Residents of Santa Barbara are debating the history of the Westside street name “San Andres,” which was named after a native-born Californian in 1810. Andrés Pico saved many soldiers’ lives in the Mexican-American War as Captain and signed the Treaty of Cahuenga, which pardoned all combatants and granted protection and all privileges of american citizenship, according to Santa Barbara historian Neal Graffy.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new private home in Santa Barbara is confirmed to be a mansion in Montecito. The couple reportedly spent $14.65 million on their ninebedroom, 16-bathroom mansion, according to media reports. The high-end, 18,671 squarefoot estate is set on 7.4 acres of land with a pool and is secluded on a private, gated street. The seller, Russian businessman Sergey Grishin, acquired the estate in 2009 for $25.3 million and reportedly had been attempting to sell it many times in recent years. The home was put on the market in May of 2015 for $34.5 million and was relisted in 2017,
2018 and 2019. The Mediterranean-style main house includes a library, gym, separate wet and dry saunas, an elevator, arcade, game room and home theater. The detached guest house features two bedrooms and bathrooms. The royal couple aims for more privacy to raise their 1-year-old son, Archie, after they had to deal with drones capturing photos of him playing at Tyler Perry’s house. Being the first home the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have owned together, the mansion was a product of careful research and decision-making. They are reported to be enjoying complete privacy, and hope to give Archie the chance to play with other children his age.

“Can you imagine saying ‘Saint Robert E. Lee’ or ‘Saint Ulysses S. Grant?’ “The process of canonization is rigorous and demanding, sometimes taking hundreds of years to complete. It is, at best, irreverent and at worst offensive to the Catholic faith to apply this designation so inappropriately, Mr. Rodriguez wrote. In conclusion, Mr. Rodriguez stated that the project is in agreement with Mr. Graffy that future generations should embrace history as part of the community’s legacy. “Let us choose to honor a woman who fought for social justice her whole life rather than a man who fought in a 10- to 15minute battle and then lost the war, he wrote. In the interview with the NewsPress, Mr. Graffy spoke to the concept of removing historic statues and renaming streets with a historian’s viewpoint. “We are sitting here in our 21stcentury comfy chairs with our bottle of Pinot and judging these people from a bygone era and the accomplishments that they had and the respect that they had from the people at that time, he said. “We’re just saying, ‘Whatever you guys thought, our guys are better.’ So if we start renaming things, what is to stop the next generation from coming up and saying, ‘Who cares about whoever this person was? Steve Jobs gave us the cell phone. Let’s rename the Dolores Huerta street to Steve Jobs Street.’ below 5,000 feet are expected to experience temperatures ranging from 97 to 108 degrees, while conditions in the Cuyama Valley may reach up to 111 degrees, said Joe Sirard, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. Also expected to receive significant heat this weekend is the Santa Ynez Valley, with highs between 92 and 104 degrees. The Santa Ynez Valley has been designated with a heat advisory, a lesser cautionary status than an excessive heat warning, Mr. Sirard said. The city of Santa Barbara hasn’t received any advisories or warnings and is expected to reach a high temperature of 92 degrees today. Mr. Sirard said Saturday will likely be the hottest day of the heatwave, reaching a high of 94 degrees in the city. Conditions on Sunday and Monday are expected to be “very slightly cooler, but still very hot, Mr.

Neal Graffy is a Santa Barbara historian who wrote a book titled “Street Names of Santa Barbaraâ€? that tells the story behind each of the 52 original street names. He said he supports honoring Dolores Huerta, but not at the expense of AndrĂŠs Pico’s history.
to honor those people. “I think it’s sad that we cast judgment on these people from a bygone era who can’t defend themselves. They’re long dead and the people that supported them are long dead, Mr. Graffy said. “Judging people with 21stcentury morality is not always the answer. I think you really need to understand what these people came from and what the people of the time thought. The historian has lived in Santa Barbara since he was 9 years old in the year 1961. He wrote a book
titled “Street Names of Santa Barbara that details the stories and history behind each of the original 52 street names of the city. Mr. Graffy said he supports honoring Dolores Huerta, and encourages planting a community garden named after her, as “something that gives to the people instead of taking away from history. “I don’t think they should rename anything, he said. “I think that when people are wanting to honor somebody, they should find a way that does not
Sirard said. The high temperature for both days is 89 degrees, according to the Weather Service. The excessive heat warnings may be extended into next week, Mr. Sirard added. “There’s a possibility that the excessive heat warning could be extended into Tuesday for the interior parts of Santa Barbara County, Mr. Sirard said. Throughout the heatwave, the Santa Barbara Municipal Airport will be far cooler than the city, with highs reaching the low to mid 80s. Over the weekend, Mr. Sirard recommends local residents “use common sense and protect themselves from the hot weather. “What we tell folks to do is drink plenty of fluids because they want to be hydrated, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, and try to stay out of the sun as much as possible, he said. email: jgrega@newspress.com

Public opposition to logging project reaches 10,000 comments By BRIAN MACKLEY NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT
Community members primarily from Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties have submitted more than 10,000 public comments regarding the U.S. Forest Service’s logging proposal along the six-mile ridge known as Pine Mountain in the backcountry of Ventura County. With the deadline for public comment today, opposition for the project has been building as environmentalists say the project has received more comments than any single previously proposed project in the Los Padres National Forest. According to a group of local forest advocates known as Los Padres ForestWatch, concerns about the project include a lack of an appropriate environmental study, disturbance of cultural sites
and damage to recreational areas, an increase in wildfire risks and the chance the project would be conducted by a commercial logging company. Local tribal groups, elected representatives and more than 30 businesses in the area have chimed in on the project. “Our primary concern is the project’s lack of attention and near total insensitivity to the potential impact to Chumash cultural values and resources, Julie TumamaitStenslie, chair of the Barbareno/ Ventura Band of Mission Indians, said in a statement. Equivalent to the size of 575 American football fields, environmental groups claim the Forest Service intends to fast-track the new proposed project deep in the Ventura backcountry by citing it as “forest health and fuels reduction. According to the LPFW,
vegetation removal projects like Pine Mountain can increase wildfire risk by removing fireresistant trees, increasing heating and drying of the forest floor, and spreading non-native invasive grasses and weeds that ignite more easily and spread wildfire more quickly. “I understand, the U.S. Forest Service’s own assessment of potential and existing fuel breaks in the southern Los Padres National Forest ranks this project as 118 out of 163 in terms of priority, Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Ventura, of California’s 26th Congressional District, said in a statement. “Given the project’s low priority, it is unclear to me why this project has been selected to bypass complete environmental analysis. Nearly 70 environmental and social justice organizations have signed a separate letter to challenge the U.S. Forest Service’s
actions surrounding the project. Environmental advocates said more than one-third of the project area is protected by the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act, which was approved by the House in February. The bill has yet to be approved by the Senate and is expected to be included in the National Defense Authorization Act which will go to conference committees in the coming weeks. “Much of the project area is in its natural state, evolved over time without the disturbance of heavy modern machinery. Once trees are cut and the landscape is scarred by a project like this, the wilderness quality of the place is ruined, said ForestWatch advocacy director Rebecca August. “We hope that those who have not yet spoken make their voices heard before it’s too late. email: bmackley@newspress.com

‘All in a Garden Green’ Westmont professor writes adventure novel for young adult By MARILYN MCMAHON NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

usic can bring people together across borders, religion and even time. Dr. Paul J. Willis, professor of English at Westmont College in Montecito, explores this idea in his newly published young adult novel, “All in a Garden Green” (Slant Books, 2020). His experience teaching at Hengrave Hall in England (the home of the Westmont-in-England semester for 20 years) inspired him to depart from his usual nature writing and pen a story set in the 16th-century manor house presided over by a group of nuns. While exploring the house with her new friend Pedro, 13-yearold Erica Pickins walks through a chamber door into the year 1578. There, she finds a music master who mistakes her for Margaret, the elder daughter of the house who is late for a lesson on the virginal, a forerunner of the piano. It seems in a matter of days, Queen Elizabeth I will arrive on a formal visit, and the girl is to play for her. Erica pretends that she is Margaret and manages to pull off her final performance but not before the real Margaret reappears at exactly the wrong moment. The author said he got the idea for the book years ago when he and his wife, Sharon, took a group of college students for a fall semester of study at Hengrave Hall.
“Our children, who were then 5 and 7, were with us, and I always wondered afterward what the visit was like for them. So I did some research about the place and found that it had a distinctive musical history, and I also learned some interesting things about the visit of Queen Elizabeth in 1578. So 1578 became the date to which the children in the story go back in time,” said Dr. Willis. The book’s title, “All in a Garden Green,” is the name of a song that Erica plays on the piano and the virginal. It was popular in the court of Henry VIII and was still popular in the court of his daughter Elizabeth. As his first book for young adult readers, Dr. Willis hopes that it will prove to be an adventure for them. “I can’t predict where that adventure will take them in their imagination. That said, I do have to admit that insofar as the story dips into the deep sense of conflict between Catholics and Protestants in 16th-century England, I do want to educate young readers about what that might have been like — and to warn them away from taking part in that kind of conflict as they get older. By the end of the story, the power of music becomes an almost magical way in which this conflict (at least for the moment) is resolved. I suppose I want to provide some hope that our differences, however intractable, can be transcended.” Dr. Willis is also the author of four eco-fantasy novels in one big book, “The Alpine Tales.” The novels are set in a mythic version of the Cascade Range in the Pacific Northwest and are “full of climbing, hiking, skiing, caving and river-running adventures, not to mention a few talking marmots.” This book is different from the others in how at least a part of it
got written, according to Dr. Willis. “The climactic chapters came all in a rush in a single night. I had spent the day in a very sad way, helping a friend who had just been divorced move some of his stuff out of his house. That evening I felt emotionally exhausted. “After dinner, I sat down to revise a few pages of what I had written thus far, but then, unexpectedly, I kept going. And going. “It was as if the story was being told to me, and my job was to just keep up. When I got to the end of the significant action, and Erica had come back to her own time, I looked up and found the sun was coming through the window, and my wife and kids were having breakfast. Some writers experience this sort of thing all the time, but I am usually more of a plodder.” The author, who has published six collections of poetry and two collections of essays, has already drafted a sequel to “All in a Garden Green” in which Erica’s little brother, Walter, goes back in time to visit a pioneer community in the wilds of California. “Of course, he gets himself in trouble, so Erica has to go back in time herself again to help him out,” said Dr. Willis. “The story takes place in a wilderness area behind my home in Santa Barbara, so this puts me back on familiar ground.” email: mmcmahon@newspress.com

ocated just south of Buellton, the large “Pork Palace sign with the cartoon logo of the crowned hog peering outside of his castle is clearly visible in either direction on Highway 101. Established in 1975, this ranch is one of the more recent additions to our weekly certified farmers markets, offering its incredible line of meats derived from farm-raised heritage breed of hogs, as well as Boer goats. Limited beef is also available. The quality of the ranch’s product is exceptional, with a unique offering of pork sausages (the chorizo as well as the apple are my favorites), chops, belly and pretty much every other cut you may be in the market for. This week, for the first time, I grabbed a package of their deli sliced smoked ham, and I must say, it was a huge hit with the family. It delivers a smoky, salty and rich flavor. I likely won’t be purchasing that standard deli meat from the grocery store any time soon.
Once I was home, it didn’t take very long for my family to devour the package. My kids stacked a hearty pile atop those deliciously sweet Hawaiian rolls, with a little extra rolled up and served on the side. My wife, who rarely goes a day without eating some sort of salad, diced it up and used it to top her mixed greens, along with heirloom tomatoes, sliced cucumber, red onion and Drake Farms garlic and herb chevre. For myself, I immediately ate a couple large rounds right out of the package. And the rest, I diced and worked into a breakfast stuffed poblano chili pepper dish. Loaded with eggs, cheese and Pork Palace ham, then topped with avocado and homemade salsa, this really hit the spot and is a great way to start the day. Fix of the Week
We see them three or four times a week, and we are very fond of our nephew. I love being an uncle, and my wife loves being an aunt. My sister-in-law grew up calling all her parents’ friends “Aunt Sally, “Aunt Jenna and so on. Naturally, she plans to have my nephew call her friends “aunt and “uncle as well. I feel that being an aunt or uncle is much more than just a title. We are family; we are blood. I’m a bit put off when I hear my sister-in-law say, “Here’s Uncle John, when they see “John only a couple of times a year. He’s not an uncle to my nephew! Should I be offended, or is it just a title like saying “Mr.? — Real Uncle in Maryland Dear Real Uncle: Simmer down. Your SIL is using the term as an honorary title. As you stated, she does this because it’s the way she was raised. In no way does it diminish either your emotional or blood tie with your nephew.

ARIES — You may feel like you’re being tested in some way and must prove that what you’re doing is valid and correct, Aries. Fortunately, you should feel an emotional boost that will help you be confident about who you are, regardless of what other people think. The biggest tests are those that you give yourself. You are your toughest critic. Take concerted steps to go easier on yourself. TAURUS — You’re able to assert yourself with more confidence than usual, Taurus. You should have a grounded perspective regarding your emotions. You aren’t afraid to speak your mind in a situation where normally you’d only say anything that helps keep the peace. Other people may prefer that you keep things on an even keel, but you aren’t working for them. You’re working for yourself. GEMINI — Just when you feel like you’ve come to a point of emotional stability and calm, Gemini, something happens to throw you off balance. You may be uneasy with the notion of stability and feel what you really want is risk, action, and excitement. This inner conflict makes it hard for you to operate. Try not to overanalyze every piece of the equation. The solution will come to you. CANCER — You have lots of energy and self-confidence, Cancer. That’s wonderful, but it may also put you at greater risk for dangerous experiences and accidents. You could find that you’re much more aggressive, especially if someone crosses you. An emotional irritation could manifest in physical ways like reckless driving or arguments with people who don’t deserve your anger. LEO — Be happy with yourself and others, Leo. Stop trying to find fault with everyone you interact with. By criticizing what they do and how they do it, you could wake up one morning and find that you have no friends. By only seeing the bad in people, you may talk yourself out of relationships with them. Be careful about coming across as a know-it-all. It isn’t your job to dictate or judge. VIRGO — You may be bursting with energy and yearning to be a free spirit, Virgo. At the same time, your emotions could find a way to block these thoughts. You may feel like there’s some sort of weight holding you down, making it difficult to act freely. This could cause you to act fitfully, leaving you frustrated and defeated. Calm +*#!2 +1$)"$ down and take things one step at a
time. LIBRA —You may feel a bit blue due to a nagging weightiness that pins you down to reality instead of being free to fly, Libra. You may act out in an effort to prove to yourself and others that you’re somehow above Earthly things. Get over the mental block that says being grounded is a bad thing. Plant your feet firmly on terra firma. That’s how you find balance and attain your goals. SCORPIO — You’re able to work much more efficiently and effectively, Scorpio. Your energy is strong, and you don’t need to fight in order to get your voice heard. Attend to details and don’t get discouraged by any discomfort that might arise. As long as you approach things with a positive attitude, everything should work out fine. You shouldn’t have to put in any special effort to be successful. SAGITTARIUS — Different people measure success by different scales. You shouldn’t get discouraged if your accomplishment today seems small compared to what others have done in the same period. Comparisons will make it difficult for you to feel like you’re getting anywhere. Someone else will always do more. Be content with what you do today, even if it’s something simple. CAPRICORN — You could feel as if the battle has begun and you’re the target, Capricorn. If you don’t have a solid force behind you, this period could be difficult. Emotionally, this may not be your best day. Instead of feeling your feelings, you examine them in a methodical, rational manner. It may seem like you’re dealing with them when you’re really trying to talk yourself out of feeling them at all. AQUARIUS — It could be scary for you to do anything risky for fear of conflict or failure, Aquarius. Perhaps you’ve tried to become invisible in different situations so you can avoid being noticed. These defense mechanisms may serve you for a while but acting out of fear or guilt won’t get you where you need to go. To achieve what you want, you must act with confidence, love, and faith. PISCES — This is a terrific time to start some physical activity that takes you outside and gets your blood pumping, Pisces. Don’t think this means you have to become the star player at a tennis club. A simple walk around the block every morning may be all you need to feel a boost in physical and mental energy. Also note the clarity of mind that comes when you get your body moving.

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

Adverse Childhood Experiences receives grant
Chumash foundation donates $100,000 to schools The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Foundation is donating $100,000 to 12 Santa Ynez Valley schools. According to Thursday’s news release, the funds will help address unforeseen costs caused by COVID19 restrictions. The amounts given to each school will be announced in a few weeks. “We felt this was an opportunity to give our schools some assistance as they navigate distance learning and continue to provide a proper education for local youth, Kenneth Kahn, tribal chairman for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, said in a statement. “The schools in our community have different needs, so we’re hoping these funds will help ease the burden and provide access to the resources they need to operate a virtual classroom. Known for a long tradition of giving back to the community, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians has donated more than $25 million to hundreds of groups, organizations and schools around the country. For more information contact Veronica Sandoval, director of public relations and the Chumash Foundation, at vsandoval@ sychumashfoundation.org or 805688-7997 or visit santaynezchumash. org. — Brian Mackley

Pediatric Resiliency Collaborative and KIDS Network of Santa Barbara County received $350,000 in grant funds to take part in the state’s Adverse Childhood Experiences Aware initiative. ACEs are defined as stressful or traumatic experiences that occur before the age of 18, such as abuse, neglect, substance abuse, divorce, or domestic violence. The funds, provided by the Office of the California Surgeon General and the Department of Health Care Services, are given to organizations that design and implement training and education activities for providers
and organizations that serve Medi-Cal beneficiaries. The initiative’s goal is to change and save lives by helping Medi-Cal providers understand the importance of screening for ACEs and train them to respond with trauma-informed care. Throughout California, a total of $14.3 million was awarded to 100 organizations. PeRC works to implement universal ACEs screening throughout Santa Barbara County and train 75% of pediatricians and their clinic staff and 25% of pediatric providers in neighboring counties.
The training will be offered free of charge to Medi-Cal and other providers, and will be offered online and promoted for use throughout the state. The PeRC was formed by Cottage Health and other local organizations. It received an ACEs Aware training grant for $200,000. PeRC’s partners include Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, Carpinteria Children’s Project, CenCal Health and many others. KIDS Network received $150,000 from the ACEs Aware Provider Engagement Grant. — Grayce McCormick

NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER
The young Goleta boy would ride his bike to the convenience store on Encina Road every chance he got, but not just for the snacks. Little Ben Howland also wanted to talk basketball with the teenage clerk. “I met Jay Hillock when I was 7, hanging out at the 7-Eleven store where he used to work,â€? said Howland, who has since guided four different schools to the NCAA Tournament. That meeting of the young minds resulted in two of the most respected careers in basketball. Howland won national coach of the year honors at Pittsburgh in 2002 and again at UCLA in 2006 when he took the Bruins to the first of three straight Final Fours. He had just guided Mississippi State to its first NCAA Tournament in a decade when Hillock, now 71, called it quits last year after his own 42 seasons in the sport. Hillock spent 17 of those seasons as a collegiate coach and 25 in the NBA. That included a dozen years as Director of Pro Personnel for the Chicago Bulls and then two more as a scout before he settled down for good at his Ventura home with wife Cindy. His lofty ascent in the game of basketball came as no surprise to those who knew him during the 1960s as Goleta’s King Gym Rat. He was the first of four Goleta Boys Club members to become NCAA Division I coaches, with Howland, Larry Lessett (Maryland-Eastern Shore) and Shantay Legans (Eastern Washington) following in his footsteps. “I met Jay when he was 15 or 16‌ He was friends with my brother Greg,â€? said Sal Rodriguez, another Boys Clubber who became its long-time director. “He knew basketball and he wanted to learn more.â€? That was evident even when Hillock was on the bench as a senior during San Marcos High’s run to the CIF semifinals in 1967. “I made it a point to sit next to Jay to listen to him wax poetic about what was going on the floor — match-ups, who should be substituted, what kind of offense should we run,â€? said teammate Laird Hayes, who would continue on to a long career as an NFL referee. “Jay was a basketball savant. He saw things on the court that I never saw.â€? Classmate Jeff Nelson, the star of those 25-4 Royals who would become a two-sport athlete at Cal Poly, saw “both passion and smartsâ€? in his San Marcos teammate. “We called him Pops as he seemed like a middle-aged, Midwestern basketball coach in high school,â€? Nelson said. Hillock was actually born in Hoosier country. He moved from Indiana to California at age 12 when General Motors transferred his father to Goleta’s Delco Electronics. His parents, Jesse and Ann, became major figures on the Santa Barbara tennis scene. Jay, the eldest of their five children, was more set on a life in basketball. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Gonzaga University and his master’s at Cal Poly in 1975 before volunteering to help Santa Barbara City College’s new coach, Ed De Lacy. Howland’s family had moved to Cerritos when he was a sophomore in high school, but Hillock recruited him right back to Santa Barbara to play for the Vaqueros. Within the next three years, they became the top-ranked community college team in California. “We went 33-2, and 10 of us from that team went on to play at fouryear schools,â€? said Rich Alvari,

Above, Jay Hillock, who was John Stockton’s head basketball coach at Gonzaga, helped induct the former NBA star into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. Attending the event in Kansas City were, from left, former assistant coach Bruce Wilson, Hillock, Stockton, and former assistant coach Rich Alvari. At left, Mr. Hillock shows his passion while coaching basketball at Gonzaga University during the 1980s.
another former San Marcos star who played at SBCC from 1977-79. “Jay and Ed had a lot to do with that. The late Dan Fitzgerald, Gonzaga’s coach and athletic director at the time, brought Hillock back to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 1979. He’d seen enough within two years, promoting him to be his successor. At age 32, the Goleta gym rat had become one of the youngest head coaches in Division I basketball. The Zags, who now rein among the college basketball elite, were a bare-bones program in those days with a recruiting budget of just $7,500. They toured California’s high school gyms in an old, battered car that they warehoused in San Francisco. They’d even sleep in it when they ran out of hotel money. Fitzgerald knew he needed a work horse to take over his program. “The Hillocks did a lot of good things raising their kids, he once said. “But more than anything else, they taught them to work. John Stockton, Hillock’s star player and a future NBA Hall of Famer, remembers the young coach doing much of the grunt work around Gonzaga’s old gym. “Jay and our trainer, Steve, would get out the scrapers and redo our floor every year, he said. “They’d varnish it themselves. He brought another hardworking Hillock — his younger brother Joe — onto his staff. Joe spent a dozen years at Gonzaga and is still coaching basketball at a high school in Utah. “Joe and Jay came hand-inhand, Stockton recalled. “You talk about basketball rats, if those two weren’t in the gym, they’d be together looking at game film. Hillock also hired Howland — the kid who liked to talk basketball over Slurpees — to be his first graduate assistant. He brought Alvari into the same position a few years later. He had a vital assignment for Howland after his backup point guard left school, asking him to match up against Stockton in
practice. “I fouled him a lot, said Howland, who had been Weber State’s top defensive player just two seasons earlier. “He probably thought I was a jerk. Stockton thought nothing of the kind. “He was very physical and very verbal, but it wasn’t unpleasant, he recalled. “He made things hard but also rewarding for me. Hillock took the same approach with the future Utah Jazz star. “Jay was very high-energy and a speedy talker, Stockton said. “I remember once when he was trying to get my attention, he had both hands on my cheeks and was slapping them. I can’t remember the lesson he was trying to teach, but he wanted to make sure I heard it. “I appreciate that in a guy — someone who cares about the game and is as involved in it as much as you are. Gonzaga posted a 60-50 record during Hillock’s four seasons as head coach. They even upset DePaul in Chicago when Ray Meyer had the Blue Demons ranked among the nation’s top teams. But a rash of injuries kept the Zags from continuing on to the NCAA Tournament. “I thought we had a great chance my senior year, but literally everybody except me in that senior class got hurt, Stockton pointed out. The frustrations, Hillock admitted, were difficult to handle. He stepped down after the Zags, who had started the 1984-85 season with a 13-5 record, finished at just 15-13. “I have a lot of positive feelings toward Gonzaga, he said. “I just caught myself in a situation where I was so down, I didn’t know if I wanted to coach again. But that changed after Hillock was recruited to be the top assistant at Loyola Marymount. He played a key role in the Lions’ 1990 run to the NCAA Elite Eight, implementing the man-to-man press that complemented coach Paul Westhead’s run-and-gun offense.
“We started from scratch,â€? Westhead said. “He was an extremely knowledgeable basketball person who I relied on. What I learned later was (that) he’s extremely reliable.â€? Hillock took over the program when Westhead and the team’s top players moved on. He was fired after posting a win-loss record of 31-28 over two seasons “We couldn’t sustain it,â€? Hillock admitted, “but Loyola never knew what it wanted to be.â€? But he still knew what he was meant to be: that basketball savant that Laird Hayes had once identified in 1967. The Utah Jazz hired Hillock as a scout in 1994, beginning a quartercentury odyssey in the NBA that included stops in Washington and Vancouver. Scott Layden, then the general manager of the New York Knicks, eventually lured him to Madison Square Garden in 2002 to be his Director of Pro Personnel. “What always strikes me about Jay is how incredibly humble and modest he is, especially considering what he’s accomplished in the game of basketball,â€? Layden said. “He has always been dedicated to the profession, as a student and teacher of the game. “His excitement and passion for coaching and scouting isn’t just obvious, it’s contagious. He reminds me why we are all so lucky to do what we do. “His greatest quality by far, though, is his loyalty, which makes him a winning coach, a stellar scout and the best friend I know.â€? That never wavered, whether he was tending counter at a 7-Eleven or taking his final tour of duty with the Chicago Bulls. “Jay had a great career,â€? Howland said. “He was highly regarded and so well-liked in the league. “As for me, I’ll be forever indebted to him for getting me into basketball coaching‌ and for being such a phenomenal person and friend.â€? email: mpatton@newspress.com
NCAA cancels December’s College Cup at UCSB By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER
The NCAA officially removed the College Cup from UCSB’s athletic calendar on Thursday. NCAA president Mark Emmert announced that, “We cannot, at this point, have fall championships because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Final Four for men’s soccer, which was previously held at UCSB’s 16,000-seat stadium in 2010 and 2018, was set to make a third return on Dec. 11 and 13. UCSB athletic director John McCutcheon said he had already notified the NCAA that his university would be incapable
of holding the event, especially with the coronavirus protocol that would have been required. “We’ve had several calls with them leading up to this, he said. “When our fall season got canceled by our conference, we told them that it would be extremely difficult for us to host. “We called them again last week and had a conversation in which we said that we just can’t do it. Although men’s soccer and other fall sports could still be played next spring, McCutcheon said UCSB still would be hardpressed to host the College Cup. “It’s a different situation for us in the spring, depending on what the timing is, he said. “If all of
our fall sports are playing in the spring, our staff would be spread out too thin. I can’t envision handling all that and still hosting the championships. He expects the NCAA to make a quick decision about moving fall sports to the spring or simply canceling seasons altogether. “I think there’s going to be unbelievable pressure put on them to come up with a format soon, McCutcheon said. He’s against conducting a season that consists of just a handful of games. “You can’t ask an athlete to burn a season of eligibility if there’s not a significant season, he said. “We first have to see what
the championship format would be and then what the conference is planning. Given that, we can figure out what we can do to make it a meaningful experience. McCutcheon is unsure when UCSB’s student-athletes will be allowed back on campus. “There are a lot of moving parts to that, he said. “What do we need to do to comply with the guidelines set by the NCAA, and by the state, and by the county? What are the requirements in regards to access to facilities? “It’s not an easy process to go through. I foresee a phased-in process in which we don’t bring all 500 athletes back at once. email: mpatton@newspress.com
