Celebrating Women’s History Month in Santa Barbara
Women’s History Month, which takes place in March, is a time to honor and commemorate women’s achievements to culture and society. Women have always had significant roles in society, striving for justice and equality, breaking down obstacles, and inspiring future generations. Our very own Santa Barbara, California, has produced a number of notable women who have made their impact on history. I did some research and wanted to share a small sampling of all the amazing women here in Santa Barbara.
Strong women who battled for their rights and the rights of others have a long history in Santa Barbara. Pearl Chase is among the most significant female figures in Santa Barbara’s past. Chase dedicated her life to preserving and enhancing Santa Barbara’s natural environment and cultural history. She had a significant part in the creation of public parks and gardens in the city and formed the Community Arts Organization. The numerous public areas that Chase helped construct carry on her legacy and everyone can be inspired by her dedication to maintaining Santa Barbara’s distinctive character and beauty. Historian Walker A. Tompkins summarized her influence on the city by saying, “She did more to beautify her adopted hometown of Santa Barbara than any other individual.” WOW!
Dr. Lois Phillips is another outstanding Santa Barbara woman. Author and leadership specialist Phillips have spent more than 30 years advancing diversity and empowering women in the workplace. She has authored several books on diversity and leadership and has received recognition for her work in the area. Dr. Phillips has a particular interest in Glass Ceiling programs advancing women’s careers and cultivating women’s Board leadership.
We cannot discuss outstanding women from Santa Barbara without mentioning Madame Ganna Walska. Walska was a Polish opera singer and a passionate gardener who created one of the most beautiful and unique gardens in the world at her home in Santa Barbara. She
Around Town
Once again the SBAOR steps up in the wake of disaster
purchased the historic 37-acre “Cuesta Linda” estate in Montecito near Santa Barbara, California, intending to use it as a retreat for Tibetan monks. Due to restrictions during the war, the monks were not allowed to travel there. So she renamed her estate Lotusland, after the sacred flower in Tibetan religions. Lotusland garden is a masterpiece of horticulture and design featuring exotic plants and sculptures from around the world. Walska’s legacy lives on in the thousands of visitors who come to Lotusland every year to experience its beauty and tranquility.
Diana Bull is an excellent example of women in real estate. She began her real estate career in 1971 at 22 and became a broker two years later. She owned and managed her own real estate and mortgage companies for over 40 years. She served as President of the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® in 1982 and has been involved at the local, state, and national levels ever since. I have had the privilege to attend both the California Association of REALTORS® and National Association of REALTORS® conferences with her. She is so well respected, and it’s an honor to watch her in action representing Santa Barbara.
Of course, I couldn’t write an article on amazing women without including my mom Jane, wife Melissa, and daughter Caitlin. These three women continue to motivate and inspire me through their successes, strength, and love. Thank you all for what you have done for me and the others around you. I am so blessed to have my daughter Caitlin continue my legacy and impact the world in her unique way.
Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women throughout history. Santa Barbara is home to many exceptional women who have impacted their community and beyond. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, remember and honor the many women in and outside of Santa Barbara who has worked to make the world a better place.

Here’s why your home gets so dusty and what to do about it
By Hunter Boyce
According to Home Advisor, how quickly dust collects inside a home depends on a few environmental factors. Photo courtesy Dreamstime/TNS
When it comes to spring cleaning, the No. 1 enemy of the home is dirty and difficult to remove — and it’s everywhere. That enemy is, of course, dust. And it begs the question: Why do homes get so dusty?
“Household dust is a complex matrix of components including dust mites, dust mite feces, bacteria, mold, pet dander, small insects, pollen, and particles,” Ketan Patel, design manager of floor care at Dyson, told Better Homes & Gardens. “Dust mite droppings, dead bodies of dust mites, pet dander, and small insects are included as allergens.”
Invest in air purification
According to Home Advisor, how quickly dust collects inside a home depends on a few environmental factors. The age and quality of a home’s HVAC filter, duct leaks and humidity levels can all affect how quickly dust accumulates.
A great way to reduce dust buildup in the home is to invest in a high-quality air purifier. Purifiers with UltraHEPA, carbon and volatile organic compound (VOC) filters can eliminate dust, microorganisms, pollen, mold, bacteria and several viruses.
Clean those dirty carpets
Dirty carpets are often filled with dust mites, making them a significant cause of dust buildup inside the home, according to Kukun. The largest causes of dust mites and nasty particle buildup in carpets are pets and walking around the home in your shoes.
Regularly cleaning your carpets can have a significant impact on dust dispersion throughout the home.
Check for leaks
According to Upstairs Downstairs Cleaning, leaky windows and leaky doors can do more damage to your home than simply running up the electricity bill. Dust and pollen can blow into your home through these leaks, especially if you live off of a dirt road or in a dryer area.
Most hardware stores sell epoxy solutions to fill in door and window leaks, ensuring that neither your energy bill nor annual spring cleaning get out of hand.

Real Estate Q&A:
Should I get a reverse mortgage?
By Gary M. Singer
Question: I am 83 years old, and my only asset is my condo. I am trying to plan my estate to benefit my cousin, who lives in a different state. She suggested I get a reverse mortgage so she will not have to sell my condo. After doing research and getting a quote, I am flummoxed and don’t trust the whole concept. I would appreciate your advice.
– Bernice
Answer:
There are many tools you can use to plan your estate to make things easier for those you leave behind.
As the name suggests, reverse mortgages work like a regular mortgage loan, but in reverse. With a traditional mortgage, the borrower receives the entire loan amount and spends a fixed amount of time, typically 30 years, repaying their lender. With a reverse mortgage loan, the lender lends a lower loan amount based on the borrower’s age and the home’s value and then uses the home’s remaining equity to make the monthly payments.
This means that every month the balance owed to the lender grows. The
borrower does not have to make monthly payments, and the lender must wait until the borrower sells, moves out, or passes away to get repaid.
These loans are “non-recourse,” meaning the lender is limited to collecting no more than the value of the home when being repaid and cannot charge any deficiency against the borrower’s remaining estate.
Unless a borrower passes away shortly after getting the loan, there is often little or no equity left in the home. Because of this, there is little reason for the borrower’s heirs to sell the home, and the lender is left to foreclose.
However, if there is equity, it pays for the heirs to try to sell the home themselves.
Whether a reverse mortgage makes sense for you will depend on your situation. It might make sense if you have an existing mortgage and no longer want to make monthly payments or if you have a use for the money now.
However, if you own your home without a mortgage and have enough money to meet your expenses, you will give away your home’s equity without a good reason to do so.
You should speak to an estate planning professional to determine your best options.

Once upon a time, The Garden Guy was the executive director of the American Rose Society and its Gardens of the American Rose Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. My fondest memories are the times spent in the area dedicated to heirloom and English roses. The fragrance seemed to permeate the air, drawing you to investigate each and every selection with the nose.
This year will be a benchmark in the olfactory experience of roses with the debut of two new series, Reminiscent and Rise Up, both brought to you by Proven Winners.

The Reminiscent series boasts three colors: coral, crème and pink. They originate with a breeding team from Serbia that has seemingly done the impossible: capturing the look, fragrance and essence seen in Empress Josephine Bonaparte’s Garden, at La Malmaison outside Paris. Yet the roses are a manageable size, carefree from the standpoint of disease, and they have put the joy of fragrance back in the bloom.
My first Reminiscent Coral blossom told me all I needed to know. The blooms are exquisite, with a cupped shape. They made me think they deserved to be painted on canvas like the roses of old. The coral color with a hint of copper is so rare in the garden, and even more beautiful against the dark green foliage. Should you be wondering, they are indeed repeat bloomers.
The Reminiscent Crema, perhaps best compared to a buttermilk color, is slightly smaller than the Coral and the Pink, reaching only 3 feet tall. They all have a spread of around 2 feet. You will love both the fragrance and the high petal count. The Reminiscent Pink, like the Coral, screams heirloom with its shape and fragrance while reaching around 4 feet tall.
The Rise Up series boasts three unique colors. Lilac Days is an extremely rare color in the world of roses; Ringo is a double yellow with a red eye; and Amberness is a stunning amber around an orange bud. A fourth selection in the pipeline, so to speak, called Emberays, is a glowing orange and yellow maturing to pink. It will be available as a preorder and will hit garden centers next year.
These were bred in Shropshire, England, and they add a totally new dimension to the landscape in that they are mini-climbers reaching 5 feet in height with a spread of 36 inches. All over the rose world and in cottage garden circles everywhere, there will be a cheer of celebration, as the roses will be the perfect size to fit on what I call a Victorian tower. Can you imagine a tower with Rise Up Amberness surrounded by Unplugged So Blue salvia?
As a horticulturist, I hate to confess that pruning heirlooms or old garden climbing roses has caused me on more than one occasion to do too much thinking, “Should I cut here?” With these mini-climbers, it is much simpler. Just cut back by at least a third, maybe a little more, to a good healthy bud. These roses will all have the same basic requirements, good organic rich soil with plenty of sun. As usual, a bog is not your friend.
The Reminiscent and Rise Up roses offer one more critically important trait: memories. Your children or grandchildren who grow up with these roses will remember not only the wonderful fragrance in the landscape, but also the time with their family and what their childhood was like.
Norman Winter, horticulturist, garden speaker and author of “Tough-as-Nails Flowers for the South” and “Captivating Combinations: Color and Style in the Garden.”
