Like Nathan, Judith said her favorite activity of the day was the inflatable obstacle course. “Everything we do at Fun In the Sun is really rooted in teaching the kids teamwork and confidence and working together in a collaborative setting. All of our games are embedded in that, that teamwork mindset,” said Ms. Cabrera, “Anything we can do to get them wet and dirty is perfect.” Friday’s event was sponsored by the Brain Balance Center of Santa Barbara. “They are very generous to lend their support to this event today and we’re very grateful,” said Ms. Cabrera.

Local organic olive oil I can’t think of the last time I went through an entire day without using olive oil in my kitchen. Conveniently located on my kitchen counter next to the salt and pepper grinders, and a couple of other of my favorite go-to seasoning, it is an essential component of my daily culinary life. Currently available from California Coast Naturals at the weekly Saturday Santa Barbara, Sunday Camino Real, Tuesday Santa Barbara, Wednesday Solvang and Thursday Carpinteria farmers markets, this local organic product when harvested and pressed right here in Santa Barbara County. Brimming with flavor, this is a great farmers market find.

Garlic and artichoke hummus My family sure is consuming a lot of hummus these days. Maybe it’s because the kids are out of school and home all the time, but more likely, it’s simply so delicious we just keep coming back for more. I’m already a huge fan of the Baba Foods Small Batch sun-dried tomato, classic and lemon hummus, but this week we’ve been enjoying the garbanzo bean based garlic and artichoke blend. Currently available at the weekly Saturday Santa Barbara, Sunday Camino Real and Tuesday Santa Barbara certified farmers markets. Price is $6 per 8 ounce container or 3 for $15.

Smoked Chili’s The smokey aroma from these peppers hits you just before you reach Fred Ormonde’s stand at the Saturday Santa Barbara farmers markets. Infusing your dishes with an underlying smokey and mildly spicy flavor, they are excellent in soups and stews, slow-cooker recipes, and my favorite, homemade chili. Possessing a deep red color, theses petite, crisp dried peppers soften up once they hit the surrounding liquid. They can be stored in the pantry for many months in a bag or jar until ready for use. Price is two for $1 Sam Edelman is general manager of the Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market Association and host of “Farm to Table,” which airs live 9 a.m. Thursdays on KZSB AM 1290. A Solvang restaurant called peasants FEAST opened Wednesday. It is offering curbside pickup service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At left, the restaurant’s menu includes Thom’s Veggie Stack, which was named after Mrs. Cherney’s father, Thom Waner. It features marinated cucumber, red onion, sprouts, mozzarella, avocado and roasted garlic aioli. The current version features snap peas, radishes, greens and pea tendrils. At right, Reina Cherney, 11, is designing and making the ice cream sandwiches. Now open: peasants FEAST Solvang’s newest restaurant emphasizes connection with local farms By DAVE MASON NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

M

ichael Cherney is proud to be a peasant. “I call myself a peasant because I am that person, I am the working class,” the experienced 34-yearold chef told the News-Press. As a member of the working class, Mr. Cherney said he would like to open a restaurant on a farm 10 years from now. Currently, he’s happy to spotlight family recipes and fresh, seasonal comfort food grown on local farms at his and his wife Sarah Cherney’s new restaurant. It’s called peasants FEAST. Mr. and Mrs. Cherney opened Solvang’s newest restaurant Wednesday at 487 Atterdag Road. Mrs. Cherney told the NewsPress their business had a busy start with many orders. The menu features soups, sandwiches and salads for lunch or dinner, and prices range from $9 to $17 for most items. (You can order a whole roasted chicken for your family for $37, and Mrs. Cherney said more family-style options will appear in the coming weeks.) “I really want the farmers to be celebrated, the peasants to be celebrated,” said Mr. Cherney, who lives in Los Alamos with Mrs. Cherney and a son and daughter. (The two children are from Mrs. Cherney’s previous marriage.) Like other Santa Barbara County restaurants, peasants FEAST is taking cautionary steps during the COVID-19 pandemic. “You’re not allowed to enter the restaurant,” Mr. Cherney said. Instead, customers can look at the menu and place orders at www.peasantsfeast.com. They also can make orders by calling

805-686-4555. They must pay in advance by credit or debit card. About a half-hour later, they can pick up their food, which will be waiting in a bag on an outdoor table at peasants FEAST. Mr. Cherney, the former executive chef at Firestone Walker Brewing Co. in Buellton, said he and his wife had always planned to open the restaurant April 1 and stuck with those plans despite the novel coronavirus. For one thing, he said, they had obligations for paying the rent and other costs. Besides that, Mr. Cherney, whose experience includes volunteering on organic sustainable farms, said he feels a need to feed people. “I need to cook. I need to text the farmers a thousand times a week so I can plan my menu and specialities and see what’s growing and what’s coming up. “Of course, we’re going to the Farmers’ Market. It’s within walking distance of the restaurant,” Mr. Cherney said. But the chef explained he’s going beyond that. During recent months, he had his two sous chefs working a couple days a week on local farms at no cost to the farmers. He said that experience will contribute to the symbiotic relationship between his restaurant and farms and the cooks’ appreciation for the food they’re preparing. Mrs. Cherney said the restaurant’s front-of-the-house staff may also work on farms. The connection with farms will be especially clear in one of the restaurant’s dishes, its Market Salad. Mr. Cherney said it will change according to what’s in season. The current version consists of snap peas, radishes, greens and pea tendrils. Mr. Cherney said he will also

Owners Michael and Sarah Cherney are emphasizing their restaurant’s connection with local farms.

FYI A new restaurant, peasants FEAST, is providing curbside service from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at 487 Atterdag Road, Solvang. The restaurant is taking cautionary steps during the COVID-19 pandemic. Food must be ordered and paid for in advance by credit or debit card. To see the menu and place orders, go to www.peasantsfeast.com. You also can make orders by calling peasants FEAST at 805-686-4555. base his soups on seasonal vegetables at local farms. Other menu items vary from bagel and lox, featuring pastrami smoked salmon, to several sandwiches such as Solvang Hot Chicken and the

Gold Coast Grilled Cheese. The restaurant’s Atterdag Smash Burger will feature ground beef and ingredients such as gruyere cheese and caramelized onions. One of the restaurant’s dishes was inspired by Thom Waner, Mrs. Cherney’s late father. “This is a sandwich her dad used to make for her, and Sarah started making it for me whenever we went on any of our diet trends because it’s a healthy vegetarian option,” Mr. Cherney said. Called Thom’s Veggie Stack, the sandwich consists of marinated cucumber, red onion, sprouts, mozzarella, avocado and roasted garlic aioli. Mr. Cherney said much of the inspiration for the restaurant’s dishes come from his father, Mark Cherney, who died when the chef was young, and Mrs. Cherney’s mother, Pamela Meade, who passed away last summer. “Her mother would hold these feasts for her family,” Mr. Cherney said. “She wasn’t a professional cook. She was a home cook who was very passionate, and she was a really great gardener. She was written up quite a few times (in publications such as the NewsPress) for the gardens she had at her house.” Mrs. Cherney found her mother’s recipe for Frozen Lime Pie, complete with a graham cracker crust. It’s now part of the peasants FEAST menu. And the youngest generation of the Cherneys is helping the restaurant. Reina, the 11-yearold daughter who has a love for making ice cream, is designing and creating special ice cream sandwiches. For example, one is peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookie with peanut butter ice cream and cocoa nibs. And Mr. Cherney said Sabian, the 13-year-old son, will also help

at the restaurant. Mr. Cherney, who grew up in Northridge, brings his lifelong passion for food and culinary experience to peasants FEAST. During high school, he liked to cook and entertain during special taco nights for his family and friends. “In high school, I took a home ec class, and on the second day of the class, I was hooked. We cooked pizzas that day,” said the Granada Hills Charter High School alum. He earned his bachelor’s in hospitality management in the late 2000s at the Santa Monicabased Art Institute of California. Also in the late 2000s, Mr. Cherney worked as a line cook at Ortolan Restaurant in Los Angeles. He went on to work as the chef de partie at L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Las Vegas before coming in 2012 to Sides Hardware and Shoes — A Brothers Restaurant in Los Olivos, where he met Mrs. Cherney, who became the restaurant’s general manager. Mr. Cherney was chef de cuisine there until 2017, then worked as executive chef at Mesa Burger in Santa Barbara and Firestone Walker Brewing Co. in Buellton. Mr. Cherney said he enjoys seeing happy customers. “I need to have that interaction with the guests and take my head out of the kitchen to see smiles, laughs and full bellies.” He added he’s looking forward to the day when health officials say it’s safe for people to dine at peasants FEAST and other restaurants. “I still have the plastic on the tables and chairs. As soon as they say we can open, I’m ripping them all off.” Email: dmason@newspress.com

careful of being too stingy about sharing yourself with others. LIBRA — You’re likely to be feeling a bit lonely, perhaps even isolated, Libra. Maybe you think no one else has your same wild thoughts running through their heads. You’d be surprised to learn how many people do. It’s unlikely, however, that you’ll share these thoughts with anyone, especially now. Don’t feel like you have to. Just know that you aren’t alone and that you have a network of support at all times. SCORPIO — If you have the opportunity to teach someone a lesson, Scorpio, feel free to do so. There’s probably someone in your world who could use a bit of instruction now. You’ll have the patience and clarity of words to straighten things out and make the correct path obvious. Don’t be stingy with your knowledge. The situation will improve for you and everyone else when you selflessly spread your wisdom to others. SAGITTARIUS — You could hesitate to take the initiative, Sagittarius. Instead, you’d rather wait and see how things pan out before you make a major move. Your movements are hindered in some way, although you may not be sure why. It’s best to go with your intuition and not question too much. Just know that you’re better off taking the safer route rather than walking too far out on the thin ice. CAPRICORN — You could feel increasingly uncomfortable as the day goes on, Capricorn. Perhaps you’re tongue-tied in conversations - quite rare for you. The problem is that you simply don’t know what to say, or if you do, you don’t feel comfortable saying it in front of these people. Perhaps you feel you’ve lost your edge. Don’t despair. This is only a passing phase. You should return to your full-blown communicative self before long. AQUARIUS — You could lapse into pessimism, Aquarius. Suddenly the glass appears half empty and everything looks bleak. You feel like you’re going around in circles. You might ask yourself what you’re doing it all for anyway. You can talk yourself out of this mood as easily as you talked yourself into it. It might not seem possible, but you must trust that it’s necessary in order to see the glass as half full again. PISCES — You might be much more aware of yourself than usual and hyper-alert to every move you make today, especially around others, Pisces. You’re feeling selfconscious about your words, and you could be constantly wondering if you’re saying the right thing to the right person at the right time. Too much self-analysis of could drive you completely insane if you aren’t careful. Try not to take everything so seriously.

left, opens one heart. Your partner doubles, and the next player passes. What do you say? ANSWER: This case is close. In theory, your 11 points are enough for a jump to two spades, inviting game, but your king of hearts, trapped in front of the opening bidder, may be worthless. Many experts would jump anyway. I would reluctantly downgrade the hand and settle for a response of one spade. East dealer N-S vulnerable

HOROSCOPE

Since 1981 I’ve written a monthly column for the ACBL’s magazine. Many have been “over-my-shoulder” style. You listen in on my thoughts during a deal. Ninety of the best of these appear in “Play Bridge With Me,” my 23rd book, just published. The deals are intermediate level; the focus is on logical thinking. At today’s four spades, I win the first heart in dummy and lead a diamond. I can’t risk losing an early trump finesse; I need a quick pitch for my heart loser. East wins the second diamond and returns a heart, and I win to discard dummy’s last heart on my high diamond. When I finesse in trumps, East wins and exits with a trump.

CODEWORD PUZZLE By Dave Green

“Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.” — Plato

ARIES — Your attitude is calm and matter-of-fact when talking to others, Aries. You tell it like it is while omitting the frills and fantasies. You have no reason to hide the truth, so you’re happy to disclose information to any willing listener. Be careful, because you could get into someone else’s private business uninvited. If you hear some secret information, you could tell it to others who definitely shouldn’t hear it. TAURUS — You’re likely to have tremendous concentration that seems to have materialized out of nowhere. Use this to your advantage, Taurus, because it may not last long. You’re usually blown from one thing to another like a leaf in the wind, and it’s hard for you to settle on one project or issue for an extended time. You may have to shut a few people out in order to finish some tasks, but that’s fine. Do what you have to do. GEMINI — Be careful about shutting yourself off from the rest of the world, Gemini. You might hesitate to talk to people. You could have the feeling that they’re unworthy of your time. Perhaps you feel that your problems are more important and that others are too concerned with superficial things to understand the true depth of your nature. Isolating yourself certainly isn’t going to remedy the situation. You really need to communicate more. CANCER — You might talk as if you possess many lifetimes of wisdom, Cancer. Perhaps you do, but that doesn’t mean you should be arrogant about it. Your words might have the tone of a sage schooled in every subject. As a result, you could grow frustrated with others who act immature or uneducated. It isn’t your job to judge. Help others understand the bigger picture instead of assume they’re unworthy or unwilling to learn. LEO — Once you’ve made up your mind, Leo, it’s doubtful that anyone can change it. You’re set in your ways and your plans are set in stone. Having this solid base to stand on will let others support you effectively. You’re trustworthy and predictable. Others can depend on you and know where they stand in relation to you. Don’t let self-doubt slip in. This is your time to stand tall and proud. VIRGO — You might be hard and cold when it comes to the facts, Virgo, and you could come across as tough and rather harsh. In reality, this often just masks your sensitive interior. Perhaps you’re insecure about your feelings and how you express yourself. People might never Monday, November 16, 2015 know this because you’re so good at showing only the strong-willed, electric side of your personality. Be

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.
