The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday to discuss an appeal by hotelier Patrick Nesbit, who is seeking approval for a private helicopter landing pad in Summerland. Mr. Nesbit, who founded, chairs and serves as the CEO of Windsor Capital Group, filed the application on behalf of Carpinteria Valley Farms. He is seeking a conditional use permit and coastal development permit to authorize operation of a helistop with one landing zone to be used for personal use and emergency services. The landing zone would consist of a 25-square foot plastic tarp located in the center of the 20-acre property that would temporarily be placed prior to landing and removed following take off. Personal use of the helistop would be limited to a maximum of two times per week between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Emergency responders would be able to use the helistop on an as-needed basis depending
upon the nature of potential emergencies. The helicopter used by Mr. Nesbit would take the ocean route as opposed to the mountain route in order to avoid potential disturbance to residences. There would be no refueling or maintenance at the proposed landing zone and the project does not propose any construction. The project was scheduled for a hearing before the Planning Commission in June 2019, though it was continued until September to allow review and response to the approximately 200 letters submitted from the community in opposition of the project. Prior to the September hearing, the applicant revised the project description to propose one landing zone, as opposed to two, and adjusted the hours of operations. At the September hearing, the commissioners directed staff to return on Nov. 7, 2019 with findings for denial and the project was denied. Mr. Nesbit asserts that the denial is inconsistent with the Please see SUPERVISORS on A8

“We looked at each other and said, ‘Let’s make this happen.’ ” Those were the four words spoken between the presidents of two longtime nonprofits — the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara and the United Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County — that brought both organizations together as one. The nonprofits announced their merger today. From Carpinteria to Lompoc, every club will now operate cohesively as one organization — a move that is expected to cut down on operation costs in order to provide more for the kids. The merger has been a work-in-progress for eight months now, and David Bolton, president of the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara, referred to it as “a long, lengthy process, but a very beneficial process.” “This would not have happened without the vision of both boards, the commitment of the board members, the hard work of the staff and the generosity of so many supporters that understand the benefits of having a boys and girls club in their local community,” Mr. Bolton said. “From Carp to Goleta, from Santa Barbara to Lompoc, the boys and girls clubs have impacted thousands and thousands of our youth.” Mr. Bolton said that because of the merger, the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara’s operating budget will likely reduce to 20% on an annual basis. “When your operation costs reduce, there’s more money to offer programs and scholarships,” Mr. Bolton said. “There’s such an important need, especially right now. Now, more than ever, the boys and girls clubs are going to be playing a very important role to make sure our youth do not take a step backwards.” Please see CLUBS on A8

By merging the Santa Barbara club and the collection of other clubs in the county, operation costs will be reduced, meaning the club can provide more resources, scholarships and programs for the kids.

Fourth of July weekend fizzles out By PAUL GONZALEZ NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
The United Boys and Girls Club now serves more than 5,000 kids from Lompoc to Carpinteria, with 450 volunteers in addition to the staff.
Multi-colored fireworks lit up the night sky along the South County on the Fourth of July evening, but that excited energy didn’t translate into overcrowded beaches on Sunday. An overcast morning and county-wide beach “passive recreation” ban didn’t stop some families from toting their
umbrellas and lawn chairs to Carpinteria State Beach, though most beachgoers were walking, jogging, swimming or taking part in an activity. According to Santa Barbara County statistics, the county has 3,406 COVID-19 cases, as of Saturday. Cottage Health is caring for 253 patients across all campuses. lthough she didn’t realize it at the time, the economic recession of 20072009 turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Trudie Reich of Carpinteria. Instead of pursuing a career in social work, she became the founder and owner of Beach Baby Nannies, which is somewhat of a misnomer because the flourishing agency provides child care specialists in addition to other household staff such as personal and executive assistants, private chefs, housekeepers and house and estate managers. “I consider myself a matchmaker. I match individuals and families with the right kind of help to make their lives easier,” said Ms. Reich, who earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2009 at UCSB. “Unfortunately, because of the recession, there were no jobs in social work, so I decided to take a position as a nanny for a family in San Francisco. I had been babysitting since the age of 14, earning money for my cell phone and other expenses all through junior high at La Colina and high school at Santa Barbara High and college. It was a great source of income, and I love kids. I never considered it work,” she said. Her year as a nanny for two infants was not only lucrative — she earned $100,000 for the year she was there — but she also traveled with the family to Aspen, Hawaii, New York City, London and Paris. “It was a real eye opener because for the first time I observed the importance of a

They are often expected to work with children on such areas as language development, potty training, social manners and more.” Nannies typically earn $17 to $30 per hour, which includes both full-time and part-time nannies. “A full-time nanny earns $2,700 to $5,000 per month on average,” said Ms. Reich. “Many families provide benefits that include paid sick days, paid vacation, paid holidays and medical insurance.” For parents with more than one child, nanny care can be cost effective. Unlike traditional day care, parents don’t have to pay an additional fee for each child. “Nannies are paid one rate to care for all children in their employer’s family,” said Ms. Reich. Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

My problem is, there are times it’s awkward to not invite Tom and Sue (as well as the fact I have fun with them and would like them there). Drive-by sermons By PAUL GONZALEZ NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
Carpinteria Community Church Pastor Jarrett Johnson took his sermon to the rooftops on Sunday morning. On Easter, Mr. Johnson started holding services outdoors to comply with social distancing guidelines. Church members pull into the parking lot and form single file lines with their cars. Risdon’s 76 Service owner Don Risdon directed the traffic. Mr. Johnson celebrated the service on the church roof and attendees tuned into an AM radio frequency to listen to the readings and sermon. “Our church mission is ‘To worship God together and share Christ’s love with the world,’” Mr. Johnson said. “From the very beginning it was clear that the pandemic was going to make the ‘worship-Godtogether’ part very difficult. The drive-in service has enabled us to continue our mission because there is a certain degree of proximity that allows people to participate together,” Mr. Johnson said. Over 20 cars filled the church parking lot on Sunday, most had more than one person inside. Some church members sat on spaced-out chairs in the parking lot to enjoy the weather. Friends waived at each other, sang along with the hymns in their cars and received bread and juice for the celebration of The Lord’s Supper. Even the church’s most devoted puppy, a Yorkie-Poo named Kobe, was in attendance. “It’s been quite important for us to have the ability to be together. It’s important for us in a whole lot of ways,” Mr. Johnson said. The pandemic forced the church to stop all its youth activities. Mr. Johnson said the church is funding youth outreach through donations to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “They work with high schools throughout Santa Barbara County. Our resources go to Carpinteria High School,” Mr. Johnson said. Mr. Johnson admitted that he misses holding services in the church sanctuary and interacting with church members more closely, but he said the view from the roof is a unique experience in its own right. “When I look from the roof, you can see the mountains right there and a lot of palm trees in the background. It’s beautiful. It’s nice for us to be outdoors and there’s a

CLUBS
Now, kids will be able to walk into any club in Santa Barbara County and receive the same services. Mr. Bolton said it’s important for the clubs to be consistent and allow any person to walk in and feel like they’re part of something. The combined boys and girls clubs will now serve more than 5,000 youth from Lompoc to Carpinteria, with 450 volunteers working together with the staff. The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara will continue to

connection to the beginnings of this church before this building was built,” Mr. Johnson said. He explained that in the 1930s,
the congregation worshiped outdoors for two years. “There’s a historical connection for us in that way. Our mission is to proclaim Jesus Christ to the world.
The drive-in service really helps us be true to that mission that God gave us,” Mr. Johnson added.

can now all work together to be a stronger, more efficient organization means we can use those extra resources to help those kids. I think it’s going to be so good for the boys and girls clubs and the whole county to see us all working together to bring every possible resource to the kids in this community.” The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara, located at 632 E. Canon Perdido St., is the first club in the merged nonprofit to open today. Directors from all the other clubs will staff it in order to learn how to navigate limited capacity, social distancing and all other protocols.

county’s zoning ordinance and other laws and there was no substantial evidence to support the denial. He also said there was a lack of fair and impartial hearing, according to a staff report. The board will discuss whether to deny the appeal, thus denying the project. Several community members wrote the commissioners speaking out against the proposed project, with many saying it would open the door for similar permits in the future. “This would certainly change the character of my neighborhood and likely lead to diminution of my property value,” wrote John Genovese, of Montecito.
“We’re going to use that as an opportunity to make sure our staff knows exactly how to manage the COVID world. We’re going to have a very experienced and dedicated staff,” Mr. Vallejo said. He added that the reopening of all the other clubs will depend on fundraising, and they need as much help as they can get from the community to “charge as little as possible for our kids to come to the club.” The clubs will shift their focus to provide resources to the youth who have fallen behind in homeschooling amid the school closures. email: gmccormick@newspress.com
cannabis activities. The board previously considered setting a hearing June 2 and 11. In other business, the board will receive a COVID-19 update and provide direction as appropriate. Also Tuesday, the board will receive an update on the progress of the county’s energy and climate action plan goals in the development of the 2030 Climate Action Plan. The board will be asked to approve an agreement with Rincon Consultants for $516,235 for climate action planning services. The meeting will be held virtual and will be streamed live on local cable channel 20, online at www.countyofsb.org and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/user/CSBTV20. email: mwhite@newspress.com

“The noise and danger are obvious to even the most casual observer, and you would be setting a horrific precedent that will then lead to other of our neighbors asking for helicopter permits,” wrote Tom and Amelia Mullaney, of Santa Barbara. “It is hard to understand who would think that landing helicopters in a residential area would be reasonable behavior,” wrote Susan Viniar, of Carpinteria. “Anyone who can afford to arrive in a helicopter can land at an airport and take a car to their property.” Also on Tuesday, the supervisors will set a hearing to consider recommendations regarding the county Planning Commission’s recommended ordinance amendments to the county land use development code and the coastal zoning ordinance to implement new development standards and permit requirements regarding certain commercial

Mr. Bolton calls it a “merger of two equals.” “It’s really exciting that two groups like this can come together and become one,” he said. “It’s a good feeling when everybody’s together.” Tony Vallejo, president of the United Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County, was once a “club kid,” and his son was also a part of the club in Goleta. “I know how important clubs are,” he said. “The fact that we
