When he was 4, Bryan’s father was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear, and has been unable to work ever since. The collision occurred around 7: 40 a.m. involving a GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe. One of the vehicles collided with the hydrant and “caused it to expel copious amounts of water”

Local authors offer tips in “How Two Have a Successful Relationship”

hile celebrating their first wedding anniversary on a camping trip 12 years ago, Phil and Maude Mayes mused about the fact that their relationship, which began three years before, had been conflict-free. “This was contrary to the prevailing wisdom that there are bound to be problems in every relationship. We decided we didn’t subscribe to that,” said Mr. Mayes. “Peace can be an everyday reality even when there are two very independent and different people.” As they began to analyze their own relationship, they decided to share what they have learned in their first book, “Secrets of a Successful Relationship,” and more recently in their second selfpublished paperback, “How Two Have a Successful Relationship.” “Conflict is not inevitable, and it is possible to have a passionate and peaceful relationship,” said Mrs. Mayes. In the 114-page book, based on real life experience, the couple cover an amazing array of topics such as: • How to find mutual solutions to decision making and problem solving • How to remain an individual within the relationship • How to break the vicious cycle of anger and recrimination • How to avoid the pitfalls that create separation and estrangement • How to keep that original loving connection to your partner. “Acceptance is basic to the process, but by that we don’t mean compromise,” said Mr. Mayes, 75. “Compromise is the act of giving up something to get something else. It assumes that there are different sides and that one must settle in order to avoid conflict.” The couple have a favorite way of describing total acceptance of the other, of who and how they are. or Santa Barbara nonfiction writer Michael Bowker, writing fiction was always a dream. The dream came to full fruition in February with the release of his debut novel “Gods of Our Time: A Paris Love Story” (Sixty Degrees Publishing). The book sells for $14.95 at www.amazon.com. The novel was inspired by the creative spirit of Paris, where Mr. Bowker frequently traveled for a past job he had with a fashion company in which he was a partial owner. There was little question in his mind that the French capital would serve as the setting for his first novel. Once that was set in stone, Mr. Bowker began working out what the novel would be about, and what emerged was a romantic adventure of political and criminal intrigue that moves from the streets of Paris to the city’s underground. At the heart of the story: a romantic duo that Mr. Bowker had housed in his mind for too long. “I think they’ve been in there

since I was young,” he told the News-Press. “They just got tired of being in there.” Originally from Kansas, where he grew up on a farm, Mr. Bowker attended the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in journalism, which he figured would be a practical use of English, his first love. He went on to write for national media outlets varying from the Los Angeles Times to Reader’s Digest. He believes the articles he wrote for the latter served as something of a precursor to his more recent creative writing. He dispelled the common view that Reader’s Digest articles are formulaic and easy to write. Because he was required to write about given topics in a narrative format with an emotional arc, there was a number of ways in which he could have approached Reader’s Digest stories. That’s why it was difficult to write them. When it comes to books, Mr. Bowker is mostly known for nonfiction, which comprises the first 19 of his 20 books. His first book, 1989’s “Playing from the Heart,” recently passed a million copies sold. While his career as a nonfiction author was successful and comfortable, an ambition to make up his own stories constantly sat in the back of his mind. As he approached writing “Gods of Our Time,” Mr. Bowker’s greatest trepidation was the possibility that he wouldn’t like the fiction writing process. Because the final literary product was always something he held high up on a pedestal, the idea of him disliking the process was one he hoped wouldn’t come to pass. Fortunately, he ended up enjoying the process immensely. “There was not one day I worked

on this that I wasn’t thrilled. It was such a surprise and it was such a relief that I loved doing it so much,” he said. Featuring a pair of protagonists with troubled pasts who wonder if finding hope and love is still possible in their lives, “Gods of Our Time” chronicles their emotional odyssey together and how they help each other through that journey. Set in 1920s Paris, “Gods of Our Time” tells the story of a love affair between Sophie, a French woman who becomes a nurse in Paris to cope with her village’s destruction and family’s death in World War I, and Jake, a midwestern American journalist who travels to the city to interview the famous artists and writers who lived there at that time. These included Ernest Hemmingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, and Gertrude Stein — the titular “Gods of Our Time.” Jason grew up believing that he has to be perfect and that only great men amount to anything. But he soon finds out that his interview subjects, who he sees as gods of his time, are far from perfect. This realization dawns on him when he meets novelist Ernest Hemingway for an interview that completely falls to pieces, a scene that Mr. Bowker pointed to as one of his favorites. Hemingway begins the interview with the remark, “Who are you to interview me? I should be interviewing myself.” The interview only gets worse from there. When Jake first meets Sophie, they are both at a crossroads in their lives that makes them question if hope and love is forever gone for them. Throughout the course of the book, they encounter a criminal gang and face betrayal and conspiracy in a journey that takes them from the French countryside, ruined by war, to the

Instead, when you accept yourself and the other and go forward in the freedom that this way of being brings, it creates an exquisite experience of peace and joy.” A computer programmer, Mr. Mayes, who was born and raised outside of London, came to Santa Barbara in 1987 after traveling around the world and working at a variety of jobs. “I repaired guitars at one time,” he said during the phone interview from the couple’s home in downtown Santa Barbara. His wife, a native of New York City, also traveled abroad after taking part in the famous Woodstock Music Festival in August 1969 in Bethel, N.Y. She was one of more than 400,000 who attended the three-day event. “After spending time in Germany, France and The Netherlands, I joined a healing community in the Bavarian Alps. “We lived in a 300-year-old farmhouse growing healing herbs, and I worked as a midwife. I had my first child there and wrote a book on pregnancy and birth,” said Ms. Mayes, 74. The mother of two adult children and grandmother of two moved to Santa Barbara in 1980 and was an independent living instructor for 22 years. She stressed that the goal in dealing with differences is to find “mutuality, to hear each other and learn what is really important to one’s self and to the other person. We have to know our own things. Why do we want to go to a certain movie? Why do we want to go to a certain vacation location?” “We have to drill down to find the motives and desires for each person to end up finding agreement,” added her husband. “When we do, something magical occurs. Local nonfiction writer Michael Bowker fulfills a lifelong dream with his first novel

underground of Paris. After completing his story, Mr. Bowker left his novel on his computer for the better part of a year and didn’t end up releasing it until he underwent a near-death experience. Last May, Mr. Bowker suffered a heart attack and ended up in Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The author said his life was saved by his daughters, who called an ambulance for him against his protests that he was OK. His doctors told him that he arrived at the hospital just in time and would have died had he been brought in any later. After experiencing this health scare, Mr. Bowker decided to release his first novel and use it to benefit the Cottage Heart and Vascular Center, which receives portions of the profits from each copy sold. With any luck, Jake and Sophie’s story in “Gods of Our Time” won’t be limited to the written page for long, as the novel recently got optioned for a movie by Passage Pictures. According to the author, the novel got optioned when a friend of his passed the book to a film producer who expressed a desire to do a film that wasn’t “superhero-ish.” The producer was enthusiastic about the prospect of making it into a film, so Mr. Bowker is currently working on a screenplay adaptation. He hopes the finished film stars the real-life couple of Orlando Bloom and Santa Barbara native pop star Katy Perry. One might expect that a man who recently suffered a heart attack would relax his work schedule, but Mr. Bowker has actually ramped up his efforts on other creative projects. They vary from writing the memoirs of his 95-year-old mother to his second
