The new ‘IT’ color?

PINK By Cathy Hobbs Pink is one of the hottest colors right now in home decor. What makes pink so popular? In part, its versatility. It can be paired with both bright and dark colors and is considered gender-neutral. Depending on the shade, it can also be used as a neutral color itself.

Soft pink accents including artwork help bring out architectural elements such as ceiling moldings with pink undertones.

Pink-accented artwork creates an interesting contrast in this bedroom.

Looking for ways to incorporate pink? Here are some top tips. 1. Consider using softer shades of pink as a neutral color. Soft shades can serve as foundation colors off which you can build a color palette. 2. Use pink as a gender-neutral choice, especially in social areas such as living rooms. 3. Look for opportunities to incorporate pops of pink via artwork or accessories. 4. Color map. Color mapping is a technique in which you can repeat or “map” color in different parts of a room to create a cohesive palette. 5. Pair shades of pink with dark, smoky colors such as indigo blue, chocolate brown and black. 6. Consider using pink in accent pieces such as toss pillows, throws and bedding. 7. Try using pink as an inspiration color piece if you wish to make a bold statement. 8. Experiment with various shades to create a monochromatic but appealing color palette. 9. Try using different tints, tones and shades in the same space to create a cohesive yet visually vibrant space. 10. Bring large-scale artwork into a space that includes the color pink to help anchor a space using this color. A powder pink pillow serves as a pop of color when paired with black and cream. Pink provides the foundation accent color in this children s bedroom.

Your Handyman

Civility Must Start Somewhere

By Mark Baird

Overloaded Circuits Question: Last night I had way too many electrical things turned on in the bathroom and then the power went out for all the plugs and lights in the bathroom and in a bedroom also. I should have known better but it was cold and I had the bathroom fan on that has a built in heater, all the lights on, an electric space heater in the bedroom running and then I made the mistake of turning on my hair dryer. I tried turning all the circuit breakers off and then back on but no power still. What can I do? Your HandYman: It sounds like your circuit breaker correctly did one of the jobs that it is designed to do, which is to protect your home’s wiring from getting overheated when your appliances are demanding more electricity than the wiring can safely provide. Modern conveniences that use heating elements like space heaters, hair dryers, toasters and coffee makers use relatively large amounts of electrical wattage to convert electricity to heat and without the protection of a circuit breaker, the electrical wires in

your walls could get dangerously hot trying to supply all the needed power when multiple appliances are in use. Most homes will have a circuit breaker box located on an outside wall where the power wires from the telephone poles connect to the house, and sometimes an additional smaller circuit breaker box or sub panel will be located on a wall inside a closet or in the garage. The circuit breaker box should always be approached with caution and should not be opened when standing out in the rain or with wet hands. Usually you can easily see which circuit breaker has “tripped” or turned off by just looking at the position of the switches. However, the circuit breaker needs to be aggressively pushed back into the ON position to reset its internal mechanism. Just turning it back on like you would a wall switch in your home usually is not going to reset the breaker. If the power still does not come back on after resetting all the breakers, or you have any concerns about safely accessing the circuit breaker box, then it is time to call an electrician.

Hand Railings Question: My wife and I are both now in our 80’s and are a little unsteady going up and down the steps to our front porch. The steps and walkway are concrete and we didn’t have any handrails put in when they were originally made, but we sure need them now. Is it possible to have a handrail installed without going through all the expense of putting in new steps? Your HandYman: There are a couple of different possible options for safely installing a handrail on your concrete steps which will give you a sturdy handgrip while going up or down the steps. The easiest would be to have an ornamental iron handrail with posts welded together as a single unit and fastened to the steps with concrete anchors. A metal square of about 4” x 4” is welded to the

bottom of each post, a hole is drilled in each corner of this base plate, and it is screwed down to the cement using expanding concrete anchors. Holes are drilled into the concrete using a rotary impact drill, the concrete anchors are inserted in the holes, and the base of the anchor mushrooms out when the nut on top is tightened, and when done correctly it is more than strong enough to support the post. A decorative metal “skirt” is then slid down the post to conceal the base plate and anchor heads. Usually a handrail is about 34” high and needs to be of a size that allows you to easily grip it when needed. There are many welding and wrought iron shops in Santa Barbara that can both design and install a handrail that will be an attractive addition to the front of your home and provide you with a safe grip.

From presidential debate stages to courtrooms to families to HOAs, civility is becoming so rare, it should be considered endangered. Differences of opinion are no longer allowed — either you agree with me or you are a demon and I will reject any dialogue with you. So, we need some serious rethinking of disagreement and relationship in HOAs. Since we clearly cannot count on our political leaders to model civility, we must start it from the grass roots level. Here are some thoughts to consider regarding disagreement and what it means (or doesn’t). You don’t know or see it all. In the old parable of the blind monks and the elephant, each monk was stationed at a different part of the animal, and each had a distinctly different impression than the others. None were lying, yet each had a different truth. It is entirely possible that others in the HOA know something you don’t and see something you haven’t seen. Allow others to share that divergent view. These people are your neighbors. While it may be satisfying to lash out and say or write awful things about someone you are angry with, you have to see these folks around the HOA. While you can disconnect on social media, you can’t disconnect your neighbors — they are still there. Remember you have to live with these folks and extend courtesy and respect. You’ll make your life (and theirs) less stressful and uncomfortable. Your opinions are not you, and rejection of your argument is not rejection of you. If I think that a remodeled clubhouse is important and you don’t, does that mean one of us is bad? Your opinions about HOA business have no rela-

tion to your worth as an individual, so don’t take offense when someone votes against your point of view. Civility is not the same as agreement, and unanimous votes are unnecessary. Many boards seem to feel that votes must be unanimous. That is legally incorrect and destructive. Disagreement is healthy, and there is nothing disloyal about voting against the majority. Allow for different opinions and dissenting votes — next time it might be you. Reject abhorrent abusive comments, whether written or oral. Raise the bar in your community. Avoid assumptions or projections about others’ intentions. Every four years, our country is split in half, with each side unreasonably thinking the other side’s presidential candidate hates America and wants to destroy it. The fact that someone in your HOA disagrees with you does not mean they want to harm the HOA, but only that they have a different view about the HOA’s needs. Don’t assume someone acts out of spite or bruised ego. Give them a chance to prove good intent. Consider adopting a civility pledge. Ask your HOA leaders to sign it annually and adopt it as HOA policy. The Community Associations Institute created a civility pledge which can be found at www.caionline.org. Adopt it or use it as a template to build your association’s civility policy. HOA living requires healthy interaction among people who don’t always see eye to eye except on the one non-negotiable item — neighborly treatment of neighbors. Insist that civility be paramount at all times and in all places. Isn’t peace in your HOA worth it?

Bedside Manner:

Have Your Clutter and Clean it Too

By Katie Laughridge

With all the chaos and uncertainty in the world today, I have found myself craving simple comforts and trying harder than ever to relax. This means I have been spending more time in my most favorite place... my bed. While my 4 year old might be a little confused as to why I get so excited at 7:30 each evening it’s because I know that by 8 — OK, 8:45, we have lots of books to read and stuffed animals to gather— I can be in my own comfortable cocoon. However, for me, with comfort often comes clutter. My nightstand turns into a neglected library overrun with books I’m too tired to read, and my glasses seem to get lost among the fray of water cups, phone chargers and decorative tchotchkes when I need them the most (though I maintain that my glasses have the ability to move on their own). To keep what I deem necessities within arm’s reach — what’s the point of relaxing if I have to stand up to retrieve something? — and to keep my husband from disappearing under a pile of decorative pillows and design magazines, I knew I had to make some changes. In truth the changes are for me also — I spend so much time enjoying and coveting beautifully curated bedrooms and bedding, and yet I was willing to ruin the flow of my

E8

room with all my beloved stuff! Luckily, I was able to pinpoint some stylish solutions that allow me to have my clutter and keep my space clean, too. First things first, I needed a spot to keep my growing collection of summer reads and magazines, because keeping them in a precariously balanced pile was getting too risky. I like to see my books out and ready to go, even if I’m not yet ready myself to dive in. By using your lamp — chances are you already have one by your bedside — and a stylish jar or container you can create bookends that have a practical use as well. This keeps your books at hand but cleans up your tabletop for more of life’s necessities, like a hydration station. Running around all day I feel like I never drink enough water, and without fail my body realizes this in the middle of the night. I find water bottles to be an eyesore in a bedroom and since I am focusing on aesthetic in my “me” area, I instead like to keep a nice simple glass and coordinating pitcher by my bedside. The right pitcher and glasses set won’t take up much more room than a typical bottle and offers a pretty alternative that won’t seem out of place with the rest of your bedside goodies. Life (and my tabletop) is full of odds and ends, from jewelry to glasses and cellphones,

all of which are very easy to blindly knock over during the night. Say no to a chaotic nightstand by adding trinket trays as an end of the day catch-all. Trinket plates and trays are a great way to add another design element to your bedroom. With countless styles, colors and shapes, it is easy to find one that fits for your needs. Small changes like this have stopped me from overcrowding my tabletops. It’s not realistic to think that all our personal items will be put away and out of sight at all times, and I wouldn’t want that, anyway. I like having my creature comforts around me — I feel it is those touches that create the energy of a “homey” home. A little planning and a few functional accessories show us that a few simple steps can make your table look neat, chic and organized without sacrificing any items or character. Now I just need to figure out how to hide four more pillows on the bed without my husband noticing...do you think he’d pick up on a few more on a foot of the bed bench? Adapted from nellhills.com. Getting Set for

Thanksgiving 2020 By Katie Laughridge Tribune News Service

For many families (mine included), this year’s holiday celebrations are going to look a little different. While I won’t be hosting a grand dinner full of family and friends, I still want to make this Thanksgiving as special and meaningful as possible (because despite all the negative things about the year, we have so much for which to be thankful). One way I know how to do this (besides the copious amounts of food I am planning on prepping) is with decor. Dress it up or dress it down, this year is all about comfort. So whether you are dressing your table to the nines or leaving it to your everyday plates, here are a few of our Thanksgiving looks to inspire you (or to give you your design fix for the week).

Orange spice and autumn leaves For this look we started with our fan-favorite Pumpkin Windowpane throw blanket as a creative table covering. We love using throw blankets on our tables — not only are they multipurpose and easy to throw in the wash, they add coziness to your dining area that is hard to match. My favorite part of this setting is the natural wood touches that are stacked throughout; these elements add so much texture and warmth to the table. This tablescape reminds me of the most perfect days of fall when all of the leaves are brilliant, fiery shades of red, yellow and orange, but have not yet fallen to the ground. Gourd-geous metallic If bright colors aren’t your desire, this look of neutral hues, wicker and metallics might be the answer. This display is the perfect balance of rustic and elegance for a casual but special dinner. Here we used muted

stems, like hops, to add freshness and foliage to the table and play up the wicker accents for a rustic feel. To create balance, we then placed metallic accents at each place setting and used our beautiful metallic wheat table runner to add sophistication to an otherwise somewhat simple display. While our pumpkins are made of fiberglass, this is an easy one to DIY with a bit of gold paint and a few mini pumpkins if that is more your style. It’s a blue Thanksgiving We recently partnered with a local remodeling company, Scovell, to make over a dining room in one of their newly renovated properties. We wanted to do something a little unexpected that would complement their light, bright space. I love pairing white with blue at all times of the year (chinoiserie is timeless!), so we sidestepped traditional fall colors and played up the crisp lines in

the home with soft, neutral linens and textures. I love how the dark wood of the table and chairs adds such a beautiful contrast to the display.

Furniture That Fits By Cathy Hobbs

Have you ever purchased furniture, only to have it delivered and realize it’s not quite the right fit? You are not alone. The reality is most homeowners fail to properly plan when it comes to buying investment furniture. A furniture purchase should not be taken lightly. Instead, the most prudent choice is to select furniture that will last for years if not decades to come. To help ensure your furniture is the best fit for you home, here are some top designer tips. Do: Measure your space before purchasing. Many furniture retailers do not allow returns, especially when it comes to special orders. Create a floor plan. Proper furniture placement will greatly increase a successful outcome. Purchase larger pieces before smaller ones. For example, purchase your bed before your nightstands or your sofa prior to coffee tables. This will help you get a better sense of what will and won’t fit into your space. Consider items such as tables that are expandable. This will go a long way to help ensure an item will properly fit. Pair items of the appropriate size and scale together. When looking for the appropriate size, a general rule of thumb is

that a mirror or artwork should be approximately 2/3 the size of the piece of furniture beneath it. Don’t: Purchase a set. Seldom is purchasing a set successful. Typically it leads to too much furniture in a single space. Be afraid to make unconventional choices. For example, if a typical table doesn’t fit, opt for another seating alternative. Select items that are overly trendy or will go out of style quickly. Overlook the opportunity to potentially expand a space with filler decor. Flush Away Your TP Worries By Patricia Sheridan

Kohler’s Veil intelligent toilet has a $5,300 list price.

E16

Most overseas trips leave you with picture postcard memories, not the nagging desire to buy a new toilet. A trip to Japan several years ago opened my eyes to the wonders of smart toilets — automatic flushing, dryers, heated seats, automated deodorizer and warm water bidetstyle cleaning. And those are just the entrylevel skills. Now more than ever, intelligent toilets seem the smart choice, especially with the scarcity of toilet paper and the worry that any surface can harbor the new coronavirus. They are smart, sleek and sculptural, the ideal combination of form and function. TOTO, a Japanese company, and Wisconsin-based Kohler are the two leading producers of intelligent toilets and washlets (bidet-style toilet seats). Both have seen sales volume and awareness increase because of the global pandemic. “Starting in early March, we saw significant growth in sales. I would say it grew about 10 times more than the previous year,” said Nicole Allis, marketing manager at Kohler. “I would absolutely attribute it to the toilet paper shortage.” William Strang, president of corporate strategy and eCommerce for TOTO USA, has seen it, too. “When COVID hit, we saw a huge groundswell in interest in the washlet seats and fully integrated bidet toilets,” he said. “This pandemic has given people the opportunity to address and be concerned a little bit more about hygiene. Smart toilets are the 20th most searched item on Amazon right now.” It took a pandemic for people to realize just how last century their toilets are. Kohler introduced Numi, its first smart toilet, in 2011. “It’s our flagship product in this category, being very design- and technology-forward,” said Allis. Since then Kohler has introduced Veil and other models; the company has four automated toilets with similar features but they look very different. TOTO introduced the automated toilet in the early 1980s and has since sold 50 million worldwide. “When it was introduced in Japan, it was quickly adopted,” Strang recalled. Allis said: “The American culture has been much slower to adapt the technology. It has taken a global pandemic to get this market to turn around.” Humans in general have a history of dragging their derrieres when it comes to upgrading sanitation. The flush toilet had been around since 1596, but it took the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century to bring it into the mainstream. “Awareness has been an issue in the United States as opposed to Japan, Asia and all of Europe,” noted Strang. “I have had an intelligent toilet in my house for 18 years without incident,” he said.

In Japan, you can find automated, bidetintegrated toilets in rest stops, gas stations and department stores. They are essentially ubiquitous. Why has it taken so long for smart toilets to catch on in the United States? Price may be one reason. Full-service, automated toilets start at just under $3,000. But for $400 or less you can get a bidet seat with automated cleaning power that fits on any standard toilet, transforming it from a cold, dead 19th-century relic to an electronic, automated and serviceoriented utility. Both Kohler and TOTO offer this category. “We try hard to make sure our bidet seats fit a lot of different toilets,” said Allis. “Typically consumers are more concerned about price point than design for a bidet seat.” Kohler’s C3 bidet seats range from $399 to $1,299 and their Puretide bidet seat has a list price of $165. All of Kohler’s intelligent toilets and bidet seats have night lights built into them. Washlets or bidet seat may not do as much as its smart toilets, but its cleaning power means less TP used, saving money in the long run. TOTO’s bidet seats start around $200, but the integrated bidet toilet it is considerably more. TOTO’s top-of-the-line Neorest toilet sells for well over $17,300. It does just about everything except talk to you. “It has a process we call Ewater, which helps rinse the bowl after every use and has an ultraviolet light that shines on the surface. It helps improve the bowl’s ability to rinse and keep itself tidy,” explained Strang. Kohler’s smart toilets range from $3,200 to $13,000, the price tag on the square black Numi 2.0 when it becomes available in the fall. The Numi 2.0 is Alexa-enabled and has a heater in the base to warm your feet as you sit there. “It allows for more voice control in the bathroom,” Allis said. Kohler is finding that people want to streamline their routine. So while you are in the bathroom, you can listen to your Kindle, play music and listen to the news, weather and traffic via Alexa. “Personalization is a really important aspect of why people want the bidet feature on their toilets,” said Allis. “We find they have preferences around water temperature, water pressure and the position of where they get washed. So fully personalizing that experience between front and rear and male and female is why we want the user to take control of the experience. “These products are transformational,” Strang said. “It will change the way you live your life.” Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

Real Estate Q&A:

Can HOA fine me for removing ‘Wear Your Mask’ signs? By Gary M. Singer

Question:

My condo association is fining me for flier removal and vandalism. They are accusing me of removing “Wear Your Mask signs from our building’s main doors. I looked through our condo rules and documents and found nothing about flier removal. The condo president wants to make up some rules under his “emergency powers. Can I be fined for this? — Dennis

Answer:

To start with, you cannot remove signs or notices put up by your association leadership. Period.

If you disagree with how your board of directors is doing their job, you can run for the board at the next election or file a lawsuit, in extreme situations. While it is understandable that you are upset because you feel your association is overstepping their authority, you are doing the same thing when you take the law into your own hands. To put it differently, you cannot try to correct their wrongful actions with your own. Your association can fine you for violations of the rules governing your community if they follow the proper procedure. Your association must appoint a fining committee of people not on or related to those on the board for a fine to be enforceable. These people will give accused residents notice of a committee meeting where the

violations will be reviewed. You may show up and argue your case, but, like any other hearing, the ultimate decision rests with the committee. If the committee decides against you, it will levy a fine. If you do not pay this fine, you can lose certain privileges in your community. Your association can also enforce the fine in court and get a judgment against you. If your association correctly followed the procedures, it would be difficult to convince a judge that the penalty was wrong. To make matters worse, you may need to reimburse the association for their legal costs. Generally, though, these fines do not give your association lien rights to foreclose on your home.

Conundrum on coleus

By Norman Winter As if 2020 couldn’t get more challenging, I have now run head on into a conundrum on coleus or to put it more succinctly a perplexity on pinching. First a little jaunt into my history with coleus. I have been part of trials involving coleus for about 25 years starting back when I was in the Texas A&M system as Tarrant County extension horticulturist in Fort Worth. At the time we were evaluating coleus for their sun tolerance. In all the years, we were also keeping a close watchful eye on when they bloomed. We wanted foliage, not blooms, and I suppose that holds true today. Our grandparents grew coleus that was seed produced and therefore by its nature, there was pretty foliage, not all that much sun tolerance and its life ended abruptly with flowers followed by seed. Once the breeders got to work and coupled with innovative vegetative propagation our coleus world exploded. We now have coleus that have become true landscape assets lasting

E20

the entire growing season. I am sitting in Columbus, Georgia, in early November and still shooting photos of ColorBlaze Wicked Hot and ColorBlaze Lime Time. All coleuses will eventually bloom; it just doesn’t mean the end of its life now. As horticulturists we teach gardeners to simply pinch the blooms off once they start to occur. This will keep those gorgeous leaves coming. This year I told my bride Jan that I was going to leave a few flowers on one clump of my ColorBlaze Wicked Hot that started sending up a few blue blooms in late September. They are pretty spikes of blooms but also what you may have never known or considered, is that they are members of the Lamiaceae or Mint family just like salvias. You can see where I am headed. In early October my ruby-throated hummingbirds started making the ColorBlaze Wicked Hot part of the daily meal plan. These hummingbirds fattening up for the long trip to the tropics and flying 23 hours across the Gulf of Mexico needed all-of the nourishment they could

get. They were also hitting on the Luscious lantanas, Rockin salvias, Vermillion cuphea, and Mexican sunflowers. Color Blaze Wicked Hot made its debut this year and I found myself asking did we need another orange coleus? After all the ColorBlaze series by Proven Winners already had Sedona Sunset, which is so incredibly wonderful and if you have ever been to Sedona, Arizona you’ll agree it is perfectly named. ColorBlaze Wicked Hot is different with its serrated margins and it excels in sun or shade. It can reach 40 inches in height with a spread to about 36 inches. In other words, it is vigorous but don’t let that scare you, it is easily pinched to maintain your desired shape. What I love about it is that it reminds me of glowing embers in a campfire. At The Garden Guy’s house, I have used it in a lot of partnerships. It is incredible with Illusion Emerald Lace ornamental sweet potatoes and with Luscious Royale Cosmo lantana where the coleus foliage creates a picturesque backdrop for

SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS REAL ESTATE

beautiful feeding butterflies. But the coleus conundrum or pinching perplexity now exists. I showed my photos to some greenhouse producers asking the question, do coleus blooms have a place in the landscape. The answer from the East Coast was they do now. It was a similar response from coastal Louisiana. There will be 15 selections to choose from in the ColorBlaze series in 2021 including the new ColorBlaze Royale Pineapple which is chartreuse with hints of burgundy and bronze. I promise there will be at least one to fit your needs. But they come with a warning, you may be tempted to leave a few blooms if, and when they show. If you do, the hummingbirds, bees and butterflies will thank you! No matter what model you own, there are some basic safety tips you can, and should, practice to avoid all generator hazards. Photo courtesy Dreamstime/TNS

How to Use a Generator Without Setting Your House on Fire or Electrocuting Yourself By Grace Dickinson Power outages are frustrating enough. Add in a generator catastrophe, and, well ... boom. Portable generators provide a convenient backup supply of electricity when the grid goes down. But use one incorrectly, and the hazards are high. Among them are carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical shocks and electrocution, and fires. Any one of these can lead to death. But carbon monoxide exposure may be your biggest enemy. According to data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 900 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning from portable generators between 2005 and 2017, and an estimated 15,400 people required emergency-room visits. Yes, it’s grim. But newer portable generators are being designed with built-in sensors to prevent carbon monoxide tragedies. When dangerous levels are detected, an automatic shutdown is triggered.

E22

In even better news, no matter what model you own, there are some basic safety tips you can, and should, practice to avoid all generator hazards. Here’s how to use your generator safely: Never use a generator indoors. There’s a reason carbon monoxide is often called the “silent killer.” The poisonous gas is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it easy to build up inside your home without warning. And as a byproduct of generators, this means you should never use your generator indoors, or in any enclosed spaces, including garages, crawl spaces, and basements. Opening doors and windows and using fans do not make it safe. Always place your generator at least 20 feet from your home, positioned away from all doors, windows and vents. Make sure there is at least three to four feet of clear space on all sides and above the generator to ensure adequate ventilation, advises the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Then, as a precautionary step, the Ameri-

can Red Cross encourages you to install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and in any outside sleeping areas. These are designed to provide early warnings of potential gas accumulation. Wait until the storm is over. If it’s raining outside, keep your generator powered off. Both the generator and your hands should be dry when operating to avoid electrocution. To help keep the area dry and ventilated, create a “canopy-like structure” over the generator, says the American Red Cross, using a tarp held up by poles. You can also find manufactured generator coverings online, from brands like GenTent and IGAN. Use a transfer switch. Hire an electrician to install a transfer switch, a heavy-duty cable that connects the generator to your circuit panel. This allows you to power devices without the use of extension cords, and minimizes the likelihood of your electronics frying. It also enhances safety. A properly installed transfer switch decreases risk of electrical shock, power overloading, and fires. It also keeps others safe. Plugging the generator straight into a wall outlet is known as “backfeeding,” which, according to OSHA, can energize wiring systems across great distances and put utility workers, your neighbors, and your household at risk of electrocution. Quality extension cords matter. If you plan to plug an electrical appliance directly into the generator, use a heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cord. Choose one that’s rated (in watts or amps) at least equal

SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS REAL ESTATE

to the sum of the connected appliance loads, says the American Red Cross. Never use a cord that’s cut, frayed, or otherwise damaged. And avoid overloading the generator, which can lead to overheating, creating a fire hazard and/or generator failure. You may need to stagger when you’re using various appliances. (Not sure what size generator to purchase? Check out the American Red Cross’s sizing guide at https://rdcrss.org/30De1dL.) Cool, then refuel. Generators build up heat while running. Accidentally spill generator fuel, like gasoline or kerosene, onto the engine, and it’s easy for a fire to ignite. Before refueling, always shut down the generator first, and allow it to cool. Check the generator’s label or instructions to see what type of fuel to use. Think about how you’re storing your fuel. Just as you don’t want your generator indoors, you don’t want your fuel inside either. Store fuel in an approved safety can in a shed or other protected area, away from fuel-burning appliances. That, of course, means you should store it away from your generator. Take it for a test run. Before an emergency, try out your generator to make sure it’s operating smoothly. Likely you’ll be in a calmer state at this point should something need to be adjusted or fixed. One thing to consider: Is there a power overload? Some machines draw three times more power in their first few seconds of startup. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC
