After “Grease,” her hits included “Xanadu” and “Magic” from her movie with Mr. Kelly, as well as the upbeat “Physical” (1981).Butthose interviewed for this story agreed that despite the fame, Ms. Newton-John remained down-to-earth and genuine. Ms. Gordon, the Montecito friend who called Ms. NewtonJohn “a true angel,” recalled meeting her through their mutual friend, movie and TV star Jane Seymour.

Mr. Reed noted Mrs. DeVorzon found it easy to persuade Ms. Newton-John to help Unity Shoppe, the Santa Barbara-based nonprofit that helps the less fortunate.“Assoon as Jelinda described what Unity did, she said, ‘I want to be part of that. Ms. NewtonJohn sang at them in the 1990s and the 21st century, and Mr. Reed said some of her songs were the hits from “Grease.” Ms. Newton-John sang “Christmas Never Felt Like This Before” live in 1996 at a Unity Shoppe telethon, pouring her heart into the lyrics — something she was known to do. but we had a scaled back version,” he said. “As we came out of isolation, we had the event, but we didn’t have our community partners with us who make this event great by informing families of services they offer throughout theButyear.”onSaturday morning, it was a different story. An estimated 900 youths and their parents were there, and the kids got to pick the colorful backpacks they wanted. The News-Press watched as one boy immediately chose one with a “Spider-Man” design. Now in its 10th year, the “Tools for School” event provided school supplies and backpacks for lowincome children and families in the Santa Barbara area. During this event, HACSB youth and families received a free backpack, school supplies, and learned about valuable resources and services for them and their families. “It felt absolutely wonderful compared to the COVID years,” Mr. Fredericks said. “Being back in person, interacting with families, is so hopeful for my team of colleagues at the housing authority — being able to see families again interacting with them and checking in on them and seeing what they need.” Agencies attending included: Family Service Agency, Supportive Services Program, Family Support Services, Santa Barbara Unified School DistrictELAC and DLI Programs, Santa Barbara Unified School District- PEAC Program, CalSOAP, Santa Barbara Public Library, United Way of Santa Barbara County, Future Leaders of America, CALM, Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, Metropolitan Transit District, CommUnify-HEAP and Gateway Educational Services, and Santa Barbara City College. “Everyone was there with smiling faces ready to help,” Mr. Fredericks said. “It harkens to me what community service is all about, helping people. It’s so nice seeing the smiling faces of kids with backpacks and knowing they are set for the year. It was a really joyful occasion at least for us, and the kids that were there, getting their school supplies, happy and ready for the school year..” “With adults and kids, we probably had about 900 people. We wouldn’t be able to do this event without our funding sponsors,” said Mr. Fredericks. Union Bank helped underride the cost of funding for backpacks, and First 5 Santa Barbara County provided books for below school age children, benefiting them with books to jumpstart reading. “As the housing authority, people look at us as providers of affordable housing, and housing is foundational,” Mr. Fredericks said. “But we look at ourselves as more than just housing, we don’t just turn over the keys to an affordable place to live. We provide support service to all of our families, and that includes the youth and helping them start school off ready with all their school supplies puts them on a path toward success. “That is what we want to see for all our residents: Pathways to selfsufficiency, and it can start at a young age with the youth.” email; kzehnder@newspress.com

THE WILDCARD The media quickly rose to the occasion as the summer of ’97 ended with a bang — a bang with a resounding echo heard around the world.Newspapers sold so many copies in the two weeks following Princess Diana’s death, circulation records were broken — and newsprint mills cleanedDiana’sout.charities would reap more donations in four weeks than the previous four years. The world would have a good cathartic cry; in Britain, there was mass-mourning to the point of hysteria.Themonarchy would suffer a blow, its sensitivity publicly questioned. But in the long-term the royal family’s popularity would rise out of the quagmire into which it had sunk even before Diana’s death, if only because Britain’s future king — William — is saintly Diana’s son. Thanksgiving, just in time for the bustling Christmas gift season. Described by its publisher as “an intimate and heartfelt memoir,” we wonder if Harry will address the circumstances of his mother’s death and, through subtle nuances, reveal his mindset on this delicate matter.TheDuke of Windsor, another royal exile who a century ago abdicated his throne “for the woman he loved,” was tempted, soon after his marriage to Wallis Simpson and the commencement of what would become their permanent banishment from Britain, to write a book with Compton Mackenzie (a popular British author of the time). But, according to Andrew Lownie in his newly published book “Traitor King,” “the Duke withdrew … realizing it best he not be seen to cooperate with any writer.” Which means Prince Harry is crossing a line even the very vain and vexed Edward VIII knew better than to cross. And if Harry is prepared to cross that line, one wonders how far he is prepared to go with revelations about the Royal Family he abandoned for a new life in Montecito.
DODI THE CAREER CAD I have my own theory about what took place in the early hours of Aug. 31, 1997. Suffice to say, it’s not pretty, but it is mine to keep. So rather than theorize and risk getting gaslit like Martha Mitchell (who was not delusional but spot on about Watergate all along), let’s simply take a stroll down memory lane and assess the facts so that you, dear reader, can make up your own mind about a tragedy that befell a beautiful young princess way before her time. Remember, she was only 36. Let’s start with Emad “Dodi” Fayed, who was 42, the cocainesnorting do-little spoiled brat of a billionaire’s son who left a trail of bad debt in his wake and was under investigation by the IRS at the time of his death. (He owed $93,053 in back taxes.) Or as Vanity Fair put it, Dodi had “a reputation for reneging on commitments and creditors… failing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in rent, wrecking rental properties, selling film rights he didn’t own and neglecting to pay attorneys, doctors, repairmen, and even his projectionist.”In1994,American Express sued Dodi for $116,890. Courts were clogged with other such creditor actions.Dodiwas the playboy son of Mohamed Al Fayed (the “Al” being a royal prefix that Fayed, from humble Egyptian origins, bestowed upon himself). I sort of knew Dodi in London, circa 1972-3. American teens hung out weekend nights at The Aristocrat, a pub on George Street in Marylebone. Dodi, about my age and ever the show-off, would park his show offish Trans Am Mustang on the curb directly outside the pub, on the prowl for underage American females, one right after the other. At first a cad cadet, Dodi graduated to career cad. I watched over a pint of lager as young Dodi matriculated.Theonething Dodi was good at, through much practice, was picking up and schmoozing girls. Most men would be intimidated by Princess Diana, which is something she herself complained about after her divorce from Prince Charles. But not Dodi, which would prove to be the secret of his success in romancing her. The powers-that-be in Britain’s (Church of England) Establishment watched in horror as Dodi, a Muslim, squired Diana around Europe, most especially (with media attention focused upon them) on his father’s yacht in the Med. It was getting serious. Very serious.Estranged from her former husband, Prince Charles, and most members of the royal family, Princess Diana appeared to take delight in overshadowing them as the center of attention wherever she went, whatever she was doing — resulting in endless page-one photographs. The media made Diana’s life miserable but its representatives, from lowly paparazzi to senior news executives, adored her for providing them much copy and making all involved up and down the food chain fabulously rich. Dodi, who met Diana through his father (then the owner of Harrods, London’s swankiest department store), was already engaged to an American woman named Kelly Fisher. But Mohamed had other plans: He knew the only thing his son was any good at was charming the pants off women. As such, he contrived to play Cupid, putting his yacht, his Gulfstream IV jet, his Hotel Ritz in Paris — and other resources at Dodi’s disposal — to woo Diana as part of the old man’s ongoing quest to further establish himself as part of The Kelly,Establishment.alreadysporting a diamond-and sapphire engagement ring, got jilted by Dodi in a phone call two days before their planned marriage as he, preparing to become engaged to Diana instead, decided on a $205,000 diamond encrusted ring from Repossi in Monte Carlo, to be collected (after being customized) at the jeweler’s swank Paris boutique a few weeks later. On the day before they died, Dodi and Diana inspected the Duke of Windsor’s old digs, the villa at 4 Route du Champ d’Entrainement (leased by daddy Mohamed) in the Bois de Boulogne, as a potential future home for themselves and her sons, Princes William and Harry, the so-called “heir and spare.” Mr. Al Fayed was thrilled. If Diana married his son, Mohamad would become stepfather to the future King of England. The poetry was too perfect. And perhaps unacceptable to some, who perceived Diana and Dodi’s expected engagement as the most unholy of matrimonies.
THE AL-22 FLASHBULB The Paris paparazzi, perhaps the most pernicious in the world, could presumably be exploited as unwitting accomplices to the plan. (Despite France’s stringent privacy laws, it is ironic that the French legal system permits homegrown paparazzi immense flexibility to intrude upon the privacy of visiting foreigners — so long as their intrusive photographs are published outside of France.) Using paparazzi as a cover, an assassin — maybe working for an entity wishing to embarrass the British powers-that-be, whom everyone would naturally blame — would have initially camouflaged himself among the mob of motorcycle-riding photographers. The assassin — way ahead of the pack due to a diversion contrived at the Ritz Hotel, from which Dodi and Diana emerged — would have been equipped with an AL-22 flashbulb, which, with its 110,000 lumens (candle power) produces a flash so bright, it renders anyone in who sees it in a dark environment temporarily blinded for at least 20 seconds.Notdesigned for photography, the AL-22 flashbulb was once commercially available as a defense weapon for homeowners to discharge at nighttime home invaders as a means of providing time to escape while such criminals struggled to regain their vision. After nine hours of paparazzi harassment, Dodi was fed up and eager to manifest his manhood. “Step on it!” he supposedly ordered his driver, Henri Paul (acting head of security at the Ritz) who was not sloshed at the wheel as widely depicted (“Drunk as a Pig” screamed the newspaper headline), having drunk only two alcoholic beverages (Ricard pastis) much earlier in the evening, during which he disappeared for several hours, holed up somewhere with someone (still unidentified) who gave him $2,000 in cash. In the previous six months, Mr. Paul had banked other unexplained earnings, perhaps from whomever he mysteriously signaled with a wave of his hand down the road just before leading Dodi and Diana from the back entrance of the Ritz to their death trap. In pursuit by supposed paparazzi, Mr. Paul gunned the pedal up to 80 miles an hour as he approached the Pont d’Alma tunnel. (The irony: Dodi was said to be obsessive about safety and terrified of Surveillancespeed.)cameras would normally record comings and goings through the tunnel, 24/7. Alas, all cameras had been mysteriously switched off. Ahead of the vehicle, just as Dodi’s Mercedes entered the dark tunnel, someone discharged the AL-22 flashbulb directly at his windshield, temporarily blinding Mr. Paul and causing him to lose control of his vehicle, which then crashed into a pillar, killing him and Dodi instantly. Diana had not been wearing a seatbelt because, mysteriously, it was broken. But she survived the crash. However, it took an astonishing one hour and 43 minutes to remove Diana from the unobstructed backseat, place her in an ambulance and transport her to a hospital. Consequently, soon after delayed arrival, Diana succumbed to her injuries. (Jeez, don’t know if you’ve noticed but the word mysteriously crops up an awful lot.) Dare we add, three years later it was discovered that Diana had left handwritten notes for both her butler and lawyer forecasting that she would be murdered in a way that it would look to be a car accident?Mohamed Al Fayed has always maintained that his son and Diana were murdered. His views were made known in a 2011 documentary, “Unlawful Killing,” presented at the Cannes Film Festival, banned in Britain, and later withdrawn from distribution in the U.S. though it can sometimes be found on YouTube. Later this week, the Discovery+ channel will commence streaming their new four-part television documentary called “The Diana Investigations.”Intheaftermath of Diana’s death, several witnesses mysteriously (there it is again) disappeared, not unlike what transpired during the years following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. But the strangest death associated with Diana’s demise was the case of James Andanson, a photographer who had relentlessly trailed the princess around Europe for a month before her accident and, though he denied officially being at the Pont d’Alma Tunnel on that fateful night, confirmed later to friends that he wasInpresent.2007,Mr. Andanson was shot in the head. Rep. Tim Burchett, R-District 2, said the bill would increase the national debt by $146 billion. “You never reduce burdens — or inflation — by increasing taxes $745 billion. You simply create more government that will never go away,” Rep. Burchett said. “Democrats need to learn a lesson or two from Tennessee, where we reduced taxes and regulations and now have record surpluses and thriving businesses.”

SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS SUNDAY, AUGUST 14, 2022 A7NEWS
(The Center Square) – Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey issued an executive order on Friday directing the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs to fill the gaps in the Yuma border wall starting immediately. “Arizona has had enough,” Gov. Ducey said in a news release. “We can’t wait any longer. The Biden administration’s lack of urgency on border security is a dereliction of duty.“For the last two years, Arizona has made every attempt to work with Washington to address the crisis on our border. Time and time again we’ve stepped in to clean up their mess. Arizonans can’t wait any longer for the federal government to deliver on their delayed promises.” The executive order came days after the Biden administration abandoned the Remain in Mexico policy. The governor’s office called the Biden administration’s decision “misguided.” It added that the White House has failed to secure the border, allowing transnational criminal organizations to bring more drugs over the southern border.“Our border communities are being used as the entryway to the United States, overwhelming law enforcement, hospitals, nonprofits and residents,” Gov. Ducey said in the release. “It’s our responsibility to protect our citizens and law enforcement from this unprecedented crisis. With the resources and manpower in the right places, our Border Patrol and law enforcement will be better equipped to do their jobs well and prevent cartels from exploiting our communities. That’s exactly what our barrier mission will do.” Arizona will use 60 doublestacked shipping containers reinforced with concertina wire at the top to secure this vulnerable part of the border. The double-stacked containers with wire will reach 22 feet high. The governor’s office said the state will use 800-pound, 9-by-40feet containers. For reference, the Trump administration’s border walls were 30 feet tall. Construction to fill this 1,000foot gap began Friday morning.
The bill will add 87,000 agents to the Internal Revenue Service, install price requirements for some health care and provide tax credits for green energy. “For two years, the Biden administration and congressional Democrats have forced trillions in borrowing and spending, onerous new regulations, and big government overreach on the American People,” said Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, R-District 3. “Today’s vote in the House of Representatives is a continuation of Democrats’ radical policies that have led to record high inflation and energy prices and decimated our economy. Americans want inflation lowered, affordable energy and gas, our police funded, and the border secured. Democrats’ bill does none of this.” The bill includes tax credits for manufacturing solar panels, wind turbines, batteries and green energy technologies and places caps on prescription drug prices. And the bill’s summary says there are “no new taxes on families making $400,000 or less and no new taxes on small businesses — we are closing tax loopholes and enforcing the tax code.” “I am voting against this fundamentally flawed and defective package because families, farmers, and small businesses across West Tennessee and across the nation need real solutions to these problems, not more taxes and not more government spending,” said Rep. David Kustoff, R-District 8. Rep. David Cohen, D-District 9, said he believes the bill will lower costs for regular families, lower health insurance costs, reduce the federal deficit and require corporations to “pay their fair share.”“For the first time, the United States will be on track to meet its ambitious climate goals and lead the world’s clean energy economy, which will spur American innovation, create good paying jobs, lower energy costs, strengthen our security, and combat the climate crisis,” Rep. Cohen said. “I believe this Congress could go down in history as one of the most consequential for American families since Roosevelt’s New Deal.”

contractor Ashbritt is building the barrier. A 25-man team will likely complete the project over the weekend.Theproject will cost the state $6 million.“National security starts with border security. Biden’s border crisis deteriorates daily while the White House is silent,” Jonathan Lines, Yuma County supervisor, said in the news release. “Border communities like Yuma bear the burden of a broken border while narcotics poison our youth, human smuggling rises and mass amounts of migrants wear on our nonprofits. Beyond that, the seizure of counterfeit products at our ports of entry affects American businesses. Gov. Ducey has been a consummate partner, coordinating and leading state and local resources to do what the federal government won’t: secure theTheborder.”Yuma Sector of the U.S.Mexico border has been busy over the past year. It saw 235,230 migrant encounters from October 2021 to June 2022, according to a news release from the governor’s office.“The Yuma community does not have the infrastructure to handle thousands of people crossing the border in need of food, shelter and medical services,” Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls said in the news release. “The surge of migrants the federal government has allowed to trek over the border has the grave potential to greatly impact and strain our community. Washington must send a clear message that this is not the way to immigrate to our country. Too many migrants make the treacherous journey that puts their lives in danger and exposes them to exploitation by cartels. “Yuma has experienced the worst of the border crisis,” the mayor said. “We’re grateful to Governor Ducey for ingraining himself in this issue and finding solutions.”Drugshave also made their way across the border. So far this fiscal year, more than 2,400 pounds of fentanyl have been seized in Arizona’s sectors. Fentanyl overdoses are now the leading cause of death for people 19 and younger in Pima County, according to the governor’s office. “The White House lacks a sense of urgency and detail while the border crisis gets worse every day. In Arizona, we put our money where our mouth is,” Tim Roemer, Arizona Department of Homeland Security director and the state’s chief information security officer, said in the news release. “The brave men and women of law enforcement need this support so they can conduct their important work catching the people who don’t want to get caught and stopping lethal drugs from coming over the border. Gov. Ducey once again showed he’ll take action to secure the border and give law enforcement every resource in the state’s power.”

By DAVID BEASLEY THE CENTER SQUARE CONTRIBUTOR Dip in oil production ‘part of any normal business cycle,’ industry group says
The drop in U.S. crude oil production in May is “part of any normal business cycle,” according to one New Mexico industry group. Crude oil production in the U.S. dropped in May by 0.5%, the lowest level since February, Reuters reported. Production in New Mexico saw an even greater drop, falling by 0.7%.“After incredible growth in the Permian Basin over the last few months, the small drop is related to weakening domestic demand, rising inventories and a drop in demand for oil as Americans drive less as summer comes to an end, plus the mounting fears of a recession,” Joe Vigil, spokesman for the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association, told The Center Square. He pointed out that the state recently saw big increases in oil“Theproduction.previous incredible growth greatly outweighs the small decline,” Mr. Vigil said. “Growth and declines are part of any normal business cycle.” The economic impact of the May drop will be minimal, though, according to Mr. Vigil.

Our industry’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our operations continues through new technologies, innovation and investment – not excessive government regulations. “ Production in the U.S. dropped in May even as demand for U.S. crude and petroleum products increased to the highest level since March, Reuters reported. Crude oil production increased in some states in May, such as North Dakota, which saw a 17.1% increase. At the same time, output in Texas dropped 1% to the lowest level since February, according to Reuters.

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great test of your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start you off. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1 - 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid. these one letter each square, form six ordinary words.

B.C.) was a Greek philosopher and the founder of Stoicism. (Zeno of Elea, who formulated the famous paradoxes that vexed mathematicians for centuries, was a different Zeno; he lived in the 5th Century B.C.) If you told a Stoic that his house would burn down next week, he would say he didn’t care; it didn’t matter. That attitude might help your composure at the bridge table, but it won’t do much for your scores. In today’s deal, South leaped to four spades over East’s one club. True, North was a passed hand, but preempting with such a strong hand was questionable. North might have held 9 4 3, J 7 6 5, K Q 4, K 4 2, or hands where North-South’s best contract was 3NT. West led a club, and East took the K-A and led a third club. South won and cashed the ace of trumps; if East-West had followed, South could have reached dummy with the nine to pitch two diamonds on the A-K of hearts. When instead West showed out, South took two more high trumps and then led the ace and a low diamond, ducking in dummy. No luck: East took the ten and king for down one. A Stoic would accept that result with resignation. Would you be satisfied to be minus 100 points? After South takes the ace of trumps and sees the 3-0 break, he should lead the king — and then a low trump; he must hope that East’s distribution was 3-4-3-3. Sure enough, East must win and lead a red card to South’s advantage.IfEasthad four clubs — his shape was 3-3-3-4 — South could still make four spades, but only by leading a low trump at Trick Four. That would be a remarkable play. North dealer Both

A ccording to the Mayo Clinic, youresultthoughts“suicidalaretheoffeelinglikecan’tcopewhen you’re faced with what seems to be an overwhelming life situation.” The tension and sadness of anxiety and depression have led many people to making the ultimate mistake of stepping out of life before their time. This is something that happens to people in all walks of life, although we do hear more about “celebrity suicides” than those of us regular people.Howdo any of us get to that place of even having suicidal thoughts, much less acting on them? What can we do to keep our balance and perspective?Ifyougeteasily emotionally triggered, you may find yourself often thrown off-balance. You’re easily triggered because you may not yet have healed from a traumatic episode, or it may be that you’re a highly sensitive person with a good memory who can’t let go yet. As a result, you may suffer from panic attacks, anxiety and depression, but the situation is not hopeless. You can learn to cope with the right tools. Here’s a quick case study: A wealthy landlord in his 50s would have an anxiety attack if anything went wrong at any of his properties, and it did almost every day. Even though he was making more money than he needed, he worried about expenses like they were a medical diagnosis and ruined many days by overthinking, and he did consider taking his own life more than once.He did not have the tools to pull himself out of his own imaginary pit. It makes me wonder if Robin Williams and Anthony Bourdain had similar experiences. After a year of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and doing some serious homework like daily journaling, the landlord ended up having many more good days than bad. He also learned to understand his condition, which made it easier for him to slay the imaginary demons in his head. And that is a very important piece for anyone who is anxious or depressed to remember. What you are feeling is most likely not based on fact. It is a twisted version of a past trauma that has wormed its way into your psyche, but you can fight it and win. Please keep in your head that your feelings can come from altered brain hormoneschemistry, oreven a bad movie. These feelings do not represent reality. Most of us have had some experience with this happening to us as teenagers with raging hormones, and it can continue to happen to us supposed grown-ups too. It can also happen to the people we know and love, so keep an eye out for anyone in your circle who is showing signs of not caring about themselves anymore. I am not suggesting that you repress your feelings in any way, which can be harmful to your wellbeing. The best thing that we can all do is to learn to recognize our triggers. That way we can begin to avoid or at least tame them, so they don’t have so much power over us. If something happens to throw you off-balance, remind yourself that you tend to let situations like this overwhelm you, and allow yourself to slow down and take things one step at a time. Take advice when and where you need to. This simple methodology will save you from wasting your days over worrying about something that is not at all out of your locus of control. Learn to recognize and understand (but don’t repress) your feelings, and you will continue to stand in your power. Barton Goldsmith, Ph.D., is an award-winning psychotherapist and humanitarian. Don’t take California’s independent contractor crackdown to the national level
C alifornia truckers last month temporarily shut down the Port of Oakland California’sprotestingrefusal to let them remain independent contractors.Tensofthousands of independent truckers are now subject to California’s Assembly Bill 5, which punishes businesses that hire independent contractors to perform similar work as the business performs. This means trucking companies can’t hire self-employed truckers, newspapers can’t hire freelance writers, and software companies can’t hire independent contract programmers.Theseindependent truckers face a choice: Become trucking company employees, leave California or quit driving altogether.
they believe the only good jobs come with a boss, a W-2 and a name grandma can recognize on the paycheck. Such a plan would make it harder for independent contractors to find work, put businesses that contract with independent contractors at risk, and punish innovative businesses that connect self-employed workers to available projects.Theacting administrator of DOL’s Wage and Hour Division claims that misclassifying workers as “independent contractors” is “one of the most serious problems facing affected employees, employers and the U.S. economy.” Don’t tell that to the millions of businesses looking for workers or the families who can’t find baby formula. She announced that DOL wants to change its definition of independent contractors via rulemaking.
determination, and long suffering it takes in order to face a problem and overcome it, especially in today’s toxic social society.” “And your definition of troublemaker?” I asked. “A troublemaker is a person who causes difficulties, distress, worry and other problems, for others, especially one who does so habitually out of malice.” I’d never thought about the distinction between the two terms, but Christy has a point. “The term ‘troublemaker,’” she continued, “is used both for those that deserve it and those that don’t.“Those that deserve the term ‘troublemaker,’ ” Christy stressed, “are those who bring up a problem just to complain or make the problem worse. Those who don’t deserve being called ‘troublemaker’ are those who come with solutions and take personal risk. “I am not a troublemaker; I am a problem solver,” she said. “I did not create the trouble, I offered solutions for the trouble that had been created. It takes some courage and a lot of patience to look a problem square in the face and try to fix or overcome it.
shouldparadeFiestabeonStateStreet A farmer’s life DID Bonnie Donovan It felt good to bring back Fiesta. However, we missed the traditional value of State Street for the Historical Parade. It’s easy to dismiss tradition when inquiring what various tourists and youths think about the parade being on Cabrillo Boulevard rather than State Street, especially since tourists don’t know anything different, let alone asking the Cabrillo Boulevard businesses how they liked it. Tourists and youths are not tuned into tradition. They enjoy the spectacle, but they have no idea what they are missing.Someorganizers said they received great feedback on the location from the parade goers. “… The location was more spacious and open with the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other.” But we also noticed that the pacing of the parade was off with large gaps in between floats and equestrian groups, which stalled the momentum. Some other lessons were learned from the Fiesta Historical Parade of 2022. The parade route and the inherent ramifications weren’t clearly anticipated when moved to Cabrillo Boulevard. The parade street closures caused multiple freeway offramps to back traffic up onto the freeway for several exits. A reader said that they waited for 45 minutes trying to get off the MilpasEvenexit.theparticipants in the parade riding the floats were delayed in gridlock for an inordinate amount of time on Cabrillo Boulevard at Milpas St.Let’s consider the fact that when the parade is on Cabrillo, many more tourists and far fewer community members are in attendance. Whereas on State Street, it is attended by far more community members, while supporting the local businesses.Aspecial nod to Lynn Kirst whose regal presence graciously served our community as Saint Barbara, and to La Presidente Maria Cabrera with her husband, Francisco, faithfully by her side who so powerfully supported the true spirit of Fiesta this year when we sorely needed it. They are all called upon to represent this unique Fiesta celebration, tirelessly showing up for many events for several weeks. We are grateful that the traditional roles are carried through from Fiesta’s historical beginnings and leave a lingering effect. Thank you! Revisiting the Modoc Preserve: Did you know that not only Santa Barbara County is planning to remove trees in the Modoc Preserve for the bike path, but that the city of Santa Barbara just approved an additional 34 trees to be removed for the city’s connection to the county’s side? That totals 165 trees eradicated for just four (Castillo/Carrillo,proposalsnew police department, Modoc and Modoc Preserve). And we wonder where all the butterflies have gone. Are we really concerned about nature? We talk about everything being green, while all the green disappears. We don’t let nature be. We insist on nature being our vision, while we pick and choose what works for us. Does it? I now have a better understanding of what the problems truly are.” “And those problems are?” I wondered.“Thetwo main problems, as I see them, are, the lack of classroom discipline and respect for teachers, and that there are too many children in the Santa Barbara County school districts not learning up to grade level. It’s not even close. That is, after all, why I decided to run in the first place.”

To support these efforts, DOL hosted “listening sessions” to hear how interested parties wanted the independent contractor rules to change. The goal was to hear stories from disgruntled independent contractors to justify a new restrictive regulatory regime. DOL hoped the hundreds of satisfied workers who supported the last administration’s independent contractor rulemaking would remainUnfortunatelyquiet. for DOL, those small businessmen and women like their independent contractor status and overwhelmed the forums to share just how happy they are. Freelance journalists told of earning more money while assisting multiple publications. Financial advisers lauded the flexibility and ability to meet client needs; and translators noted the community benefit they can provide to customers of dozens of businesses who would otherwise go without services in their native tongue. These voices echo the sentiment of millions of independent contractors across the country. MBO partners last year found that 87% of independent contractors prefer independent contractor work. Flexibility makes independent work especially attractive to women, parents, caretakers, students and retirees. And independent work is often most helpful to women who are not able to take on full-time employment due to other time constraints. DOL should listen to these happy entrepreneurs and stop any regulation that makes it harder for the self-employed to earn their living. To do otherwise would force workers to sacrifice the flexibility they came to value during

A December 2020 report from American Transparency highlights how 103 Executive Agencies outside the Department of Defense spent $2.7 billion on guns, ammunition and military equipment between 2016 and 2019. The Department of Veterans Affairs spent $11.6 million on guns, ammunition, body armor, chemical weapons and military supplies. The Animal and Plant Inspection Service spent $3.9 million on much the same including unmanned aircraft. And even the Railroad Retirement Board spent $50,088 on guns, ammunition and similar gear.Isthis arming the federal agents, while taking guns away from citizens, a new safety measure thought out by “the president”? Investigative journalist Adam Andrzejewski, the founder of American Transparency, has been reporting on this since the Obama administration. It sure doesn’t make one feel protected, from what? The moral of this story is: If you own a gun, don’t give it up. It is your protection from invaders. Food for thought.
A s an avid cyclist at 80 years old, I want to respond to the opinion piece by Bonnie Donovan titled, “Don’t leave trees’ fate in county’s hands” from the July 31 VoicesAlthoughsection.Ishare her concern about saving native trees, I also recognize the multiple and varied interests at stake. The statement about the “overbuilt bikeway” is especially concerning. I frequently ride the multipurpose trail from UCSB to Hendry’s Beach (Arroyo Burro Beach) and back. Note that it is a multipurpose trail and not a bikeway. While riding, I share the trail with pedestrians, parents pushing children in strollers, people walking their dogs and frequently people with disabilities walking with assistance or being pushed in wheelchairs. The path is heavily used by a wide variety of people.Since the pandemic, the multipurpose trail is getting heavy increased usage. Some of the increased traffic consists of families including very young riders who are not stable enough to be safe riding on public streets. We are certainly seeing more e-bikes and e-assist bikes. In fact I have transitioned to an e-assist bike. With the increase in traffic, we have unfortunately also seen an increase in unsafe cyclists. There is currently an approximate 2-mile gap between the existing multipurpose trail between Modoc and Calle de Los Amigos.Suddenly the multipurpose trail becomes a deadly path where motorists are separated from other users by a 3-inch line of white paint. A motorist need only be distracted for seconds to easily cross the white line. It is deadly for pedestrians, cyclists or any other users of the shoulder. Coming from Calle de Los Amigos, cyclists must cross Modoc twice without signals and with no crosswalk at Calle de Los Amigos. Suddenly we no longer see parents with baby strollers. We don’t see families riding together. We see no way for disabled to enjoy anElectricouting. bikes or skateboards do not inherently have a lack of safety. Some riders certainly do misuse the trails and the streets and the sidewalks. Although I am not sure what can be done, serious cyclists, pedestrians and other users of a multipurpose trail are as concerned about them as Ms. Donovan. The solution, however, isn’t to have fewer multipurpose trails. I recognize there is an element of danger in cycling. I also recognize it as a great way to enjoy the outdoors and to exercise. Due to back issues, I am unable to walk very far without pain, but I can cycle for miles without discomfort. I long for the day when we can have a multipurpose trail that is complete from UCSB to downtown Santa Barbara.Yes,cyclists need to be safe and courteous on the trail, just as other users also need to be aware of cyclists. Walking side by side across the entire multipurpose trail is dangerous for both the pedestrians and the Surely, cyclists.wecan cooperate enough so that all can enjoy this beautiful place we call home.
The Jan. 6 election protest was much more peaceful than World Series games between the Yankees and Dodgers in the past! People don’t like bad calls, especially in presidential elections.Thisadministration’s damage will take decades to unravel, if that’s even possible. But as a nation we are responsible for our leadership. It is our own ignorance and greed. Hitler promised a Volkswagen in every driveway. Now, we are being forced to concede for an EV in every driveway. I pray that we can return to the values we have held historically, as we have worked toward equality. We are no longer the greatest nation in too many ways. Let’s get it back!

It is the difference between gross production value (which includes costs!) and profit. The values and costs were up, but the profit was down. Look no further than the effects of COVID-19 along with the inflationary price of labor, fuel, fertilizer, electricity, equipment, drought conditions and the like — not to mention the enormous cost of regulations! Most of these costs have risen even more in 2022. After all, farmers are consumers too, just like Meanwhile, you! the prices farmers receive has mostly remained flat. Uniquely, farmers can’t unilaterally raise prices based upon rising costs, as market conditions dictate the prices received for farm products. Robert Ingrum Santa Barbara Troubling times I love bananas! I love banana Bananasplits! republics, not so much. The term “banana republic” is the most frequently used phrase in every bit of our current national news. We are on the verge of emulating the German treatment of Jews during World War II. If you are a Republican, conservative or Christian, you are in danger, as the Jews were under Hitler. The raid — “a surprise tactic against an enemy” — that we witnessed against former president Donald Trump at Mar-A-Lago is a troubling example. The 87,000 additional IRS agents just adds to the equation, and they’re coming after the low-income/ small business opposition. While the Clinton family, the Biden family and the Pelosi entourage move ahead without investigation, many innocent people are suffering the consequences of defending their stores and their lives! Our government’s role has changed from “a country of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Half of our country is becoming the victims of our own government. Our phones, televisions and many other electronic devices are marking much of our behavior. The FBI, sadly, has become the gestapo. The DOJ is DOA. Our senators and representatives are overpaid with far too many perks and benefits. They and their families, in some instances, abuse travel and investments by their adult children.
I enjoy starting each day at 5 a.m. with a couple cups of coffee and watching the sun peak over the mountains. During these contemplative moments the other day, I once again thought how perfect everything is. The perfect speed of the Earth’s rotation. The exact distance from the sun. The ideal tilting of the axis. All perfect. From bacteria to human beings. All working in perfect harmony. From plants producing oxygen to oceans generating rain. Everything works perfectly, including the distance of the uncountable number of planets that are in various development stages, and none are close enough to interfere in the natural evolution of each other. How all this came to pass we may likely never know, but that’s OK, we get to enjoy the benefits all this perfection offers us. What isn’t perfect is language.Language, of course, is manmade. Its obvious purpose is communication. But like almost everything, language has been abused. Aside from just enjoying conversation and dealing with normal life, language is also used to manipulate, coerce, scare and get into people’s heads. And none of those misuses of language is more evident than those today. It’s been said, “If you control the language, you control the people,” or something like that. And it’s not just the spoken word. It’s what you see and read. We’ve learned from history how language has been used for evil Self-appointedpurposes.high priests told the uneducated masses if you don’t do this or that, the gods will strike you down. Or, if the gods don’t, the high priests will come up with some phony reason to justify killing you. The best dictators, or rather the worst, such as Hitler manipulated the people of Germany through language and later with terror, though initially he was seen as the second coming. Communist countries have always used language, combined with the written word, to brainwash their people to believe exactly what they want them to know and nothing more. Sound familiar?Whichbrings me to our shores. Word manipulation has been going on here since the colonial period. Even back then, newspapers were used to twist the truth or destroy a person because that’s pretty much all there was and people believed it. Not much has changed.Democrats hold the market on word manipulation, and they are, of course, supported by print and “news” misinformers.Neverhad it become more apparent and volatile when a certain Donald Trump was publicly crucified and vilified for one reason, to prevent him from holding public office. Based on nothing, words were tossed against the wall to see what stuck, and from there it would explode and spew from the lips of every democrat and practically every media outlet. I don’t want to go down the Trump Road again right now though the media, and the left are firing up their hate machines, having anxiety attacks at the prospect Trump may run again. Back in 2020 we watched with our own eyes how cities were burned to the ground, how people were killed by thugs. And we listened to Democrats and the media tell us, with a straight face, that they were demonstrations.peacefulAndthat the looting was OK and merely a This is languagehappenswhatwhenismisused

YOURHAVESAY
• Remember: Before Biden Attorney General Merrick Garland dispatched his jackboots to Mara-Lago, he launched a vindictive crusade against grassroots parents who revolted against anti-white critical race theory and “social emotional learning” claptrap in K-12 public schools across the country last fall. Mr. Garland’s infamous Oct. 4, 2021, memorandum framed peaceful school board protests as a national security threat. Mr. Garland vowed to use his “authority and resources to discourage these threats, identify them when they occur, and prosecute them when appropriate.”InMay,FBI whistleblowers revealed to House Republicans that the agency had created “threat tags” on FBI investigations into parents and local GOP officials “in almost every region of the country” who publicly opposed school vaccine and mask mandates. Well-versed in the FBI’s information suppression tactics, Judicial Watch filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit for all FBI records related to the Garland witch-hunt memo, which the attorney general himself testified he crafted after the Biden simps in charge of the National School Board Association released a letter labeling conservative parents as “domestic terrorists.” Mr. Garland testified that he based his memorandum off of a since-retracted letter from the National School Board Association that labeled parents as “domestic terrorists.” The National School Boards Association later issued an apology for the letter. No apology has been forthcoming from the Department of Justice, which refuses to cough up the FBI records sought by JudicialJudicialWatch.Watch attorney Ramona Cotca told me on Tuesday that “the FBI conducted a very narrow search, and it is no surprise that the search did not produce any responsive records. We notified DOJ that Judicial Watch challenges the search, and we are waiting to hear if it will undertake a reasonable search or whether we will move to briefing. Our next court filing is due Aug. 26.” • Cover-ups are embedded in the FBI’s DNA, of course. Delve into the FBI’s murderous history of the Waco massacre, its destruction of evidence in the Ruby Ridge case, its wanton abuses and “flagrant misconduct” (in the words of federal judge Gloria Navarro) in the Bundy Ranch standoff, and its ongoing attempts to suppress the truth about the Oklahoma City bombing and stymie Utah attorney Jesse Trentadue’s FOIA lawsuit against both the FBI and CIA dating back to •2006.Instigation is another trademark FBI goon-squad tactic. It was at the heart of the Patriot Conspiracy scheme at the center of Trentadue’s Oklahoma City bombing FOIA lawsuit. Fed infiltration and incitement also marked the Counter Intelligence Program of the 1960s and 1970s; multiple Islamic terror plots in the late 1990s and through the 2000s; the manufacturing of the politically timed “right-wing” plot by “rogue,” career-driven FBI agents to kidnap Democrat Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (which led to two acquittals and two mistrials) just one month before the 2020 presidential election; and yes, the FBI-Dem-Biden-weaponized Jan. 6 “insurrection.”Ifyouain’tquestioning the timing, you ain’t paying attention to the real enemies within. W hy should we care who Hunter Biden is?For matter, thatwhy should we care who Joe, James, Jill and Ashley Biden are? Because they are all part of worldwide wheelings, dealings and debauchery that are finally surfacing thanks to Fox News, Fox Nation and, of course, the New YorkGregPost.Gutfeld — his show, “Gutfeld!” is now No. 1 on late night TV — is smart, snotty, annoying, opinionated and, most of all, entertaining. Mr. Gutfeld, along with other Fox stars are clearly not going to let the left off the hook for the worst of wokeism. All one has to do is stream the first two parts of Fox Nation’s brilliant and revealing, “Who is Hunter Biden?” to get the truth (and be disgusted and dismayed by it as I) about how and what the Biden family has been up to for decades. The series is a tragedy, soap opera, who-doneit and porn show all in one, executed with precision editing and high drama, backed up by other Fox ofcorrespondents,host/starstheirownsuccessful shows (goody-two-shoes Dana Perino, professorial bespeckled Byron York, smartypants charmer Jesse Watters, among others) and — dare I say — with as much taste as the raunchy and deeply disturbing material and Fox’s lawyers allow. In the first of the four-part series, which aired last January, “The Five” co-host and nononsense Judge Jeanine Pirro chronicled the unhinged life of our president’s son — the cocaine, the prostitutes he used and needed and the very questionable Biden business practices. Fox contributor and New York Post columnist Miranda Devine’s “Laptop From Hell” (published last October) covered much of the first episode in her bombshell book. Viewers of “Who Is Hunter Biden?” are entertained, while getting unvarnished news and refreshing, informed opinions from its roster of time-tested journalists and talking heads. Following the release on July 20 of the series’ second episode, Ms. Devine told “Fox and Friends” there are “well-founded concerns” that President Biden may be compromised by China, referring to new revelations from Hunter Biden’s laptop involving contacts with Google executives and top U.S. officials involved with China policy.Spoiler for the second episode in the series: The viewer is left wondering, “How and why did Hunter Biden become such a disgusting, pitiful human, and how could the Biden family have become so tone deaf and oblivious to the dump of Biden family dirt?” We are exposed to more of the taped debauchery from drugs and sex and left with what role his father and stepmother, Jill, had in Hunter’s despicable downfall. Perhaps Sen. Chuck Grassley, the wise and doggedly determined 87-year-old, who goes for a 2-mile run and does push-ups in the morning before going to the Capitol, along with Sen. Ron Johnson and others, will get to the bottom of the epochal Biden scandal now that whistleblowers have come forward with more evidence that the FBI has been lying all along about the Bidens. If that doesn’t wake up the country to the crimes and perversions of the first family, hopefully episodes 3 and 4 of “Who Is Hunter Biden?” will. Be forewarned. You’ll want to take a shower after viewing episodes 1 and 2, as did I.

W hy are you Republican, libertarian, conservative?aOra Democrat, socialist? OK, if you read my column, you’re probably not a socialist ... But how do people come to such different conclusions? We like to think that our politics are formed by rational analysis. We analyze what conservatives and liberals write, weigh their ideas, and form conclusions based on facts and evidence. But it turns out something else is probably going on. I can predict your political party pretty accurately if I just know what you do for a living. Here’s why I say that: When you give money to a political candidate, the government requires that candidate’s campaign to ask you what your profession is. That information is turned over to the Federal Election Commission.VerdantLabs took that data and made an infographic that shows how people’s professions predict their Eighty-ninepolitics.percent of people who work in the fossil fuel industry donate to Republicans. Armies of MAGA supporters who had never previously been engaged in politics are only now beginning to fathom the depths of corruption in the bowels of the (In)Justice Department. But a weaponized goon squad of armed and unaccountable Feds Behaving Incorrigibly is nothing new. Let us count a few of the FBI’s nefarious ways: • Since the Jan. 6 Capitol rally, untold numbers of peaceful American citizens and their families have been harassed in their homes over their constitutionally protected exercise of free speech and assembly. As America’s Frontline Doctors founder Dr. Simone Gold told me in March 2021 after 20 armed FBI agents broke down her door:“Iwas paid a visit by the FBI in a Roger Stone-kind of take down moment, which is quite uncalled for. You know, if anybody wanted to get a hold of me, they could have picked up the phone and called. I’m very easy to find. But there were literally 20 guys with guns blazing, (and they) broke down my door.”The Stanford-trained lawyer and Chicago Medical Schooltrained doctor’s “crime”? Following a crowd that was waved into the Capitol by none other than the Capitol police to deliver a speech on medical freedom that was forced to relocate to National Statuary Hall when chaos broke out. We were then told with another straight face, by President Joe Biden, that all the ills of America are caused by white supremacists. The real danger America faces are all those white guys with guns, whom we never saw. Those are the ones we should really fear. President Biden swore he was going to go after them. But first he needed to define who they were and where they are. Just tossing nonsensical words out there is enough for people to cock their heads second guess themselves.Themisuse/abuse of the spoken word has accelerated over the last year so rapidly most people are so gaslighted they have no idea what the truth is anymore.Wewere told the high price of gas was caused by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Don’t look over here; it has nothing to do with shutting down oil production in America. Now gas has dropped a little, and we’re being told to shut up and be happy. It’s only $2 or $3 more a gallon than last year. Two years ago, the idea of $5 a gallon (Californians would love that price) would have seemed insane. Now we’re being preached, it’s not that bad. Suck it up. Can I get an amen? Media morons are using words to say really stupid things. One example is they’re trying to tell us inflation is a white privilege thing. Again, huh? That it’s something only the privileged are focused on. It’s not the economy, stupid, one of the TV smarty-pants “news”casters said. They fail to rummage in the foot locker of their ideology and point out inflation and high gas prices impact the poor the hardest. Again, an abuse of language in hopes enough people will believe that somehow inflation is racist. Democrats have all but destroyed our country in a very short period, and they could have placed us near the brink of war. We are already in one. We’re just letting the Ukrainians fight it for us, for now. Democrats are getting desperate. They’re trying to convince us that printing billions more of phony money in the name of reducing inflation and using the fake climate narrative and raising taxes, again, is a good thing. They’re super proud trying to convince us, with word manipulation, that this is what you people really want. More taxes and more debt. Believe us, it will be good for you. Our natural world is perfect, but our man-made world is a septic tank. Henry Schulte welcomes questions or comments hschulteopinions@gmail.com.at “And the lessons learned?” I asked.“Asan example, during my campaign for superintendent, the supposedly ‘non partisan’ League of Women Voters tried to discredit me, claiming I was unwilling to debate Susan Salcido because I refused to sign the agreement they gave me. They were operating a dirty game by showing me the rules after I signed up to participate, instead of showing me the rules on the front end. And then, changing the rules afterward.“Ihesitated to sign off on a change — they wanted me to agree not to speak about my opponent (Susan Salcido) at all — and they threatened to make me look bad to the public if I didn’t agree to their terms. There is nothing ‘bipartisan’ about the League of Women Voters. “This is where I think the distinction between troublemaker and problem solver is really important. If the perception is that you are a ‘troublemaker,” which is what the League and the media wanted to portray me as in this instance, you will get less support than if people perceive you as someone who actually wants to solve the problem. “Being a ‘problem solver’ seems to have also become a role for me in the Santa Barbara Unified School District. In 2015, I agreed to be a union representative. I had to stand up for the teachers against a principal who was breaking the teacher contract. I was successful, but my reward, at the end of the school year, was an involuntary transfer to a new school.”“Ouch.”“Ithappened at my next school, when again I was the union representative, and there was more trouble from the principal; it was my job to respond. We called a meeting with the district administration, and I had to exercise my rights as the union representative. Bonnie Donovan writes the “Did You Know?” column in conjunction with a bipartisan group of local citizens. It appears Sundays in the Voices section. established general standards that Congress thought required special expertise to create and administer regulations. To accomplish these tasks, Congress empowered the executive branch to create the Security and Exchange Commission and the Department of Labor to issue, administer and enforce regulations. Note that Congress creates the laws, and the scope of authority of agencies is limited to implementing that legislation.Inmylegal practice, sometimes it was difficult convincing corporate executives that a zealous agency employee’s orders were not valid when they exceeded their authority. Congress exercising their “oversight” powers of agencies sometimes is televised although, sadly, the heads of the agencies are not prosecuted for lying to Congress as Attorney General Eric Holder did about supplying guns to the drug cartels in transactions known as “Fast and Furious.”Recently the Supreme Court, in West Virginia v. the Environmental Protection Agency, reinforced the principle that the EPA’s authority is limited to the scope of the empowering legislation, the Clean Air Act, which did not include climate change. This case also demonstrates the difference in philosophy between the “conservatives,” meaning those who apply the Constitution as written, and “liberal” Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor and Stephen Breyer, who believe they should interpret the Constitution is a “living document,” meaning subject to their current beliefs. A major problem with the “living document” theory is how are citizens able to follow the law if the court keeps changing it? Congress, in order to limit the agencies, required in the Administrative Procedure Act that federal agencies must publish “proposed” regulations in the Federal Register for 90 days in order to permit the public to offer comments before the regulations become effective. For example, several courts have ruled the Biden administration’s agency’s regulations requiring vaccines were invalid for failing to follow the publishing requirements.Inoneofmy cases, many of the 73 charges OSHA filed were based on proposed regulations that had never been finalized. The seriousness of OSHA’s $8 million and potentially shutting multiple facilities that were producing the Delta and Titan rockets for the U.S. military, drove us into a trial with more trial days than O.J. before an administrative law judge dismissed all charges. These examples illustrate the risk of permitting unelected career bureaucrats to perform all three functions of government: legislate, enforce and judge. To avoid having to obtain bipartisan support in Congress, the Biden administration, in 2021, set a record for the number of pages of new agency regulations.Agenciesnever disappear. For example, the Department of Education continues even though the Tenth Amendment reserves education to the states. The Federal Government Manual lists 137 governmental agencies although there are “only” 15 at the presidential cabinet level. The agencies tend to be liberal, as indicated by the SEC listing 40% of its 4,301 employees as women, 54% as men and the other 6%? Today as the Biden team is pushing to have the IRS add 87,000 more employees, about the population of Santa Barbara, we should remember how Internal Revenue Service leader Lois Lerner tried to swing an election by refusing to certify conservative organizations as nonprofits.President Biden is using COVID-19 in the same way President Roosevelt used the Great Depression: to bypass Congress by using agencies to increase the “government within a government.” Brent E. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, followed by the disintegration of the Soviet bloc of satellite states and then the Soviet Union, represented a historic strategic victory for the West. The new coalition government in Germany led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz began with a low profile regarding Europe, in considerable contrast to the assertive long-term leadership of Chancellor Angela Merkel. This changed abruptly when Russia invaded Ukraine, and Germany now provides arms and other aid. Both of the potential NATO members bring significant qualities. The Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940, ended through negotiation, demonstrated Finland’s military prowess against a far larger enemy. Cold War Sweden practiced variations of often obviously anti-American “neutrality.” Both nations in NATO strengthen deterrence of Russia in the north. During the early phases of the Cold War, the Arctic was the focus of intense security concern. NORAD, the North American Air Defense Command, was formed in 1958 to coordinate Canada and U.S. military activities. (In 1981, it was retitled the North American Aerospace Defense Command.) The threat of Soviet long-range bombers attacking after crossing the Arctic was a prime concern. Less visibly, President Dwight Eisenhower secured demilitarization of Antarctica in 1959.Inthe North today, Russia has taken the lead in commerce, exploration and military bases. Moscow also pursues serious disputes with other Arctic nations. One example involves Canada and Denmark regarding control of the Lomonosov Ridge. In 2021, Russia succeeded Iceland in chairing the Arctic Council, which also includes Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the U.S. Finland and Sweden in NATO will effectively isolate Russia as the only non-member of the alliance. Agreement within an enlarged NATO will facilitate effective strategy to counter Russia’s potentially significant expansion in the Arctic region, a vital area largely ignored by U.S. presidents since the turn of the century. Russia has reconfirmed the validity of NATO.

But instead of applauding selfemployed workers for their help, California, DOL and bureaucrats across the country keep looking for ways to relegate independent contractors to the history books. California’s truckers are just the tip of the iceberg of the havoc such needless meddling can cause. West Beach’s limited parking is in the Coastal Zone. Surely the staff hearing officer will be cognizant of this. Why did city staff accept a submittal without the photos of the surrounding buildings, which is status quo for all applicants, for review boards to judge a project’s compatibility? Not only were site photos unavailable, but the architect’s response to questions was often, “I don’t know.” The architect’s renditions of the landscaping at 311 W. Montecito St. were a bounty of palm trees, yet none are proposed. The project goes to the SHO who will decide how it conforms with the Coastal Commission, and Urban Design Guideline. ABR questioned the land use of the project in that it is designed more as a residential space instead of a hotel. Board members lamented that land use is not in their purview; however, it is suspect.Onseveral occasions, Ed St. George claimed that Santa Brabara City College needs a student dorm, and he is going to build it.
