Your Handyman
Assembly Required! By Mark Baird Question: We just purchased an outdoor swing set with fort, slide, monkey bars, and fireman pole which is due for delivery next week and it needs to be assembled. Our kids are so excited and can barely wait to start playing on it! How much time do you think the assembly will take and is this something that my husband will be able to do by himself on a Saturday? Your HandYman: We receive many calls from homeowners and business people who have purchased all types of items requiring assembly including swing sets, executive desks, exercise equipment, IKEA cabinets, closet organizing systems, all types of home furniture, mobile filing systems, storage cabinets, and more. The good news is that so much of what we buy in the way of furniture and most home accessories is considerably less expensive now than in the past but most all of it is made over seas, and the bad news is that it is usually shipped completely unassembled. A friend of mine in the office furniture business tells me that the price of the typical office chair and desk has fallen 75% or more in the past 15 years since the advent of contract manufacturing in China. Assembly usually takes a lot more time than the typical homeowner expects and in many cases the assembly can be quite a project. Last year we assembled a very large swing set purchased from the Goleta big box center which had a delivery weight of 500+ lbs, the parts had minimum labeling, it was completely unassembled and required 16 hours by experienced assemblers using power tools before any swinging, climbing or sliding could take place. Possibly the most involved assembly project for us yet was for the assembly of an office which consist-
ed of executive desks with hutches purchased online also at a big box office supply store. Each individual desk unit shipped in 5 cartons with a total of 15 bags of fasteners, instructions with over 75 steps, all adding up to 5 hours assembly per unit. When shopping for items like furniture that require assembly, keep in mind that drawers and doors add significantly to assembly time and if you decide to tackle the job yourself, the best advice I can give is to patiently read and follow the directions closely. If you find yourself at step 47 and realize that the wrong part was used in step 17 when your favorite song was on the radio, then there is no choice but to undo the last 30 steps and start again. Examine the parts closely looking for the slight differences between the left and right side, use a power screw driver, and don’t force any parts that don’t willingly want to join together. It would be unlikely for a large play structure like the one you describe to take less than 4-6 hours for 2 strong people to assemble and depending on the brand it could take much longer. My advice is for your husband to line up a helper for all day Saturday, unpack and lay out all the parts in advance, read the instructions completely also in advance, and your backyard will soon be the envy of all the neighborhood kids.

By Jessica Damiano Newsday As fireworks blast off at the beginning of July, so does the garden: Many perennials peak, annuals spread like wildfire, and summer vegetables take a place at the table. Ensure they remain healthy and vigorous by following these tips and chores all month long. 1. When tomatoes, eggplants and peppers set fruit, give them another shot of fertilizer. 2. Accommodate for rainfall, or a lack thereof, and ensure the lawn gets 1 to 1-1/2 inches of water per week. Lessfrequent, deeper watering trumps a daily sprinkle. 3. Change the water in birdbaths often. 4. Happy Fourth of July! Alas, there will be no independence from garden chores. Today is prime time to fertilize the lawn. 5. For more verbena, euonymus, ivy and climbing roses, pull a stem to the ground and cover with soil. Cut away when roots grow and plant elsewhere. 6. To protect against late blight, treat potato and tomato plants with a fungicide containing chlorothalonil (or copper, if growing organic) and reapply every week. 7. Harvest green beans daily: The more you pick, the more the plant will produce. 8. Shear creeping phlox, sweet alyssum and candytuft now, and you’ll have fuller plants with more flowers next year. 9. Add one bunch of eelgrass per square foot of surface water to ponds to inhibit algae growth. 10. For bigger pumpkins, pick off all but one flower from each plant, then fertilize once a week. 11. Join the Great Long Island Tomato Challenge by sending a photo of your plant and your growing strategy to jessica.damiano@newsday.com. 12. To stave off powdery mildew, thin crowded plants, water only in the morning and aim water at roots, not leaves. 13. Water and turn the compost pile. 14. For larger dahlia blooms, remove side shoots from main stems. 15. Today’s the last day to shear hedges this year without risking damage. 16. Fertilize flowering perennials
now with a 5-10-5 product to increase blooming. 17. For the best flavor, harvest herbs around 10 a.m. _ after the dew has dried, but before the sun is at its strongest. 18. For fuller chrysanthemums and more fall flowers, cut plants back by onethird now. No worries about removing buds; they’ll make more. 19. Ensure trees planted this spring get a total of 1{ inches of water per week from rain or supplemental irrigation. 20. Pick flowers in the morning so they’ll last longer in a vase; clip them late in the day if you plan to dry them. 21. Sow seeds of cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, radish and broccoli directly into the garden for a fall crop. 22. Harvest potatoes when leaves begin to die back. 23. Harvest squash when fruit is 5 to 6 inches long, or plants will stop producing. 24. Go on a search-and-destroy mission for tomato hornworms. Pick them off by hand and drop them into a bucket of soapy water. 25. Deadhead grandiflora roses and hybrid teas. 26. Pick melons when their skins turn yellow and stems feel loose. 27. “Moon gardeners” claim to notice rapid plant growth during the full moon. Observe plants this week and share your findings with me at jessica.damiano@ newsday.com. 28. If you’re planning a vacation, remember to arrange for a surrogate waterer. Heat waves and drought can be killers. 29. To protect against vine borers, mound soil up around the bottom of squash and cucumber stems. 30. Divide bearded iris, replanting with the tops of crowns exposed. 31. Fertilize container plants every two weeks with a water-soluble product.

The Art of the Tabletop Tableau
Well-designed spaces are not just a collection of lovely furniture, artwork, lighting and accents. By Mary Carol Garrity TNS

Marsee makes the coffee service areas beautiful by staging them with lovely dishes and cups, linens and interesting accents.
I think the best interior spaces are those that tell the story of those who live there. Welldesigned spaces are not just a collection of lovely furniture, artwork, lighting and accents. They are those that add a bit of magic, a mirror into the passions and pursuits of the home’s inhabitants. One of the easiest ways to offer snapshots into your life story is through the displays on the tabletops that dot your home. We love tableaux that intrigue a guest enough to pull them in, then reward them with something of wonder or whimsy, a whispered clue about what and who the homeowner cherishes. When I visited my friend Marsee’s townhome, I almost lost my breath when I saw all the vignettes she has so carefully created throughout her home. Every surface held a story to be explored and enjoyed. She is the ultimate nester. One of the things I love most about Marsee’s tabletop tableaux is that each one is unique. Yet, they all are similar enough to create a harmonious flow throughout her home. I asked Marsee to share her secrets for crafting tabletop tableaux. First and foremost, make sure you can use the space. It’s easy to go wild building displays, making them reach high above the surface and spread across its girth. I’ve done this more than once in my life! But in Marsee’s smaller home, she can’t afford to not have every piece of furniture be fully functional. Keep plenty of tabletop open for things like drinks and books. To save space, she decorates with pieces that can double as storage, like baskets and boxes. Repeat common elements to create continuity. Marsee likes to decorate with old books, small picture frames, small wood boxes, urns filled with shells or other treasures, fresh flowers, antique statues, potted plants and candles. Before she creates a display, she spreads everything out that she might want to use. Then, she tries out different combinations until she likes what she sees. Try a tray to hold a display together. Trays are one of my favorite ways to ground a vignette. They collect a group of items and make them work as one. Some of Marsee’s displays start with a tray, but not all of them. See what works best for the items you want to display and the table where they will live. Display only the things you love. One of the cathartic things about downsizing is giving yourself permission to get rid of things you no longer love. Marsee wisely put many of her accents into boxes and held on to them for a while after she moved into her townhome, just in case she changed her mind about anything. She did. Several pieces she thought she no longer wanted, she ended up really missing. She salvaged them from storage, and now they make her smile every day. Make even functional collections beautiful. Marsee is a girl who loves her coffee. You will find a coffee maker stashed in several places in her home, from her kitchen counter to both of the townhome’s bedrooms. But instead of just plunking down a Keurig, Marsee makes the coffee service areas beautiful by staging them with lovely dishes and cups, linens and interesting accents. Take your time. Sometimes Marsee’s displays come together instantly, but most often, she tweaks them for months before she’s fully satisfied. She’ll add something here, take something out there, switch items from one display to the next. I do the same thing, and it makes Dan roll his eyes. I love the idea that my whole home, from one small tabletop design on up, is always evolving, as am I. This column was adapted from Mary Carol Garrity’s blog at www.nellhills.com. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Mr. Richardson: Are there laws governing the responsibilities and obligations of HOA boards, especially those related to limits on raising the monthlyassessments that each resident in the community pays? – Thank you, C.G. Dear C.G.: Most CC&Rs limit boards to the assessment increases allowed by Civil Code Section 5605(b), permitting boards to increase assessments up to 20% annually, and to impose special assessments up to 5% of the HOA’s gross budgeted annual total expenses. These powers must be exercised in an open meeting, and care should be taken to explain to the members the reasons why the action was taken. Civil Code Section 5600 requires the HOA to collect sufficient assessments to “perform its obligations.” – Thanks, Kelly Hello Mr. Richardson: Are there any suggested or mandatory statements board members must enter into the minutes of board meetings when complying with Civil Code §5500 & §5501? – Thank you. E.A. Dear E.A.: Civil Code Section 5500 requires boardsto perform a monthly reviewof the HOA’s operating and reserve accounts current reconciliation, latest bank account statements, and income and expense statements. The board must also review monthly the current year’s actual operating revenues and expenses compared to the current year’s budget, the check register, monthly general ledger, and delinquent assessment receivable reports. Per Civil Code Section 5501, the requirement may be satisfied by the entire board or a board subcommittee consisting of the treasurer and at least one more director. Those reviewing the financial information should confirm in writing or orally in each open board meeting that the review has been completed for the months since
the last meeting. A short confirmation in the minutes, listing the persons who performed the review should be sufficient. – Best, Kelly Dear Mr. Richardson: Our board recently imposed an emergency special assessment, imposing a large per-unit assessment to obtain a multimillion-dollar project loan for reconstruction after years of deferred maintenance. The City issued a written recommended plan rating our units but only requiring that the repair of the “severe” units be made in a timely manner. Many homeowners opted to pay the assessment as a lump sum upfront instead of makingmonthly payments. Our general operating fund, which had been underfunded for years, suddenly had a big increase. It appears that the association collected the lump sum assessment payments and applied it to the general operating fund. They are also drawing money from the project loan at the same time for repairs and reconstruction. Can they use the pre-collected assessment funds on anything they want to or for projects outside the stated purpose of theemergency assessment? – C.N. Dear C.N.: Emergency assessments are permitted by Civil Code Section 5610 when an expense is ordered by court, responds to a newly discovered personal safety concern, or is an extraordinary and unanticipated non-budgeted expense. If the latter basis is invoked (which appears from your question to be the case), the board must pass a written resolution with findings as to the necessity and unforeseen nature of the expense. As to where the funds are deposited, there may be a questionregarding how the assessment funds are accounted for. The collected funds must be used for the stated purpose, or they may not be validemergency assessments. Consult legal counsel before imposing emergency assessments. – Best regards, Kelly

By Ed Del Grande Question: Dear Ed: I’m planning a bathroom remodel down the road and have been looking at bathroom sinks. A term has come up a few times called “living surface.” I’m not familiar with this term, what exactly is a living surface sink? — Linda Answer: Standard bathroom sinks can be made with enameled cast iron, vitreous china and spun glass. These materials are versatile and can also be used in very high-end sinks called “artist edition” bathroom sinks. Like the name says, an artist edition sink can be a showcase plumbing fixture, giving your bathroom a very special look. Now, if you want a one-of-a-kind look for

your bathroom, there are artist edition sinks called living finish or living surface sinks. Living surface sinks are made with metal materials like cast bronze that can develop a unique patina over time. The actual patina surface varies from sink to sink. Bottom line: If you want a bathroom sink with your own special finish, a living surface fixture can be a sink to die for. Save Time in the Kitchen with the Latest Smart Technology Some smart refrigerators feature LCD screens that make it possible to have groceries delivered to your doorstep without leaving the kitchen. Photo courtesy Dreamstime
By Dan DiClerico HomeAdvisor
How much are a few extra minutes worth to you in the kitchen? If you’re racing to get out the door in the morning, maybe to catch the 7:27 train into the city or to get the kids to school, they’re probably worth a lot. Likewise, if the extra minutes are the difference between a perfectly cooked meal and one that’s sat in the oven too long. Security and convenience are the most common benefits of smart home technology. But time management is another major upside, especially in kitchens. No wonder designers are embracing the technology like never before. Indeed, smart home technology, including appliances that can be programmed remotely and voice-controlled faucets and light fixtures, was identified as a key emerging trend in the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s most recent Kitchen & Bath Design Trends report. What’s more, real estate agents are starting to tout smart home technology in their sales listings, alongside popular features like hardwood flooring and outdoor entertainment spaces. So besides making your home more efficient while you live there, smart technology will increase its value when the time comes to sell. Manufacturers have introduced several smart kitchen technologies innovations that emphasize time savings and convenience. Take smart refrigerators. Several models feature built-in cameras that let you check the contents from the supermarket, saving you a trip when you discover you’re out of milk, eggs or some other musthave ingredient. We’re also seeing fridges with embedded LCD screens that make it possible to have groceries delivered to your doorstep without leaving the kitchen;
the screens also let you browse recipes, sync family calendars and more. Smart cooking appliances are another potential time saver. Wi-Fi-controlled ranges, for example, allow you to preheat the oven remotely, so it will be ready to go when you get home with the frozen pizza, or whatever else is on the menu for dinner. So-called scan-to-cook technology is another smart innovation found on new ranges and microwaves; simply scan the barcode on the packaged meal and the appliance takes it from there, setting the correct temperature and cooking time — and even pinging your phone when dinner is ready. As for gadgets, consider investing in a Wi-Fi-connected meat thermometer. The device lets you track internal meat temperatures on your phone, letting you focus on other tasks while dinner is in the oven — and ensuring perfect results every time. Then there’s voice control, a technology that’s finding its way into the kitchen through smart speakers like the Amazon Echo and Google Home. These “digital assistants” can perform an array of cooking-related kitchen tasks. They also enable hands-free control of other kitchen components. For example, you can turn the lights or kitchen faucet on and off by voice command, helpful when your hands are busy with meal prep. The nice thing about today’s smart kitchen technology is that it’s optional. If you, or others in your home, like to do things the old-fashioned way (checking the contents of the fridge before you hit the store, for example, or turning lights on at the wall switch), that’ll work. When you’re ready to take advantage of the intelligence, your smart kitchen will be ready.

How to use unusual color combinations to make your rooms pop Blue and black are paired together in this dining space. Photos courtesy Design Recipes
By Cathy Hobbs
Tribune News Service When it comes to color combinations, you may ask yourself, what’s in and what’s out? Which colors can I put together? And which ones may be taboo or clash? Here are some general guidelines you can follow that can help improve the likelihood of color combination success.
TURQUOISE AND ORANGE Turquoise and orange may sound like an odd pairing, but the color combination can be quite inviting, especially for those looking for a modern, if not hip decor. The blend of turquoise, often viewed as a warm season color, and a more traditional orange, can appear timeless and modern.
E16
COOL VS. WARM COLORS A traditional color wheel can be a wonderful guide and tool if you are confused about which potential colors could blend well when placed near each other. As a general rule of thumb, colors next to each other on the wheel work well together, as do colors that are opposite each other on the wheel. Don’t be afraid to blend colors together, either by pairing warm colors with other warm colors, or by pairing cool and warm colors. Have a special outfit or garment pairing you simply love? Consider trying that same color combination in your home. Often, colors that work in fashion can easily translate into fabrics and wall colors that will work well together in the realm of home decor.

CHARCOAL AND DARK BLUE
This is an instance in which two cool colors work well together. With the shade of blue, don’t be afraid to go with rich and bright tones, as these shades will create an inviting contrast when paired with gray.
SUNDAY, JUNE 27, 2021
Mustard yellow is a gender-neutral accent color that works very well with neutral tones.
The unusual color combination of orange and turquoise creates an interesting and graphic aesthetic in this home office.
A mix of silver and gold helps create a touch of glam in this living space.
Gray and indigo blue may not be the first color combination that comes to mind, but it works in this family room space.
YELLOW AND CHARCOAL Whether it is mustard, lemon yellow or chartreuse, yellow is an innovative, modern and creatively dynamic color when paired with cool colors such as gray, whether it is a light gray or a deeper shade such as a charcoal.
White, gray and tomato red are popular in fashion, but not as popular in home decor. Still, they help make this kitchen shine.
DARK BLUE AND BLACK A few years back, there was a bit of a fashion controversy surrounding this particular color combination, asking the question, can you wear blue with black? The answer according to many fashionistas is yes, and this is a color combination that also often works extremely well when it comes to home decor.
BLACK, WHITE AND RED Black and White is one of the most popular color combinations in both fashion and home decor. Add a pop of red, and you have the recipe for color success. Fun, crisp and clean, this color combination can be used in living spaces or in a kitchen. Understanding the Pros, Cons and Costs of Popular Flooring Materials
The best flooring for your home will depend on your budget and style. Photo courtesy Dreamstime
By HomeAdvisor Choosing flooring can be intimidating. Not only are there dozens of options to choose from, but there are also a number of important factors to consider with each material. This summary of the pros, cons and costs of popular flooring types will help you choose the best option for your home and lifestyle. HARDWOOD You can’t beat the beauty, durability and versatility of hardwood flooring and its engineered counterparts. Not only is hardwood flooring easy to maintain and restore, but it can also be styled and stained to complement every taste. The downside to solid hardwood is it’s highly susceptible to water damage. Also, softer varieties may scratch easily, making them less practical for households with dogs and kids. Perhaps the greatest downside to hardwood flooring is its cost. According to HomeAdvisor’s True Cost Guide, homeowners report spending an average of between $2,545 and $6,480 to install hardwood
E22
flooring. The cost of your hardwood installation project will depend largely on the type of wood you choose and the square footage of your flooring area. The good news is that, in most cases, hardwood flooring will also increase the resale value of your home. CARPET Carpet is comfortable and easy to care for, making it a popular choice for bedrooms and living areas. One benefit of carpet is there are many styles, colors and textures to choose from. Another is it provides increased insulation and helps to minimize sound. Disadvantages of carpet include its vulnerability to stains and water damage (it’s best not to install carpet in bathrooms), as well as its tendency to collect particles known to aggravate allergies and respiratory conditions. The average national cost to install carpeting is $1,595. The cost of your carpet installation project will depend on the quality of the carpet you choose and the square footage of the carpeted area. Another (often overlooked) cost consideration is carpet padding. While installing new padding will add to the overall cost of your project, it will also add to
the comfort and longevity of your floor. CERAMIC AND PORCELAIN TILE Ceramic and porcelain tile are well suited for any space. In fact, with the introduction of wood plank tile (tile that resembles hardwood), they’ve become increasingly popular for use in main living areas. The upside to ceramic and porcelain is most options require little maintenance (apart from regular mopping and occasional repair). The downside is they can be cold on bare feet. Fortunately, the installation of radiant heat below ceramic and porcelain tiles can make them a warmer and more comfortable flooring option. The cost of your tile project will depend on the tile you choose and the square footage of the flooring area. Additional factors, such as subflooring and the inclusion of intricate patterns or designs, may also affect your project cost. The average national cost to install ceramic and porcelain tile flooring is $1,757. NATURAL STONE Natural stone flooring — including granite, marble, travertine and limestone — is as classic and stunning as it comes. Unfortunate-
SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS REAL ESTATE
ly, natural stone is also as high-maintenance as it comes. While extremely durable, natural stone is also both soft and porous, making it susceptible to scratching and staining. But well-maintained, natural stone materials will preserve beautifully for decades. The cost of your natural stone installation will depend on the square footage of your flooring area and the material you choose. Like ceramic tile projects, natural stone projects may require strengthened subflooring and consideration to extras such as intricate patterns or designs. It’s also a good idea to consider the cost of ongoing upkeep when considering natural stone. The average national cost to install natural stone tile flooring is $1,588. SUN PARASOL MANDEVILLAS celebrate fifteen years of stunning tropical flower color
By Norman Winter
Sun Parasol mandevillas like tis one at Jekyll Island GA are stunning thriller plants in mixed containers.
Many years ago, the Sun Parasol mandevilla made its debut in the country and those of us who were present knew this tropical climber was here to stay. What we didn’t know was that this series giving a tropical magic to the garden would one day feature 21 varieties.

1 We could not have imagined a red and white striped selection, like Stars and Stripes, a soft orange like the Sun Parasol Apricot or a Giant Red Emperor with the ability to climb 10 to 15 feet and produce flowers 3 to 5-inches wide. Every time we thought they couldn’t do it, the breeders from Suntory did. Including creating varieties that produced so many flowers that the only way you could count them would be by pulling them off one at a time. Even that would be considered a laborious task. Sun Parasols mandevillas are found in three major groups the Pretty Group, Giant Group, and Original Group. Then there is the Designer Group with currently one selection Designer White, and two individual colors, Sun Parasol Apricot and Sun Parasol Garden Crimson. All are simply dazzling and worth every penny for your garden dollar. At the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, we used Pretty Pink trained on bamboo poles. They gave a cloud-like bouquet of pink towering above pentas, iresine, and Diamond Frost euphorbia. At Jekyll Island Georgia a top tourist destination, they were in large mixed containers and mesmerized visitors with the abundance of flowers. Last year when I saw Sun Parasol Apricot at a shopping center in Columbus, Ga., I was stunned by its color and could not take my eyes off the creative combination that featured it with blue scaevola a complementary partnership that before had been impossible. Sun Parasol Red Emperor in the Giant Group made its debut in 2014 with huge 3 to 5inch deep red flowers produced all summer on a plant that is supercharged. As with most plants I write about, these Sun Parasol mandevilla hybrids need well-drained soil
to survive. This is one of the reasons that these containers and baskets are so healthy and picturesque. If we prepare our landscape soil to make it organicrich, we can duplicate the results in the containers. For best blooming, you will want your mandevilla to receive at least six to eight hours of sunlight a day. Since it is such a vigorous vine and flower producer, it needs small doses of fertilizer every two to three weeks. In containers or baskets that get watered every day fertilization is mandatory. Frequently, dilute applications of a water-soluble fertilizer like a 2020-20 to keep the plants at peak performance. Be sure to maintain moisture during the hot, dry times of the summer. A prolonged period without water may prove fatal to the plant. The Sun Parasol mandevilla is the perfect plant to get you started growing vertically in the garden. Sure, you can grow it on the street side mailbox, but why not also grow up on a Victorian tower, a lamp post, a lattice trellis, or the classic white picket fence. Can you just imagine the look of a Saba or St. Bart’s Caribbean Cottage? We have a lot of hot growing season to go and if your landscape could use some pizzazz from tropical color then get to the garden center quickly for the Sun Parasol mandevilla.

On Gardening:
Celebrate National Pollinator Week by Planting Salvias By Norman Winter June 18-24 was National Pollinator Week in the United States and The Garden Guy is here to encourage you to get on board. I’ve been a bee and I can tell you the job they do is hard work. What it basically boils down to is no pollinators, no food to eat. My experience at being a bee came courtesy of the Texas A & M peach breeding program when I was a graduate student a long time ago. After building makeshift, tent type greenhouses over a few peach trees, we set about removing the male flower parts of each and every flower. The busy as a bee work so famously referred to by the Andrews Sisters came next as I was required to use a tiny brush and apply pollen to each and every female flower. Even with a couple of us bees in the greenhouse, this became a laborious task. Such is the scenario that goes on each and every year with our farmers and ranchers as bees, wasps, butterflies, birds and even bats carry on pollination and thus our plant life, both fruits and seeds come into production. At the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens in Savannah we grew pick-your-own-strawberries and at the end of the field, we had several honey bee hives or boxes. These bees were immensely helpful in producing a crop of strawberries and at the same time yielding a might tasty honey. Of course, once the strawberry season was over it was necessary for us to have plants that were useful to the bees throughout the other 10 months of the year. I think we did a great job as just about every flower we grew, native and non-native bees, butterflies and hummingbirds relished. Believe me, Mother Nature also had our backside to with wild natives in the thickets and forest surrounding the garden. As we still have much of the summer to go and still time to plant all sorts of flowers in our landscape for both beauty and pollinators I would like to suggest sal-
vias also commonly called sages. There are so many great salvias, natives, imports and hybrids that offer much to the landscape. Most produce spikey flowers that stand tall and erect creating excitement in the garden. Every day I watch both hummingbirds and assortment of bees visiting my salvias. Recently I was able to visit the trial gardens at Young’s Plant Farm in Auburn Alabama. There were hundreds of people from all over the country. The busy Interstate Highway was within view and yet with all of that hustle and bustle, there was something magical going on as bees were visiting a new salvia called Big Blue. Big Blue has been in the market in limited quantities this year and is sure to be a hit for years to come. It is the first seed produced Indigo Spires type salvia. This represents one of the horticultural mysteries of life as Pan American Seed is introducing this cross of Salvia farinacea and S. longispicata to the industry in seeds. To this point, it has all been by vegetative propagation. You’ll love Big Blue as it looks so glorious with bountiful blue spikes bringing in the bees and butterflies. But in the meantime, know that salvias whether they be blue, pink or red like the cherry sage, whether they are annuals or perennials, they all will serve a wonderful purpose to not only beautify but sustain bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. I hope you will not only Celebrate National Pollinator Week June 18-24 but each and every day of our long growing season.
