Staying in touch Goleta Valley Library offers free craft kits and tech tutoring By MARILYN MCMAHON NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

C

raft kits for children and tech tutoring for all ages are among the new services offered during the COVID-19 crisis by the libraries in Goleta, Buellton and Solvang. “We miss doing programs for area children, so between these craft kits and our virtual programming, we feel a bit closer to our library users. I think kids will enjoy the wide variety of crafts we will be sending to them,” said Allison Gray, director. “All parents need to do is fill out a brief form on the Goleta Valley Library’s website, www. goletavalleylibrary.org, and the library will send the free craft kits to their homes.” Each month, families can request up to two craft kits for each child. Some may require items such as glue, crayons, etc., and the library director cautions that some of the pieces have quite small pieces so younger children should be monitored at all times. “These kits are yours to keep,” said Ms. Gray, who purchased the crafts, which she placed into plastic baggies along with instructions translated into Spanish and a tag saying it was a gift of the Goleta Valley Library. “It took me all of last week to prepare 2,500 kits with the generous help of my family,” she said. For more activities for children, Ms. Gray said parents can find recorded and live programs such as Wriggly Storytime, Family Storytime, craft programs and more on the library’s Facebook page @GoletaValleyLibrary. “There is also a list of ideas on ‘How to Keep Busy at Home for All Ages’ on the library’s website,” she said. The tech tutoring service is being offered because “now more than ever, people are relying on technology for work, staying in touch with friends and general entertainment. The library knows this and is moving its in-person tech tutoring to live video chat or over the phone in order to continue to support the community during the stay-athome order,” said Ms. Gray. Library patrons can receive personalized one-on-one help with their laptops, tablets, cellphones, smart TVs, etc. “We want to make sure everyone feels connected at this time and is able to take advantage of the library’s different online offerings,” she said. Live tech tutoring is available with a trained library staff member from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment Tuesday through Friday. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes depending on the help needed. Interested persons can fill out the library’s Live Tech Tutoring Request Form on the website or call 805-964-7878, and a staff member will confirm the date and time. Spanish language support is also available. “If you don’t have a Goleta Valley or Santa Ynez Valley library card, you can get one by going to the Black Gold eCard Registration webpage,” said Ms.Gray. The libraries offer personalized reading lists for patrons who fill out a form providing information on the type of books they like and don’t like, and a staff member will compile a reading list for them. “Patrons can also order books or audiobooks not owned by the library by filling out a Zip Books request form,” she said. “Although our staff are now working from home, they are still available to answer questions via email at goletavalleylibrary@cityofgoleta. org.” Email: mmcmahon@newspress. com

Fascinating mixed media art

I have many famous museums a guide that give and art schools such names of artists as the Rijksakadamie who sign this way, in Amsterdam, 2007. I and I found E.E.’s leaned that in 2010 the artist to be Marcel artist was named an Pinas (1971, Moengo, Honored Young Global ask the Marowijne, East Leader in 2020 at the Suriname.) She bought descendants of runaway slaves it for a few dollars at Destined who established a unique culture for Grace Thrift in Goleta. That’s in the dense South American what folks are doing in the “shut

down;” they are looking at their walls and taking the time to see what they have, if they, in fact, love it, and if not, what they can do with it! (We are all doing this EE; as I walk through my Upper East neighborhood, I see all kinds of free stuff out on the lawns.) But don’t give this painting away, E.E. The artist has great representation at Smithdavidson Gallery of Amsterdam and Miami, a gallery known worldwide for Aboriginal paintings. Their website feature works by Pinas that you will find similar to yours. I recognize the artist’s bright colors, which I found was his reference to the customary geometric and bright colors used in the homes of the Marron people. The artist is also a sculptor and has mounted installations; some use colorful fabrics, bones, totems, and of course the Afaka alphabet. One particularly interesting sculpture is a tea kettle engraved in a circle with this distinctive alphabet. E.E., you can look up the book by the artist, Tembe Fi Libi, about his own project, a cultural festival in his home village of Moengo. My research shows auction results of this artist going for $3000-4000; however, if you were to purchase at this gallery mentioned above, you’d likely pay MUCH more. You see what you learn when you look around your house??

Dr. Elizabeth Stewart’s column appears every week in the Salon & Style section. Her new book, “Collect Value Divest: The Savvy Appraiser,” is available at local bookstores and at amazon.com. HOROSCOPE Aries â€” Venus retrograde is coming for you, Aries. Expect uncertainties, flaky behavior, and spontaneous decisions around love. With Jupiter turning retrograde on Thursday in your goals sector, you might need to revise some business plans or pursuits. Taurus — Mercury leaves your sign and enters Gemini on Monday—entering your money zone. However, Venus (your ruling planet) is turning retrograde—also in your finance sector—which could stir the pot in your bank account. Gemini — Your ruling planet, Mercury, moves into your sign on Monday—setting the tone for a superb couple weeks ahead! Venus still moves through your sign, which also makes you feel comfortable. However, it turns retrograde this week which can cause some delays in romance. Cancer â€” Mercury moves through your spiritual zone for the next couple weeks, starting Monday. Is it time to reconnect with like-minded people through meditation, yoga, or other spiritual practices? Tap into your soul,Cancer. Tuesday sees Mars moving into Pisces into your travel zone—bringing a bit more excitement to your week. Leo â€” The sun moves through a section of your chart that asks you to show off your best talents. But with Pluto and Jupiter adding to the mix, don’t try to show off too soon. Mercury moves into your social zone at the beginning of the week—making you the ultimate networker with friends and family. Get everyone together, Leo! Virgo â€” With Mercury moving into Gemini, you’re about to become very persuasive over the next couple weeks. However, as Venus turns retrograde in the same zone, you may not be able to complete a certain business transaction you were looking forward to. Just keep your head up, Virgo! Libra â€” As Mercury moves into your travel zone, you could become curious about many new things—leading you to take

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.
