Hero Veterinarian By MARILYN MCMAHON NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

fter reviewing more than 250 nominations from animal lovers across the United States, a panel of veterinary professionals and animal care experts has selected 10 of the country’s top veterinarians and veterinary nurses as finalists for the seventh annual American Humane Hero Veterinarian and Hero Veterinary Nurse Awards, sponsored

by American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization. Dr. Sam Dozer, a local veterinarian, is among them. He has been caring for animals including marine life for 31 years. Pet owners, animal lovers and anyone else can visit www. herovetawards.org every day between now and Aug. 13 at noon Pacific time to vote for the winners who will be honored at the 10th annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards, which will air nationwide as a two-hour

special on the Hallmark Channel this fall. Dr. Dover, 59, was nominated primarily for his work as founder and chief veterinarian of the Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI, “simwee”), a nonprofit dedicated to impacting conservation through marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation, research and education to promote ocean and human health. “Our core work is the rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured, malnourished, orphaned,

entangled and oiled marine mammals,” he said. “CIMWI is a part of the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program, and it is the only organization in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties authorized by NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service to respond to live and dead pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), live and dead sea turtles and live cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) as well as rehabilitate live pinnipeds and triage live cetaceans and sea turtles.”

CIMWI, which has been serving Ventura County since 2006 and Santa Barbara County since 2015, is located at the historic Vista Del Mar Union School campus on the Gaviota coast. The Hollister family deeded the property over to the nonprofit in May 2011. “From 2013 to 2017, CIMWI experienced unprecedented reports of marine mammals in distress and rescued record numbers of pinnipeds. Most of these were malnourished, dehydrated, immunecompromised and emaciated

California sea lion pups. These animals needed our immediate intervention and veterinary medical care to survive,” said Dr. Dover during a phone interview. “We also freed a humpback whale entangled in lines from a prawn trap set off Santa Cruz Island in April. We’ve already returned 19 pinnipeds back to the wild this year, and we will do all we can to provide quality medical and rehabilitation care so we can give these sentinel species a Please see seal on A5

Ensemble Theatre Company modifies 2020-2021 season Ensemble Theatre Company is moving its originally planned 2020-2021 season to the following year and will instead put on a modified four-play season in the interim. According to a news release, the season will include productions of “American Sonâ€? and “Tenderlyâ€? during spring 2021. Both productions were originally scheduled for this past spring, and their dates will be announced in the coming months. Mistress seeking solace still mourns after man’s death

New plea hearing date in child abuse case Flutes Across The World Founder John Zeretzke expected to plead guilty By PAUL GONZALEZ NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

A

federal judge has set a newA plea hearing date for a former traveling music teacher accused of state and federal child abuse charges. On Feb. 5, John Zeretzke, of Ventura, agreed to plead guilty to one federal charge of production of child pornography and six state charges of lewd acts with a minor under 14. The terms of the agreement with the United States Attorney’s Office require Mr. Zeretzke to register as a sex offender. He faces a minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum of 30 years in prison with lifetime supervised release. U.S. Attorney Justin Rhoades said Mr. Zeretzke has not yet appeared in court to change his plea. He can still withdraw his plea, but if he does prosecutors can pursue charges that were dismissed or not filed. Judge Fernando Olguin scheduled Mr. Zeretzke to appear in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles in March to change his plea. On March 18, both sides agreed to continue the hearing to June

FIESTA

Continued from Page A1 a press release. Accolades she has received include an Apogee award for her education work through dance and a finalist award for Spirit of Entrepreneurship from Women’s Economic Ventures. This year’s Fiesta theme “Vamos a Bailar translates in English to “Let’s Dance! and Ms. Nowak suggested that a year with this theme is the right year for her. “The theme of Fiesta is ‘Vamos a Bailar,’ ‘Let’s Dance,’ and I am a dancer, she said. On top of her career as a dancer, Ms. Nowak is chairman of the Veterans Welfare Committee, through which she represents her chapter of the Native Daughters during patriotic commemorations

16 because of the coronavirus pandemic. “Given the grave public-health concerns discussed‌ and given the facts set forth in the parties’ stipulation (which the Court incorporates here), the ends of justice served by the continuance outweigh the best interest of the public and defendant in a speedy trial,â€? Judge Olguin wrote. On May 5, Judge Olguin pushed Mr. Zeretzke’s hearing date back to Oct. 20. In the federal case, Mr. Zeretzke admitted that between December 2016 and February 2017 he pursued a “romantic relationship,â€? with a girl in the Philippines over email. According to the charging documents, Mr. Zeretzke convinced the girl to engage in sexually explicit conduct “for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of such conductâ€? and transmitted that content through a “means and facilityâ€? of interstate and foreign commerce. In the plea, Mr. Zeretzke admitted that he sent money to the girl through one of her relatives in the Philippines and asked her to send him photographs of her genitalia. On Feb. 8, 2017, Mr. Zeretzke took part in a video chat with the girl. During the call Mr. Zeretzke “persuaded and coercedâ€? the

victim to display close-up images of her genitalia. “Defendant, using his computer, created still images of this content, which he knowingly and intentionally saved to his digital devices, the plea agreement read. The victim was under 16 at the time of the call. According to court records, Mr. Zeretzke is also waiting for a hearing to enter his state court plea. He is scheduled to appear for a pre-trial conference on July 8 in Orange County Superior Court. According to a statement released by the state Attorney General’s Office, the alleged abuse in the state case occurred between Jan. 1, 2017 and April 30, 2017. According to a report from the Orange County Register, a grand jury transcript revealed Mr. Zeretzke allegedly recorded himself ejaculating into flutes that he gave to five elementary school students in Costa Mesa and Castaic. In 2009, Mr. Zeretzke founded Flutes Across The World, a charitable organization that taught students to make flutes out of PVC pipes. In 2016, he took the program to the Circle V Ranch camp, but none of the charges involved children from Santa Barbara. email: pgonzalez@newspress.com

In the release, Ms. Nowak said her service to the Santa Barbara community is largely inspired by her late father, Dr. Garvan Kuskey, a local dentist and U.S. Army captain who was heavily involved in preservation activities with El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park. Dr. Kuskey was a president of the Santa Barbara Trust For Historic Preservation, which operates the park, and also served on its board. “I grew up watching a man who continually gave to his community, often anonymously, she said of her father. She added, “It is a complete honor to represent Santa Barbara. I know he would have been beaming with pride. And I do feel he will be on this journey with me.

current situation. They might also inspire future projects. LIBRA — Someone close to you might seem more preoccupied than usual, Libra, and perhaps a bit difficult to deal with. Don’t take this personally. It has little if anything to do with you. He or she doesn’t want to share their troubles. You might be feeling a bit tense and jumpy, but this is nothing to worry about. Take a brisk walk or work out. This should bring some relief. SCORPIO — Today you might be feeling a bit tense, Scorpio, and you probably won’t understand why. The secret? It’s the planets. You might tend to jump at unexpected noises or take offense where none is intended. Relations with others could be a little strained, necessitating some communication about how you’re feeling. Try to work off the tension by taking a brisk walk or perhaps working out at the gym. SAGITTARIUS — You probably aren’t going to feel much like socializing today, Sagittarius, though friends might contact you. Your patience has worn a bit thin and you could get annoyed at incidents that normally wouldn’t bother you. Therefore, this isn’t a good day for group communication. It might be best to have a good workout and then rest. You’ll probably feel much better after you’re done. CAPRICORN — Uptight is the word for today, Capricorn. At some point you might find yourself the center of attention. While you normally might not mind, now it could make you a bit nervous. When you find everyone looking at you and expecting you to say something, say it, keep it short, and then withdraw. You aren’t in the mood. Visit your favorite online sites and read about subjects that interest you to relieve the stress. AQUARIUS — You’re likely to want to be left alone with your own thoughts today. Relaxing with a good book might be at the top of your agenda, Aquarius, and you aren’t liable to want to be interrupted. Noise and requests that don’t usually bother you might tick you off, so it’s best to try to spend some time alone. Also try to be your usual considerate self. To release tension, take a walk. PISCES — Worries over money could have you edgier than usual, Pisces. While you may be doing well, you still could be insecure and think your funds might not stretch far enough. Try to consider the situation objectively. You’ll probably be relieved by what you find. Others’ demands on your time might irritate you more than usual. The best way to escape this kind of tension is to go for a workout or walk.

HOROSCOPE ARIES — You probably crave solitude, Aries. Even though you may have committed to doing something for a friend or relative, now you find the idea irritating. You could have some tasks of your own that you’d rather work on, or you might simply want to go for a workout and burn off some tension. The latter idea is a good one. Perhaps if you exercise early, you’ll feel more like fulfilling your obligations. TAURUS — Although you’re normally a sociable person who feels most comfortable in the company of others, Taurus, today you might rather be alone. You could feel a little under the weather or be stressed from job-related worries. You probably need some rest, but you also could benefit from taking a brisk walk. That will work off some tension, get the endorphins going, and have you feeling yourself again. GEMINI — You tend to enjoy solitude, Gemini, and today you might feel more reclusive than usual. You could be invited to spend time with friends but not feel like accepting. You might even feel a little irritated by them. This is a great day to go for a workout or throw yourself into projects of your own. Physical activity will get rid of stress and help your concentration. Go to it. CANCER — Today there might be tension in the air with no discernible cause, Cancer. Family members could seem preoccupied with problems they can’t quite define. Your natural inclination might be to try to cheer them up, but it probably won’t work. Don’t be too annoyed if they don’t respond to your efforts. It isn’t them. It’s the planets. This is a great day to jog, do aerobics, or otherwise work off tension. LEO — You could get some mysterious phone calls today, Leo, like wrong numbers or hang-ups. Other people might seem less communicative than usual, Leo, and you’re likely to be preoccupied with your own thoughts. You might feel a bit more nervous than usual, but that should go away if you take a brisk walk or get some other exercise. If you’ve been thinking about doing some writing, this is the day to start. VIRGO — Confusion over money matters might come up for you today, Virgo. You may need to check your records in order to shed light on some past transactions. Don’t panic. All should be well. You just need to ascertain the facts. You might have some rather intense dreams tonight. Write them down. You’ll want to remember them later, as they could reveal a lot about your

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

DAILY BRIDGE

15

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your ďŹ rst move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your ďŹ rst move should be to ďŹ nd all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

Gaucho walk-ons plan to hit the ground running this summer By MARK PATTON

T

NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

hree recruited walk-ons are looking to gain some traction at UCSB when the Gaucho basketball team gathers for summer workouts next month. Westlake’s 6-foot-2 Kyle MacLean, Arroyo Grande’s 6-3 Gage Gomez, and 6-9 Niko Rocak of New Hampshire’s Phillips Exeter Academy all have high-hoop dreams even if they don’t have scholarships. “They’re really good kids and really good players, too,” UCSB coach Joe Pasternack said. “I think they’ll add a lot to our practices on a daily basis.” The Gauchos will be a tough lineup to crack with a veteran roster that includes four seniors, a graduate transfer, and three juniors. But all three walk-ons are banking on bright futures after turning down other opportunities. MacLean was tutored by an NBA father. Don MacLean set the Pac-12’s all-time scoring record while at UCLA and played nine seasons in the NBA. He developed many top prospects in the Conejo Valley Basketball Club. Ex-Gaucho Branduinn Fullove was one of his first pupils. Kyle is eight inches shorter than his 6-foot-10 father but his jump shot is as long as they come. He set school records at Westlake this year with 110 3-pointers and 660 points, averaging 22.0 points per game. He led the Warriors, 26-5, to their first Marmonte League title since 2014. He was named league MVP and made CalHi’s All-State Division III Second Team. He also made Westlake’s honor roll with a grade-point average of 4.45. MacLean’s recruitment, however, was hampered by a broken wrist that wiped out nearly all of his junior season and by the COVID-19 pandemic which denied him campus visits this spring. UCSB’s academic offerings and location made it his most appealing option. “He had some opportunities to play at lower levels, which he strongly considered for a long time,” Don MacLean said. “I think as it went along, he understood how hard he worked in the classroom to get accepted to a place like UC Santa Barbara, and I think that’s what he ultimately went with.

UCSB-bound Kyle MacLean, the son of former UCLA and NBA basketball star Don MacLean, set the all-time scoring record at Westlake High School this season.

“If basketball remains a part of his college career for four years, great… But if it doesn’t, I think he’s in the right place. And I think that’s kind of how he came to his decision.” Kyle, who was pursued by such smaller schools as Cal Lutheran and Occidental, is giving Division I basketball his best shot with workouts to expand his game beyond shooting. UC Irvine, UC Davis and San Diego State also asked him to walk on. “I’m doing quickness drills on the court and stuff like that,” MacLean said. “But I’d say the main part of that is building up my stamina. “I’ve been doing cardio every single day and I feel I can get my conditioning up. That way I won’t get as tired on the defensive end.” Gomez has also devoted his offseason to becoming a better athlete. He proved his shooting ability this season by averaging 21 points to lead Arroyo Grande to a CIF-State Division III championship game that wound up getting cancelled by the coronavirus. He’s now trying to use the subsequent

lockdowns to his advantage. “Most people might not be training now,” said Gomez, who made CalHi’s All-State Division III First Team. “Right now is when I can make my strides and take advantage of every moment I can of working out, getting bigger, faster, stronger, and working on my game. “You can put your head in the sand or you can face adversity and make the most of it. We can’t go play pickup, can’t get into the gym, but all you really need is a hoop, a basketball and some concrete ... Just trust the work and everything will fall into place.” His decision to pursue a Division I career without a scholarship was girded by a quote from his club coach, 3Ball’s Mike Wozniak: “The road to success is always under construction.” “I know Woz preaches that all the time but it really resonates with me,” Gomez said. “There were a lot of ups and a lot of downs. It helped me develop a mentality of refusing to let people tell me what I can’t do.” Rocak, like MacLean, received offers from mostly lower-division schools after his junior season was curtailed by an injury. And like the other two Gaucho walk-ons, his focus this offseason has been on getting into better shape. “I feel like I’m very versatile,” said Rocak, a native of Switzerland. “I can play inside, I can play outside. I feel like I’ve still got to improve both areas but my major weakness was conditioning.” He honed his game with the Middlesex Magic, a club program which has 60 alumni now in college basketball and two others — Miami’s Duncan Robinson and Milwaukee’s Pat Connaughton — who graduated into the NBA. New England Recruiting Report gave him a rave review during last season’s Scholar Roundball Classic in Wellesley, Mass.: “He’s moving well, stretching the floor consistently, and showing off the full scope of his skill-set within Exeter’s offense.” He got another thumbs up from J.D. Slajchert, who also played for Phillips Exeter Academy before coming to UCSB: “The pipeline is real,” Slajchert said. “Welcome to the family.” email: mpatton@newspress.com

Continued from Page A1 Patrick Spence revealed that Sonos experienced a 17% yearover-year decline in revenue in the second quarter of 2020. “Coming off a strong first quarter, we had expected some softness in the second quarter, and we did see challenges primarily from a large retail partner in the U.S. rebalancing inventory as well as some weakness in our German market from inventory rebalancing at our distributor,” said Mr. Spence. In March, the company saw a total revenue decline of 23% year-over-year. Mr. Spence said this was due to the “typical replenishment order cycle” in the majority of Sonos’s end markets being disrupted by the COVID19 pandemic as there has been a decline in global demand and broad physical retail closures. Since that time, Sonos has reviewed planned investments, reduced marketing investments, managed and tightened inventory, and eliminated certain discretionary operating expenses, according to the filing. “We are focused on having a lower operating expense run rate in the second half of fiscal 2020 as compared to the first half of fiscal 2020. We are confident that these are the right measures to take at this time, but will continue to review our investments as we learn more over the coming weeks and months,” said Mr. Spence. With the closure of retail stores, Sonos has focused on direct-to-consumer sales through channels like Sonos.com. In March, the company saw a 32% year-over-year increase in revenue through those channels, according to Mr. Spence. “Our direct-to-consumer channel revenue has accelerated meaningfully to approximately 400% year-over-year growth in

April following the success of our ‘At Home with Sonos’ marketing campaign, which ran from April 2 through May 5,” Mr. Spence said. “With millions of people working from home, we realized that we had an opportunity to make their lives a little more joyful during this time and get in front of consumers with relevant promotions and messaging,” Despite Sonos’s success in direct-to-consumer markets, uncertainty and challenges remain as the company is still unsure of when physical retail will reopen or how the global economy will recover. In addition to the layoffs and closures, the company’s board of directors approved a 20% reduction in Mr. Spence’s base salary from July 1 to Dec. 31 and for other executive officers of the company from July 1 through Sept. 30. All members of the board of directors also agreed to forgo their annual cash retainer from the beginning of July to the end of December. In its filing, Sonos estimated $25 to $30 million in restructuring and related impairment charges, including approximately $9 million to $11 million in employee severance and benefit costs and approximately $16 million to $19 million related to site closures and other charges. Nine million dollars to $11 million of the costs are expected to result in future cash expenditures. Sonos said that the layoffs and closures are “are not reflective of any material changes in the company’s business since it reported second quarter fiscal 2020 results.” Sonos will provide further details on its business and the cost savings resulting from these initiatives when it reports third quarter fiscal 2020 results. email: cwhittle@newspress.com
