‘Building meaningful relationships’ Bristol Farms opens its doors in Santa Barbara By JORGE MERCADO NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

A new grocery chain opened its doors to local residents on Thursday and it was met with a great reception to start. Bristol Farms opened its 14th storefront in California during Thursday’s soft opening of its newest location, at 3855 State St. in La Cumbre Plaza. Aptly named Bristol Farms La Cumbre, the store features an open design, perfect for social distancing, and offers a variety of goods to its newest customer base. “We know the community has been waiting for our arrival and we are excited to share everything that makes Bristol Farms a shopping experience unlike any other,” Denis Lacey, the store’s director, told the News-Press in an email.

The store wanted to avoid long lines of customers in order to adhere to social distancing protocols, Mr. Lacey said. That did not stop locals from being excited, however, once the store was open. “We didn’t want big lines of people queuing up outside, but it turns out most folks knew about it through word of mouth. There definitely was energy in the air today, as people were able to take their time and explore our departments. We had plenty of staff on hand to answer questions and give recommendations. It really was fantastic,” Mr. Lacey said. Please see bristol on A2

The combined smoke of many wildfires burning through California has made its way to Santa Barbara County, leading the county Air Pollution Control District to issue a local air quality warning. According to APCD public information officer Lyz Hoffman, much of the smoke that has blown into Santa Barbara County originates in Monterey County, where the River and Carmel fires are currently burning. Local air quality could remain impacted for the next several days, and Ms. Hoffman told the News-Press that the APCD will be monitoring conditions this weekend to determine whether the warning will continue. As long as the air quality remains impacted by the smoke, Ms. Hoffman recommended Santa Barbara County residents check the APCD website for hourly air condition reports, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and stay indoors as much as possible. Staying indoors is most important for those who suffer from heart or respiratory conditions, older adults, pregnant women and children. Santa Barbara County Public

Despite little promotion leading up to Bristol Farms’ opening, there was a steady stream of guests all day, all excited to test out the new store. Store director Denis Lacey, a Santa Barbara native, said the store was looking forward to building a meaningful relationship in the local community.

Smoke from multiple wildfires has blown down to Santa Barbara County over the last couple of days, as seen in this smokey view from State Route 154 Thursday morning.

During a surprise reveal Thursday at BrightStar Care Santa Barbara’s office, local caregiver Rafael Benavides was awarded the regional West Caregiver of the Year award. Nominated by his client’s spouse for making a significant difference in his client’s life, Mr. Benavides was selected out of hundreds of nominees for the award. It marks the first time in eight years that a caregiver from California won the prestigious award. Originally from Chile, Mr. Benavides told the News-Press his style of care focuses on going further than just providing

the basic medical care that is required. He is always willing to stay an extra few minutes to ensure his patient isn’t just healthy, but also happy and laughing before he leaves. After taking on his new patient who had several previous caregivers, Mr. Benavides said he worked diligently to gain her trust. “It was very difficult, it was very difficult. But I think the most important thing is that you need the trust,” Mr. Benavides said. “She has her ups and downs but I am very happy.” Once he finally did gain his patients’ trust, he said he has now been able to give her more independence than she Please see CAREGIVER on A2

Prince Harry and Mrs. Markle discussed the world their 1-yearold son, Archie, will inherit, and how society can come together and end the negativity and hate circulating online. “It’s on all of us collectively to make the world a better place ‌ and we are,â€? Prince Harry said. Mrs. Markle mentioned the

impact the global pandemic has had on the online landscape. “Everyone’s mental and emotional well-being are perhaps more fragile than ever before, certainly with COVID and our dependability on devices right now in the absence of human interaction, the Duchess said on the virtual call. “People are going online more than ever before to feel community. The royal couple moved last month into a mansion in Montecito with nine bedrooms and 16 bathrooms. They were reportedly looking for a more private home for their son to make friends and lead a normal life.

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County prepares for Public Safety Power Shutoffs by loading up with generators and freezer storage. The food bank is determined to be able to provide healthy food for community members whose food may spoil during an outage.

By GRAYCE MCCORMICK NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT

As the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County navigates the challenges of food insecurity during the coronavirus pandemic, it’s been presented with another challenge: power shutoffs. However, it is prepared for the challenge, fully equipped with generators and determined to ensure healthy food availability for the community. Public Safety Power Shutoffs are initiated when high temperatures, extreme dryness and record-high winds create extreme vulnerability to wildfires. As the county experiences world record heat temperatures, and with more than 350 wildfires and nearly 11,000 lightning strikes, preparations are being made for shutoffs as wildfire smoke billows through the air, according to Gov. Gavin Newsome. “The situation is a real challenge for people. We feel like we’ve dealt with the pandemic and food insecurity, so it’s challenging for people to think about fire season, Erik Talkin, CEO of the food bank, told the News-Press. “But because of the large number of fires, it’s significant, so we’ve been trying to educate both our agencies and members of the public about things they can do. The food bank sent out a PSPS fact sheet to provide safety tips during the outages. It advises to keep freezers and refrigerators closed, only use generators outdoors and away from windows, not cook indoors with propane or use a gas stove, disconnect appliances and electronics and more. The food bank also informed community members that it will continue to operate all regularly scheduled food distributions. The food bank has backup generators at both warehouses and keeps all trucks, including refrigerated trucks, fully fueled to transport food to distribution sites and as additional refrigerated storage if needed. “We planned for this for quite a while, Mr. Talkin continued. “We’re always here and ready with fresh food if the community members get stuck with spoiled food. The food bank has 55 locations across the county that are open to anyone, and no paperwork is required, according to the CEO. The food bank is also providing replacement benefits to cover the loss of food for CalFresh recipients who lose food as a result of the outages. To request a replacement, recipients must complete, sign and turn in form CF303, include a short description of the food loss, include date and time of the shutoff and call their local county office within 10 days of food spoilage. “Typically, lower-income people don’t have larger storages of food, Mr. Talkin said. “They can’t afford to stock up on lots of items, so often food insecurity can impact them quickly after an event like this. We just want to help those people during this time.

KT Tunstall at Lobero Singer-songwriter makes her debut at SB theater with pay-per-view concert event

Singer-songwriter KT Tunstall will perform the Lobero Theatre for the first time on Saturday in the pay-per-view event “Live from the Lobero with KT Tunstall.”

Words to live by

nown for her energetic live performances and powerful contralto voice, Grammynominated singer-songwriter KT Tunstall is giving her first performance at the Lobero Theatre in a far different way than she initially planned. Originally, she was scheduled to play the Santa Barbara venue in January but had to withdraw from performing when she suddenly became ill. The Lobero chose Oct. 1 as the concert’s rescheduled date, but then came COVID19, wiping out concerts for the remainder of the year and pushing the performance date all the way to April 22, 2021. While performing at the venue before a live audience may have to wait until next year, Ms. Tunstall will make her debut at the Lobero at noon Saturday with an online pay-per-view event: “Live from the Lobero with KT Tunstall.” At the start of the year, she would have found it hard to believe that her first Lobero concert would be via live streaming with no live audience. But Ms. Tunstall jumped at the opportunity when the venue approached her about doing it. Like just about all who perform live music for a living, Ms. Tunstall said being relegated to playing music online is frustrating, since more often than not “it looks crap and it sounds crap.” “Live from the Lobero’’ stood out as a chance to perform online in high quality. “I was really hungry for some opportunities to do this in a really high quality, experiential way that makes people feel that they’re having a night out,” she told the News-Press this week. Ms. Tunstall’s will be the second pay-per-view concert the venue

has done since the pandemic began. Once live performances were canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus, Lobero Theatre Foundation executive director David Asbell met with producer and director Byl Carruthers about setting up pay-per-view events for the venue to make money while it can’t hold live events. On June 28, famed Montecito singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins played the Lobero’s first payper-view show with a few of his bandmates. This was a bit of a deviation from Mr. Asbell and Mr. Carruthers’ original concept of an artist performing solo, but the “Footloose” singer insisted on having a few musicians join him so he could perform whatever songs he wanted. Ms. Tunstall’s performance, on the other hand, will be in the original spirit of “Live from the Lobero.” “KT’s concert, we’re excited about because it’s in line with our original concept, and it’s really awesome to be able, on our second one, to have someone come out and take on the artistic challenge of doing a solo performance,” Mr. Carruthers said. Ms. Tunstall is no stranger to performing solo. Her concerts frequently feature sections where she takes the stage alone with an acoustic guitar, lays down rhythms with percussion instruments, and generates sound effects by pounding the body of her guitar and clapping her hands. She loops these sounds using pedals so they repeat as she tears into renditions of songs like “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” and “Suddenly I See.” She told the News-Press this method of playing solo is rewarding for both her and her audience. “There’s something extremely

empowering about playing solo, and I think it sort of delights audiences because often they haven’t seen someone do a onewoman show before,” she said. That said, she does love having the company of her bandmates. “I wouldn’t want to choose between the two, because playing solo is a very intimate affair, but rocking out with a band, there’s nothing like it,” she said. When she takes the stage at the Lobero on Saturday, Ms. Tunstall will play a similar set list to that she would have played had she been able to perform in January. Mixing songs from her back catalogue with a cover tune and “a few mashups,” the set will feature a considerable number of songs from “Wax,” her sixth and latest studio album released in 2018. For Ms. Tunstall, her favorite songs to play are her latest material, and her favorite of the bunch is the physically demanding funk of “In This Body.” “I love to play songs that make me sweat,” she said. She also highlighted the album’s opening riff rocker “Little Red Thread” as “a really poignant song for this time,” with lyrics about being connected to one another. “Wax” is the second in a trilogy

FYI “Live from the Lobero with KT Tunstall” will begin at noon Saturday. Tickets for the pay-per-view event can be bought online at lobero.org. Costs begin at $15.

of albums dedicated to “soul, body, and mind,” a trilogy that started with “Kin” in 2016. With the soul and body records finished, Ms. Tunstall is currently at work on the trilogy’s final album dedicated to mind. Just as the heavier rock-and-roll feel of “Wax” differs greatly from the laid-back acoustic stylings of “Kin,” the trilogy’s currently untitled third record will differ greatly from its two predecessors. According to Ms. Tunstall, producing a “cerebral” sounding album dedicated to the mind will likely involve string sections. “We’ve done a string session for one of the first songs, and I think strings are going to play a part in this next album,” she said. Not only is the next album shaping up to be musically different from her past output, but its creation has been a departure from her usual songwriting process. Whereas she usually works on music and lyrics simultaneously, the next record’s songs are currently fully formed

pieces of music missing lyrics. Ms. Tunstall also anticipates the lyrics of her upcoming album will be different from those of its predecessors, as they need to fit into a different unifying theme. Rather than feeling constrained by this limitation on her lyrics, the singer-songwriter welcomes it. Working within restrictions is an ethos that she brings to making music as a whole. “I’ve always believed limitation breeds creativity … In general, I don’t really enjoy working in really big, fancy studios,” she said. When 2020 started, Ms. Tunstall had around 200 live gigs planned including a tour with Hall & Oates, which has been delayed to next year. Reflecting on the scant opportunities for performing live amid the pandemic, Ms. Tunstall said that one silver lining is improved engagement with her fans. Being at home more has meant she’s had more time to connect online with fans through the website Patreon, and personally answer letters that fans write and send to her P.O. box in Topanga Canyon. “I feel like the hostess of a really great party and I offer some snacks and some booze and people really get on and have a great time,” she said. email: jgrega@newspress.com

HOROSCOPE

ARIES — Try not to lose sight of your own projects or desires, Aries. There’s a great deal of power and manipulative energy in the air today that could throw you off course if you aren’t careful. Have confidence in yourself and don’t back down if things get too confrontational. Take control of the car you’re driving instead of just coasting haphazardly down the hill. TAURUS — Recharge today by getting outside and stretching your arms to the sky, Taurus. Be proud and courageous. You have the power to turn an unhealthy situation into a positive one, but first you must get rid of all selfdoubt. If you don’t have confidence in yourself, it will be hard for others to have confidence in you. Make sure you let the world know exactly where you stand. GEMINI — Difficult predicaments could arise today if you try to exert your will over others without having the most honorable intentions, Gemini. It could be that you’re using someone else’s fear of you to control him or her. This doesn’t make for a healthy relationship. Try not to snap at others. Make allies, not enemies, and you’ll find that you will have nothing to fear. CANCER — The fire within you is raging today, Cancer, and you should be careful how you wield this power. Be proud and triumphant. Walk with your shoulders back and head high. Freedom is important, but make sure that others don’t interpret it as you not caring about a person or situation that’s actually quite meaningful to you. Let your heart speak openly and honestly. LEO — There may be a great deal of fuss over something that seems quite insignificant to you, Leo. Try to see the beauty and importance of everything around you. At the same time, make sure you give yourself enough credit for being the person you are. Egos are apt to go through a bit of a transformation that will affect the way you react to the outside world. VIRGO — Things are coming to a critical point for you today, Virgo, and you may find that other people openly object to your actions. It’s OK to be a bit selfish if the situation is appropriate. Look at yourself in the mirror and be proud of the person you see. Try not to get lost in the group or think that your personal success and +*#!2 +1$)"$ happiness depend on the success of others.

“Nobody ever drowned in his own sweat. — Ann Landers

LIBRA — Feel free to speak more loudly today, Libra. You’ll find that things fall into place more easily if you speak your thoughts outwardly and directly in the presence of others. Bring your internal power under your control instead of becoming a victim of the control games played by others. Your sincere heart is easily manipulated, so be careful that you aren’t getting the short end of the stick. SCORPIO — You should bask in a glorious splendor today, Scorpio. There’s a great deal of power at your disposal. You’ll find your ego is healthy, charged, and ready for the battlefield. Work lovingly with the energies that surround you. There’s a great deal of fire in the air that will aid your pursuit of happiness. Don’t settle for anything less than the best, because you’re worth it. SAGITTARIUS — Add more sunshine to your day, Sagittarius. It may be time to stir up your inner passion and let it speak with greater confidence than you have been lately. Make sure you heal yourself by letting the people around you hear your truth loud and clear. Don’t play games in order to please others. Stay true to yourself above all else. CAPRICORN — You’ll find that your spark can easily turn potential energy into kinetic energy, Capricorn. Don’t underestimate the power of your words. Realize the profound impact they have on others and take responsibility for their consequences. Try to use them sparingly if you can. Speak half as much as you normally would, but make each sentence resonate twice as powerfully. AQUARIUS — Don’t dwell on your fluctuating moods today, Aquarius. Look at the larger trends and how positive elements are coming together in your favor. Stay optimistic and remember that you were put here for a reason. Respect and honor your values by staying in tune with yourself and the world around you. There’s a profound power in your stillness, so cherish all moments of silence. PISCES — This is your day to shine in all your glory, Pisces. There’s no need to hold anything back. You’ll find that you have a great deal of love to share. Your heart is likely to go to extremes today in order to prove its love, passion, and affection. Make sure that this energy that’s so true to your core is appreciated and reciprocated by the people with whom you share it.

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

UCSB’s All-Decade Basketball Team is a constellation of stars By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

The stars were in alignment for UCSB basketball the last decade. Half of the school’s top-10 scoring list consists of Gauchos who graduated within the last eight years. It would’ve been six of the top 10 if injuries hadn’t cost Max Heidegger 24 games the last two seasons. Four of the nine Gauchos who made it to the NBA have also come during those last eight, great years. It makes the following five — UCSB’s newest All-Decade Team, listed with height and graduating year — a tough squad to make, indeed. CENTER — ALAN WILLIAMS 6-foot-8 (2015): He was nicknamed “Big Al” for his beefy frame, but those who knew him best called him “Big Sauce” for his spicy, free spirit. Williams developed into UCSB’s all-time leader in rebounds (1,125) and is second in scoring (1,732 points) to Orlando Johnson. He spent many nights sleeping on the couch of Johnson’s apartment during his freshman year, soaking up the senior’s words of wisdom. “He’d say, ‘You’re going to be the face of this program one day, so you’ve got to maintain that look of maturity,’” Williams said. “I listened to those seniors, even though I fought it at times, and everything they taught me is stuff that I’m going to use now for the rest of my life.” Williams, the Big West Conference Player of the Year in 2014, averaged a double-double in each of his last two years while leading the nation in rebounds both seasons. Sports Illustrated called him “The Beast of the Beach.” “He has the best hands of any big man I’ve ever seen and he catches everything,” coach Bob Williams said. “He’s got a nice, feathery shooting touch, and he’s got a great post-up body, too. “He’s obviously the best big man we’ve ever had. Whatever Al has worked at, he’s gotten better at.” He’s gotten good enough to play 67 games in parts of four NBA seasons with Phoenix and Brooklyn. FORWARD — JAMES NUNNALLY, 6-7 (2012): Johnson

At left, Orlando Johnson is mobbed by UCSB basketball fans after leading the Gauchos to the first of back-to-back, Big West Conference Tournament championships in 2010. At right, Alan Williams, seen huddling up his teammates, was the center of attention for UCSB basketball from 2011 to 2015. He and Orlando Johnson were the last two Gauchos to be named as Big West Players of the Year.

was redshirting at UCSB during the 2008-09 season when he watched Nunnally score 22 points as a freshman against eventual national champion North Carolina. “He’s going to be pretty good,” Johnson said at the time. He and Nunnally became the top one-two punch in school history when they combined for 1,194 points during their NCAA Tournament season of 2010-11. But Nunnally, who ranks fifth all-time at UCSB with 1,685 points, admitted to carrying “a big chip” on his shoulder for having been thrust into Johnson’s shadow. “I feel like I’m as good as anybody in the country,” he once said. “I feel like I deserve the respect, and I’m going to go get it.” That led to some bad chemistry late in the 2011 season. UCSB lost four of five games, prompting coach Williams to hold his own bonfire of the vanities. “Coach had us write down everything we hated about anybody on the team, or him, on a piece of paper, and we burned it in the trash,” Nunnally said. It resulted in a winning streak that took the Gauchos all the way to the NCAA Tournament. “He came out of that completely different, and he carried that into the Big West Tournament,” Williams said of Nunnally. “He became unselfish, making the extra pass. He became aggressive

defensively and in rebounding the ball.” Nunnally has played 28 games in parts of two NBA seasons with Atlanta, Philadelphia, Minnesota and Houston. He’s also been voted as the MVP of Italy’s top pro league. FORWARD — MICHAEL BRYSON, 6-5 (2016): He was one of the most prodigious jumpers in school history, finishing second in the NBA G-League’s Slam Dunk Contest in 2018. But he also could shoot. Bryson set a Gaucho record for career 3-pointers (241) that teammate Gabe Vincent surpassed two years later by just two threeballs. Bryson, who was twice named to the All-Big West First Team, ranks sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,620 points. But he also came to UCSB to study philosophy. He put it to good use after the Gauchos went just 1120 during his freshman year. “I wouldn’t ask for anything different,” the cerebral Gaucho said a few years later. “It definitely allowed us to grow and it created a hunger that was very important.” Bryson admitted that coach Williams could get annoyed by the arguments he posed. “I always have a reasoning or an explanation for something,” he said. “But I love it. I love philosophy. I came here and it

definitely opened my eyes and my mind to different perspectives, different mindsets, and the way to attack situations differently.” GUARD — ORLANDO JOHNSON, 6-5 (2012): He reigns as UCSB’s all-time leading scorer with 1,825 points despite having played his freshman year at Loyola Marymount. But his impact in leading the Gauchos to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments (2010 and 2011) for the first time in school history went way beyond statistics. Coach Williams described Johnson, the 2010 Big West Player of the Year, as the “big brother to the whole team.” “He likes to take care of people,” he explained. Johnson’s nurturing nature came from having been raised by his own two brothers. His mother was murdered when he was a toddler and his grandmother died when he was just 11. His brothers instilled a work ethic that sometimes got Johnson into trouble. He was once kicked out of practice when he tried to sneak into a drill despite being on the injured list. Johnson’s ownership of the team was legendary. “He just refused to let the team ever have a bad practice,” coach Williams said. “If we were having a down practice, he was the one

who changed that. He was the one who set the tone.” When Johnson told Thunderdome manager Donnell Dixon how badly he wanted to make it to the NBA, Dixon gave him a key to the arena door and said, “When they call your name in New York, and you get drafted in the NBA, you give me that key back.” Johnson did just that after being picked in the second round in 2012. He’s played 103 games in parts of three seasons with Indiana, Sacramento, Phoenix and New Orleans. GUARD — MAX HEIDEGGER, 6-3 (2020): He set a school record as a sophomore with 95 3-pointers while averaging 19.1 points per game. He earned his nickname of Mad Max, however, by how fearlessly he’d drive through the key. He became only the seventh Gaucho in history to make the All-Big West First Team multiple times after averaging 16.0 points

Former UCSB star fans 11 in earning fifth win of the season By GERRY FALL NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Shane Bieber made it look easy at UCSB. He’s doing the same thing in the big leagues. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out 11 in six innings to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Bieber allowed no runs on six hits with no walks to earn his fifth win of the season against no losses.

He faced a first-and-third, no-out situation in the bottom of the sixth, but Bieber recorded two strikeouts and a fly out to get out of the inning with no runs scored. Cleveland provided all the offense Bieber would need in the second inning when catcher Beau Taylor singled home the game’s first run. The Indians added their final run in the eighth. Bieber’s 11 strikeouts against the Pirates brings his season total to 65. He’s now tied with Curt Schilling for the fourth most strikeouts by a pitcher in his first

six starts since 1893. Thursday also marked Bieber’s fourth double-digit strikeout game of the season. The only other pitchers in Cleveland franchise history to do the same in their first six starts are Sam McDowell in 1966, 1968 and 1970, and Hall of Famer Bob Feller in 1946. Bieber’s effort on Thursday night followed a seven-inning shutout performance in his previous start against the Detroit Tigers. He also lowered his earned run average to 1.11. With runners in scoring position

this season, batters have gone 0-15 with nine strikeouts against Bieber. In other baseball news, the Dodgers made easy work of the Seattle Mariners with a 6-1 victory. Left-hander Clayton Kershaw struck out 11 in seven strong innings and Cody Bellinger --the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner --- belted a home run for the second game in a row. Kershaw moved past the late Don Drysdale into second place on the Dodgers all-time strikeout list.

pandemic do not protect the wearer from particulate matter like the N-95 masks, which are meant for purposes of public health and in limited supply. “Those cloth face coverings are really meant to protect our neighbors from our respiratory droplets, but they’re not intended to protect us from wildfire smoke,” she said. The smoke’s arrival in Santa Barbara County coincides with a heatwave which, along with stagnant air conditions, has increased ozone levels in certain areas of the county. As now is a time when residents might like to crack a window at night and let cool air circulate through their homes for relief, Ms. Hoffman said it’s best to strike a balance between beating the heat and keeping smoke outside. To do this, she suggested only keeping windows open so long as the area in which one lives isn’t smokey. For residents who can afford

to spend some money to keep the air inside their homes clean, the APCD recommends creating a “clean air room.” According to agency infographics, this can be done by purchasing a highefficiency particulate air purifier, which can reduce particulate

matter indoors by 90%. A HEPA purifier for an average-sized bedroom costs around $75 and can be purchased at hardware stores and through online retailers. With a 20-inch by 20-inch box fan, a MERV air filter with the same dimensions, and duct tape,

those who want to clean the air in their rooms can make their own HEPA filter by taping the filter to the back of the box fan. The components for a build-your-own HEPA filter cost around $40. A homemade HEPA filter should be turned off while one is sleeping and shouldn’t be left unattended, as it can be a fire hazard. When used during a wildfire, the MERV filter on a homemade HEPA filter should be replaced more frequently than usual. For the best possible indoor air quality during a wildfire, the APCD also recommends minimizing sources of indoor air pollution. In addition to keeping windows closed, ways of reducing indoor air pollution include refraining from burning candles or firewood, using a range hood while cooking, contacting a professional to check for air leaks with a blower door test, and checking with an HVAC professional to see what MERV filter rating one’s house can handle. email: jgrega@newspress.com

Bieber shines again for Indians

this last season. He finished with 1,347 points for his career. “Max is as good of an offensive player as I have ever coached in my career,” said coach Joe Pasternack, whose previous schools included Pac-12 powers Arizona and California. “He is just such a tough kid. He loves and thrives on the big moment. “Every day, he just amazes me with what he does.” He was also amazed by what Heidegger endured. A knee injury, three concussions and a badly sprained foot and ankle kept him off the court for long stretches the last two years. His luck was so bad that his third concussion occurred last season when his head hit a metal handrail that had just been installed for safety reasons. “I wanted to play for my brothers — play for my teammate and my coaches — but certain things would happen,” Heidegger said. The COVID-19 pandemic has loomed as the latest obstacle, canceling several workouts that he’d been offered by NBA teams. He still hopes to follow in the footsteps of Vincent, his former Gaucho teammate who has played in nine games this season with the Miami Heat. “I want the chance to pursue the dream as long as I can,” he said. Vincent, who ranks ninth on UCSB’s all-time scoring list with 1,441 points, is part of an AllDecade Second Team that spans the entire 10 years — from 2010 graduate James Powell, to 2015 graduate John Green, to 2018 graduate Leland King, and finally to current Gaucho Amadou Sow of the Class of 2022. Sow, a two-pick time to the AllBig West Second Team, will get his chance for first-team honors this spring — as well as in 2030 with UCSB’s next All-Decade Team.
