Westerlay Orchids donating to Carp Education Foundation By JORGE MERCADO NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Donating during normal times is important, but even in the middle of a pandemic, giving what you can is one way to help a local community thrive. Westerlay Orchids is doing just that, as the wholesale florist company will be donating 100% of next week’s retail proceeds

to the Carpinteria Education Foundation. This is the third straight year Westerlay is donating to the foundation, having raised more than $18,000 for the group in 2019. “It’s harder to donate (this year) but it’s also more important and we are just going to do it,” Toine Overgaag, owner of Westerlay Please see DONATION on A10

Joni Maiden, the co-chair of the Santa Barbara County Census 2020 Complete Count Committee, said the committee has explored numerous new ways to reach out and encourage people to fill out the census, including bilingual advertising campaigns and car and bicycle caravans.

undercount of just 5% is a loss of $430 million back into the community, and Santa Barbara County is sitting at around 30% of an undercount. “The census is programmed for nutrition, schooling, child

care, health care, infrastructure, emergency operation services and all those programs that we’re seeing how needed they are during this COVID event, Ms. Maiden said. “We aren’t just affecting our future; we are

determining our kids’ future for the next 10 years. The count ends in September, but all the data won’t be final or presented until March 2021. email: gmccormick@newspress.com

public on responding and reach out to those who have yet to respond. “For the past two years, we approached different entities letting people know the census is safe, easy and important, Donald Bendz, a U.S. Census Bureau spokesperson, told the NewsPress. He said when it’s broken down to people that it’s safe and the information cannot be shared or used against them; it’s easy to respond online, over the phone or by mail; and it’s important because of the hundreds of billions of dollars sent back into the communities, people typically come around and respond. However, census workers still struggle to reach the “Hard To Count populations — unemployed, low-income persons, limited and non-English speakers, people living in crowded and/ or rented units, multi-unit structures, persons who don’t live in traditional housing, children age 0 to 5 and seniors, among others. In addition, the Census Bureau must count the homeless populations in a completely different and separate operation called “service-based enumeration. From Sept. 22 through Sept. 24, workers will contact soup kitchens, homeless shelters and food banks in Santa Barbara County to find and count people experiencing homelessness in all the “transitory locations. “Our partners have identified them (transitory locations), and they will give us a big list, telling us to go under this bridge, go to this intersection, go to this park, Mr. Bendz said. “They will do a visual count based on the information our partners get. It’s a massive undertaking, and it takes a lot of coordination. The census spokesperson added that all census takers knocking on doors and surveying in public are trained with social distancing, wear face masks and use hand sanitizer. He also mentioned that census taking is a low-risk operation and can easily be done beyond the six-foot guideline. According to Mr. Bendz, Santa Barbara County is doing well with its self-response rate, exceeding the state and national average. The county’s census workers are also ahead of schedule to get everyone counted by Sept. 30. However, he said there’s a lot of work that needs to be done. An interactive map tool on the 2020 Census website displays the areas in Santa Barbara that have sent in more or less responses. According to the city’s specific graph, the downtown area close to the coastline, along with the coastal area in Montecito, are the sections with the lowest selfresponse rates. Joni Maiden is the cochair of the Santa Barbara County Census 2020 Complete Count Committee, which is a combination of individuals in local government, private agencies and nonprofits doing outreach in the communities they serve as trusted messengers already. The committee has explored new ways of outreach, including car caravans and bicycle caravans through communities. It also launched a Spanish-language print, TV, radio and digital advertising campaign. “We still have more time. It’s just a matter of trying to keep agile and figure out where our community members are, she told the News-Press. She pointed out that an

he elderly client’s condition and disabilities proved to be such a challenge that caregivers stopped working with her. Then came Rafael Benavides. The local nurse succeeded in providing her with award-winning care. Mr. Benavides recently became the first Californian in eight years to be named BrightStar’s regional West Caregiver of the Year. During a surprise reveal on Aug. 20 at BrightStar Care Santa Barbara’s office, Mr. Benavides

was honored with the award after being nominated by his client’s spouse for making a significant difference in her life. (BrightStar is a home care business.) According to Sharon Perez, owner and director of operations of BrightStar Santa Barbara, Mr. Benavides’ client is diagnosed with a number of physical disabilities as well as Addison’s disease and multiple personality disorder. Mr. Benavides said because of the client’s previous trauma and disabilities, his first task was to gain her trust. “It was very difficult, it was very difficult. But I think the most important thing is that you need

the trust,” he told that.” the News-Press. struggling with understanding why she needed to do certain things, Mr. Benavides said. However, since he has worked with her, she has been receiving her medications “by the book” and has since become a very independent person. Mr. Benavides said when he isn’t taking care of his main client, he works at other medical facilities when they are short of nurses. He takes care of anywhere between 80 and 100 patients at a time. He said his favorite part about his job is the way it makes his heart feel when he is able to help people. “I feel to myself when I do something right, when I produce

positive changes, I feel like I’m doing my job,” Mr. Benavides said. When he isn’t working, Mr. Benavides said he enjoys spending time with his family and riding on his motorcycle, which he sometimes takes to and from work. Due to his countless hours of caring for his patient 24/7 as well as the empathy he shares towards others, Mr. Benavides was selected from hundreds of nominees for BrightStar’s prestigious award. He will be honored virtually this year at the BrightStar owners convention, which is an online event due to COVID-19. email: bmackley@newspress.com

At left, Rafael Benavides stands between the owners of BrightStar Santa Barbara — Michael and Sharon Perez — after receiving his awards on Aug. 20. “It’s above and beyond what you were asked to do,” Mrs. Perez said. “So we’re happy to be able to celebrate this as a whole team.” At right, “I feel to myself when I do something right, when I produce positive changes, I feel like I’m doing my job,” Mr. Benavides said.

Channelkeeper Blue Water Ball goes virtual this year By GRAYCE MCCORMICK NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT

Santa Barbara Channelkeeper’s annual Blue Water Ball will set sail virtually this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The organization’s 20th Annual Blue Water Ball - Second Sail will take place online at 5 p.m. Sept. 9. The free event will feature Geoff Green, the CEO of the City College Foundation, as master of ceremonies, and a few words from Channelkeeper executive director Kira Redmond. That will kick off the silent auction and raffle, which will be open for online bidding from Sept. 9 through Sept. 23. The Blue Water Ball is the most crucial fundraiser for the nonprofit, providing volunteers with the ability to monitor

waterway health, advocate for clean water and environmental justice, hold polluters accountable and educate the next generation of environmental stewards. The money raised from the event accounts for 25% of the organization’s budget for 2020. “This (COVID-19) is totally new for everybody. We’re all experiencing it together,” Debra McCarty, the development director for Channelkeeper, told the NewsPress. “But none of our work in our mission has stopped or changed. We are still here to protect the Santa Barbara Channel.” The silent auction and raffle will feature many items, such as vacations, ocean adventures, wetsuits donated by Patagonia, outdoor gear, local art, jewelry and more. The online auction will work

much like a paddle raise, where bidders will use an online software to press a button to bid. “This is a team effort. We’re all hands on deck right now to host our guests,” Ms. McCarty said. “We’re excited to just visit with everybody and see everybody join us. It’s such a blessing to be with all our ocean-loving supporters.” Participants must register in advance for the event at https:// paybee.io/vevent.html?action=o penrsvp&eventId=5f1b5f66365f ca4b07b78bd3. After registering, participants will receive an email with the link to join. Horoscope.com Saturday, August 29, 2020

ARIES — It you’re able to attend a social event today, Aries, you won’t feel like talking. You could be content just to listen to what everyone else says, feel at peace, and enjoy the warmth, music, and company. You may have been spending too much time at home and could well need to get out for a while. Relax, sit back in your chair, and enjoy yourself! TAURUS — Someone, perhaps a close friend or partner, could present you with a small gift today, Taurus, possibly a book. There might not be any special occasion other than your friend thought you’d enjoy it. This can bring up warm and affectionate feelings. You’ll want to spend a considerable amount of time with this person. You may think it’s rare to find someone so sensitive and kind. GEMINI — Your intuition should be keener than usual today, Gemini, but right now you’re apt to be more interested in historical figures, perhaps people associated with spiritual disciplines. Books on these subjects could not only be interesting but also informative. Insights you gain from reading about these people help increase your understanding of the present. Keep reading! CANCER — Happiness reigns in the home, Cancer, as everyone seems to have reached a new understanding of one another. You could also experience a new sense of peace and quiet. Everyone is concentrating more on reading and working on their own projects and less on socializing. This could be a wonderful time for you. You’re getting along with your family and the house is a peaceful haven. Enjoy! LEO — Today you might attend a virtual group event of some kind involving your neighborhood, Leo, possibly with a partner. You and your friend might take an active part in discussing goals for the group. You feel strongly bonded to everyone - your partner, fellow group members, even the community. It’s a warm, fuzzy feeling that could stay with you all evening. VIRGO — Circumstances are changing regarding your professional goals, Virgo. You may have been thinking about a change for a long time, but someone you meet today, perhaps in a social or casual situation, could provide the motivation you need to finally decide. This isn’t just the result of outer changes. You’ve been changing inside, too. You aren’t the +*#!2 +1$)"$ same person you were when you chose your current job.

LIBRA — You’re probably good at applying your spiritual principles to the way you live, Libra. You’re especially good at it today, particularly when it comes to understanding others deeply. Relationships of all kinds will likely grow and improve, at least those that matter. Those that don’t will disappear. This is a time of great outer and inner change for you. Make the most of it! SCORPIO — Scorpio, you’re usually more outwardly directed, but today you might break that pattern. You could be in a contemplative mood and wondering about everything from metaphysics to philosophy to money to your future. You’re basically feeling positive about life, but you might be at a crossroads now. It may take some serious thought before you decide which direction to go. Give yourself some time. SAGITTARIUS — Today you might crave the companionship of friends and lovers alike, Sagittarius. You’re probably in the mood for some good food, good music, and great conversation, and that’s just what you’ll get if it’s possible in any way. Later you might spend time alone with a love partner, reflecting on recent conversations. Some of them might be worthy of deeper thought. Have a pleasant day and a wonderful evening. CAPRICORN — You’re feeling pretty strong now, Capricorn. You’re probably in fairly good health and your mind is sharp. You’ve outgrown some areas of your life that no longer seem what they once were. One of these could be your work. You could be considering leaving a job you took primarily for the money and going into a profession you really love. Do it if it works for you. AQUARIUS — Are you getting along better than ever with a significant other, Aquarius? If so, it’s probably because you’re more attuned to what your partner thinks, feels, needs, and wants. You might fetch something before he or she even knows it’s necessary. This can help you reach a new understanding of your beloved. Go with the flow and make the most of it. You’ll be glad you did. PISCES — Peace reigns in the home today. Members of your household could communicate with each other almost telepathically, Pisces. You might find it strange, but it shouldn’t be surprising. After all, they’ve been living together for a while! It’s good for peace in the home. They can sense and avoid whatever irritates someone else. That should give you some welcome breathing space.

All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance.

Westmont College’s Maud Ranger hoists a championship plaque after leading the Warriors to the Golden State Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament championship in March.

By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

Maud Ranger of Paris, France, spoke none too kindly about the English language when she arrived in America as a foreign exchange student during her sophomore year of high school. She was supposed to be a freshman. “They didn’t really understand my French transcript, she said, referring to Anaheim’s Fairmont Prep. “They thought I was already in my second year of high school. “My English wasn’t very good back then, and I actually didn’t like speaking it at all. But Ranger, who became as fluent in the language as she was on the basketball court during four years at Westmont College, will continue her career in another English-speaking country. She has signed to play for Scotland’s Caledonia Pride of the Women’s British Basketball League — the top professional league in Great Britain. Ranger, who graduated from Westmont last spring with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business, will also pursue a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh. “The head coach of the university usually scouts scholarathletes and happened to find me in his search, Ranger said. “He then contacted me to ask if I would be interested in pursuing a master’s degree while continuing basketball. “Given the current lack of job opportunities and my desire to eventually pursue a higher education, I thought it would be the perfect time to do that. The Caledonia Pride, the only Scottish team in the WBBL, plays its home games at the University of Edinburgh’s Pleasance Sport Complex and Gym. The league’s other teams are based in England and Wales. Ranger learned English the hard way during her seven years in America. “All my classes were in English, whether it was math or history or anything else, she said. “That definitely helped me learn the language. Having every conversation in English, and having to read everything in English, helped a lot. She became an NAIA AllAmerican this last season, making the third team after leading Westmont to the No. 1 seed of the NAIA National Championship Tournament. The event was canceled, however, by the COVID-19 pandemic. “I certainly did not think that I would play for any other team post-Westmont, Ranger said. “But this was an opportunity that I could not pass up. Continuing basketball at a competitive level while pursuing a degree in a new learning environment is incredibly exciting. “I am just grateful for the possibility of stepping on a court again given how my senior season ended. She and teammate Lauren Tsuneishi were battling for the school record for 3-pointers in a season when the plug was pulled. Both finished with 96, leaving

them just two short of the mark of 98 Meghan O’Donogue set in 2006. Ranger and Tsuneishi also finished tied for third in the NAIA with their averages of 3.2 3-pointers per game. But most astounding, considering Ranger’s height of just 5-foot-7, was how she ranked 12th in the nation with her 10.0 rebounds per game. Coach Kirsten Moore asked her to play a post position for the first time in her career after the Warriors lost two front-court players before the season even started. “Maud is the ultimate competitor that worked tirelessly over her career to maximize her capacity as an athlete and inspired her teammates to do the same, Moore said. “Maud loves the game of basketball as much as anyone I have ever coached, and her sheer joy for competition oozed out of her not just in the big moments on game day, but also in the day-to-day grind of practice and preparation. Ranger became the iron woman of the team, averaging a schoolrecord 34.3 minutes per game. She also became just the second Warrior in history to average a double-double, scoring 11.7 points per game to go with her 10.0 rebound average. Her durability became crucial for a team that was reduced to just eight players. “Our program at Westmont as a whole takes pride in how mentally tough we are, Ranger said. “We have to train all summer long to build up our toughness and then pass a conditioning test. “Fatigue was not an option. The Maud Squad, which compiled a win-loss record of 273, had actually gotten stronger as the year progressed. The Warriors were in the midst of a 14-game winning streak when the season ended. They beat The Master’s 7667 in their final game to win the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament championship. Ranger, the team’s lone senior, became the first Warrior to ever play for four GSAC Tournament championship teams. “We are going to miss Maud so much, Moore said. “But I am excited for her new coaches and teammates who will undoubtedly be positively impacted by her skills on the court, as well as her love for the game and her investment in caring for her teammates. “I am confident that her time as a Warrior has prepared her for success in this new endeavor and I am excited to watch it unfold even though she will be an ocean away. She will bring back much to Europe from her Westmont experience. “What I learned from playing sports and studying at Westmont, which can be so tough, is that you have to learn how to adapt, Ranger said. “But the good thing is that you don’t have to adapt alone. “There were always so many people helping me here. And that translates well in any language. email: mpatton@newspress.com

One member of the bottling crew puts a capsule on one bottle every second, a skill set that Bruce McGuire says not many can do.

Rapid bottling keys: Good machines, good crew, sufficient supplies wine

Continued from Page A1 disposal. Bruce McGuire is at the helm of the operation, and has been for nearly 40 years, something of a rarity in the wine industry. He spent most of his years growing up on the East Coast, but within five months of coming to California, he was running Santa Barbara Winery. “Wine is one of the few products that, five years from now, you can assess what happened that year,” Mr. McGuire told the NewsPress. “Unlike avocados where you pick them and you have to use them; otherwise, they’re gone… Other fruits and vegetables are finite. I’ve had wine that’s over a hundred years old.” He said his agricultural background got him into the industry, saying wine is “something that really captures what you did for years to come.” Back where the wine is bottled, the clinking and clanking of bottles together is rhythmic, and the aroma is as strong as putting a glass right up to the nose. The wine comes up from a tank downstairs, where it goes through sterile filtration. Then the bottles are splurged with nitrogen to remove the oxygen, filled, leveled and corked. One member of the Santa Barbara Winery crew puts a capsule on one bottle every second, a special skill set Mr. McGuire said not many have. The capsule gets spun down, and the bottles are labeled and placed in cases. The whole process happens crisp and quick, like clockwork. According to Mr. McGuire, there are three key components to this

rapid bottling: good machines, a good crew and sufficient supplies. The winery’s sauvignon blanc and syrah comes from grapes grown in the Santa Ynez Valley, along with chardonnay and pinot noir from Santa Barbara County and the Sta. Rita Hills. Mr. McGuire oversees and dictates everything from the grape selection to plant in the vineyard to the farming, cultivation, pruning and picking, all according to his style and winemaking philosophy. He told the News-Press he’s all but tired of wine, and still drinks it with dinner quite often. When asked what his favorite kind is, he simply shrugged and said with a smile, “The one in my glass.” email: gmccormick@newspress.

Santa Barbara Winery sells some of the top wine in the county, with award-winning chardonnays, pinot noirs and syrahs with vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Barbara County and the Santa Ynez Valley. It’s said to be uncommon for someone in the wine industry to stay at one winery for 40 years, but Bruce McGuire said his agricultural background has made him appreciate the wine industry because unlike other fruits and vegetables, wine’s dwell time allows him to see his work for years and years to come.

Orchids, told the News-Press. “I’m going to be able to pay my mortgage and we’re going to be able to get groceries and things like that, so I am fine. It really is just about helping and it’s as simple as that. “We could really help somebody else and it could make a real difference for some people.” With the pandemic shaking up the school situation and forcing the fall semester to start online, the foundation said these funds have been earmarked for the technology needed for distance learning. The foundation’s goal is to close the digital divide, allowing students to successfully participate in online learning with their peers. “These times have changed our focus on funding, I mean we have got a couple of thousand kids now working at home which requires a whole different set of tools. A binder and pad of paper, while they’re needed now, are not as important as a computer or strong reliable internet service,” Casey Balch, president of the foundation, told the News-Press. Mr. Balch said they hope to provide the Carpinteria school district with more Chromebooks or hotspots for the students that don’t have such luxuries at home. “We want to ensure that every student in the district has the resources that they need, are available to them, and provided,” Mr. Balch said. Getting technology into the hands of underprivileged students has always been a struggle. Oddly enough, due to the pandemic,

being able to provide every student in the district with access to technology might be a reasonable task. “The first step to equity is being able to ensure that kids all have access to the same education with the same tools, that’s really the most important step. The technology aspect of it is such a critical piece of the infrastructure now where it wasn’t before… Being able to provide that is really so fundamental,” Mr. Balch said. “Technology has always been a component of learning and will continue to be for long into the future, so to get us to the level where we have enough Chromebooks for every student in the district is huge. It has been a goal, but it never seemed attainable. Now that we are rapidly approaching that goal, it is going to be phenomenal.” The foundation’s goal for this year’s fundraiser is $100,000. While the pandemic has changed up its marketing tactics, Mr. Balch said this weekend the foundation will be mailing out flyers outlining its goals. The original date for the fundraiser was Sept. 12, though the foundation now will have an open fundraiser until it hits its mark. Rather than a big event, Mr. Balch said they will be running a “no-show” type of event, where people are encouraged to donate and resume their normal day. The foundation has been ingrained in the Carpinteria community for nearly 30 years, providing a “direct impact on student lives.” However, Mr. Balch said it’s the efforts of places like Westerlay that provide the foundation the

opportunity to help students in the community. “We’re tremendously fortunate, especially in these times, to receive their support. They’ve been supporters for years and they continue to understand and appreciate our mission of supporting the kids,” Mr. Balch said. “It’s definitely tough times for everybody and for them to continue with that support for us was honestly unexpected and we are tremendously grateful for it. “It allows us to continue with our mission of providing the district and the children in it most especially with the resources they need to be successful that otherwise would have gone unfunded.” The trust level between the foundation and Westerlay has never been better. “They are awesome. They are there for the families and the kids and we are relying on them on the best way to apply the funds,” Mr. Overgaag said. “I imagine that this will not just be for the short run, this will have long-term impacts as well.” Mr. Overgaag recalled the first time Westerlay donated to the foundation. The florist directly helped fund the arts program at Canalino Elementary. Last year, Westerlay’s donation helped the STEM programs at Aliso Elementary. “They showed us what they were doing with it and just how the dollars were able to go so far. They were able to stretch it, and it means so much to those kids in schools,” Mr. Overgaag said. Because of the pandemic, Mr. Overgaag hopes he can top last year’s donation of more than $18,000 to help the lower-income families that truly need the

It’s people low on the economic ladder that struggle... and we see that in education so we just hope to raise even more money this year,” Mr. Overgaag said. “It’s exciting people in the community are trying to promote it through their own social media and we do see a pop in the weekly sales. It’s a way for people to vote with their pocketbooks and help.” All retail proceeds earned through Sept. 5 will be donated to the foundation.
