I don’t want to take it personally, and I’m not usually the type to care about what others think, but it irks me because I am so passionate about this man. andom acts of kindness” is such a familiar phrase in our vocabulary today that we say it without really thinking about its true meaning. And how did it become so popular? “A random act of kindness is a non premeditated, inconsistent action designed to offer kindness toward the outside world,” according to Wikipedia, which goes on to explain that the phrase “practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty” was written by Anne Herbert on a placemat in Sausalito in 1982. It was based on the phrase “random acts of violence and senseless acts of cruelty.” In February 1993, Ms. Herbert wrote a book, “Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty,” speaking about true stories of acts of kindness. The News-Press found some true local stories about spontaneous acts of kindness in a recent newsletter sent to us by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Barbara. “We asked our members for personal stories of Random Acts of Kindness. The stories were inspirational and moving,” said Anita Dominocielo-Ho, newsletter editor. We agree. Here are the Kiwanis members’ stories:  On Monday, I ran into Eve, who is 97 years old. She was standing on the corner of De la Guerra and Garden and seemed to need help crossing the street. I diverted my car to go back to help her cross the street.

Dr. Kosic

Dr. Kosic receives grant Dr. Kenneth S. Kosic has been chosen by the Rainwater Charitable Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association to receive a nearly $4 million grant to fund Alzheimer’s and other dementia research. Dr. Kosic’s project, the Bifunctional Tau Degraders as a Novel Therapeutic Strategy for Tauopathy, is one of eight funded by the organizations to further drug discovery research for Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal degeneration and other tauopathies. An active member of the medical field since 1976, Dr. Kosik serves on the board of directors at the Alzheimer’s Association California Central Coast Chapter. He is also the Harriman Professor of Neuroscience Research and co-director of the Neuroscience Research Institute at UCSB. For more information, go to alz.org/ cacentralcoast. — Tess Kenny

Linda McComb Last Saturday at Trader Joe’s, I was in line to pay. The lady in front of me tells me she forgot her bags, and she was running to her car to get them, and to please keep an eye on her groceries and, of course, go ahead of her. I told the person behind me to go ahead while I kept both groceries. When the lady got back with her bags, I told her to go ahead of me. We both had a happy moment. Alma Veja I painted a few Sunday school classrooms this morning. Chris Grant I grow so-o-o many huge succulents in my backyard. About once a year, I make about 25 cuttings and place them in 1 to 5 gallon pots and put them on the sidewalk in front of my house. Within only a couple of hours, all will be picked up by people driving or walking by. Anita Dominocielo-Ho I live by many seniors who need help with various chores like bringing in groceries, clarifying directions from the homeowners association, etc. I often help them with these tasks. Anita Dominocielo-Ho has grown succulents that she has given away to passersby. It’s one of the random act of kindness listed in a Kiwanis Club of Santa Barbara newsletter.

Random acts of kindness Kiwanis Club of Santa Barbara members share thoughtful gestures At the American Hearts Association luncheon, I received a red dress pin and a necklace with a heart that lit up. On the way home, I stopped at Smart & Final. The checker asked about the pin and told me how much she appreciated what the AHA does and loved my necklace. I offered her both. At first, she refused, but I assured her that I had another pin. She was so excited! She teared up and told me that her relationship of 18 years had recently ended and that this was the first Valentine’s Day she was facing on her own. She looked at me and said, “You have no idea how much this means to me. May I give you a hug?” There was no way I was refusing a heartfelt hug on Valentine’s Day! I was just so grateful that I was able to give her a little something to brighten up her day, and I told her that her hug was the best present. We

both agreed that this moment was really what Valentine’s Day was really about. Jennifer Newell My grandson and I distribute food coupons to homeless people at the freeway. Janice Rorick When we flew to Bethesda for my medical status, we got upgraded by a very nice gate person, who thought I would be more comfortable in first class on the flight from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. Of course, it had more leg room and was closer to the front of the plane. On the way back, the gate people did the same from D.C. to Denver. How kind was that! Bruce Byers For me: My friend thought I

needed a good pampering and took me out for a manicure and pedicure. For another: My other friend has a tumor and has not been working. I have been giving her my small Bingo winnings. Kathy Huntington I went to the Arlington Theatre to watch the Academy Awards show. On the way out, I heard a woman call out into the crowd, “Can anyone give me a ride home?” I turned back to her and found out she didn’t live far away. I was happy to save her the Uber ride home. Also, I went to the Lobero Theatre to see “Improvology,” a live comedy show put on by the zoo every few months. As I approached the ticket window, a woman pulled me aside and said she wanted to give us two tickets. She had won four tickets from

a radio station but could use only two. She was delighted the tickets didn’t go to waste, and we were pleased to save $50. Roger Deck Email: mmcmahon@newspress.com

FYI

During these trying times, we’re sure that there are many others in the community who did or are doing random acts of kindness for others or someone did them or is doing them for you. We’d like to hear about them to bolster our spirits. Email a brief description about the kindness to Marilyn McMahon at mmcmahon@newspress.com. Please include your name and phone number or email address (which will not be printed) should we need to contact you.

Pet owners, be careful with Easter lilies. They’re poisonous to cats. In fact, just one or two leaves or simply the pollen can kill a cat, according to the Animal Poison Control Center. “Even small ingestions can result in kidney failure,” the center said on its website, www.petpoisonhelpline.com. The organization said kidney damage can occur within 24 and 72 hours of ingestion. Many plants of the lilium and hemerocallis species are poisonous to felines. They’re commonly known as Easter, tiger, day, Asiatic or Japanese show lily. The center said all parts of the lilies are poisonous to cats. While the exact toxin hasn’t been identified, it is water soluble. The Animal Poison Control Center said there’s no antidote for lily poisoning but urges prompt veterinary attention. Decontamination, such as inducing vomiting and giving drugs such as activated charcoal, is important in the early stages. Aggressive intravenous fluid therapy, kidney function monitoring tests and supportive care can improve the prognosis. The center said IV fluids ideally should be started within 18 hours. — Dave Mason

Holden would love to play with you. The 6-year-old cat is awaiting adoption through the Animal Shelter Assistance Program. He is outgoing, playful and full of energy. He would do best in a home with no other cats but is OK with dogs and children. Like most of ASAP’s cats during the COVID-19 pandemic, Holden is staying in a foster home but remains available for adoption. See www.asapcats.org to learn about adoptable cats, adoption applications and fostering opportunities. Until ASAP’s shelter in Goleta reopens to the public, you can reach the nonprofit at 805-683-3368 or info@asapcats.org. — Dave Mason

left, opens one heart. Your partner doubles, and the next player passes. What do you say? ANSWER: This case is close. In theory, your 11 points are enough for a jump to two spades, inviting game, but your king of hearts, trapped in front of the opening bidder, may be worthless. Many experts would jump anyway. I would reluctantly downgrade the hand and settle for a response of one spade. East dealer N-S vulnerable

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

rely on your brain alone to have all the answers. LIBRA — Today could be filled with unexpected twists, turns, and bends in the road that you may not be prepared for, Libra. Apparently someone forgot to install the sign that warns of sharp curves ahead. Be on the lookout for unexpected forks in the road. When you get to them, take them, to coin a phrase. Your brain could receive a jolt from an outside source that reminds you to keep things real. SCORPIO — You could be thinking some bizarre thoughts today, Scorpio. They might lead you in a direction that doesn’t quite pertain to your current situation. Don’t be afraid to explore these strange realms, because they could give you some important insight that you wouldn’t have realized otherwise. Wisdom can be found in the unlikeliest of places, so don’t discount something because it seems a bit off the wall at first. SAGITTARIUS — Your thinking is solid and clear today, Sagittarius, but other people could challenge your mental power. Don’t let others put seeds of doubt in your head about the way you approach a problem. Keep your mind open to alternative solutions, but don’t beat yourself up for your current mental track. You might need to modify your strategy, but don’t sacrifice your principles or values. CAPRICORN — You could get the feeling that something is wrong today when it isn’t, Capricorn. It’s probably just your perspective that needs some adjusting. Pull out your binoculars and focus a bit more so you can stand back yet have the power to examine the details closely. Don’t automatically assume there’s a clear distinction between right and wrong. There are likely a great many shades of gray, too. AQUARIUS — Your sensitive nature is likely to pick up a disturbance in your thinking today, Aquarius. Suddenly, a blast of unexpected information could come your way and throw a monkey wrench in your mental process. Try not to get thrown off balance by the sudden jolt. You’ll find that you can incorporate some of this new knowledge in a way that gives you a greater advantage. PISCES — You might experience some mental distractions that pull you in different directions today, Pisces. There could be a stubborn internal/external battle brewing. Realize that being in the middle is to your advantage. Look at the situation as a way to learn something about yourself and others. Understanding your opposition’s viewpoint will help you. Incorporate the old and the new into your way of thinking.

Since 1981 I’ve written a monthly column for the ACBL’s magazine. Many have been “over-my-shoulder” style. You listen in on my thoughts during a deal. Ninety of the best of these appear in “Play Bridge With Me,” my 23rd book, just published. The deals are intermediate level; the focus is on logical thinking. At today’s four spades, I win the first heart in dummy and lead a diamond. I can’t risk losing an early trump finesse; I need a quick pitch for my heart loser. East wins the second diamond and returns a heart, and I win to discard dummy’s last heart on my high diamond. When I finesse in trumps, East wins and exits with a trump.

HOROSCOPE

ARIES — It could be difficult for you to think straight today, Aries. Your brain is probably working in short, erratic bursts that keep you guessing about which way to proceed. Avoid confusion during the day by periodically centering and separating yourself and your feelings from the drama around you. Don’t pretend you understand something if you don’t. If a situation doesn’t make sense, go ahead and question it. TAURUS — Freedom is a key aspect of life today, Taurus. You might find that your brain wants to break free and pursue more independent ways of thinking. Don’t worry if such ways of thinking lead you into unknown territory. This is a sign that this is probably where you need to be. Your witty banter could take a sudden twist that surprises both you and the people you’re talking to. GEMINI — People are apt to be as stubborn as you in their thinking today, Gemini. This could be a recipe for disaster if you aren’t careful. Open the floodgates a bit wider and take in more of the opinions of others. Don’t automatically assume that other people have to conform to your viewpoint to resolve an issue. More than likely, there needs to be some give and take from all involved. CANCER — You could find yourself staring at a stranger for just one extra second as you pass on the street today, Cancer. Your tendency toward the new and bizarre is stronger than usual, and you’re being pulled into different mental directions. Go ahead and introduce yourself to that stranger. Perhaps he or she will become a business partner or new best friend. You never know until you ask. LEO — As you work slowly and steadily toward your goals, realize that there are apt to be unexpected obstacles along the way, Leo. You can’t possibly plan for everything, so don’t get discouraged today when some crazy variable pops out of nowhere. Your mental process may be thrown for a loop, and you might find that you go into a frenzy. There’s a valuable lesson to be learned here - patience. VIRGO — It’s generally quite clear that you aren’t afraid to tell people what you think, Virgo. Maybe it’s time to be more expressive about how you feel. It could be that your mental process is a bit off today, jolted by an unexpected situation or person. Make sureNovember you incorporate some Monday, 16, 2015 of your instincts and emotions into your reaction to the situation. Don’t

You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property.
