Goats help community Herd helps with Valle Verde’s landscaping for fire prevention By PAUL GONZALEZ NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

A herd of goats is eating its way through Valle Verde to protect the senior living community from wildfires. Steve Freire, Valle Verde’s director of buildings and grounds, enlisted the help of 805 Goats owner Scott Morris and his herd of more than 120 goats to help clear out flammable invasive plant species including invasive weeds, mustard, chaparral, thistle and even poison oak. “Poison oak is their favorite; it’s like dessert to them,” Mr. Morris told the News-Press. His herd will clear out vegetation from a five-acre swath of land off Torino Drive near Hidden Oaks Road. Valle Verde’s main office is located at 900 Calle De Los Amigos. Mr. Freire told the News-Press that Valle Verde first brought goats onto the 60-acre Santa Barbara campus for vegetation control last year. “We investigated it, and I interviewed a couple of goat herd companies to bring their herd so they could graze all of the fire fuel. They graze down the grass, weeds, chaparral and anything else that they can reach,” Mr. Freire said. “It’s doing everything we need from an emergency management and fire obligation standpoint. And it brings so much joy to the community. It’s a triple win,” Mr. Freire said. He explained that the goats don’t need any training or encouragement to start chomping on the flammable brush. Once the goat herders set up a fenced area for them to graze in, the goats mow down practically everything they can get their teeth into. The larger goats will even prop themselves up on small oak saplings trim lowhanging branches. “Goats are great because they consume from the flower and Please see goats on A2

Pure Maintenance sterilization provides effective option for local businesses to combat COVID-19 By JORGE MERCADO Maintaining one’s own health has been the key for people across the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wearing masks, constantly washing your hands and avoiding touching your face has been the most prevalent discourse from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the hopes one can avoid catching the novel coronavirus. While person-to-person contact appears to be the most common way to contract the virus, surfaces can also carry the virus, thus the importance of hand washing multiple times a day. This is also why many businesses that have reopened recently have made it a point to constantly disinfect high-touch areas.

And while businesses and schools try their best to sanitize everything, there may be a better option — Pure Maintenance. Pure Maintenance of Santa Barbara County recently became a member of the Master Clean USA family of companies and is the proud owner of a world-class sterilization process. A couple of weeks ago, Pure Maintence’s InstaPURE was included on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency N-List of COVID-19 disinfectants effective at killing the human coronavirus. “InstaPURE... is an organic FDA approved, EPA registered food surface safe chemical. It breaks down into oxygen, water and vinegar, it leaves no residue and has no toxicity. Yet as a cold sterilant it is one of the safest and highly efficacious Please see purification on A9

Father Larry Gosselin to star in parade

‘Nothing that rivals what we do’ NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

A local group is trying to rename San Andres Street on Santa Barbara’s Westside. The Dolores Huerta Street Renaming Project is looking to change the street name to “Calle Dolores Huerta” to honor Dolores Huerta, a labor leader and civil rights activist who launched the National Farm Workers Association alongside César Chávez to fight for farmworker rights in California. The activist has won several

awards for her service and advocacy for farmworkers, immigrants and women. Her awards include the Presidential Medal of Freedom and induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. She’s the first Latina to receive those honors. Miguel Avila, a real-estate agent who has lived in Santa Barbara for almost 48 years, is one of the leaders of the project. “Her history speaks for itself. She spent 75 years fighting for women’s rights and continues

Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara organizers announced on Wednesday that long-time supporter and friend of Fiesta, Father Larry Gosselin, has been named the new Grand Marshal of the Reimagined 2020 Fiesta Caravan Parade. Featuring classic cars and decorated vehicles, the caravan parade is set to take place on Aug. 7, and will go through Santa Barbara and Montecito neighborhoods. MONTECITO — The ninth annual Montecito Motor Classic has been postponed to September 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The event, held annually since 2012, has been rescheduled in the interest of public health and safety. The car show was held at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club in 2019 and organizers hope to return there next year, according to a news release. “We’ll miss the families, the friends and the cars in 2020, Dolores Morelli Johnson, founder of the Montecito Motor Classic, said in a statement. “But we will come back stronger in 2021 with more to enjoy and, most importantly, we’ll help our local charities get back on their feet. In lieu of attending the event, organizers request the public

consider donating to the three charities that receive support from the annual event: the Santa Barbara Police Activities League; the Santa Barbara Police Foundation; and Drag Racing Against Gangs and Graffiti. “The Montecito Motor Classic is an event put on for and by the community, Michael Hammer, co-chair and title sponsor for the event, said in a statement. “It’s a free event for attendees, and each year we raise thousands through our sponsors which we put right back into the community, helping local first responders. They need us now more than ever and we will help them through these tough times just as they have helped so many of us. Official details on next year’s event will be released in the summer of 2021.

Warning issued for drain blockages SANTA BARBARA — The city of Santa Barbara has issued a warning to residents, advising against the pouring of fats, oils and grease down sewer drains that could cause overflows or blockages. Fats, oils and grease — FOG — is one of the leading causes of sewer issues throughout the country. The city’s warning comes after city wastewater staff responded to a heavy amount of FOG at a sewer pump station and removed approximately 300 pounds of semi-solid grease before it caused equipment or system blockage issues, said Madeline Wood, water conservation supervisor for the city. “Pouring FOG down the drain can create obstructions in your private sewer lateral, public sewer mains, and creates serious problems like blockages and sewer overflows,â€? Ms. Wood said in a news release. “As the FOG material cools down, it begins to stick to the sewer pipes and other materials in the sewer system. Over time, a FOG buildup can cause maintenance issues on sewer pump stations, or clog an entire pipeline and result in sewer overflows in your property or the community.â€? Response and repairs for such incidents could cost residents and the city thousands of dollars, Ms. Wood said. The city offered the following tips to prevent FOG-related issues: • Do not pour cooking oil, greasy food, dairy products or

Father Gosselin said in a statement. “It’s an honor that I never could have imagined that I would be given, with all the highest respect, esteem, and admiration I have always held for the community of Santa Barbara.â€? A nonprofit dedicated to honoring and preserving Santa Barbara’s history, spirit, culture, heritage and traditions, Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara is putting safety first during this year’s Fiesta 2020. Due to COVID-19, many signature events will be held virtually or in ways to follow social distancing guidelines. This year’s theme for Fiesta 2020 is “Vamos a Bailar!â€? That means “Let’s Dance!â€? “It is my great hope and sincere aspiration, in being asked to serve as Grand Marshal of the Fiesta Parade, that I might be able to tap into the great inspiration of the late and great Fr. Virgil, with all that he brought and left to this community, and to bring some of his spirit into our celebration and call of unity for all people,â€? salad dressing down the drain. • Use strainers in the sink drain to catch food scraps and other solids. • Do not use hot water and soap to try to wash FOGs down the train. It will eventually cool and harden in the sewer lines. • Pour FOG into a disposable container, cover with a tightfitting lid, and place in your freezer. Once frozen, toss it in the garbage. • Mix FOG with absorbent materials such as coffee grounds or cat litter and throw in the trash. • Wipe or scrape FOG from pots, pans and dishes into the trash can before placing them in the sink for washing. • And use a paper towel to wipe excess FOG from pots, pans and dishes and toss it in the garbage. A study found that reef sharks are going functionally extinct in some areas, largely due to overfishing. Researchers collected data from 58 nations on 371 reefs.

Reef sharks’ future

Study shows species is going functionally extinct in some areas

T

he worldwide population of reef sharks is slowly on the decline. A study published on July 22 in the journal Nature showed that sharks are almost completely absent from reefs in several nations. Using more than 15,000 standardized, baited remote underwater video stations on 371 reefs in 58 nations, researchers observed no sharks on almost 20% of the reefs. The study went further to investigate the reason behind the decline, and it provided concrete solutions to conserve these animals. The problem mostly stems from humans. “One of the major contributing factors to the decline is fishing. We already knew that, and this study definitely showed that,” Dr. Jenn Caselle, a research biologist at the UCSB Marine Science Institute, told the News-Press. Dr. Caselle is one of 150 authors of this study. She and Darcy Bradley, co-director of the Ocean and Fisheries program at the university’s Environmental Market Solutions Lab, both contributed a vital portion of the study. Dr. Caselle and Ms. Bradley collected and reported data at Palmyra Atoll, an American territory in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Dr. Caselle described this area as a “very, very healthy, almost pristine system.” “It was a really important endpoint for the study, because since every measure they had was relative to the other, the data would all be very similar, and you wouldn’t be able to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy ones,” Dr. Caselle said. “Our contribution was important because it provided a healthy system by which all the other systems could be compared to.” The study, according to Dr. Caselle, was a snapshot all around the globe, and she suspects many new studies will come out of this large collaboration. To measure shark abundance, researchers deployed cameras that Dr. Caselle said are pretty comparable to GoPros — “easy to handle and not too high-tech.” From there, the researchers go through the entire video until they find the single frame in the video with the Please see sharks on A5

To collect data, researchers deployed GoPro-like cameras to capture video of reef activity. To measure abundance, researchers would watch the footage and find the single frame with the largest amount of sharks. Of those drops, 63% saw no sharks.

Of those camera drops, 63% saw no sharks. “The major correlation we found with places that had no sharks or very few sharks was actually proximity to a high density of humans,” Dr. Caselle said. “They’re fished for both their fins and their meat. That’s one of the biggest problems.” She added that the study’s proposed solutions set it apart from other research. “This wasn’t just another documentation of the demise of our oceans,” Dr. Caselle said. “It gave actionable advice.” The advice was to ban or at least reduce overfishing of sharks and their prey. Specifically, the study called to lessen the use of longlines and gillnets, which the researchers classified as destructive fishing practices. “We’re not talking about tiger sharks or blue sharks. These are the ones you might see swimming along the coral reefs that generally do not pose a threat to humans,” Dr. Caselle said. She added the average length of reef sharks ranges from 3 feet to 7 or 8 feet. “The best remedies are marine-protected areas or shark conservation zones,” the biologist

continued. “We recognize that might not be a very acceptable solution for a lot of countries that may depend on fishing sharks for food.” While reef sharks aren’t going extinct all over the world, Dr. Caselle said that for a community very in tune with the ocean, it’s a good reminder that “the ocean is not so vast that we can’t harm it.” “I’ve gotten a firsthand look into what our oceans can be like,” she said. “I feel like I have this understanding of what it should

look like that a lot of people don’t have, so to see some of these places maybe get back to looking like that would be really amazing.” email: gmccormick@newspress.com

CODEWORD PUZZLE

you. LIBRA — There’s tension in the air today, Libra. Even though it isn’t your doing, you may want to keep a low profile, especially if you need to work. Try to avoid any discussions. Just because someone is confrontational doesn’t mean you have to rise to the bait. It would be better if you didn’t. Keep to yourself and all of this will blow over by tomorrow when it will be safe to mingle again. SCORPIO — You’re a dreamer at heart, Scorpio. You prefer not to think about material things. That explains why you tend to forget groceries or dry cleaning. You’re happiest if things get done for you. But circumstances today will force you to handle some of these mundane chores. You’ll feel better by day’s end just knowing you can be self-sufficient even if you don’t want to be. SAGITTARIUS — If you follow your instincts and dare to take some risks, Sagittarius, you’ll be handsomely rewarded. You have the capability to make a good project great. Do your best not to get distracted today. Keep your eye on the big picture rather than let yourself get bogged down in details. You’ll find that when you take care of the big issues, the little ones take care of themselves. CAPRICORN — Finally, Capricorn, you’ll be able to breathe a long overdue sigh of relief. It’s likely that you’ve been worried about your finances for some time. Well, you need worry no longer. The events of today either put you back in the black or show you a clear path to get there. You’ve been working hard to resolve these financial matters. You can now start working smarter. AQUARIUS — Separate the wheat from the chaff today. Look at your relationships and decide who your true friends are. You’re loyal, which is to your credit, but why be loyal to people who don’t return it? You’ve given these socalled friends plenty of chances to demonstrate their affection. It’s time to let them fall by the wayside and free up time to spend with your real friends. PISCES — Whether you acknowledge it or not, Pisces, creation is the central theme of your life. If you aren’t an artist or writer, you should be. There are plenty of creative ideas in your head clamoring to be expressed. Why not give it a try? You have nothing to lose, and you may be astonished by what you’re able to produce. Your brain does have two sides. It’s time to use both.

“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. — George Orwell

ARIES — You seem to be filled with questions, Aries. Some of them are big, some trivial. All you know is that they preoccupy you, and the answers aren’t readily apparent. Don’t fret. All that will change by day’s end. The planetary configurations are such that all the confusing events of recent days will begin to make sense. Your world will once again seem calm and orderly. Enjoy it. TAURUS — You’re an individual, Taurus, but sometimes it’s hard for you to suppress your uniqueness in order to get the job done. It may not be you. The problem may be your job. If you’re feeling like you don’t have enough fun in your life or you aren’t using the full potential of your creativity, this might be a good time to make a change - a big change. You’re ready to take on new challenges. GEMINI — Your ego may be bruised by events from a few days back. Has it occurred to you that it’s within your power to right the wrong you feel was done to you? It isn’t a matter of confrontation but of conversation. The person in question is probably unaware of what they did or said. An expression of your dismay might elicit an apology. You’ll both feel better for having cleared the air. CANCER — Today’s planetary configurations are pushing you to get some perspective on your life and the lives of people closest to you, Cancer. You must admit that you’ve been rather selfish lately. You aren’t the center of the universe, so why do you sometimes act like you are? This is a day to make amends with friends and loved ones. They’ll welcome you back with open arms. LEO — This is a day to be up front with your partner, Leo. It’s possible that your relationship has reached some sort of stalemate. It’s up to you to get that fire burning brightly once again. How? You know the drill - romantic time alone is all it takes. A nice outfit, a reservation at the best restaurant, and you and your mate are back in business. VIRGO — This is a day of untold opportunity, Virgo. If you’ve been concerned that you haven’t been using your full creative potential, you can put that concern to rest today. Your creativity is boundless and you’ll finally realize it. Be on the lookout for any unusual opportunities. Someone or something you encounter could have meaningful ripple effects on +*#!2 +1$)"$

LIFE

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

disinfectants or sterilants known to man, Skip Jankoski, CEO of Pure Maintenance, told the News-Press over the phone. InstaPURE is a dry-fogging system that completely sterilizes anything the air touches within a treated building, achieving critical dwell times on every aspect of the treated surfaces. “We deliver it through a pressurized nozzle system and as that vapor engulfs that space, anything the air touches in that space will be completely sterilized, Mr. Jankoski said. The dry fog travels throughout the entire air space, achieving a uniform biocidal activity and killing everything in that space. InstaPURE is step one of Pure Maintenance’s two-step process aimed at reducing the total microbial and viral load of any treated surfaces to nearly zero. Step two is known as everPure, essentially the same dry-fogging system that is then treated with a federally approved three-month antimicrobial, meaning that microbes will not form for 90 days. Weekly testing is then done to document the cleanliness of the facility, which is then emailed to the patron.

“I will say this unequivocally, there is nothing that rivals what we do to enable our fellow Santa Barbarans — and other parts of the world,â€? said Mr. Jankoski, who also serves as the president of commercial ventures for Master Clean USA. “There’s nobody more committed to helping Santa Barbara get back to some semblance of normalcy and we are by far the best way to do it.â€? Mr. Jankoski also worked for more than two decades in the microbiology field. This experience helped him learn that biopharmaceutical companies around the world use the same process as instaPURE to disinfect their buildings. “They used very toxic chemicals before that, one of which was formaldehyde to disinfect their clean rooms and production facilities. Now, it stands to reason and it is obvious that a disinfecting protocol in a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility‌ has to be very stringent. That’s why they went this route,â€? Mr. Jankoski said. These chemicals can be found in sprays and cans, but the required dwell times needed cannot be comparably achieved using manually applied wet-chemical disinfectants, oftentimes due to human error. “It’s not just the top of the desk. It’s the side of the desk, the legs of the desk, the underside of the desk, so if a student, a teacher, a parent, a staff member touches any aspect

of that which has not been properly disinfected, then you did not kill that what you intended to kill. While many businesses have reopened with thorough cleaning protocols, many never receive the same training as biopharmaceutical companies. “Most infectious control people in a hospital or people that are charged with disinfecting, sterilizing and maintaining clean spaces, they need to get trained. Nobody is being trained in Santa Barbara, Mr. Jankoski said. Mr. Jankoski said he has not received many calls from local businesses. This may be due to most businesses working remotely, though many have expressed interest in returning to the office setting. While they can do their own cleaning, it might not accomplish what Pure Maintenance can. “This is the biggest benefit to anybody who is going to have the general public come into any space, Mr. Jankoski said. Once the system is in place, all that is needed is to follow the steps left by the staff to wipe surfaces with soap and hot water every day. Mr. Jankoski hopes more people can learn about the work Pure Maintenance can do for businesses or the general public, as well as the county Public Health Department. “If county health officials knew what they had at their disposal to fos-

ter and facilitate a more healthy environment within the spaces of Santa Barbara, they would be satisfied and better equipped to offer more appropriate direction to people who just want their concerns alleviated, Mr. Jankoski said. “I acknowledge that they’re not in the business of endorsing but neither is the CDC, and most people uniformly misinterpret a CDC N-list chemical as an endorsement. It is not. The CDC is not in the business of endorsing, they are in the business of documenting and recommending. Pure Maintenance does not eliminate COVID-19 or transmission from person-to-person contact. It is not a vaccine nor a treatment option, but it provides a space “no one else can provide. “If you have a barrel fire in front of your house, you could put it out with a squirt bottle. Is it overkill for a 747 to come in and drop two tons of retardant on it? Yeah, that’s overkill. But it got the job done, Mr. Jankoski said. “We are so comprehensive in what we do that there is no human error. It just doesn’t exist and we are using something that anybody in the infectious world knows is safe and the most effective form of sterilization. For more information, visit puremaintanencesb.com. email: jmercado@newspress.com

High schools face scheduling puzzle with football’s restart in January By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

The newest sport for high school athletic directors is a complicated game called football rescheduling: “The whole thing has become a Rubik’s Cube,” Cabrillo A.D. Gary West said, referring to the 3-D combination puzzle that was popularized during the 1980s, “and I wasn’t a big fan of that game.” The COVID-19 pandemic recently forced the California Interscholastic Federation to postpone its fall sports season, moving the start of football season by more than four months. Some schools such as Dos Pueblos and Carpinteria were able to transfer their football schedules with ease, but most weren’t so lucky. Santa Barbara High, which hasn’t played a game at Peabody Stadium since Oct. 7, 2016, is still looking for an opponent for its Jan. 8 opener — which will also be its first game at the newly reconstructed facility. “Our previously scheduled opponent has had some travel restrictions put on them from their administration,” Dons’ A.D. Todd Heil said. He’s searching far and wide for a replacement and has even reached out to schools in the CIF’s Los Angeles City Section. If he fails to find an opponent, Santa Barbara’s first two games would be on the road, at Righetti and then San Marcos, before it finally unveils the new Peabody Stadium on Jan. 29 against Ventura. The Jan. 22 Big Game against the Royals, who have been moved from the Channel League to the Pacific View League, will be the first non-conference meeting between the two arch-rivals since the early 1970s. Heil did receive a stroke of luck in solving the new puzzle of football scheduling: “Our Week Zero game at Saugus has been moved to Week Five (Feb. 5) since we both had a bye that week,” he said. The CIF-Southern Section’s original fall calendar allowed schools to schedule their 10 football games during an 11week span. But its new Januaryto-March calendar is just 10

The San Marcos High football team was excited to open last season with an Aug. 23 home game against Santa Paula, a contest it won 36-14. The Royals, however, still don’t have an opponent for this year’s season opener, which has been moved to Jan. 8 by COVID-19 pandemic precautions.

weeks long with no byes, which effectively lops off the Week Zero games that had been originally scheduled for Aug. 21. The issue was further complicated by the decision of the CIF-Central Section, which includes schools from Santa Maria as well as San Luis Obispo County, to stick with an 11-week calendar. “We have two Central Section teams on our schedule — Nipomo and Santa Maria — and we’d like to keep them,” Cabrillo’s West said. “We want to stay as local as possible and play someone that we can be competitive with. “Nipomo had Santa Ynez as their Week Zero. But now Santa Ynez can’t play on Week Zero, and we had Nipomo as our Week One. It became a real mess.” Some maneuvering, however, allowed Cabrillo to keep Nipomo for its Jan. 8 opener on the new turf field at Lompoc’s Huyck Stadium. Lompoc High did have to make the concession of moving its home opener against Paso Robles to Thursday, Jan. 7. Santa Ynez will open its season at Fillmore before playing on its own new turf field on Jan. 15 against Nordhoff. “We were able to work with Santa Maria and Nipomo to lock in our games with them, so everything worked out,” Pirates’

athletic director Ashley Coelho said. Lompoc A.D. Claudia Terrones helped Santa Barbara solve part of its own scheduling puzzle. “We moved our Righetti game to Week Three (Jan. 22), and now play Cabrillo on Week Two (Jan. 15) so Santa Barbara could play Righetti Week Two,” she said. San Marcos A.D. Abe Jahadhmy, like Santa Barbara’s Heil, is still in need of a Week One opponent. “We lost Week Zero versus Santa Paula and Week One versus Santa Maria,” said Jahadhmy, noting the mismatching calendars of the Southern and Central sections. He did get one scheduling break, however. “By luck, we had a wrong week scheduled for Nordhoff,” Jahadhmy said. “As a result, we are playing them on our bye week Jan. 29. This frees up Jan. 15 and we were able to add Santa Maria on that date. “All we now need is Week One.” Dos Pueblos’ first two games are at Nordhoff and Ventura. It will play its home opener at Scott O’Leary Stadium against Buena on Jan. 22. The Chargers’ game against rival San Marcos, a non-league contest like the Big Game, will be played on Feb. 5 at Warkentin Family Stadium.

Carpinteria, a member of the Citrus Coast League, is tentatively set to open its season at Brentwood on Jan. 8 before playing its home opener against Mary Star of the Sea on Jan. 15. “We are confirming with our non-league opponents,” athletic director Pat Cooney said. “We have a number of non-league opponents that are out of the county so there may be some adjustments.” Aaron Skinner, who took over as Bishop Diego’s A.D. on July 1, had a schedule in need of one of the biggest makeovers. “We were left having to shuffle and reschedule four games due to the changes,” he said. He finally locked in all 10 dates on Tuesday, with Bishop playing its Jan. 8 opener at home against Righetti — its original Week Zero opponent. Righetti, a Central Section power, is ironically the only Santa Barbara County opponent on the Cardinals’ schedule. “We didn’t want to lose our only game that was played against a local school, especially given the recommendations from the NFHS (to limit travel),” Skinner said. That move did create a domino effect, knocking Bakersfield’s Garces Memorial High School off Bishop’s schedule. The Cardinals will now travel to Paraclete on Jan. 15 and Redondo Union on Jan. 22 before returning home for games against Palm Desert and then Pacifica. Bishop had originally scheduled Reno’s Galena High for Week Five, but Nevada won’t start its football season until February, “This allowed us to look for a Week Five opponent and we were fortunate to be able to schedule a tough, local game versus reigning CIF State (Division 2A) champion Pacifica,” Skinner said. The Cardinals will open Camino League play against St. Bonaventure in another home game on Feb. 12. “At the end of the day, it all worked out very well, and we couldn’t be happier with the schedule that we have set,” Skinner said. email: mpatton@newspress.com

GSAC officially adjusts fall sports By MITCHELL WHITE NEWS-PRESS ASSOCIATE EDITOR

The Golden State Athletic Conference announced the delay of some fall sports Thursday, which will impact conference play for Westmont College volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer. The announcement comes two days after the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced the postponement of fall sports until the spring. The exact schedule for volleyball and soccer is yet to be determined, though conference play will be delayed until Jan. 1, 2021. The decision does not affect non-conference play or limit practices, according to Ron Smith, sports information director for Westmont. “The climate around the global

Bieber shines By GERRY FALL NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Former UCSB star Shane Bieber dazzled again for the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night. Bieber struck out 13 batters and shut out the Minnesota Twins for eight innings to lead the Indians to a 2-0 win. Bieber’s 13 strikeouts combined with 14 in his season opener last week against the Kansas City Royals gives him 27, tying him with former Brooklyn Dodger Karl Spooner, who accomplished the feat in 1954. Bieber eclipsed Curt Schilling’s mark of 26 strikeouts over his first two starts in 2002 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Bieber allowed three hits and didn’t walk a batter to earn his second victory in as many starts this season. He has yet to allow a run in 14 innings pitched. email: gfall@newspress.com

pandemic has unfortunately not improved in areas of California over the past few weeks,” GSAC commissioner Mike Daniels said in a statement. “We held out a lot of hope to conduct the fall sports during their normal calendar months, but that is not feasible any longer.” As part of Wednesday’s decision, the GSAC Cross Country Championships have been left as scheduled, as postponement would have created an interference with the indoor and outdoor track and field season. “Assuming clearance from state and local officials, Westmont’s cross country teams will compete in meets during the fall in advance of the GSAC Championships,” Smith said. Dates for the men’s and women’s soccer tournaments will be adjusted to take place

after regular season games have concluded. Before the coronavirus pandemic, the GSAC voted to not conduct a volleyball championship. Instead, the GSAC’s automatic berth into the NAIA Volleyball Championship will be granted to the regular season conference champions. No dates have been set for fall sports championships, though current discussions have centered on conducting the tournaments in April. By doing so, those championships would be scheduled between the winter sports championships, which would include basketball, swimming and indoor track and field. The winter championships would be conducted in March. The spring sports championships, including baseball, tennis, golf, outdoor track and field, would be

held in May. “The decisions made by the NAIA this week, and those announced by the GSAC today, provide maximum flexibility for our fall programs,” said Westmont’s athletic director Dave Odell. “The soccer and volleyball programs will be able to begin practice in the fall and schedule non-conference games, providing it is safe to do so. While healthy and safety is our first concern, we are committed to offering our student-athletes as full a college athletics experience as possible during these unprecedented times.” Men’s and women’s basketball were unaffected by the GSAC announcement, with both teams still scheduled to begin play in November.

Nick Oakley’s push-bunt single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Santa Barbara Foresters a 5-4, walkoff victory over Santa Maria Pea Soup Andersen’s in a summer collegiate baseball game at Pershing Park. Oakley bunted up the firstbase line and beat Santa Maria first baseman Jamey Smart to the bag to score Noah Cardenas and give the Foresters their 11th-straight victory. Santa Barbara (24-3) will play its final home game tonight at 6 p.m. against the So Cal Giants. Spectators are not allowed because of COVID-19 restrictions. The Foresters, who’ve belted 31 home runs and 92 extra-base hits in 27 contests, used small ball to end a game which had been stuck at 4-4 since the fifth inning. Cardenas hit a one-out single,

Oakley ignited the Foresters’ comeback in the bottom of the fourth when he singled home Cardenas, with Sean McLain following him home on an error. Santa Maria answered in the next inning with a pair of ground-rule doubles by Smart and Alex Crosby for a 4-2 lead. Matthew McLain triggered a game-tying rally in the bottom of the fifth when he blasted a leadoff triple and continued home on a fielding error. Bryce Warrecker singled one out later, took second on a hit batter and scored on a single by Cardenas. Five Forester relievers allowed just two hits over the last five innings.
