Researcher suspects sea otters act as ‘a conveyor belt of nutrients’ OTTERS

Continued from Page A1 biomass is located, near the surface, Mr. Peters’ next study will explore whether other marine animals contribute to nitrogen levels in the kelp forest canopy. Because sea otters forage for reef invertebrates and spend much of their time resting in the kelp forest, Mr. Peters suspects they act as “a conveyor belt of nutrients,” directly supplying their waste and urine into the canopy. While the UCSB team’s collaborators at the United States Geological Survey have studied otter activity at monthly intervals for 13 years, Mr. Peters told the News-Press that he and his team will observe them on a “finer scale.”

That will entail recording how long the animals stay in the kelp forest canopy day to day, and using models to estimate how much they excrete. Whereas the invertebrate study covered five coastal locations, the upcoming study will focus on an area just south of Point Conception. Sea otter populations in many other Southern California waters are still lacking in numbers, so it was necessary to select an area with a consistently sizeable population to determine whether or not the creatures have a significant impact on nutrient levels. “Sea otter populations are starting to recover in Southern California and that is a stable population,” Mr. Peters said. In addition to observing sea otters, Mr. Peters will lead a study that takes a closer look at spiny lobsters and

how their diet and the water temperature around them impact their nitrogen output. According to the release, lobsters along with sea stars have an “outsized effect in shaping the ecosystem” because of their predatory nature. Because their diets contain more protein than other invertebrates, they release more ammonium and nitrogen-rich compounds in their waste. The crustaceans gather together in dens during the day, which Mr. Peters suspects may result in more GOLETA herbivores moving into the reefs if 5757 Hollister Ave this leads to an increase in algae around the lobster dens. Mr. Peters said he hopes to conclude the sea otter study by fall of this year.

Baby Bok Choy This small winter green thrives this time of year. Averaging about 3-4 inches in length, it is praised for its sweet crisp white stems, becoming quite tender once cooked. The vibrant green leaves towards the top are somewhat reminiscent of spinach. Excellent both raw and cooked it is most commonly added to stir-fries, or Asian style soups. This week I incorporated my baby’s bok choy into tofu sushi rolls for the Fix of the Week. Also known as “white cabbage” this nutrient-packed vegetable is a member of the illustrious brassica family, sharing the likes of broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Currently available from the Her Family Farm and Moua Family Farm at both the Saturday Santa Barbara and Sunday Camino Real Farmers Markets. Price averages $2 each.

Japanese Sweet Potato These potatoes are recognized by their purplish pink-skin and cream colored flesh. Incredibly sweet they are excellent when roasted, steamed or stir-fried. I often enjoy them peeled and boiled with Yukon sweet potatoes, and then finally mashed for a really tasty sweet mashed potato dish that still retains the color of transitional mashed potatoes. Delivering pleasing notes of earthy flavor and a creamy texture, this is one the entire family will enjoy. Currently available from several local producers at the weekly Saturday Santa Barbara, Sunday Camino Real and Tuesday Santa Barbara farmers’ markets. Price averages $3 per pound.
Clover Sprouts These days, any time I prepare a sandwich, instead of lettuce I top my fixings with a hearty pile of these crisp and refreshing clover sprouts. This live food is also excellent when used to top a salad or rolled into a wrap. Possessing a nice underlying sweet flavor profile, they are brimming with essential vitamins and minerals as well as a good source of dietary fiber and protein. Sprouts are some of the most nutritionally packed foods you can consume. Currently available from Ojai Valley Greens at the recent Saturday Santa Barbara, Sunday Camino Real, Tuesday Santa Barbara and Thursday Carpinteria farmers markets. Price is $4 per half-pound. ucked between Montecito Village Grocery and Wells Fargo Bank in Montecito’s upper village is a new shop called Reflections, which features handmade shell artwork, including corals, wreaths, frames, ornaments, shadow boxes, driftwood pieces, even lamps. There are some orchid plants, too, but mainly the items are sea-inspired. It opened in December, and Dorothy Allen and Carole Shafran, longtime friends and neighbors in Carpinteria, are the owners of what they describe as “a long thin gallery” overlooking the village green. “I had never done anything like this before until Dottie invited me in to see her recently remodeled home, which was filled with seashell art,” said Ms. Shafran, who had retired from managing Montecito estates for many years. “In her master bathroom was a magnificent mirror framed with seashells. It was huge and weighed about 200 pounds. “Dottie told me that Scott Hogue had taught her how to make it. Scott, who died in 2018, was well known for his

spectacular floral designs and before that as the owner of the Epicurean restaurant in downtown Santa Barbara. I asked Dottie if she would teach me the skill, too.” Now, no longer retired, Ms. Shafran happily spends “hours and hours” creating the pieces in her home and garage when she isn’t working at the shop, which will re-open when the COVID-19 pandemic ends. “Dottie is a very good teacher,” she said. Before moving to Carpinteria, Mrs. Allen owned an accounting firm in Bakersfield and had nine aquariums. “I loved the hobby so much that when my husband was diagnosed with skin cancer, we moved to the coast and purchased the Ark Pet Shop in Carpinteria. I was the first person to bring saltwater fish and invertebrates to Santa Barbara,” she said. “I also owned Aquatic Gardens, an aquarium store on De La Vina Street, for many years and serviced two aquariums for client Scott Hogue
of Hogue and Company in Montecito. I watched him make shell designs every week, and he asked me to stick around in the evening and help him. “Over the next few years, I made many decorator pieces for friends and family, and a designer saw one and ordered it for her client.” Mrs. Allen, who continues to maintain saltwater aquariums for clients in Santa Barbara, Montecito and Ventura, said she “enjoys working with living aquariums and now with the beautiful remains once the shells and corals are left behind. I plan on opening an aquatic retail store in the upper village in the fall.” Shells for their handiwork and other items are purchased from a distributor in Los Angeles. “Some are more than 300 years old and extremely rare. Pieces are sourced from the bottom of the ocean floor, once they are no longer living or housing a live crustacean,” said Ms. Shafran, adding that she and her partner will also do custom artwork with a customer’s own shell collection. Prices for items at the shop range from $12 to $2,000. “We decided on the name Reflections because it reflects the ocean environment in which our lovely town is located,” said Ms. Shafran. Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

productive thing you could do today! LIBRA — Libra, you’re likely to want to retreat into your bedroom and slam the door today. You won’t feel like talking or socializing with anyone, not even those closest to you. Too much work could have you in a state of near exhaustion and almost total burnout, which means that getting some rest is probably the best thing you could do right now. Relax now, and get yourself going again tomorrow. SCORPIO — This might prove to be one of those days in which it’s very hard to get anything related to work or communication off the ground, Scorpio. You could find excuses to stop working more often than usual, particularly if it involves calling people on the phone. Don’t fight it. Take care of the most urgent tasks. The world won’t come to an end if you put the rest off a while. SAGITTARIUS — You might have planned to make a particular purchase today, Sagittarius, but a quick check of your financial situation could reveal that it would be better if you waited until your next payday. This could prove disappointing and frustrating, but look at it this way - you’ve waited this long for this item. It isn’t urgent, so waiting a little longer certainly won’t hurt. Do something else today. CAPRICORN — A lack of physical and mental energy as well as motivation could have you in a lethargic mood today, Capricorn. You won’t feel like doing much of anything. You might get extremely irritated at the thought of having to work in any way. It might be a good idea to go to a movie in the evening, preferably a thriller or action movie. This will get your juices flowing again. AQUARIUS — Usually you enjoy talking with others, Aquarius, but today you won’t even want to answer the phone. Your physical stamina and mental energy are low, and you could feel out of sorts. It might help if you go for a walk sometime in the afternoon. You won’t want to waste your evening lying around the house. Get the endorphins going and then go to a movie. You’ll soon be your old self again! PISCES — A group of friends might want you to go out with them today, Pisces, but you probably won’t feel up to it. Your financial situation could also require a little belt-tightening now, so you may not feel you can justify the expense. In any case, you aren’t going to want to spend the evening alone. Invite a friend or love partner over to watch a movie with you.
Since 1981 I’ve written a monthly column for the ACBL’s magazine. Many have been “over-my-shoulder” style. You listen in on my thoughts during a deal. Ninety of the best of these appear in “Play Bridge With Me,” my 23rd book, just published. The deals are intermediate level; the focus is on logical thinking. At today’s four spades, I win the first heart in dummy and lead a diamond. I can’t risk losing an early trump finesse; I need a quick pitch for my heart loser. East wins the second diamond and returns a heart, and I win to discard dummy’s last heart on my high diamond. When I finesse in trumps, East wins and exits with a trump.

HOROSCOPE
ARIES — Today you could feel full of energy and eager to get out for some exercise, Aries, but other responsibilities might threaten to keep you from doing it. The resulting frustration could zap all your energy and put you in a lethargic mood. Don’t fall into this trap! Get the most urgent tasks done and then get the exercise you need. This way, you can recoup both your physical and mental energy. TAURUS — Your energy is probably pretty low today, Taurus. You won’t feel like socializing, nor will you feel like staying in and reading or watching TV. Chances are you won’t know what to do with yourself all day. Under these circumstances, the best thing to do is find a distraction. Go work out, read a thrilling book, go to a funny movie. Get your mind off your lethargy and it could well disappear. GEMINI — Career and financial goals could seem completely stalled, Gemini, and this could have you depressed, frustrated, and in something of a panic. Don’t fall into this trap. This isn’t a permanent condition. You’ll be back on track in a few days. In the meantime, be good to yourself. Go to your favorite restaurant, buy yourself a present, or spend the afternoon in a bookstore. If nothing else, you’ll feel better. CANCER — A colleague could be in a very bad mood, Cancer, and therefore not the easiest person in the world to deal with. In fact, today he or she could resist working at all, and you might feel obligated to take up the slack. Only do it if the tasks are urgent. It isn’t fair to you to have to do someone else’s job. Don’t feel guilty if you leave it unfinished. LEO — Plans to go away on vacation or perhaps a business trip could be put on hold today, Leo. Events you might have been scheduled to attend could be temporarily postponed. This could leave you feeling somewhat at a loss because you’d planned to be away and now you don’t know what to do with yourself in the meantime. Be your usual ingenious self and you’ll find something! Go to it! VIRGO — This isn’t a good day to visit the racetrack, Las Vegas, or any store that sells lottery tickets. Stay away from the stock market, too, Virgo. Speculation of any kind now could be risky at best and disastrous at worst. Romance is also likely to be blocked today, Monday, November 2015 since you’re probably 16, feeling a bit lethargic and not very sociable. Read a good book. That’s the most

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
