Museum reopens galleries after years of renovation By ANNELISE HANSHAW NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art reopened Sunday after a $50 million renovation spanning six years of the museum’s now eight decades of curation. Museum staff controlled the flow of visitors, requiring reservations. Families, friends and individuals filled the galleries. The closer areas are to Ludington Court, the two-story entry and connecting point between wings, the busier they were Sunday. Galleries deeper into the museum offered stillness, and visitors seemed to move more slowly between the works. The renovations targeted structural demands of the museum’s original 1912 building and another section around 75 years old. Larry J. Feinberg, SBMA Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Director and CEO, says the structures are “probably the safest buildings in town.” The most important thing, he Please see MUSEUM on A4

Voice Magazine publisher Dr. Mark Whitehurst announced his candidacy Saturday for the Santa Barbara mayoral election. According to a press release, the Santa Barbara County ClerkRecorder’s office certified his nomination signatures. The City Clerk does not have his filing history in its online campaign portal, but the City Clerk’s office is only open Monday through Thursday. Dr. Whitehurst would be the fifth mayoral candidate alongside incumbent Cathy Murillo, Randy Rowse, James Joyce and Deborah Schwartz. “Campaign dialogue adds to the community conversation on key issues, like the absolute need for a community wide vaccine mandate and testing for both the public and private sector,” he said in a news release. Seemingly candid with his views, he also anticipated questions on the State Street promenade. “The closure of State Street was an absolute necessity during the pandemic and the resulting challenge is how to make it beautiful, accessible and inclusive for all ages,” he said. His roots stem from Des Moines, Iowa, but he moved to Santa Barbara in 1992 and considers himself a community leader. His magazine, Voice (aka CASA), publishes weekly and covers local news, art and entertainment. Dr. Whitehurst is a board member of the Downtown organization and previously served as president and treasurer. He also volunteers on the board of Santa Barbara Beautiful and the Santa Barbara Park and Recreation Community Foundation. He is a founding member of First Thursday and enjoys the arts. He has been a member of the SBCC community orchestra. He studied at Graceland University for his undergraduate degree. He holds a masters and PhD in mythology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. He earned a certificate in mediation from UCSB. He has been married to his wife and business partner Kerry Methner for 22 years. He has one son and two grandchildren. His campaign is online at markformayorsb.com.

SB City Council to receive Public Works updates By ANNELISE HANSHAW NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
The Santa Barbara City Council will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday for three Public Works reports atop a consent agenda. The Access Advisory Committee will provide an update on its accomplishments within the past year. The AAC advises the Architectural Board of Review and the Historic Landmarks Commission on accessibility issues that may violate the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA. The ADA provides rules regarding curb ramps, elevators, sidewalks or any other feature that may ensure buildings are accessible to disabled individuals. A recent accessibility issue in City Council was parklets. Some businesses were moving furniture onto sidewalks, making the area impassable for people in wheelchairs. So the City Council mandated on June 22 that furniture had to be moved off of the sidewalk space. AAC will discuss this issue and its future initiatives in its presentation. The engineering division of the Public Works Department will review the Capital Improvement Program Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2021. The City completed 13 projects in the fiscal year, and 14 projects are in construction. The last update will be on the Chapala Street Vision Zero Safety Project, and Public Works will propose a new traffic striping pattern. The project is intended to reduce Chapala Street from two lanes to one between Arrellaga Street and

The Roddenberries weren’t the only source of musical entertainment at the event. Vaughn Armstrong, who has played more alien characters on various “Star Trek” series than any other actor in the franchise’s 55-year-history, said that today he mainly enjoys performing his music. He and other “Star Trek” actors, including 1972 Lompoc High School graduate Jeffrey Combs, entertained fans Sunday night with their Rat Pack concert of jazz and rock parodies.

The McCormick Gallery features contemporary works acquired during renovations in an exhibition titled “In the Meanwhile...Recent Acquisitions of Contemporary Art.”
Renovation updated lighting, climate control, HVAC systems MUSEUM
Continued from Page A1 says, is what you can’t see. A close second is the added square footage. “We have much more of our collection on view than at any time in the museum’s history,” he told the News-Press. “We’re able to show off more than ever the diversity of the collection. We want to present as many different cultures and centuries and voices as possible.” African masks stagger up tall walls across from the Candace Dauphinot Grand Staircase. Previously, visitors may have missed the second level. Kupiec Architects PC designed a staircase that guides this new wave of guests to the new contemporary art gallery. The new space, dedicated to contemporary works, sits atop the McCormick Gallery. The square footage is brand new and light-filled, as softened skylights bring light from above. Throughout the museum, old fixtures have been swapped for LED lighting. The change is both energy-efficient and optimum for art viewing. SBMA has always curated photography, but the renovations have provided dedicated gallery space for photographs. Museum staff decided to seal off a balcony
that was open to Ludington Court. The skylight above the court restricted what type of art was possible to display on the balcony’s walls. As a gallery space, photographs line three walls, and a photography exhibition on Inge Morath is around the corner. Also upstairs is the Ala Story Gallery, filled with new media. The gallery is filled with videos and cutting-edge artwork featuring technology. The acquisition of new works did not stop during the renovation. To celebrate some of SBMA’s latest pieces, staff set up “In the Meanwhile...Recent Acquisitions of Contemporary Art.” The exhibition, located across from the main entrance, is a colorful mix of sculpture and canvas acquired by former SBMA curator Julie Joyce. The artifacts and antiques are also wellrepresented in the renovated spaces. Ludington Court features European pieces centered around the “Lansdowne Hermes,” a marble sculpture on a six-foot elevated platform. The paintings, many surrounded by gilded frames, are hung salon-style — a new treatment for this space. The court is surrounded by the building’s original arches, inviting guests to stroll to the
adjacent galleries. “The spaces are not so compartmentalised because they had been. It’s much more open and there’s a flow of space and light and air,” Mr. Feinberg said. The climate control and HVAC systems are upgraded, creating a healthier environment for the art and guests. Mr. Feinberg was “thrilled” to see many visitors enjoying the museum Sunday. “The museum belongs to the community; we want them to enjoy it,” he said. “This artwork belongs to the community, so it’s great that they can see as much of it as possible — more and more than they ever could before.” There are more galleries to SBMA’s 25,000piece collection. Staff are preparing for more renovation but have a big exhibition planned soon. “Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources” will be on display from February 27 to May 22. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is open every day except Mondays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with hours extended Thursdays until 8 p.m. For more information, go to sbma.net. email: ahanshaw@newspress.com

LAS VEGAS — Capt. Kirk couldn’t stand still. Walking quickly back and forth on stage, William Shatner enthusiastically teased fans, poked fun at himself and made the audience howl with laughter. Age 90, Mr. Shatner is showing no signs of slowing down as fans discovered at the 55-Year Mission Tour,
a “Star Trek” convention, Saturday at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Mr. Shatner clearly had fun answering questions from fans and encouraged young kids to speak boldly into the microphone and make their voices heard. Capt. Kirk wants everyone to be bold. And they were. One fan teased Mr. Shatner after he gave a long answer to a young boy’s question.
“Where did he go?” Mr. Shatner asked this fan, who was next in line. Without missing a beat, the fan told Mr. Shatner, “He grew up!” Capt. Kirk and the large audience laughed. Fans were masked at the five-day Creation Entertainment event, and actors in the dealers’ room wore masks and signed autographs from behind Please see STAR TREK on B2
As Max Grodénchik (Rom on “Deep Space Nine”) looks on, Casey Biggs (Damar on “DS9”) talks about how he got his role on the “Star Trek” series after simply auditioning with a single, undramatic line. From such humble beginnings came one of Star Trek’s most nuanced and complex characters, developing from an awe-struck underling to a menacing villain, a ruined alcoholic and, finally, a revolutionary hero.

plastic shields at their tables. People attending the convention were required to show proof of vaccinations or be tested for COVID-19. But for fans and actors who haven’t had a convention in two years, it was a love fest for “Star Trek” and a chance to see longtime friends and stars. The bond between fans and TV stars has grown so much over the decades that it’s not unusual for them to chat during impromptu encounters in the halls or the dealers room. Several fans came from the Santa Barbara area. One of them was Amanda Payatt, who walked proudly around the convention with Nomad. As most fans of the original “Star Trek” series know, that’s the floating probe looking for its creator. Don’t upset it. Special moments at the convention included Dennis McCarthy, a keyboardist with Glen Campbell who went on to compose the theme of “Star Trek:
Deep Space Nine,” conducting the Nevada Pops Orchestra. Chase Masterson, forever known as Leeta on “DS9,” sang an enthusiastic blend of jazz standards and a favorite song from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” before an audience in one of the smaller theaters. On stage in the main ballroom, George Takei, aka Sulu, reflected on “Star Trek’s” power to embrace differences and diversity. Walter Koenig talked on the same stage about all the wigs he had to try on when he was first cast as Chekov, which officially was “Star Trek’s” attempt to include a Russian on the bridge. That was true, but another reason was to have a character to appeal to young fans, someone similar to Davy Jones of the Monkees. Hence the wig for Chekov’s early episodes. The convention also celebrated the empowerment of women in unprecedented roles, in front of and behind the cameras, thanks to “Star Trek.” And Robin Curtis, who played Lt. Saavik, Spock’s Vulcan protege in “Star Trek III” and “Star Trek

IV,” explained how Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock and director of those movies, helped her to become an unemotional Vulcan. In one case, he directed her many times to say the line, until it had no inflection, “David is dead.” David was Capt. Kirk’s son, and he was killed by a Klingon. Saavik was talking to Capt. Kirk on her communicator. In a surprising way, Ms. Curtis’ seemingly emotionless voice made the scene that much more emotional. Today, Ms. Curtis is a real estate agent, which is actually not an uncommon second profession for actors. Another actress, Nicole de Boer, who played Ezri Dax on “Deep Space Nine,” also sells real estate, and Ms. Curtis encouraged fans to contact Ms. de Boer if they need a home. The convention, which wrapped up Sunday, has had its share of pleasant surprises. That happened when Ben Vereen took the stage. He played Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge’s dad in one “Next Generation” episode and acted in the groundbreaking “Roots” miniseries (which also featured LeVar Burton, who played Geordi). And Mr. Vereen is a Tonywinning star known for his great vocals. He surprised the on-stage band, the Roddenberries, by suddenly singing with the lead vocalist during his exit music. He still had his microphone with him. Later, a band representative told the News-Press that the Philadelphia band, named after “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, knows to be calm and cool with the unexpected on stage. Off stage, she said, the band couldn’t stop talking about the thrill of unexpectedly performing with Mr. Vereen. The house band found a connection with a star after its trek from the East. email: dmason@newspress.com

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

There’s a lot of history associated with wool tapestry
J.
S. sends me a 1980s Polish handwoven and artist designed wool tapestry titled “Na Stoku” — meaning “On Slope.” It measures 54 by 50 inches. She wonders about the midcentury modern craft piece and how it fits into the history of textile art. Polish weavers were discovered in 1962 at the First Lausanne International Tapestry Biennial, where they made a huge splash because the designers of the works actually wove their pieces. Previously, an artist designed the work — and had the piece woven at a workshop. Why did this fusion happen in Poland? World War II, which left Poland in ruins, is the reason for this fortuitous happening in the textile craft world. The nature of artists is that they are problem solvers, and the problem was: “How can I create without the materials (medium) I need?” Thus necessity was indeed the mother of invention, and it inspired a new world for textile artists, as anyone who had a piece of macrame in 1970 will attest. Polish artists created with what they had.
The Polish regime was not art-friendly in the 1950 and ’60s. Therefore, art materials were expensive and not available, so Polish artists found ways of finding materials with which to create. In the case of weavers, they used simple yarns or, sometimes sisal, and they created a new style of abstraction because they could not do fine work in thick rustic handmade wool. They created a type of tapestry that was more akin to sculpture because it had dimension on a twodimensional plane. Weaving, as is traditional in Poland along with many other hand-crafted folk art forms, was taught in school. The materials had to be reinvented, which led to a new look, called New Tapestry, so sought after by midcentury modern collectors today. The images were in some cases pictorial, as in J.S.’s piece, but often went out on an “abstraction limb.” Those abstract or semi-abstract works are desirable today. The crafts movement was getting under way in the mid-20th century, when small villages were creating

beautiful Swedish furniture, and small centers in Poland were designing and creating wonderful textiles. Few people then appreciated that handmade quality, but collectors who had “the eye” did. And today, of course, we have a respect for that originality we call the “proximity to the artist’s hand.” The concept of the studio-designercraftsman came out of this era, and America followed suit. Thus “out-of-the-way” artist’s colonies began to be hotbeds of this new tapestry, such as remote villages on the East Coast, Scottish workshops, and Australian Guilds,
centers in Northern California and small towns in the Rockies. 1978 saw the exhibit “22 Polish Textile Artists” in Fort Collins, Colo., featuring works with blocks of color, sculptural techniques of piling on yarn, or cutting yarn for texture, as in J.S.’s piece, and on a large, large scale. Meanwhile, if you remember the 1970s, the American Southwest was newly rediscovered, and weavers traveled from San Francisco to New Mexico to study and weave with Native American weavers, setting up a small center in remote Oregon for weaving New Textiles.
At the foundation, all textile manufacturing was performed by the French monolith Gobelins, tapestry weavers for the Louis king line since the beginning of the 16th century. Polish artists termed the style of their work “Gobelins” as is stated on the verso label of J.S.’ work. Some Polish labels of the midcentury bear the image of a rooster, standing for Cepelia, the famous Polish Arts and Handcrafts Foundation, set up just after World War II in 1949 to support Polish traditional hand work and to support crafts artists who had no outlet and little income. As Polish hand work was
essential to the Polish ethnographic character, the Foundation distributed the work. Some of the artists they supported today are recognized as textile masters. Amongst those people who love mid-century modern tapestries, Piotr Grabowski’s work is valued, and it is collected for $5,000 or more. These weavers of repute sell in auction houses in Europe for high figures as such handicraft has become recognized as fine art. However, J.S.’s piece bears a name I could not find, and it is representational, and not abstracted, in the flattened picture plane so valued today. I would put the value at $500. A resurgence of interest in the form is indicated by a 2019-2020 show “19th and 20th Century Tapestries” at none other than the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Dr. Elizabeth Stewart’s “Ask the Gold Digger” column appears Mondays in the News-Press Life section. Written after her father’s COVID-19 diagnosis, Dr. Stewart’s book “My Darlin’ Quarantine: Intimate Connections Created in Chaos” is a humorous collection of five “what-if” short stories that end in personal triumphs over presentday constrictions. It’s available at Chaucer’s in Santa Barbara.
