Work continues on Highway 101 widening

CARPINTERIA The Santa Barbara County Association of Governments released an update Friday on next week’s work on the Highway 101: Linden and Casitas Pass construction project. From Monday through Wednesday crews will be restriping lanes and moving concrete safety barriers to prepare for the next stages of work, according to a press release from SBCAG. Highway 101 will have alternating lane closures between Linden and Bailard avenues. One lane will remain open. From 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday, the northbound onramps at Casitas Pass Road and Linden Avenue will have alternating closures as needed. From 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Wednesday the southbound offramp at Casitas Pass Road will be closed as needed. Via Real is closed from Casitas Pass Road to the old northbound Highway 101 onramp. Local residents have one-way access to Hales Lane on Via Real. Pedestrians can use the sidewalk on Via Real, but people are asked to refrain from entering the construction area. The new southbound Highway 101 onramp at Casitas Pass Road is open and the temporary ramp has been removed. The offramp at Linden Avenue is closed for approximately six to nine months. Drivers are asked to use the of-ramps at Reynolds Avenue or Casitas Pass Road to reach the beach and downtown Carpinteria.

Whereas the invertebrate study covered five coastal locations, the upcoming study will focus on an area just south of Point Conception. Sea otter populations in many other Southern California waters are still lacking in numbers, so it was necessary to select an area with a consistently sizeable population to determine whether or not the creatures have a significant impact on nutrient levels. “Sea otter populations are starting to recover in Southern California and that is a stable population,” Mr. Peters said. In addition to observing sea otters, Mr. Peters will lead a study that takes a closer look at spiny lobsters and

biomass is located, near the surface, Mr. Peters’ next study will explore whether other marine animals contribute to nitrogen levels in the kelp forest canopy. Because sea otters forage for reef invertebrates and spend much of their time resting in the kelp forest, Mr. Peters suspects they act as “a conveyor belt of nutrients,” directly supplying their waste and urine into the canopy. While the UCSB team’s collaborators at the United States Geological Survey have studied otter activity at monthly intervals for 13 years, Mr. Peters told the News-Press that he and his team will observe them on a “finer scale.”

program combines learning with having fun. “We learned about owls and how when they eat their prey they cough up hairballs with the bones of their prey,” he said excitedly. He said he also enjoys studying math. Nathan said the Olympic games are a highlight of his summer, a great opportunity to see old friends and meet new people. “Everyone knows each other,” he said. Nathan listed off a dozen new friends he made before he ran off to try the giant inflatable obstacle course, a favorite at the event. Many of the students have participated in Fun in the Sun in the past, but newcomers are quickly welcomed into the group. Judith Figueroa, 11, said this is her first year in the program and said she wants to come back

next year. “You get to do literacy, math, all kinds of stuff. My favorite part is recess or lunch. We get to do foursquare,” she said. Like Nathan, Judith said her favorite activity of the day was the inflatable obstacle course. “Everything we do at Fun In the Sun is really rooted in teaching the kids teamwork and confidence and working together in a collaborative setting. All of our games are embedded in that, that teamwork mindset,” said Ms. Cabrera, “Anything we can do to get them wet and dirty is perfect.” Friday’s event was sponsored by the Brain Balance Center of Santa Barbara. “They are very generous to lend their support to this event today and we’re very grateful,” said Ms. Cabrera.

perature around them impact their nitrogen output. According to the release, lobsters along with sea stars have an “outsized effect in shaping the ecosystem” because of their predatory nature. Because their diets contain more protein than other invertebrates, they release more ammonium and nitrogen-rich compounds in their waste. The crustaceans gather together in dens during the day, which Mr. Peters suspects may result in more herbivores moving into the reefs if this leads to an increase in algae around the lobster dens. Mr. Peters said he hopes to conclude the sea otter study by fall of this year.

That woman also happened to have a daughter who was that year’s Spirit, and through her Ms. Parker’s activity in Fiesta resumed. Ms. Parker attended the April 13 auditions that ended with 16-year-old Sophia Cordero being named Spirit of Fiesta and 10-year-old Paloma Valenzuela chosen as Junior Spirit. ith the kids out of school for the unforeseeable future, juggling work and child care can be a tricky balance. The whole “I’m working from home” thing with a 3 and 6 year old bouncing off the walls just doesn’t cut it, so my wife and I have been working to maintain a reasonable schedule. With much more time spent at the actual market sites these days to ensure our long list of new protocol are in place, working daily with our farmers and customers to maintain a safe and healthy shopping experience, One thing that I’ve been doing a lot of is cooking, something, as I’ve mentioned before, my kids regularly do with me. With a refrigerator loaded with farmers market fresh produce, particularly since I’ve been on site so often, experimenting with new recipes, and really taking the time to sit down and enjoy my meals with the family always makes me feel good. Various salads, pasta dishes, slowcooker meals, chili recipes, and breakfast combinations galore. This week I prepared a flavorful chili roasted beet salad, drenched in a simple garlic and Meyer lemon infused dressing. Fresh herbs, shredded carrot, celery and onion were all tossed together for an infusion of flavor. erhaps the first thing you notice about a LemonScented Gum tree is its unique bark pinkish-white and perfectly smooth. A real eye-catcher. For quick identification, other striking features are its long trunk and, topping that, the up-reaching open branch structure with graceful pendulous branchlets, all of which make a beautiful silhouette against the sky. It’s hard to miss a mature tree, since it can easily reach over 100 feet in height with a crown spread of over 90 feet in width. The best way to remember the first part of its common name is to pick a leaf, crush it between your fingers, sniff its broken margins, and instantly experience its refreshing lemon scent — a delightful dose of aromatherapy. “Gum” refers to the fact that sap oozing from any wounds in the bark is quite gummy and sticky. The Lemon-Scented Gum is native to the dry woodlands of Queensland, Australia. It was brought to California in the late 1880’s — and was first planted locally by Ellwood Cooper in 1887 at his ranch west of Goleta

(part of which is now the Ellwood Preserve). One of his trees has grown to be the largest of its kind in California — with a height exceeding 140 feet, a crown spread of over 95 feet, and a trunk nearly 14 feet in circumference. Early in the last century, it was crowned the “Ellwood Queen” and today, at age 133, it still stands as a truly regal specimen. Mature leaves are glossy green on both sides and measure and 1/ 3 to 1 inch wide and 3 to 6 inches long; these are often sickleshaped. Curiously, juvenile leaves are larger, at 1 to 3 inches wide and 4 to 7 inches long; these can be rough and bristly from long oil glands and, as a result, are the most strongly scented. Through late winter and spring, its small white flowers appear in dense clusters along the branchlets. The fuzzy-looking flowers offer copious amounts of pollen and nectar, which are very attractive to bees who, not surprisingly, make from them a delicious honey. The pollinated flowers develop into woody, urnshaped capsules, 1-inch long, which are filled with tiny seeds.

Currently, there are no serious insect or disease problems with this tree species. In the nottoo-distant past, though, it did suffer from invasion by a serious insect pest, the “lerp psyllid”, a bug as nasty as its name sounds. Fortunately, this psyllid seems to have been controlled through the release of great numbers of a parasitic wasp, a natural predator. Biological warfare at its best. Lemon-Scented Gum is very well suited to our Mediterranean climate. It can grow in a wide variety of soil conditions and is quite drought-tolerant when established. Due also to its elegant and graceful appearance, it has proved to be very popular. Consequently, over the years, it has been planted extensively, as an ornamental tree, throughout Santa Barbara County and California. Besides its value as a landscape tree, the Lemon-Scented Gum has many useful purposes. The leaves and sap contain the chemical citronellal, which is processed into essential citronella oils used in perfumes, menthols, insect repellents, and aboriginal and traditional medicines. In Australian, its wood is highly

prized for tools and lumber. Its botanical name is Corymbia citriodora. The genus name, “Corymbia”, refers to its corymbtype flower clusters. The specific epithet, ìcitriodoraî, refers to its lemon-citrus odor. Most folks think Lemon-Scented Gum is still in the genus Eucalyptus; but, it’s only a close relative. After genetic testing, it was reclassified into the genus Corymbia. Because of its potentially large size at maturity, a Lemon-Scented Gum should be placed in a location that can accommodate its ultimate growth. It should be planted in a sunny location. Note: a young tree will require adequate staking, to allow the trunk and roots to sufficiently develop before the tree is subject to buffeting winds. Besides the “Ellwood Queen”, there are several well-known and historic Lemon-Scented Gums in Santa Barbara. The oldest and largest, the “Fernald Eucalyptus”, standing on the east side of the 400 block of Santa Barbara Street, was saved by Pearl Chase when that block was being developed. The old trees in front of the Central Library downtown have been designated historic landmarks

by the City. Other outstanding specimens can be seen on upper State Street at Calle Real, in the parking lot of 5 Points Shopping Center, on State Street near Ontare Road and near Hope Avenue, and on Santa Barbara Street at Haley Street. Tree-of-the-Month articles are sponsored by Santa Barbara Beautiful, whose many missions include the increase of public awareness and appreciation of Santa Barbara’s many outstanding trees and, in a long-time partnership with the City Parks & Recreation Department, the funding and planting of trees along the City’s streets — a project which has resulted in the planting, to date, of more than 12,000 street trees. Tree of the Month, presented by Santa Barbara Beautiful, increases awareness and appreciation of Santa Barbara’s many outstanding trees. Whisk again just before serving . Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a mixing bowl, toss beets with olive oil, chili powder, garlic powder and salt until well coated. Place in a roasting dish and cook for 45 minutes, or until beets are tender. Remove and let cool to room temperature. Then toss roasted beets with celery, carrot, onion and fresh herbs, finally, toss in dressing to taste. If you would like more of a leafy green component you can also toss in chopped kale, arugula, beet tops, or little gem lettuce. Topping with chèvre and/or pistachio kernels is also a nice finishing touch. Yield: Serves 4 sides.

LIBRA — There is some likelihood of a slight career conflict, Libra. You might have to deal with a co-worker who steps on your toes or runs roughshod over your gentle nature. Defend yourself with your favorite weapons silence, laughter, and perspective. Let your adversary tangle himself or herself in desperate attempts to justify their behavior. Let your boss be the wise and discerning judge of the matter. SCORPIO — For a few weeks now you’ve understood that each day brings its share of constraints, Scorpio. For example, today you could feel doubts about your physical appearance. Are you questioning your attractiveness or your ability to make an impression on someone special? Did you use bad judgment at some point, and you’re now afraid that you’ve hurt your reputation? A decision you make at the end of the day will relieve these anxieties. SAGITTARIUS — This is a day to think about your private life, Sagittarius. Expect to be particularly sensitive to all kinds of demands from those close to you. You have the power to create greater harmony at home, specifically in your relationship. Take stock of everyone’s desires and consider any limitations in fulfilling them. Even if the answers aren’t found today, it will be useful to simply ask the questions. CAPRICORN — Today can be a relaxing day, provided you make the necessary effort to deal with material constraints, Capricorn. You would like nothing better than to spend much of the day planning fun activities for the future. But, alas, demands from your family, friends, or boss force you to concentrate on the here and now instead. Still, don’t abandon your wonderfully pleasing ambitions altogether. AQUARIUS — There is a lot on your mind today, Aquarius. Over the last three weeks you’ve analyzed your relationships on a deep and profound level. New people with attractive qualities could be tempting you to make a change. But is this a good time in your life to start up friendships or love relationships? Are you willing to accept the upheaval such changes would create? These are worthwhile questions to ask. PISCES — After a few days that were a bit serious, Pisces, today you awake with a light heart and boundless energy! Your capacity for seduction will be at its peak, so why not use it to your advantage? The men and women at work, in particular, will yield to your wishes today. Your influence extends to all levels of the organization. If you’ve been thinking about asking your boss for a raise, do it today!

Since 1981 I’ve written a monthly column for the ACBL’s magazine. Many have been “over-my-shoulder” style. You listen in on my thoughts during a deal. Ninety of the best of these appear in “Play Bridge With Me,” my 23rd book, just published. The deals are intermediate level; the focus is on logical thinking. At today’s four spades, I win the first heart in dummy and lead a diamond. I can’t risk losing an early trump finesse; I need a quick pitch for my heart loser. East wins the second diamond and returns a heart, and I win to discard dummy’s last heart on my high diamond. When I finesse in trumps, East wins and exits with a trump.

HOROSCOPE

ARIES — If you have children, Aries, you could be feeling a bit overworked and overwhelmed. If you don’t have children, perhaps the constraints and demands of your professional life are weighing heavily on your mind. Don’t worry - these feelings shall pass. Expect an opportunity to get free of the ties that bind. Even though it will only be a temporary respite, take advantage of it! TAURUS — Feeling grumpy lately, Taurus? Don’t fret, because your bad mood won’t last. This attitude is unlike you. Coworkers notice your change in personality but still treat you with consideration and respect. You’re fortunate to be able to draw upon a considerable wealth of kindness and good karma that you have built up over the years. Your friends and loved ones treat your mood as an aberration, which is exactly what it is. GEMINI — How hard you have to work to achieve your purposes, Gemini! It’s as though you carry around an overstuffed sandbag and each step requires a huge effort! This would be a good day to identify the source of the trouble. Ask if you aren’t sabotaging yourself and letting your subconscious resist the goals you have so deliberately set. You have a deep inner mystery to solve. CANCER — You could have an urge to invent new things, Cancer. You feel compelled to create something in the artistic, technical, or philosophical field. If only you’d give yourself enough time to pursue these ideas! Today, realize that concentration is the key to accomplishment. Put away periodicals, computers, phones, and other such distractions and you might well be surprised by the wealth of inspiration that comes to you. LEO — Generally, you come up with the perfect, witty answer one day too late. Impulse and intuition take a back seat to your excellent self-control. The day ahead presents one opportunity to let go of the inhibition that sometimes stymies you. Yield to your instincts a little and see what happens. A little more socializing wouldn’t hurt, either. You’re certainly entitled to some fun now and then! VIRGO — You think of yourself as fairly modern in your thinking, don’t you, Virgo? But have you really been able to reject tradition entirely? Have you rid yourself of all the outmoded conventions that confined earlier generations? If not, today you’ll be inspired to revamp your role models and Monday, November 2015 in lighten your workload.16, Equality the home is just as important as equality in the workplace.

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.
