‘One truck and a dream’ Movegreen continues moving forward even in the midst of a pandemic

RAFAEL MALDONADO / NEWS-PRESS

Thanks to a PPP loan of $5 to $10 million to the professional group that employs Sansum Clinic healthcare providers, the clinic can now keep employees on the payroll and continue to provide medical care for the community.

Started in 2007 with just one truck, Movegreen now owns a fleet of 20 service vehicles, 20,000 storage units and serves five counties across California.

While some companies are trying their best to simply stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic, others are making the most of their situation and even taking some big risks. Take Movegreen, for example. The award-winning ecofriendly moving and storage company based in Santa Barbara announced on Thursday that they acquired two storing and moving powerhouses, La Habra Relocations and Watford Moving and Storage. Located in Orange County and Santa Clarita, respectively, the acquisition of these two locations allows Movegreen to move deeper into the Southern California market. “This is significant growth for us,” Erik Haney, CEO and founder of Movegreen, told the News-Press. “Within the moving business, 20 to 30 miles is kind of your maximum radius where you can be serviceable and efficient for customers. So now with our locations we can really provide service to anyone from Solvang to Laguna Beach.” Mr. Haney began Movegreen in 2007 and had a simple — or difficult depending on how you look at it — goal: to reinvent the moving and storage business in a more “socially responsible way.” “We wanted to minimize the impact on our environment … that really was the foundation,” Mr. Haney said. “It started here in Santa Barbara and I like to say it started with one truck and a dream.” What once started with one truck and dream has since evolved to business that has grown tremendously in just 13 years.

Movegreen has a number of hybrid vehicles to try to minimize its impact on the environment, including a hybrid diesel truck.

Now, Movegreen has a fleet of 20 vans and service vehicles, serves five counties and owns 22,000 storage units along the South Coast. It has seen a 30% increase in revenue since 2017 and a 40% growth in personnel and in the near future, the company plans to expand into a 33,000 square foot warehouse in Oxnard. “It feels amazing. It’s a lot of hard work over the years but it’s pretty crazy to imagine,” Mr. Haney said. “We really put customer service as number one on our list and going above and beyond anytime we possibly can to do right by the customer to exceed their expectations seems to really

At least $1 million in Paycheck Protection Program funding was awarded to more than 70 businesses and nonprofits in southern Santa Barbara County to keep workers on the payroll. The forgivable loans were presented in ranges of $1 to $2 million, $2 to $5 million and $5 to $10 million in federal data released earlier this week. The PPP program helped California’s 24th congressional

district, which includes all of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties and part of Ventura County, retain more than 158,114 total jobs and the assistance totaled over $1.16 billion, according to a statement released by Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Santa Barbara. “This data illustrates how federal resources provided by the CARES Act are being used to preserve jobs and provide businesses on the Central Coast with a safety net as we grapple

be paying off and it’s great.” All of Movegreens trucks have GPS monitors to track their locations. One day, Mr. Haney was looking at those GPS monitors and saw his trucks all across the state of California, from San Francisco to San Diego. “It was a really proud moment for me for sure. I have had staff with me since the beginning so to see that was a pretty surreal moment, but you know we have plans to keep growing and we’re not done yet,” Mr. Haney said. Of course, while the company has seen growth over the past 13 years, it has stayed true to its mission of trying to help the environment. At the company’s inception, it

partnered with a company called Trees for the Future. Through the partnership, Movegreen has a “10-tree program,” which means the company will plant 10 trees for every move made. Through the partnership, Movegreen has helped plant more 100,000 trees. With the quick advancement of technology as well, Movegreen is very close to having a fully digital inventory system, cutting down on the use of paper. Movegreen also has five hybrid vehicles and one hybrid diesel truck and hopes to add a few more over the next couple of years. “We are just constantly trying Please see MOVEGREEN on A8

ith their line drawings of two iconic local landmarks, the mission and the courthouse, new COVID-19 face masks are getting a lot of attention in the Santa Barbara area. Business owner Sasha Ablitt, artist David J. Diamant and Earl Arnold combined their expertise to design them. The original artwork was created by Mr. Diamant, and the water-based screen printing was hand-pulled by Mr. Arnold, owner of Table Salt Screen Printing. Ms. Ablitt, who owns Ablitt’s Fine Cleaners & Tailors, founded years ago by her father, originated the idea along with several members of her staff. “When everything closed down in March, our business dropped 70 percent, so I decided to make masks with the help of my tailors Maribel Ibarra, Margarita Miguel and Elsa Sapien,” said Ms. Ablitt. “Because environmentalism is a big part of everything I do, we were repurposing clothing and bed linens and other items that had never been picked up.

FYI For more information about the SBLocal Mask Project, call 805-963-6677 or email sasha@ablitts.com.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to divert the material from the landfill.” As the word got out, clients began to donate material for the project. “We used only natural material, like cotton, which is easier for breathing. I didn’t want to use polyester,” said Ms. Ablitt. “We knew nothing about making masks when we began, but we played around with it. Everyone seemed to want something different — different colors, different designs.” As business increased and people were being asked to wear masks all the time, Ms. Ablitt decided to make masks that would involve other local businesses who were having problems staying afloat. “I wanted to make them fun, too. I reached out to local artists to come up with ideas and partner with us,” said Ms. Ablitt. “David was super excited. He specializes in line drawings of Santa Barbara scenes.”

“I grew up in Santa Barbara, left for 10 years and came back,” said Mr. Diamant. “When I came back, I saw my hometown with fresh eyes. I had the old memories and was now making new ones — the courthouse, the mission, the harbor, the Arlington, Paradise Cafe, etc.” Now dubbed the SBLocal Mask Project, the coverings are sold in two colors, black and blue, with drawings of the landmarks in white. “Currently we have the mission and courthouse masks available. We are working on two new designs at the moment that should be available in a few weeks,” said Ms. Ablitt. “All are made of natural material, with water-based ink as opposed to that nasty plastic type of ink. The four ties have been designed for your ultimate comfort and can be worn either behind the ears or by tying behind the neck and on top of the head.” The masks, which cost $25 plus tax, are machine washable. “They will last longer if handwashed and air-dried, and the CDC recommends daily washing,” she added. email: mmcmahon@newspress. com

favoritism, tell her she’s absolutely right and also why you no longer felt inclined to shell out to someone who didn’t think your generosity was worth acknowledging. It’s the truth. Dear Abby: I am 53 and constantly worry about the future. Because my husband has had to change jobs for various reasons, we have no money fund for retirement, and it isn’t offered at his current job. I worry so much about the future that it’s keeping me from enjoying the present. How can I stop worrying like this so I can enjoy the present? Talking to a doctor is not an option as money is very tight. — Worrying Too Much Dear Worrying: You didn’t mention whether you are currently employed. If you aren’t, a way to fix your problem might be to start thinking about your own earning capacity and find a job so you can build a retirement fund. It’s never too late to start.

SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS

Horoscope.com Saturday, July 11, 2020

ARIES — It may be difficult to stay grounded today with all the information flying around and the emotions roiling in your heart. Try not to take things too seriously, Aries. This is the key to maintaining a level head throughout the day. Do things with passion and take care of any detective work that needs to be done. There are important facts coming to you from unexpected sources. TAURUS — You may get pushed around by two very powerful camps today, Taurus. Since you’re the kind, diplomatic, and sensitive one, you make the perfect target for more abrasive and opinionated people. You may want to side with the cold, hard facts presented to you, although there’s a great deal of emotional power stirring the pot. Things may not be as clear as they seem at first glance. GEMINI — You’re apt to trend a bit more on the wild side today, Gemini. There’s a wave of powerful energy working to give strength to your ego and self-confidence. Use this boost to the best of your ability. You’ll need it. There is a strong, fact-oriented force working to combat your aims. You’ll find that it’s equally powerful and stubborn. Cut through the fantasy and uncover the truth. CANCER — A good tactic for you today would be to convert your fears into motivation for positive action. There’s a great deal of energy at your disposal, Cancer, so don’t waste it. Be aware that this is one of those times in which the smallest comment or insult could set off a huge chain reaction of misinformation or battles. People are quite emotionally charged, so be careful where you step. LEO — You’re likely to face conflicting reports today, Leo. Information may be tainted with emotion, so be careful about going with the choice that shouts the loudest. You may be getting secretly pigeonholed into a place where you don’t want to be. Heed the internal warnings you receive. This is a good day to do things passionately. Take care of any detective work that needs doing. VIRGO — You may be seduced by fantastic promises that offer wonderful things and fanciful rewards. But beware of anything with lots of bells and whistles, Virgo. There may be a great deal of talk but not much to substantiate such wonderful claims. Don’t be surprised if people with intense emotions are stepping up to put in their two cents about how you should run your life. Don’t forget +*#!2 +1$)"$ who is boss.

LIBRA — People are apt to be quite emotional when it comes to the appearance they wish to project today, Libra, so be careful where you step. It’s your job to see through the trendy makeup and fashion that hide the true personalities of the people who insist on wearing these masks. The key is not to be fooled by those who hide behind a facade built more by society than by themselves. SCORPIO — Scorpio, don’t be surprised if some of your fantasies and dreams are put on trial today by a harsh force that cuts right to the truth of the matter. People are apt to be extra passionate about things. Most aren’t going to be impressed with Disney-esque plans. You can try your normal approach of simply ramming ahead with your plans, but a better approach might be to be more strategic. SAGITTARIUS — You’ve reached an emotionally climactic point right now, Sagittarius, and you could find some harsh opposition coming at you for no apparent reason. There is a stubborn, strong, oppressive force today, and you should be aware that the more rigid your viewpoint, the harder it will be for any resolution at all. Compromise is an essential virtue of the day. CAPRICORN — Be careful not to be too cavalier today, Capricorn. It would be wise to adopt a more serious tone than you normally would. You might be inclined to be careless with your words, but people are going to take you very literally. Make sure you say things that you actually mean. Your attention to fashion and pop culture may conflict with a force that’s asking you to focus on things of deeper spiritual value. AQUARIUS — You have the sensitivity to pick up on what’s going on in every situation today, Aquarius. What you’re apt to find are powerful emotions coming into conflict with extremely strong opinions. Welcome to the battle between the head and the heart. On this day you may be more apt to side with the heart. Realize that this arena is quite heated and that the forces at work are extremely stubborn. PISCES — The fantasy world that you’ve built for yourself is a pleasure to behold, Pisces. People frolic in your world and have a grand time. Your presence delights people with pleasure. Today, however, this world may be threatened by harsh realities coming in the form of electronic information. This force is powerful and apt to be quite erratic and spontaneous. Be prepared to stand your ground.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

‘If Macy’s and Brooks Brothers can’t stay open, who can?’ closing

Continued from Page A1 walk-in customers due to COVID-19 spikes. The State Street location is one of eight stores closing in California. The Apple Store will be closing its doors on July 13 and there is no date set for a reopening. According to a letter found in front of the Apple Store, online orders and Genius Support can still be handled in store, however, it is by appointment only and through July 12. The amount of people at one time will be limited for social distancing reasons and face coverings will be required to enter, though they will also be provided for customers if needed. Temperature checks will also be required and hand sanitizers will be located throughout. Appointments can be made at Apple. com or through the Apple Store app on smart phones. Sur La Table, located at 821 State St., has also announced it is closing its doors and will do so permanently. The Seattle-based kitchenware company filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday, with CEO Jason Goldberger stating in a news release, “This sale process will result in a revitalized Sur La Table, positioned to thrive in a post COVID-19 retail environment. Registrar of Voters SANTA BARBARA COUNTY Election to be held November 3, 2020

Continued from Page A1 with economic uncertainty caused by COVID-19, Rep. Carbajal said in the statement. Only two companies received the biggest loans of $5 to $10 million: Sansum Clinic and Sientra, Inc. With the PPP funding, Sansum Clinic was able to retain 215 jobs and Sientra was able to retain 321. Sansum Clinic is the oldest and largest nonprofit outpatient healthcare provider on the Central Coast. “The professional group that employs Sansum Clinic physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other ancillary providers received it so they did not have to lay off providers, make them available to take care of the community, Dr. Kurt Ransohoff, Sansum Clinic CEO and chief medical officer, told the News-Press. The Channel Islands Young Men’s Christian Association retained 500 jobs, the highest amount out of the big loans in the Santa Barbara area. It received a loan of $2 to $5 million. Also among those that received funding from $2 to $5 million included: Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics; Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara County, Inc.; Santa Barbara Graduate School Inc.; and engineering and technology corporations such as Wyatt Technology Corporation, Novacoast Inc. and more. Smaller businesses receiving PPP loans of $1 to $2 million included: Blenders in the Grass; Santa Barbara Zoological Foundation; Santa Barbara Shellfish Co. Inc.; Rusty’s Pizza Parlors, Inc.; Planned Parenthood California Central Coast; Child Abuse Listening Mediation; and American Indian Health & Services. The Small Business Administration will forgive the loans if all employee retention criteria are met and funds are used for eligible expenses.

Community college board moves all fall sports to spring semester By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

The fall sports seasons for Santa Barbara City College and Allan Hancock College are being moved to the spring semester of 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, school officials announced. The California Community College Athletic Association’s Board of Directors reported that it “overwhelmingly approved” implementation of its spring contingency plan on Thursday. The decision affects 110 colleges and approximately 24,000 student-athletes. The California Interscholastic Federation state office is expected to announce its own plans for the high school sports season on July 20, with a postponement of fall competition until 2021 among the reported options. “We were prepared for this decision and I really do believe this is in the best interest of everyone’s health and safety,” said Rocco Constantino, SBCC’s director of athletics. “We have been planning for months, anticipating many different scenarios and now that we know the CCCAA’s plan, we can start to nail down some of the logistics. “It’ll be difficult to pull off, but I have confidence our coaches and staff will rise to the occasion to give our athletes the great academic and athletic experience they expect when attending SBCC.” The decision affects seven Vaquero teams which compete in the fall — football, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s golf — as well as men’s and women’s basketball. SBCC’s football scrimmage at Ventura College had been scheduled for Aug. 22. The

Vaqueros were to open their regular season at Hancock on Sept. 5. The CCCAA plan calls for the spring semester to be divided into two sections. The sports that traditionally compete in the fall will have a window for regular-season practice and competition between Jan. 18 and April 6. The traditional spring sports will have a window from March 27 through June 12 for practice and games. The plan also allows for a one-week regional tournament for each sport. State championships, however, will not be conducted in any sport this year. “There were times that we had hope we may have been able to host some sports in the fall, but the trends surrounding the virus did not continue in a right direction,” Mr. Constantino said. “Although competition will not happen this fall, we have very valuable Physical Education classes that we can offer our student-athletes. “We emphasize a holistic approach to educating our students and just because we aren’t competing in the fall doesn’t mean we can’t help them develop in other ways. We have an excellent, creative staff and I’m looking forward to working through this challenge with them.” The CCCAA board said its conventional plan, which would’ve kept a traditional calendar for all sports except men’s and women’s basketball, was reliant on California being in Phase 4 of its reopening by July 17. Since that condition now appears impossible, the board’s COVID-19 Work Group recommended that the CCCAA go ahead with its contingency plan. “I know I speak for the entire CCCAA board that moving fall athletics to spring 2021 is a huge disappointment,” said board chair Dr.

Erika Endrijonas. “However, the need to keep our student-athletes and the amazing coaches and athletic trainers who work with them safe was simply the only option available with the virus spiraling out of control across the state.” The CCCAA’s original contingency plan had men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s golf competing in the fall. Those sports, however, will now start practice in midJanuary and begin competition in February along with basketball, football, soccer, women’s volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Badminton, baseball, beach volleyball, men’s golf, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and men’s volleyball are scheduled to start practice in late March and begin competition on April 10. All sports will have a 30% reduction in the maximum number of contests or competition. Postseason formats will be announced at a later date. “We were very hopeful that we could go forth with the conventional plan,” said Jennifer Cardone, the CCCAA’s interim executive director. “It’s the closest to what everyone is used to and provides for the least disruption to our student-athletes and colleges. “Unfortunately, California’s reopening progress has slowed, and it’s become apparent that we would not be in position to put it into action on July 17. “The health and safety of our studentathletes, coaches and staffs are our top priorities. While the Contingency Plan has the most drastic changes, it’s also the one that provides us the best opportunity to return to competition.” email: mpatton@newspress.com

Oil spill near Santa Maria SANTA MARIA — An estimated five barrels of crude oil spilled Friday afternoon at the Las Flores facility operated by HVI Cat Canyon in the 6100 block of Dominion Road near Santa Maria, authorities said. The spill was reported around 1:15 p.m. Santa Barbara County Fire Department crews responded to the area and

found an oil storage tank that had leaked the crude oil. Crews on scene were able to contain the spill and no wildlife or waterways were impacted, said Capt. Daniel Bertucelli, fire spokesman. The spill was considered static as of Friday afternoon, while oil workers were working to clean the area. Oil and gas investigators and inspectors were called to the scene. — Mitchell White

to adapt and add new things into our repertoire,” Mr. Haney said. The decision to acquire La Habra Relocations and Watford Moving and Storage seemed easy at the onset, but with COVID-19 in the front of everyone’s mind, there was some hesitation. Specifically with Watford, the close of escrow on that acquisition was on April 2, just a couple weeks after the announcement of sheltering in place across the United States. “It was a very trying time to decide whether we were going forward or back out of the deal just based on all the news and the pandemic that was transpiring as we were closing up the deal,” Mr. Haney said. Still, Mr. Haney decided to move forward. While the location is only running at about 50% of what they expected, he still believes it was the right decision. “We believed that it was such a great strategic move for Movegreen moving forward that we decided to move forward with the acquisition,” Mr. Haney said. And it has paid off, with June marking Movegreen’s most successful month as a company. A lot of that, Mr. Haney believes, is due to the fact that the housing market in the Central Coast, specifically Santa Barbara, is thriving. “A lot of people I believe from the Los Angeles and San Francisco area are moving into Santa Barbara, because they learned that they can work remotely,” Mr. Haney said. Still, Mr. Haney admitted that

it feels odd to be doing relatively well in a time where many businesses are struggling. “It really does feel weird to think about how we have been able to stay on par. It’s something that it’s even hard to even really talk about in the current environment, but we try to help people and stay busy making sure

we are helping our customers,” Mr. Haney said. As Movegreen continues moving forward, hopefully to an even brighter future, Mr. Haney hopes that his company, which has done things the right way, can serve as a small glimmer of hope during these times. “There’s a lot of negativity out

A local pet owner surrendered ownership of their dog and cat after contracting the coronavirus.

Owner surrenders pets due to COVID-19 SANTA BARBARA — A local pet owner recently surrendered ownership of their cat and dog after contracting the coronavirus, police said. On July 7, a Santa Barbara Police Department Animal Control officer went to the residence of a COVID patient who is currently in the hospital. The owner called police over concerns for the animals’ well being and requested to surrender ownership due to the seriousness of their illness, said Capt. Marylinda Arroyo, police spokeswoman. The animals have been placed in quarantine for at least 14 days, with animal care providers carefully monitoring them, Capt. Arroyo said. Pet owners are encouraged to follow recommendations from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, which include treating pets as they would human family members to protect them from possible infection. Pet owners are recommended to limit their pet’s interaction with people outside their household and to not put face coverings on their pets. “There is no evidence that the virus can spread to people from the skin, fur, or hair of pets. Do not wipe or bathe your pet with chemical disinfectants, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or any other products not approved for animal use,” officials said. “Talk to your veterinarian if your pet gets sick or if you have any concerns about your pet’s health.” -- Mitchell White
