Jogging for justice Santa Barbara teen organizes 5K to promote social justice
By MITCHELL WHITE NEWS-PRESS ASSOCIATE EDITOR
Kaitlyn Tang admits she isn’t much of a runner, but that’s not stopping her from trying to make a difference. The 16-year-old upcoming junior at Providence School is following her heart as she spearheads the Run for CommUNITY 5k, a virtual race scheduled for Saturday. The virtual event allows people from across the city, county and even the country to participate in their own neighborhoods in order to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The idea really came about because I just wanted to encourage the community,” Kaitlyn told the News-Press. “In the news, it’s all negative when you scroll through the news feed or look on the news. “I just really wanted to do something to bring a positive impact on our community – our great community here in Santa Barbara.” Kaitlyn launched a GoFundMe campaign a few weeks ago in an effort to bring more social awareness to the recent racial injustices that have occurred. The campaign exceeded its $1,000 goal earlier this week. All proceeds from the event will go to Santa Barbara Young Black Professionals, the first and only young professionals group in the area that is catered towards fostering the African American community and creating opportunities for young professionals. Kaitlyn, whose parents lead Waypoint Church in Santa Barbara, met the group’s founder, Quienna Broadnax, while attending church. The two have since become close friends. “This is really an amazing organization,” Kaitlyn said of SBYBP. “They do a lot of mixers, events, opportunities, different social awareness things.” Kaitlyn’s mother, Rebekah, explained that Waypoint, which was formerly the SB Church of Christ, is very diverse in that it supports all races, and social and economic backgrounds. “She’s used to people of all

Both houses of Congress have approved a defense bill that includes support for the space program at Vandenberg Air Force Base. The National Defense Authorization Act features $5 million in funding for Space Force launch range services at several sites, including Vandenberg. The bill also includes funding for military-university partnerships with UCSB and Cal Poly and protection for land in the Los Padres National Forest and the Carrizo Plain in San Luis Obispo County. Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Santa Barbara, secured the local priorities for the defense bill, which passed the House on Tuesday and the Senate on Thursday.
The bipartisan measure provides $741 billion in defense and security funding. It passed the Senate with a decisive 86-14 vote. The bill passed in February in the House of Representatives. The House and Senate must now go to conference and reconcile their versions of the measure. “I’m pleased to see our Central Coast values are strongly represented in this year’s NDAA. I fought to include protections for our public lands, bring offshore wind energy opportunities to Morro Bay and enhance our military-university partnerships,” Rep. Carbajal said in a statement. “Every year that I have sat on the Armed Services Committee, we have been able to cross the aisle and find a bipartisan consensus on these impactful Please see bill on A7

The nonprofit Coalition for Historical Integrity has sued the city of Ventura over the Ventura City Council’s decision to remove the statue of Father Junipero Serra from the front of Ventura City Hall. The statue was removed during early Thursday and is to be moved to Mission San Buenaventura. In a memorandum of points filed with the Ventura Superior Court by the Coalition for Historic Integrity’s attorney Jim McDermott, the plaintiff accuses the city of Ventura of “manufacturing a post hoc rationale” for its decision to remove the statue. It alleges that after individuals started agitating for the statue’s destruction in June, the city quickly decided to remove it and got around California Environmental Quality Act guidelines that would have prevented its removal by the city’s Historic Preservation Committee, concluding the statue didn’t qualify as a historic

mandate their employees to wear a face covering at the job site. Masks with one-way valves are not permitted, as they allow respiratory droplets to easily escape which places others at risk. The order does not apply to persons under 2 years old. email: news@newspress.comÂ

Chris Goldblatt, the founder of the Fish Reef Project, is trying to restore the kelp forest on the seafloor of Goleta Bay. The 1982 El Niño storms caused a huge loss of kelp forests, and he said it’s vital to restore them for the health of the ocean.
Restoring the reefs Fish Reef Project aims to help ocean life thrive By GRAYCE MCCORMICK NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT

hris Goldblatt has been on a mission ever since he was 9 years old and working on the Malibu fishing boats. Diving into Santa Monica Bay hundreds of times gave him what he called “a bond and open mindedness toward nature at a young age.” Ever since, he’s been determined to give back, and he presented his cause July 16 on a webinar put on by the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. The ocean lover founded the Fish Reef Project, with the mission to turn empty seafloor into thriving marine ecosystems again by implementing manufactured fish reefs. His goal for California is what he calls a “simple solution” — a two-acre pilot reef in the middle of Goleta Bay made from natural rock. “The kelp beds off Santa Barbara are for the most part gone,” Mr. Goldblatt told the News-Press. “El Niño scoured the bottom, and there’s no recharging of the system. You just don’t have any material for the kelp to attach to.” The project isn’t just focused in Goleta Bay. Mr. Goldblatt has reef projects in Papua New Guinea, Jamaica, Africa and Hawaii too. About half the project is selffunded and the other half is donations. He said he’s been working 40 hours a week for 10 years with no salary. “It’s something that I’m committed to spending the rest of my life doing and then handing off to the next generation,” Mr. Goldblatt said. “In the next hundred years, there’s going to be an incredibly compacted use of ocean space, and the only way to make sure overfishing doesn’t
This map shows the kelp bed that once stretched from El Capitan to Santa Barbara.
occur is to increase the net productivity of the main area.” With these manufactured fish reefs, Mr. Goldblatt said hardpacked mud on the seafloor will become breeding and feeding grounds to “millions of marine mammals, sea birds, turtles, fish, lobster, abalone, scallop, marine algae and more.” He added that pressure on natural reefs will be reduced. Mr. Goldblatt said this reef production will even provide a backstop food source for the next time there’s a pandemic. “Because we live in Santa
Barbara, if we’re able to restore those kelp forests, it’s a backstop food source we can turn to if we have to,” he said. The 1982 El Niño storms caused a loss of kelp forests a thousand feet wide from El Capitan to Carpinteria. Boulders that come off hills and provide beds for kelp have also been worn down or stopped from entering the ocean by humans. “All we’re doing is putting back what humans stopped in the first place,” the founder said. “Giant kelp is a birthright. It’s like a sequoia tree. It’s the heart of our
marine ecosystem, and it keeps it alive. It’s the very nexus of the marine ecosystem, and from there, everything else blossoms.” He said the process of implementing the Goleta Bay reef will cost $300,000 to complete the permitting process, which takes about a year. Then the overall reef construction and implementation requires $3 million, and he said the money must come from donors. Mr. Goldblatt said he can offer donors the “best possible legacy anybody ocean-minded could ever want”: to name the reef after the donor.
“A reef is more permanent than a park,” the founder said. “There’s no back end business model here. We’re not selling carbon credits; we’re not harvesting kelp. It’s just public space mitigation. We’re relying on altruistic donors to do it.” He added that if the project doesn’t start the permitting process now, it could “lose political alignment.” His lecture detailing the Fish Reef Project aired this week on TV Santa Barbara, a community Please see reefs on A4
Coastal Dispensary, a Santa Barbara cannabis business, recently announced a $10,000 donation to Unity Shoppe to support access to healthy groceries for at-risk families during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a local nonprofit, Unity Shoppe provides free, healthy grocery choices to hundreds of qualifying community members in Santa Barbara. Pat Hitchcock, the director of donor relations at Unity Shoppe, said that the nonprofit appreciates the donation and supports the efforts to provide groceries in a safe environment for at-risk community members, through proper sanitation and social distancing policies. On top of its own efforts as a nonprofit, the Unity Shoppe organization is also a founding participant of Coastal Dispensary’s “Coastal Cares” program focused on homelessness and economic equality throughout the central coast. Employees at Coastal Cares are encouraged to give back to the community and volunteer with Unity Shoppe and PATH. “It’s very fulfilling to see newer local companies like Coastal Dispensary supporting the important work that Unity Shoppe has been doing for over 100 years for our community,” Montecito rock star Kenny Loggins said in a statement. “I’m very happy to see Coastal Dispensary working to create a positive impact in our nonprofit community, especially during these difficult times.” Mr. Loggins also helped Coastal Dispensary launch its Coastal Cares program and currently serves as Coastal’s community engagement ambassador. “Coastal is focused on encouraging a healthy, happy lifestyle which can only be achieved with access to healthy, nutritional food options,” Devon Wardlow, director of public affairs at Coastal Dispensary, said in a statement. “We are proud to support Unity Shoppe on an ongoing basis and the crucial services they provide to our community. As we get through this pandemic together, it is important that our nonprofit partners have the necessary resources to serve our community in a safe and sustainable manner.” As the pandemic rages on, Coastal Dispensary continues its focus on encouraging a happy, healthy lifestyle. Local Alzheimer’s Association chapter appoints new executive director By: BRIAN MACKLEY NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT
The Alzheimer’s Association has named Lindsey Leonard the new executive director of the California Central Coast Chapter. The chapter’s headquarters are in Santa Barbara. Ms. Leonard will succeed Interim Executive Director Kathryn Croskrey, who has overseen the chapter since December 2019 after the retirement of former executive director Rhonda Spiegel. “On our local level, an extensive search was conducted for our next executive director,” Leigh Cashman, the immediate past board chair, said in a statement. “It was vital that we selected a seasoned candidate familiar with the Central Coast communities, their leaders, volunteers and medical field. “This area is very diverse and ever changing, and we were looking for an executive director who could meet the many demands and challenges required to lead our large chapter as well as be a strong spokesperson for the cause. The organization is confident that Lindsey’s knowledge in fundraising and vast understanding of the needs of the Central Coast Region will take the organization to the next level.” Ms. Leonard has worked for 20 years with nonprofits. She has served as the executive director of the Teddy Bear Cancer

Foundation, vice president of development and operations for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Clara Valley, development director for Santa Barbara Channelkeeper and branch director for United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County. “It is a privilege to lead, with the support of a talented and dedicated staff team, such a special organization,” Ms. Leonard said in a statement. “The Alzheimer’s Association supports a predominantly elderly population and their families. They are more vulnerable now more than ever during COVID-19. It is essential that our visibility
is elevated during this critical time and that our programs are deepened to support the increasing needs of our service population.” As the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s and dementia care, support and research, the Alzheimer’s Association helps to provide access to free programs for the 690,000 patients in California. In addition to its Santa Barbara headquarters, the California Central Coast Chapter has offices in Santa Maria, Ventura and San Luis Obispo. It is gearing up for the nonprofit’s biggest annual fundraiser: the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimers. Due to COVID-19, this year’s Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimers event will be a little different than normal. For one thing, participants won’t gather together physically. Instead, they will walk with their family or team on their choice of a street, trail or track. The walk is set to take place Oct. 3 in Santa Maria and Nov. 7 in Santa Barbara. To participate, contact the California Central Coast chapter at lmleonard@alz.org or visit alz. org/cacentralcoast. SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS
“The one exclusive sign of thorough knowledge is the power of teaching. — Aristotle
ARIES — Your brain is likely to be working overtime, Aries. Things were going along just fine until you suddenly ran into an unexpected snag that kept you from where you want to be. It’s as if the hamster wheel you’ve been running on suddenly jammed. Even though you’re still working just as hard, the wheel simply won’t turn. Perhaps it’s time to step off and take a break. Get some perspective. TAURUS — Try not to get too wrapped up in the mental side of things, Taurus. Perhaps you’re trying to work everything through in your mind. You’ll find that there are strong forces outside your own trying their hardest to manipulate your thinking. It might be good to step away from the situation and do more processing with your heart. Go with your instincts rather than rely so much on your thoughts. GEMINI — -It’s possible that you’ve been so emotional about a certain issue that you’ve taken it way too far, Gemini. Fortunately, your reasoning has finally caught up with your feelings. Now it’s time for a reckoning. Give your brain a chance to sort things out and bring the situation back into equilibrium. Your first tendency may be to overreact and have things swing in the opposite direction. Do your best to resist this temptation. CANCER — You may experience a transformation in your thinking. It’s bound to affect every aspect of your life, Cancer. By always questioning, you work through difficult issues that require a constant reshuffling of viewpoints. Feel free to open yourself up to new ways of thinking as you dismiss old ways that no longer serve you. Now is a terrific time to consider a fresh wave of thought. You’ll be exposed to a new way of truth. LEO — You may be overwhelmed by an onslaught of communication from someone you didn’t expect to hear from, Leo. It could be that this person suddenly puts a monkey wrench in your plans. It’s important to adapt and allow for the constant changes that are bound to come your way. Don’t get so hung up on a certain way of doing things that you fail to see the wisdom in a new and different approach. VIRGO — Someone might feel obligated to give you their two cents even if you didn’t ask for it, Virgo. Be careful not to dismiss this information without giving it proper consideration. This knowledge comes to you for a reason, and it’s possible that it’s the very piece of information you need now in order to complete the puzzle. Don’t disregard anything, regardless +*#!2 +1$)"$ of how esoteric it seems.
LIBRA — It’s time to finally apply the knowledge you’ve accumulated and come to recognize the truth, Libra. Perhaps you’ve been sitting on the facts while contemplating their meaning. It’s now time to get this information out into the open. There’s no doubt that this action is likely to make waves, but that’s OK. A key theme of the day is transformation, so feel free to contribute your part. SCORPIO — When it comes to issues that require real thinking, be careful of letting someone else take control. You might have a rather lazy attitude in this department, Scorpio, and it could be tempting to simply let someone else do the thinking for you. This attitude is apt to lead you down the wrong path for you. Taking responsibility for yourself means thinking for yourself, so do it. SAGITTARIUS — There’s likely to be a powerful force at work trying to manipulate the way you think about a certain situation, Sagittarius. Be conscious of the source of your facts. It could be that someone is giving you tainted information so you’ll act in a way that is favorable to his or her plan. Others may not be looking out for your best interests, so it’s important that you are. Don’t accept things blindly without questi CAPRICORN — Don’t secondguess yourself today, Capricorn. It could be that you’re wavering so much about a decision that even after you make it, you hesitate to follow through with it. Once you make up your mind about something, stick with it. Have confidence in your own mental process. Once you begin to waver, it may be difficult to find the assurance that you need since you’ll inevitably slide down the slippery slope of self-doubt. AQUARIUS — Other people may try to wield their power even when it isn’t their place. This is one time when people may try to show off their IQ by offering random facts that don’t offer anything useful to the situation at hand but just serve to prove their knowledge of esoteric trivia. Try not to buy into other people’s displays of power, Aquarius. There’s more than likely a great deal of hype and not much substance. PISCES — Once your brain gets hooked on something, Pisces, you’re likely to take it to the extreme. Be careful of overworking yourself in a certain issue that requires a more rational, temperate attitude. You may get into trouble if you insist on going off the deep end. Don’t tackle issues you aren’t ready to handle. Take things slowly and maintain a moderate, conservative viewpoint. If you go too far, back off and take a break.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

bill
Continued from Page A1 and complicated issues. This bill is proof that when we work together, we can make a difference for our communities and our country, he said. The bill’s ultimate fate remains undecided. According to an Office of Management and Budget statement, President Donald Trump will veto the NDAA over “serious concerns. Those concerns included NDAA section 2829, which would require renaming of “certain military institutions and provisions that “micromanage aspects of the executive branch’s authority. The bill would restrict support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen and establish congressional oversight on the president’s use of the Insurrection Act. The NDAA also directs the U.S. Space Force to “report on efforts to “sustain and improve the resilience of infrastructure at the Vandenberg Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral ranges. partnerships, including partnerships at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UCSB. “If awarded, the funding would support the Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies (ICB) at UCSB – which isz a University Affiliated Research Center that advances biotechnology and biomedical research. Funding for Cal Poly would go to the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Lab, Ms. Haddad said. Cal Poly has a longstanding research partnership with the U.S. Air Force. In June, the school received a $2.5 million grant for its Aerospace Engineering Department and minisatellite program. The NDAA includes environmental protections and incorporates the Protecting America’s Wilderness Act, which includes the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act. Under the CCHPA, the federal protections will be extended to 250,000 acres of land in the Carrizo Plain and Los Padres National Forest.  email: pgonzalez@newspress.com
City of Solvang has no jurisdiction to remove Father Serra statue STATUE
Continued from Page A1 “extensive evidence documenting the historic nature of the statue. The city’s HPC report determined that the bronze statue of the California Missions founder that was erected in 1989 and stood until Thursday morning isn’t a historic landmark. Rather, the original stone statue from 1936 that the bronze statue replaced is actually “City of Ventura Landmark No. 3. Designated a landmark in 1974, the 1936 stone statue was removed for its bronze replacement due to the original deteriorating for years as a result of age, weather, and even getting doused in paint by vandals in 1980. The stone original is now sitting in “an advanced state of decay in the open storage yard of the crane operator who removed it in 1989, according to the memorandum. According to the HPC report, the bronze statue “Does not meet the 40-year threshold generally required for historic designation in the city of Ventura.
It continues, “As a commemorative statue that is a replica of a 1930s cast stone original, the 1989 statue is not potentially significant in its own right‌ Therefore, it is not a historical resource as defined by CEQA and its potential relocation would not constitute a significant impact to the environment.â€? The plaintiffs argue the conclusion runs against several key points, including: the bronze replacement being referred to as a “landmark renewedâ€? during its 1989 unveiling ceremony; the city of Ventura’s Downtown Specific Plan specifying the Father Serra statue as a historic resource; the city requiring a developer who proposed a condominium project in 2018 to make sure the project “integrates into the context of the Father Serra Statue (Landmark No. 3);â€? and the statue’s inclusion in a 2007 Historic Resources Group survey of historic landmarks in Ventura. Removing statues and monuments of the United States’ historical figures from public spaces has become a hot issue as of late. A petition calling for the
removal of the Father Serra statue from the Mission Santa Ines in Solvang circulated in the Santa Ynez Valley before Ventura’s decision to move the statue. In a statement responding to the petition, officials with the Santa Ines Mission said that while Father Serra’s involvement in Spanish colonial policy is “problematic and the Mission system “far from perfect, “there is no historical support for the attack on his character found in the wording of the petition and subsequent statements. It appears unlikely that the local statute will be removed, as the city of Solvang has no jurisdiction over its placement because it is located on private property. “We recognize the desire to remove statues that are on public property, but as a place of worship for thousands of Catholic faithful, we respectfully must affirm our First Amendment right to keep the statue of St. Junipero Serra safely on our mission grounds where it stands and where the faithful can visit and venerate it, the statement read.

Shoe strike looking to bring attention to climate justice By JORGE MERCADO NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
The Society of Fearless Grandmother’s Santa Barbara is sponsoring a special event from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday -- a shoe strike for climate justice. The event at the County Administration Building, at 105 E. Anapamu St., in Santa Barbara, is being brought to Santa Barbara in cooperation with 350SB and the Greta Thunberg Fridays for Future international organization. “When the pandemic happened, we started to try to think of other things to do and it is just so critical that we keep these issues in people’s awareness, because the climate crisis is serious,Irene Cooke, one of the event’s organizers and a member of the society, told the News-Press over the phone. Shoe strikes are a “COVID-safe demonstration, meaning there is no expectation for a crowd to show up. Instead, members of the society will set up the shoes to represent the people who would have been there if there was no current pandemic. “We’re not encouraging a large congregation of people for this event, but if people who walk past take pictures that’s fantastic, Ms. Cooke said. As the group’s name suggests,

Similar to the rally shown here, the Society of Fearless Grandmother’s Santa Barbara is sponsoring a special event Saturday in Santa Barbara.
the women are all elderly, hoping to make life better for their future generations of grandchildren and beyond. Organizers expect up to 500 pairs of shoes will be displayed Saturday. “I hope that the elected officials understand that that’s what people are saying. It’s not just, ‘Oh I’m going to throw away my shoes,’ they’re donating these shoes to stand in their place, to make a statement about climate
justice and to me, just having those donated shoes before we even start to display them, is really powerful. She added that she expects even more shoes next month due to the fact that they couldn’t accept every shoe donated because there is a quarantine period before people handle them. email: jmercado@newspress.com

Santa Barbara deals its aces for MLB’s Opening Day By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER
Kansas City will visit Cleveland today for Opening Day in Major League Baseball, but it’s shaping up more like the Battle of Greater Santa Barbara. Montecito’s Danny Duffy versus Goleta’s Shane Bieber. The two local residents will be pitted against each other as starting pitchers when the two American League clubs open the long-awaited baseball season at 4:10 p.m PDT at Cleveland’s Progressive Field. It will be Duffy’s third Opening Day start — he also pitched the Royals’ first games of 2017 and 2018 — but it also ranks as the most meaningful. The coronavirus delayed this season’s start by nearly four months and trimmed the 162-game schedule to just 60. “Even more so now, I’m really pumped about it,” he said of the assignment. “It means a lot to me. I’ve put in a lot of work.” Duffy, who was drafted by the Royals just after his graduation from Cabrillo High School in 2007, is a 31-year-old veteran with 181 starts during nine seasons in the big leagues. But Bieber, who turned 25 just two months ago, will be making his first Opening Day start as the new ace of the Indians. “I was able to put in some work during the quarantine and get ready to rock,” Bieber told reporters after pitching a simulated game on Sunday. “I feel we managed not only my buildup, but everybody’s buildup really well. “I feel as a team, we’re definitely ready to rock, but on a personal level, I’m stoked for Opening Day. I’m ready to go.” He’s never shied away from a challenge. Bieber, who came to the Gauchos as a non-scholarship player, told a group of young Indian fans this week that he barely made UCSB’s team during the autumn of 2013. “They’ve got guys who are on scholarship that they’re going to keep,” Bieber said. “It came down

At left, Cabrillo High School graduate Danny Duffy will pitch in his third Opening Day start today against the Cleveland Indians. to like me versus two other guys and I had to out-perform them in the fall. And fortunately, I did, and they were some pretty good ball players, too. “Fortunately, our head coach was a bit of a sucker for starting pitchers, and it ended up working out.” It worked out so well that Bieber won 23 games in three seasons at UCSB, ranking third in the school record books. He went 12-4 with a 2.74 ERA in 2016 to lead the Gauchos to their first and only College World Series. Just two years later, he got a midseason call-up to Cleveland and posted a win-loss record of 11-5. He followed that up by leading the Indians in victories last year with a 15-8 mark. Bieber also ranked third in the American League with 259 strikeouts and fourth in earned run average at 3.28. A defining moment came during last year’s MLB All-Star Game before a hometown crowd in Cleveland. He told the young Indian fans this week that it also became his most nerve-wracking moment when he lost a contact lens while warming up in the bullpen. “I couldn’t really see the bullpen catcher,” Bieber said. “I told the bullpen coach, ‘Dude, everything’s blurry.’… I was kind of freaking out. Everything started closing in a little bit.
“He asked, ‘Do you want me to call down and find somebody else?’ And I said, ‘No, we’re not doing that … I’ll go out there and we’ll figure it out.’” He wound up striking out the National League’s Willson Contreras, Ketel Marte and Ronald Acuna Jr. in succession to preserve the American League’s 1-0 lead. The A.L. continued on to win, 4-3, and Bieber was selected as the game’s Most Valuable Player. “I ended up figuring it out and I’d say it worked pretty well,” Bieber observed. “So long story short, now I only pitch with one contact in... No, I’m just kidding.” Duffy also had an interesting backstory to tell during the COVID19 hiatus. He helped Kansas City win the 2015 World Series, pitching in three of its five games against the New York Mets. But he said the Royals might not have made it to the Fall Classic had he been present for their epic rally against Houston in Game Four of the A.L. Divisional Series. The Royals were trailing 6-2 in the top of the eighth inning when he went to relieve himself in the bullpen’s bathroom. Two of his teammates promptly rapped singles. Fellow pitcher Chris Young quickly concluded that Duffy would help win the game by being a different kind of relief pitcher: by continuing his goodluck potty break.

RAFAEL MALDONADO/NEWS-PRESS
The upcoming junior at Providence School intends on donating all proceeds from the event to Santa Barbara Young Black Professionals. A GoFundMe campaign to support the race has already exceeded it’s goal of $1,000.
In her free time, Kaitlyn enjoys playing volleyball and recently started playing beach volleyball. She also likes baking and cooking. “I like exploring new recipes. Cakes, muffins, cookies,” she said with a laugh. All good things to burn off with a Saturday afternoon jog, which she plans on doing with her family. Kaitlyn admitted she didn’t know how the campaign would go when she first started. She has witnessed an outpouring of support from not just her local church community and close friends, but also from people from outside the area who she has never met. “It’s just been really encouraging in seeing how great our Santa Barbara community is,” Kaitlyn said. Several people have posted comments on the campaign site applauding her for her efforts. She has been blown away by how many people want to support the cause. Participating in the race will be voluntary, though Kaitlyn encourages people to take photos and post to social media using the hashtags #SBYBP and #runforcommUNITYSB. “I think it will be really cool just to see how many people participated, to see everyone
“I tried to come out,” Duffy revealed, “and he said, ‘Get back in that bathroom.’” He spent the next 20 minutes in the john. All he knew of Kansas City’s rally was what he could deduce from the crowd’s roar. “I didn’t get to see it, didn’t get to see a single pitch,” Duffy said. “I poked my head down to see who’s like warming up and C.Y. said, ‘Get back in there!’ I was like, ‘OK.’ Same seat, same spot, keep the vibe kind of alive.” Young finally let Duffy out of the bathroom after the Royals had scored five runs to take a 7-6 lead. The local left-hander has gotten plenty of chances to pitch the last decade. He enters today’s game with 60 career wins. His best season came in 2016 when he went 12-3 with 188 strikeouts and a 3.83 ERA. Duffy had a good start to spring training when the coronavirus put a break on play. He had pitched six scoreless innings in two games, allowing just four hits with nine strikeouts. Manager Mike Matheny even announced that the Opening Day start would go to either Duffy or Brad Keller, last year’s No. 1. And then Keller came down with COVID-19 on July 7. He returned to training only this week. “I feel so bad for Brad,” Duffy said. “I really wanted this to be a competition. I thought it would be a heated one. But I’m ready for it, man.” The game will be played without fans, which Duffy admits will make for an adjustment. “I know we’re not going to have the atmosphere… It is going to be different,” he said. “But we’re going to be ready for it. You can normalize anything if you put your mind to it. “We’re a team that’s younger than it has been in the past. This format may very well play right into our hands and I’m really looking forward to seeing how we do, how we fare.” The break, after all, is over — potty or otherwise. email: mpatton@newspress.com
participating with their family or friends, and to see pictures and the evidence,” she said. Ms. Tang said she is very proud of her daughter for doing something to make a positive impact in what has been a difficult time for many. “Hopefully this will bring a good, positive change,” Ms. Tang said. Kaitlyn said she doesn’t have a specific goal in mind when it comes to how many people participate, but she is excited to see how many people post about the event. Moving forward, Kaitlyn said she hopes to do an annual fundraiser to encourage community involvement. While it remains unclear what the next year will bring, she said “it would be really cool just to keep it going.” “We know that racism has been going on for hundreds and hundreds of years, but I think especially because of media and because of social media, there’s been a lot more news and attention on it,” Kaitlyn said. “I think it’s just really important that unity is something that we can (use) to celebrate our differences. “Even though we might look different, we might have different backgrounds or resources, I think it’s just really important to know that together we can be much stronger than just individually.” To learn more about the GoFundMe campaign, visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/ run-for-community-5k. email: mwhite@newspress.com
Some businesses in the area are in favor of street closure closure
Continued from Page A1 years. “I’ve still not had one person from the city contact me, which I think is wrong,” she said to the News-Press. “I think I deserve some consideration. I don’t think anybody’s really taken into account the bigger picture here.” Ms. Ayers said changing the traffic flow will be difficult for her repair shop, and she now has to figure out new ways and marketing strategies to direct her customers to the right place. “The majority of my customers are older and we try to keep them away from the corridor where the bus station is so they’re out of the buses,” she said. “So having them come over from the Riviera just down and over Victoria is simple. It’s easy.” Now, she fears her customers being able to find her shop and getting around the heavily trafficked area. In addition, Ms. Ayers is worried about the parking spaces that will be removed, cars that drop off handicapped individuals in front of the restaurants, delivery trucks and what she
sees as an unnatural detour. “I have to pay (the downtown organization fee) just like everybody else here has to pay it, so I think I should be considered,” the owner said. “I think parklets were a good idea, so what’s wrong with a parklet over here on Victoria street?” She said she tried contacting the city prior to the closure to express her opposition, but when she did that, she was asked to prove how this would negatively affect her business. “I have to prove to them how it’s going to harm my business such as car count and things like that. How can I tell them that? I don’t know. And I don’t think that’s my job to tell them. I think it’s their job to do a study themselves,” Ms. Ayers said. She added that she “can’t get a straight answer out of anybody” about how long it’s going to last. On top of that, she said she only had a few days to speak up. “I fully feel for the smaller businesses and restaurants, but I’m a small business too,” she said. “Not everybody’s happy.” In addition, she mentioned that if it came down to a petition for a permanent closure, “I will fight that.” Marge Cafarelli, the owner of the Public Market, called the closure a “lifeline.”
“I’ve been communicating with Ensemble and there’s no issue with traffic flow,” she said. “We’ve left a whole lane for emergency vehicles. Ensemble isn’t blocked at all. “I’m very happy. The Public Market has already got about 60 seats out in the street,” Ms. Cafarelli told the News-Press. “This is all when we’re shut down. When we get back up and running and Ensemble is able to seat people, that will be a happy day because we’ll be able to seat people inside, too.” Mitchell Sjerven, the owner of Bouchon, said he’s a “huge fan” of the closure. “I know there was some controversy with some of the blocks on State Street, but we were universal in our approach here because we’re all more or less in the same boat,” he told the News-Press. “Businesses and restaurants love the idea of being able to have this street for our guests to be able to dine safely outside. “I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to try to enhance what we’ve already started on State Street and see what sort of impact it could have with a side street in conjunction. It’s probably the best place to experiment with it. We have the highest concentration of restaurants in Santa Barbara besides the Funk Zone.” email: gmccormick@newspress.com

Holgate’s arm saves Foresters By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER
Santa Barbara Foresters used four strong arms on the pitcher’s mound and another in right field to hold off Santa Maria Pea Soup Andersen’s for a 3-1, summer collegiate baseball victory at Pershing Park on Thursday night. The game ended when right fielder Ryan Holgate threw out Santa Maria’s Connor Gurnik as he tried to run from first base to third on Alex Crosby’s single. Gurnik represented the tying run since Sam Dexter would’ve scored Pea Soup’s second run ahead of him. The Foresters (18-3) have now beaten Santa Maria in seven of their eight meetings, with three of the victories coming by two runs or less. Santa Barbara starter Kyle Luckham of Cal State Fullerton pitched a one-hitter in his six innings of work. He walked none and struck out four. He left with no decision, however, after getting matched by Sean Johnson for four innings and Chase Walter for the next two. Santa Maria threatened to take the lead in the top of the seventh when reliever Casey Dykstra gave up a walk to Alex Bash and a single to Nate Gatewood with one out. But Dykstra fielded Crosby’s comebacker to start an inningending double play. The Foresters, who were held to just four hits through the first six innings, rallied for all three of their runs in the bottom of
the seventh to get Dykstra the pitching win. Graham led off with a single, took third on Branden Boissiere’s hit and scored on a sacrifice fly by Noah Cardenas. One out later, Sean McLain and Bryce Warrecker rapped consecutive, RBI singles. Matthew McLain led the Foresters’ nine-hit attack, although his 2-for-4 day actually dropped his team-leading batting average from .516 to .515. His two hits included his teambest eighth double of the season. It was the only extra-base hit of the game for either team. Cal teammates Steven Zobac and Nick Proctor, both of whom were added to Santa Barbara’s roster this week, closed out the game by pitching an inning apiece. Pea Soup rallied in the ninth when Jackson Smith led off with an eight-pitch walk. Pinch runner Travis Welker took second when Dexter reached safely on an infield error. After a strikeout, Gurnik’s single scored Welker and moved Dexter to second. Dexter, however, had yet to cross home plate by the time Gurnik was tagged out at third base on Crosby’s two-hit single to right. The Foresters will return to Pershing Park tonight at 6 o’clock to play the So Cal Giants. Santa Maria will return to town for games at 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. email: mpatton@newspress.com
