COVID-19 pandemic means changes at Santa Ynez seniors community

t was a different world before the COVID-19 pandemic. Back then, like other retirement communities, the Golden Inn & Village in Santa Ynez was open to the public, and you could walk in and smell the food in the kitchen. You could enter the communal dining room and hear the rising volume of conversations and laughter. You could see the smiles on the faces of seniors. Their world is quieter now. And the dining room sits empty. Residents at the Santa Ynez facility for low-income seniors are eating alone or with their spouses in their apartments. They retrieve boxes of Golden Inn & Village’s delicious and healthy lunches and bring them back to their rooms. The food’s the same. The experience isn’t. “Residents have all developed such great friendships and relationships, and not being able to socialize at this time has been difficult on all of them,” Rona Barrett, who built her career as a national entertainment journalist, told the News-Press. Known for her TV work and interviewing stars as big as John Wayne, Ms. Barrett is the founder, president and CEO of The Rona Barrett

Foundation. That’s the nonprofit that built and continues to support the Golden Inn & Village, which opened in 2016 under a partnership with the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara. The facility serves low-income seniors who range in age from 62 to their 90s. More than 60 people live there today. Are the residents feeling scared during the pandemic? “I don’t know if the word is ‘scared.’ I would say ‘concerned’ is a better way of describing it,” Ms. Barrett said. Ms. Barrett said the residents are doing well physically during the COVID-19 pandemic, but there’s a degree of sadness that came after restrictions on public gatherings. “There was a certain darkness that fell over this very pretty, sunny place,” she said. “We weren’t used to it.” In addition to the temporary suspension of communal dining, there have been cancellations of exercise classes and events, she said. “There have been a lot of adjustments every single day as something new is told to us and something new is asked of us.” As part of the population that is the most vulnerable to the novel coronavirus, the seniors have restrictions on their lives. But like the rest of the world, they’re

“Residents have all developed such great friendships and relationships, and not being able to socialize at this time has been difficult on all of them,” said Rona Barrett, founder, president and CEO of The Rona Barrett Foundation. The nonprofit built and has supported the Golden Inn & Village.

finding ways to adapt. Ms. Barrett said family members and friends are no

longer allowed to visit the Golden Inn & Village, which closed its doors to the public during the pandemic. The complex now only allows doctors, nurses, licensed caregivers and the facility’s essential personnel to enter. Instead of visiting the facility, Ms. Barrett, who at age 83 is part of the vulnerable population, checks regularly with the staff by phone. Ms. Barrett said the residence’s seniors are staying connected with families and friends through phone calls and texts, emails, FaceTime, Skype, etc. “I would say the technology has given us real joy because it has allowed us to stay in touch with people across the country — North, South, East and West,” she said. The residents also may walk around the 7.3-acre Golden Village & Inn site and eat outside on the property as long as they maintain social distancing. “They can no longer take a walk into a market or go shopping,” Ms. Barrett said, but added they can call the Golden Inn & Village’s office with requests for things such as drugstore items. The facility’s communal living room still has its big-screen TV, but if residents go there to watch it, they must sit at least six feet apart, Ms. Barrett said. That rules out any special movie nights for a large crowd.

As she watches the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Barrett is thinking about the eventual return to normalcy and the future. Plans call for adding another building on the property. And Ms. Barrett would like to expand the program of three lunches a week, which came about because of a request by residents, to three meals a day, seven days a week. For now, the emphasis remains on making lunch a great meal for seniors. “I can’t say we can give you a filet mignon every day,” Ms. Barrett said. “We have all kinds of wonderful meats, salads, soups and vegetables.” Everything from pork chops to barbecued hot dogs, hamburgers and tacos. And the food has been healthy, with an emphasis on low-salt, lowfat, low-sugar and low-cholesterol choices, along with meals specifically tailored for residents with dietary restrictions, Ms. Barrett said. Seniors are still getting the quality food, and Ms. Barrett has plans for the day shelter-in-place restrictions are lifted. “I’m not exactly sure what we will do, but I’m guaranteeing we will have a giant celebration.” Email: dmason@newspress.com

very year, more and more books on happiness are published, and every year, more and more people go deeper into their depression, because they do not see themselves as happy. They don’t remember or know what it feels like, and instead they now feel guilty that they aren’t as happy as everyone says they should be. This is really a sad state of emotional affairs. The books, blogs, YouTube videos, and advice columns will tell you that if you meditate, visualize, exercise, journal, stay busy, help others, eat healthy, read, and increase your intimacy every day, then you too can be happy. For me, that list would take the whole day, and I wouldn’t have the energy at the end of it to even contemplate sex. The simple truth is that no one can be happy all the time. That doesn’t mean you have to be sad, angry, or depressed the rest of the time but that you can find a middle ground called contentment. This middle ground is a good place to be mentally and emotionally, and spending time there is a healthy choice. Contentment is some place between satisfied and peaceful. It isn’t giddy or overflowing — it simply is there. When you are in that place, the stuff of life can be going on around you, but you don’t need to allow it to get you twisted up inside. You can be at peace when you pay your bills or deal with something that broke or a child who has forgotten their homework — and take it all in stride. And that, my friends, is a very nice way to go through life. I find contentment in walks and in writing, in talking with my partner and reminding each other that our life is good, despite temporary setbacks or scary moments. I can overreact to just normal life stuff, and because I know this about myself, I can temper my reactions and respond differently. Doing this relieves a lot of stress and will keep you from losing your state of contentment. Right at this moment, things around me are still a little out of my control — such is life — but I am feeling pretty darn good, because I am actively living my purpose and I can quietly revel in that. The files and folders that need organizing for taxes are still going to be there, laughing at me when I finish this piece, but I will laugh right back. This is because I am now content, and that feeling will last the whole day through. You can do the same. If there is even one thing that puts you in a state of contentment — and you do it regularly and early enough each day — it will help you through any challenges you may have to face later. I don’t want to make my life any more difficult than it already is, so I choose contentment, knowing that from time to time, I’m going to get pulled out of my peaceful place and into the muck of reality. What gets me through the icky parts is knowing that I can eventually return to that place where I know it really is all okay. ARIES — Today’s planetary configuration will give you a strong urge to be out and about, Aries, but responsibilities could keep you at home or the office. Perhaps you’re waiting for a delivery or an important phone call or visitor. This could be boring and rather tedious for you today. Find something to do that engrosses you, even if it’s only reading or catching up on paperwork. There’s no point in just twiddling your thumbs! TAURUS — Are your views about certain intellectual or spiritual matters slowly changing, Taurus? If so, you may not be all that comfortable with the changes. Traditional values and ideas could seem especially attractive to you today, so your resistance could be greater than normal. Yet you know you can’t stay the same way forever. Give yourself a break today. Tomorrow you’ll be back in the groove and on your way to transforming. GEMINI — Business success may have come your way, Gemini, but today you could find yourself feeling a little sad and wondering why, since there’s no real reason to feel this way. What’s going on is probably, first of all, a letdown, since your brain is no longer churning out the endorphins. Second, you may be wondering where you go from here. Only you can decide that. Set a new goal and move on. CANCER — Today you could feel torn between the desire to get a little exercise and a powerful inclination to curl up in your favorite chair and catch up on some reading, Cancer. There isn’t any reason why you can’t do both. Go out for a brisk walk and then reach for a favorite book when you return. The key isn’t giving up on one, but attaining a balance between the two. LEO — Do you have the uncomfortable feeling that you’ve forgotten something but you have no idea what it is, Leo? Are you haunted by the memory of a seemingly insignificant past event, but can’t figure out why? It isn’t a good idea to obsess over either. You’ll remember whatever it is eventually. You’ll soon realize the significance of the memory. Your subconscious is trying to tell you something. You can’t rush it, so relax! VIRGO — If you’ve been thinking about starting a new creative project, Virgo, don’t try to do it today. Friends and family could vie for your attention and distract you. Other responsibilities could interfere with your desire to get going on it now. Don’t hesitate to try to come up with ideas, but you might have to wait until tomorrow to start the work. Tomorrow you should be

HOROSCOPE raring to go. Be patient! LIBRA — Business might be going very well for you, Libra, but intense changes on the job could have you feeling stressed. Delays in starting new projects could prove frustrating. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that this is going to be a trend. All should be brought back into focus tomorrow. Go to the gym tonight and work off some frustration. You’ll be fresh in the morning. Hang in there! SCORPIO — Have you been planning a vacation to a distant place, Scorpio? Unexpected, discouraging glitches could interfere with your plans, which could have you thinking that you’ll just cancel the trip. You might be tempted to pick up the phone and do it. Take no action today. The entire situation should be straightened out by tomorrow, and you’ll look forward to your trip again. Stay focused and don’t do anything rash. SAGITTARIUS — Money matters could have you descending into a state of pure gloom, Sagittarius. On the surface it might seem like you’ll never be able to sort through all the paperwork, but you will. Don’t give up. Stay focused on the task and take one step at a time. Before you know it, your efficiency and practicality should have it sorted out and behind you. Cheer up, and plan a great evening! CAPRICORN — Is your sweetheart out of town, Capricorn? If so, you’re probably feeling a bit lonely and insecure. You need to ignore those fantasies of your beloved out on the town having a great time with lots of glamorous people. Your friend is most likely as bored as you are, either transacting business or fulfilling family obligations. Relax, find something to do, and the time will pass before you know it. AQUARIUS — You probably won’t feel like working today, Aquarius. You may not be tired, but you’re probably bored, restless, and unable to focus. It’s best to concentrate on routines or mundane chores you can do automatically on days like this. Put on your headphones. Take a long, leisurely lunch or perhaps brunch with friends. It’s important to have some fun. Think of it as an exercise to balance your usually serious self! PISCES — Love matters could appear to be moving far more slowly than you’d like, Pisces. Both you and your romantic interest may be overloaded with responsibilities now and unable to see each other much. It’s frustrating, but you’ll get through it. In the meantime, don’t let your insecurities get the better of you. Just because your friend is busy doesn’t mean that your relationship is on the rocks. Be patient!

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.
