Researcher suspects sea otters act as ‘a conveyor belt of nutrients’ OTTERS

Because sea otters forage for reef invertebrates and spend much of their time resting in the kelp forest, Mr. Peters suspects they act as “a conveyor belt of nutrients,” directly supplying their waste and urine into the canopy. All levels of ability and all ages are welcome to join the free basketry group that will resume meeting from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at the Santa Barbara Mission when the coronavirus pandemic is over.
‘A Tisket A Tasket’ Weavers create more than green and yellow baskets By MARILYN MCMAHON NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

usan Robles admits she was reluctant to take the leadership role for a group of basket makers. “I’m a shy person. I like to be in the background. But when I saw the reaction of a participant at one of our first sessions, it inspired me to continue helping others. The woman was so excited as she showed off her very first basket, she was saying, ‘I made it!’ ” said Mrs. Robles. Now, she bubbles with the same enthusiasm — although still wary to be in the spotlight — about the group which will resume its monthly gatherings at the Santa Barbara Mission when the coronavirus pandemic ends. “We don’t have a formal name, and I prefer not to call it a class because that would make me sound like an instructor. The best description would be a basketry group or gathering,” said Mrs. Robles, who lives in Montecito. “I’m known for my casual approach. Perfection is no option — as long as it’s functional. There’s an old saying, ‘If your basket is intended for your mother-in-law, you don’t want to offend her by having it perfect.’ The imperfection shows your humility.” The Santa Barbara native said she started making baskets because of her love of gardening and the Chumash ancestry of her husband Chris Robles and his extended family. “I took a class at Adult Ed called

‘Fiber Arts: Basket Weaving’ that was taught by Cathy Molholm. When she retired, six or seven of us wanted to continue so we met at various times and locations around town,” Mrs. Robles said. In 2016, they began gathering every third Wednesday at Montecito Village Hall on East Valley Road, and since January 2019 have been meeting from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at the Santa Barbara Mission. “Tina Foss and Dr. Monica Orozco at the Mission were instrumental in providing us with such a beautiful and peaceful venue,” said Mrs. Robles, who graduated from Santa Barbara HIgh School in 1983. All levels of ability and all ages are welcome to join the group, which now numbers about 18. Among them is Ernestine De Soto, whose mother, Mary Gee, was the last known speaker of the Chumash language in Santa Barbara. “Ernestine and I attend the monthly class, ‘Weaving Chumash Style Baskets,’ at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History,” Mrs. Robles said. Ann Hoenig, another member of the group, particularly enjoys “participating in and reviving an
ancient skill, not to mention the creative outlet as we each start out with the same material, looking at a finished product for reference as each piece becomes unique. “We try to do baskets that are useful. Many are made and given as gifts, but we use them as well in our homes. Some from the class have entered the local fairs.” Mrs. Robles provides the materials and tools, and there is no charge. “But donations to the Mission and especially the Mission Archive Library are appreciated,” she said. Participants are encouraged to bring natural materials from their own gardens to weave and embellish the baskets, which include three types — coil baskets with rafia, coil baskets with pine needles and basic wicker baskets with or without handles. “We also make pottles, which are very early berry baskets and shaped like cones,” said Mrs. Robles, pointing out that all ancient civilizations produced baskets. “Baskets were used as containers for everything imaginable — food, clothing, seeds, storage and transport. I could talk for an hour about the history of baskets.” Asked about her own collection of the containers, she said, “I have only about 10 right now. I like to give them away, and I’ve made many that have ended up on the compost heap.”

The folding fan came to us in the 17th C from Asia, and was composed of the leaf, which is the visible and decorated part of the fan, and the support for the leaf (which is engineered to close the leaf) is called the monture. The folds are accomplished with the aid of sticks, and the oftendecorated ivory or wood or tortoise shell of the sticks were
topped with a guard. The anchor of the fan is the hinge at the bottom and called the head. The material that made up the sticks changed in the very late 19th C with the invention of celluloid, and then again in the 1920s with the invention of Bakelite. F.G.’s fan is painted and paper appliqued silk which had been
glued down in the late 18th C or early 19th C to paper. The outlines of the figures are tricked out in delicate sequins of gold — and believe me when I say these are not coated sequins as they are today, but real gold. The outfits of the lady and the gent are outlines in silver sequins, which are also the real metal. This fan has an Asian pedigree in its landscape design, but the applique work in paper shows a Western couple in a very Western horse-cart. The heads are done in painted paper, and applied to the fan, so the details of the faces are specific to a couple in a real historical time. This fan was more than likely a present to a lady from her lover who had ordered it “customized” with his and her faces. Perhaps the most interesting part of the costume design is the gent’s Regency style hat, with its upturned brim. From that, I can place a date of the fan to the very first years of the 19th C. The lady’s hairstyle is also indicative of the Regency style, a simple fichu with a wrap of pearls over her head. As the 19th C progressed, fans
became more ornate, and the simple elegance of this fan would have been out of style. By the Victorian era, masses of dyed ostrich features were applied to sticks of ivory or tortoise shell. These fans became much larger than the modest scale of F.G.’s fan, and were quite ostentatious. But because of the bio-degradable nature of feathers, few of these ostrich fans survive today, but we know of them through the painters of the French fashions of the 3rd quarter of the 19th C. The value of FG’s fan? A collector of Regency textiles (think Jan Austen fans — (no pun intended here) would pay $400 for this example.

Libra: You tend to be very intuitive, Libra, but today you could find your psychic abilities short-circuit. If you give readings, don’t schedule any for today. This isn’t to say your abilities are blocked, but they aren’t as dependable as they usually are. Likewise, your imagination isn’t as reliable either. Don’t worry. This is just typical writer’s or artist’s block. You’ll be back to normal by tomorrow. Scorpio: Some rather upsetting news about a friend could come to you today, Scorpio, probably over the phone. This could be the truth, but more likely the facts have been distorted in the retelling. In fact, what you’re hearing may actually be nothing more than gossip. Phone someone who might know what’s really going on, preferably the friend you heard about, and check the facts before driving yourself crazy. Sagittarius: Today you could receive a lucky career break of some kind that brings some extra money your way, Sagittarius. The downside is that you might have to put in many extra hours. Your good fortune could cause temporary problems in your personal life. Your significant other and family members could be disgruntled. Point out that it may be inconvenient now, but everyone will be better off in the long run. Capricorn: An unexpected visit from someone who lives far away is likely to throw your schedule off kilter, Capricorn. Even though you’ll be glad to see your friend, the visit could require a lot of calls to break appointments and postpone meetings. Once that’s done, however, you’ll have a good visit. You and your friend should each have a lot to report. You’ll talk for hours. Relax and have some fun! Aquarius: An unexpected financial setback could have you reeling at first, Aquarius. Perhaps an emergency, such as a toothache or car breakdown, requires a substantial expenditure that you hadn’t planned for. You can probably find a way to deal with the crisis. You may have resources to draw upon that you aren’t aware of now. Go over all your finances and you could be pleasantly surprised. Hang in there! Pisces: You could be feeling restless and frustrated due to a temporary separation from a partner, Pisces, perhaps a business partner but more likely a romantic one. Phone contact could be difficult as well, because you could both be busy and keep missing each other. Find something fascinating to do that will take your mind off the situation. Get together with friends and have some fun. The time will pass more quickly.

left, opens one heart. Your partner doubles, and the next player passes. What do you say? ANSWER: This case is close. In theory, your 11 points are enough for a jump to two spades, inviting game, but your king of hearts, trapped in front of the opening bidder, may be worthless. Many experts would jump anyway. I would reluctantly downgrade the hand and settle for a response of one spade. East dealer N-S vulnerable

Since 1981 I’ve written a monthly column for the ACBL’s magazine. Many have been “over-my-shoulder style. You listen in on my thoughts during a deal. Ninety of the best of these appear in “Play Bridge With Me, my 23rd book, just published. The deals are intermediate level; the focus is on logical thinking. At today’s four spades, I win the first heart in dummy and lead a diamond. I can’t risk losing an early trump finesse; I need a quick pitch for my heart loser. East wins the second diamond and returns a heart, and I win to discard dummy’s last heart on my high diamond. When I finesse in trumps, East wins and exits with a trump.

“Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a brokenwinged bird that cannot fly. — Langston Hughes
Aries: A rather disconcerting rumor about your job could reach your ears, Aries. Perhaps you’ll hear that the company is being sold or undergoing a shakeup in the hierarchy. You might get caught up in a frenzy of worry about whether or not you’ll stay on. Before jumping to any conclusions, phone someone who knows what’s going on and find out the truth. What you’ve heard is probably just gossip. Taurus: A number of great ideas either for new creative projects or enhancing ongoing ones could pop into your head during the day, Taurus. If you don’t write them down immediately, they could just as easily pop right out again, never to return! With all your responsibilities, you could have a rather frantic day as your mind constantly shifts from one focus to another. Stay with it. You can handle it. Gemini: A person with whom you work, probably a woman, could leave suddenly without notice or stated reason, Gemini. This could be confusing, and you might find yourself wondering if there are changes within the company that you know nothing about. Try to learn exactly why this person left. If you can’t ask him or her directly, discreetly ask someone who might know. It’s important, if nothing else, for relieving your anxiety. Cancer: Someone you’ve wanted to hear from for a long time, perhaps an old friend who lives far away, could ring you up today while you’re out, Cancer. You’ll be happy to get the message, but it could result in a frustrating game of phone tag throughout the day. Don’t get so irritated you give up. Keep trying. You’ll eventually touch base, and you’ll be glad you did! Leo: Someone you’ve wanted to hear from for a long time, perhaps an old friend who lives far away, could ring you up today while you’re out, Cancer. You’ll be happy to get the message, but it could result in a frustrating game of phone tag throughout the day. Don’t get so irritated you give up. Keep trying. You’ll eventually touch base, and you’ll be glad you did! Virgo: A colleague or possibly a romantic partner could be in a rather touchy mood today, Virgo. Therefore, you might find this person difficult to deal with. You could get a bit irritated and wonder if this person is worth the aggravation he or she is causing you. Don’t do anything foolish. This mood will pass. Try to stay out of your Monday, November friend’s way, if possible.16, All 2015 should be back to normal by tomorrow.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.
