For the first time since the start of COVID-19 pandemic, the Santa Barbara Triathlon returned to a two-day event starting Saturday. “It was a great day and it went very smoothly. I dare to say it went off without a hitch. The athletes were excited to be here and we were excited to have them. The venue looked fantastic. It was a great vibe. This is a race that athletes really love. Santa Barbara is iconic - we live here for a reason,” Elizabeth Rodrigues, race director and co-owner of the Santa Barbara Triathlon, told the News-Press. Saturday saw about 550 participants included relay teams of two to three people. Mrs. Rodrigues co-owns the race with her husband, Gerry. They purchased the race from Joe Coito at the end of 2020 when Mr. Coito moved his family to Texas. Mrs. Rodrigues emphasized that they wanted to assure the community that even though Mr. Coito is gone, the race will remain. “We are here and we plan on being here for years to come,” Mrs. Rodrigues told the News-Press. “We were here last year. We were one of the first events allowed to go live. We were the first live event due to the timing post pandemic. It was a one-day event. We had to cap the field at 1,000 people. We were back

On Saturday, activists held a protest march to save the Modoc Preserve and the trees along Modoc Road from destruction at the hands of a potential county project to build the Modoc MultiUse Path through the Modooc Preserve and along Modoc Road. The efforts of the Community Association for the Modoc Preserve (CAMP) have found widespread support, and their petition to “Save the Trees” has over 3,000 signatures to date. “I think we had a very good turnout. We had about 40 people with very artistic hand painted signs who walked around and stood by the roadside holding signs and waving to motorists. Motorists honked and flashed thumbs up. It was heartening to see how people got engaged and came out on their Saturday for what they feel is the greater good,” Eva Inbar, CAMP volunteer told the News-Press. The News-Press asked Ms. Inbar how the rally brought attention to the issue: “It got the word out. So far the county hasn’t done much public outreach. Over social media and the press it has gotten out more. It draws attention to the fact that we are very serious about this,” she said.

Lompoc Valley Medical Center has placed an initial order of 1,100 doses of the new bivalent COVID-19 vaccine. It is manufactured by both Pfizer and Moderna, and both have been ordered.Thisvaccine is reported to more specifically protect against the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, the latter of which currently represents approximately 90% of COVID-19 cases in the United States. LVMC expects to receive the vaccine in early-to-mid September. Before it can be administered, the vaccine must be approved by the FDA, CDC, and Western States Alliance, and guidance must be issued regarding age and “booster interval” eligibility. Over the past several weeks, the demand for initial vaccinations and boosters has gradually slowed at LVMC vaccination clinics. Once the bivalent vaccine becomes available, LVMC expects the demand for boosters to significantly increase. email: kzehnder@newspress.com

Knowing that the globalistminded power elite has determined that a conservative Democrat is needed to take on Republican contenders for the presidency in 2024 (presumably Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis or maybe Donald Trump now that the Department of Justice has inadvertently elevated the latter’s status), our gut tells us that Kyrsten Sinema, the 46-year-old U.S. senator from Arizona, is the Dem to AsWhy?watch.wenoted in this column two months ago after secretive Bilderberg convened its annual powwow in Washington, D.C., Sen. Sinema was the only elected political leader from the U.S. invited to hobnob with all the usual suspects (techie billionaires, Wall Street titans, bankers and those of lesser wealth entrusted with their globalist bidding). These folks (not Bilderberg as an entity but the globalist-minded persons who run it) have the wherewithal to fund a big-budget presidential campaign and ensure extensive no-cost positive media coverage — and since they’ve been doing this successfully in the United States and Western Europe for going on 70 years, they are well practiced at their craft. We expect Kyrsten, with their patronage, to put President Joe Biden to bed, sweep Vice President Kamala Harris under a rug, then ace the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary. Yes, in the great tradition of former President Jimmy Carter, we forecast that Sen. Sinema will “arise from nowhere” to become a national figurehead and new darling of the Democratic Party, whose leaders will, with some difficulty, attempt to harness its wacky wokesters into uniting behind Sen. Kyrsten as the only way of circumventing a Republican onslaught, despite Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO of GLADD (an LGBTQ advocacy group) saying earlier this year, “Sen. Sinema turned her back on LGBTQ voters and all marginalized people who helped put her in office, hoping she’d represent and protect their voices.”Butthe deal will be sweetened to satiate the “progressive” element of the party by putting a progressive candidate on the ticket as Sen. Sinema’s running mate. Yup, the gnomes of

Chicken Little is right: The sky is falling

Bilderberg have got that covered too: Stacey Abrams, a former state representative in Georgia, attended Bilderberg in 2019, which is what makes her cocky enough to run for governor (again) along with harboring presidential aspirations.(Areyoubeginning to get the picture?)Bilderberg, you see, is the newfangled version of the early 20thcentury smoke-filled back room where things like this get decided. Not in plenary session, mind you, but in corridor networking — in other words, behind the scenes of a behind-the-scenes gathering.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema intervened in the Inflation Reduction Act and insisted that, to secure her unpredictable vote, U.S. Senate Democrats had to strip a provision that would have closed a loophole benefitting super-rich Wall Street hedge fund managers and private equity investors, preserving, The Daily Beast reported, “a favorable tax structure for deep-pocketed specialMeaninginterests.”(according to CNBC): “The tax break allows hedge fund managers and law firm partners to pay significantly less tax than ordinarySomewhatworkers.”bewildered by Kyrsten’s proactive stance on favoring fat cats, The New York Times reported, “Sinema has been silent on why she considers preserving the carried interest loophole so important.” That is because, according to Intelligencer in New York Magazine, “Sinema had tried to keep her support for the notorious provision quiet.” But wait, breaking news (as we wroteUnderthis)!media scrutiny, Krysten finally broke her silence: “The tax provisions that were proposed by some of my colleagues in that bill would have negatively impacted small and mid-sized businesses in Arizona, and I was unwilling to accept tax hikes on small and midsizedWhichbusinesses.”makesno sense at all because, as The Center for Media and Democracy pointed out, “Arizona isn’t home to many private equity firms, yet she has become the Senate’s leading defender of the industry.” Which means, not unlike Liz Cheney, Sen. Sinema is NOT representing her constituents, but instead looking after special interests headquartered in big East Coast cities 2,500 miles away. In its befuddlement, The New York Times continued to wonder about this. “There appears to be little public record of Sinema discussing why she supports special tax treatment for carried interest. According to a search of the Congressional Record, Sinema has apparently never uttered the phrase ‘carried interest’ in a public legislative session.” So, we ask, who put the phrase “carried interest loophole” into Kyrsten’s head and pushed her to intervene? Who exactly highlighted for her the very small print in that very big bill and requested that she nix it? We reached out to the senator’s press spokesperson, Hannah Hurley, with these very questions. Ms. Hurley’s silence was deafening.Hmm.The only real answer can be Sen. Kyrsten’s new power elite pals who, despite their billions, need every loophole they can crawl into for growing ever richer. Thankfully, Arizona Public Radio scrutinized election records and pulled this rabbit out of a hat: “Sinema has received nearly $1 million in campaign contributions over the past year from private equity professionals, hedge fund managers and venture capitalists …”“…whose interests,” adds an Associated Press newswire, “she has staunchly defended in Congress.”Youscratch our backs, Kyrsten, we’ll scratch yours. One of Sen. Sinema’s donors — surprise, surprise — is billionaire Henry R. Kravis, a regular Bilderberg attendee whose wife, Marie-Josee Kravis, is co-chair of Bilderberg Meetings and president of American Friends of Bilderberg Inc. (a nonprofit whose donors include the Kravis Foundation, billionaire venture capitalist Peter Thiel, Microsoft and Goldman Sachs). Other contributors to Sen. Sinema’s campaign include some of the most senior executives of powerful Blackstone (the second largest private equity firm in the U.S.), The Carlyle Group (the sixth-largest private equity firm in the world) and Apollo Global Management ($512 billion in assets under their control). Again, are you beginning to get theSopicture?makeno mistake about it, Kyrsten Sinema is the new political puppet of the power elite. It may be a stretch for the folks who run Bilderberg, and likely will not happen, but the only chance, in our opinion, that Dems have of holding onto the White House in 2024 is this scenario: Following the example Richard Nixon’s VP, Spiro Agnew, in 1973, Kamala resigns (as she should, anyway, for inarticulation and

INTERMISSION: LOSER LIZ These powerbrokers do NOT back Rep. Liz (“Abe Lincoln”) Cheney, who might as well have switched over to the Democratic Party. No, strike that. Liz is a carpetbagger, a creature of Washington, D.C., not rural Wyoming, and should have run as a congresswoman from Virginia’s 10th congressional district where she truly resides (in McLean, across the Potomac from D.C.) instead of pretending a presence and constituency in the Cowboy State, from which big daddy Dick hails.Wyomingites told Liz what they think of that — and her — by not just voting her out of office after three terms but annihilating her by a majority, way more than twoto-one, in the Republican primary (66% for Harriet Hageman, 29% forTalkLiz).about humiliation. And well deserved because this is a perfect example of what happens when you don’t represent (and think you know better than) your constituents.Asisusually the case with selfimportant politicians like Liz, having gotten trumped by Ms. Hageman, she now reportedly thinks of herself as a presidential candidate.Ifso, she is best advised to run as an independent with no chance of winning but acting out, instead, as a spoiler against conservative Republicans, which, as the spoiled daughter of the least popular vice president in U.S. history, would most certainly, in our opinion, reflect her true nature. And since it is obvious to everyone that spoiling for a fight is her gambit, Liz is best ignored as she settles back into her real existence far from the state that kicked her butt. In other words, note to Dick Cheney’s daughter: Please leave quietly and return to your swampy natural habitat. (By the way, lest anyone think our vitriol toward Liz connects to Donald Trump and Ms. Cheney’s “Jan. 6” antics, it does not. We simply do not respect elected representatives who thumb their noses at folks who trusted them with their votes.)

The Santa Claus Lane Bikeway project will begin construction after Labor Day and run through summer 2023. The project will create a new Class I bikeway and multipurpose path to connect Santa Claus Lane to Carpinteria Avenue. This will close a gap in the California Coastal Trail between Sand Point Road and Carpinteria Avenue. The new bikeway will be constructed between Highway 101 and the railroad tracks. As part of the bikeway project, the intersection at Carpinteria Avenue and Estero Street will be updated with new crosswalks, signage, landscaping, curbs and gutters and bike lanes. At the western end of the project, a new vehicular turnaround will be built at the end of Santa Claus Lane. Bikeway construction will necessitate closing alternate business driveways off Carpinteria Avenue for short periods of time. The western first and third driveways will be closed from September to November. The middle driveway will be closed after the surrounding driveways from November to December. Driveways on either side of each driveway closure will remain open.Atthe end of Santa Claus Lane, a teardrop-shaped turnaround will be constructed to allow cars to head west on Santa Claus Lane. Large trucks will be required to enter southbound Highway 101 using the on-ramp. During construction, access to Sand Point Road will be available only adjacent to the start of the teardrop turnaround construction area. From November to December 2022, access to Sand Point Road will be one lane only. Drivers will need to check for oncoming cars prior to exiting or entering Sand Point Road. Please note that during this time and for the majority of bikeway construction, the Highway 101 southbound on-ramp at Santa Claus will be closed. The bikeway is being built in coordination with the Highway 101: Padaro project. The Santa Barbara County Fire Department, in conjunction with UCSB’s Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER), has tentatively scheduled a oneday Prescribed Burn at UCSB Lagoon near Campus Point with a targeted burn window of the week of Sept. 12. This oneday burn is part of an ongoing management effort to control non-native grasses and establish native bluff scrub vegetation. Building on successful past burns, this treatment will be conducted on a day within the burn window with the least amount of fog to generate enough heat to reduce the viability of the non-native seed bank, and on a day with the best conditions for Approximatelydispersion.0.5acres will be burned. As conditions permit, the burn is scheduled to begin in the late morning or early afternoon and conclude by 4 p.m. on a permissive burn day. The actual burn is likely to last less than an hour. Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) staff have reviewed the Smoke Management Plan and provided conditions to minimize smoke impacts in Santa Barbara County. The burn will be conducted when the meteorological conditions are highly favorable to direct smoke away from population centers. This prescribed burn is planned and coordinated by the Santa Barbara County APCD, San Luis Obispo County APCD, San Joaquin Valley APCD, Ventura County APCD and the California Air Resources Board in order to minimize impacts on air quality on surrounding communities. The burn is dependent on weather and air quality conditions that are favorable to smoke dispersion. If the conditions are not as desired, the burn will be rescheduled. Due to changing winds and weather conditions, it is difficult to predict which areas of the county, if any, may be most affected by smoke from the burn. If you smell smoke, take precautions and use common sense to reduce any harmful health effects by limiting outdoor activities. When you can smell smoke or when it is visible in your area, avoid strenuous outdoor activity and remain indoors as much as possible. These precautions are especially important to children, older adults and those with heart and lung conditions. If you are sensitive to smoke, consider temporarily relocating and closing all doors and windows on the day of the burn. Symptoms of smoke exposure can include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chest tightness or pain, nausea and unusual fatigue or lightheadedness. People are advised to use caution while driving near prescribed fire operations.

It’s really something special to see it come together and watch that first group of swimmers go into the water,” said Mrs. Rodrigues.“Weareclosing out the first twelve months of being back outside doing what we love in a post pandemic environment. There is such an energy to being back outside doing what we love. Looking around at the venue as I’m cleaning up and getting ready for day two, I’m really grateful. After eight months of preparation it was finally a go. This is an event we cannot do without the community’s support including the city, California Highway Patrol and the police. This event is a family affair,” said Mrs. Rodrigues. This year’s sponsors include Montecito Bank and Trust, Hoka, Tower 26 and Base Nutrition. Sunday’s continuation of the event is really a day about family and community.“Ourevents are geared towards making sure there is something good for everyone,” said Mrs. Rodrigues.

The land trust owns other beautiful properties near Santa Barbara. We want to be sure that the land trust actually protects them and that the statement ‘protected in perpetuity’ actually means something. We are very much looking to the land trust here,” said Ms. Inbar.

The Land Trust has “concerns about cutting down trees, but also about soil degradation, water degradation and change of water courses, and we believe the project would result in all of that. It is incompatible with the conservation easement. They are also concerned about e-bikes, which are specifically prohibited in the nature protected area,” said Ms. Inbar. The News-Press asked Ms. Inbar what the next step is for CAMP: “To be a partner in the upcoming process. The county has reset the process and are drafting a new MND and comment period … the whole process was restarted, because it was very faulty and they saw that themselves I think. “One more goal for our protest was to make it clear to the county that they need to be more creative in exploring alternative solutions: If you go into the Preserve, choose a different kind of trail, or choose a different route altogether. These have all been suggested, but so far they have doubled down on their original plan, albeit with slight modifications,” Ms. Inbar told the News-Press in an email. “I think we are really looking to the land trust. Pay attention to what the land trust is doing. They play a very important role around Santa Barbara. The concern is, will they vigorously defend their conservation easement here and elsewhere? They have taken a very important step and we appreciate that, with the county particularly. The land trust also needs to remind the water company that they have an obligation under the conservation easement to uphold it.

Organization calls on Santa Barbara Land Trust to oppose path to normal this year with our two day format. It was nice to finalize that normal life that we had and missed and do what we love to do and be able to do it over two days,” said Mrs. Rodrigues. 2021 was the first year that Mr. & Mrs. Rodrigues put on the race asComingowners.in first in Saturday’s long course was Santa Barbara’s own Jason Smith, while second place went to Adam Goulet from Bend, Oregon. Other Santa Barbara residents who took part are Sarah Terry, who came in 12th, and Dan Cicileo, who came in 13th.“It was spectacular for us as race organizers as well as for the athletes who were able to win the race and be on the podium,” said Mrs. Rodrigues. Participating clubs included the Tri Club of San Diego, LA Tri CLub, Tower 26 and the Triathlon Club of Monterey. Additionally, the Santa Barbara Triathlon Club had over 60 members participate.“Itwasgreat.

“We hope that the county sees this and that there is a determined group that wants to be taken seriously and wants the county to talk to us. They have made progress but they need to do more. Westmont volleyball splits a pair on opening day

By JACOB NORLING WESTMONT SPORTS WRITER Westmont Volleyball (1-1) traveled down to Fullerton for their doubleheaderseason-openingandleftwith a win and a loss on Friday. After pulling away from La Sierra (1-1) in four sets, the Warriors fell to Dordt (Iowa) (2-0) in four sets to finish the day with a split. “We got better as the day went on,” said Westmont head coach Ruth McGolpin. “Especially in our second match, we just continued to get better. Our passing was really solid and our creativity with our setters got better as the day went on. “We played with a little more heart as the day went on and that was a positive sign.” In their first match of the season, the La Sierra Eagles proved to be a handful. The Warriors came out swinging in set one, jumping out to a 2011 lead before La Sierra began the chip away. At one point, the Warriors were on the brink of victory with a 24-14 lead, but the Eagles refused to go away, scoring eight unanswered points. Finally, Phoebe Minch’s sethigh fifth kill solidified a 25-22 victory in set one. In the second set, the largest lead for either side was a mere four points. Down 21-17, another kill from Minch sparked a rally for the Warriors that eventually led them flipping the script at 24-23. On the next serve the Eagles knotted things at 24, but consecutive kills from Jessie Terlizzi and Minch allowed Westmont to outlast La Sierra by a score of 26-24. In the third set, La Sierra took out two sets worth of frustration on the Warriors, as the Eagles opened up the game on a 137 run going into a Westmont timeout. The timeout did little to stop La Sierra’s momentum as they ultimately routed Westmont by a score of 25-15. In set four, pressure started to build for the Warriors immediately when the Eagles opened up the set on a 7-3 run. La Sierra kept Westmont at arm’s reach for the first half of the set, but a Kaili Hashimoto service ace allowed the Warriors to tie the game at 13. From there, the clubs traded points for the next handful of serves. Down 19-18, one of Lexi Malone’s 14 kills started a 5-0 run for the Warriors that saw the club take a 23-20 lead. However, La Sierra once again punched back, scoring four unanswered points to go up 24-23 as they flirted with a fifth set. In their first match of 2022, however, the Warriors were able to out-will their opponent. Eventually, Terlizzi’s sixth kill capped off a match-clinching three-point run for a 27-25 win. Minch and Malone both collected a match-high 14 kills, while Hashimoto led the way with 13 digs. Keelyn Kistner collected 13 assists, while Alexa Shiner, in her collegiate debut, added in 12 of her own. In the latter half of the doubleheader, the Dordt Defenders set the tone early and took control. In set one, Dordt jumped out to a 13-4 lead and never looked back, ultimately defeating the Warriors 25-15 to open the match. In the second set, Westmont looked primed to even things up after an ace from Shiner put them up 10-3 early. The Warriors were able to hold off the Defenders for most of the set, leading by as many as five as late as 21-16. However, the Warriors committed five attacking errors in six possessions down the stretch, and surrendered the second set by a score of 25-23. In the third set, Westmont and Dordt were once again neck-andneck. This time, following a 2222 tie, it was the Warriors with a set-closing run. Kills by Minch and Sara Krueger ultimately gave the Warriors their only win of their second match by a score of The25-23.day came to an end in the fourth set, when following a 14-14 tie, the Defenders pulled away for good. After breaking the tie with a kill to go ahead 15-14, Dordt never again allowed Westmont to pull even, eventually clinching the match with a 25-21 win. Minch led the Warriors with 15 kills in the second match while Terlizzi contributed with 10 of her own. Defensively, Minch and Hashimoto each had 12 digs, while Kistner added 11, and Ilyssa Ocampo had 10. “Kaili Hashimoto and Ilyssa Ocampo were absolutely stunning,” said McGolpin. “They were our backbone today. They passed well, dug great balls, and were really the two who stood outTheindividually.”Warriorsare back at it tomorrow with another doubleheader. First, Westmont will match up with Saint Katherine at 1:00 p.m., before clashing with Corban (Ore.) at 6 p.m.“First things first we have to regroup and get ready for Saint Katherine,” offered McGolpin. “We know Corban is going to be really good as well. We’re going to have to come out and do what we know we can do on our half of the“Wecourt.need to be able to make adjustments and be a team that’s able to be flexible. Luckily, we have another couple chances tomorrow.”

The UCSB women’s volleyball team fell in its season-opener to Northern Colorado 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23) Friday night as a part of the Northern Colorado/Colorado State Tournament.TheGauchos led the match in both points with 71 and kills with 50 compared to 63 and 49 for the host bears. UCSB also led with 48 assists and 15 total blocks.Tasia Farmer led the way on the offensive end tallying 12 kills swinging a .296 clip. Macall Peed led all players with 17 digs and was perfect on the receiving end converting on all 21 serves sent her way. Grace McIntosh and Megan Shimoda split the setter duties recording 20 assists and 19 assists, respectively. Deni Wilson added nine kills to go along with nine blocks and Michelle Ohwobete had seven kills and 12 digs. The Bears led the first set from 2-1 on as they outhit the Gauchos .440 to .138. Wilson got started early recording five kills on a potent 5-1-6 (.667) line. Shimoda found 15 of her 19 assists in the set. The second set was a much closer affair as the frame saw 13 ties and nine lead changes, the most in the match. The two teams remained within three points of each other deep into the late points. Tied at 20 apiece, the Bears edged out the Gauchos thanks to a trio of kills by Rachel Hickman, including the clinching point to close it out at 25-23.UCSB sent down seven blocks in the set to hold UNC to just a .029 hitting percentage The first set win of the season came in the third and it did not come easy as the Gauchos grinded to take it in extra points. After trailing by as much as six at 14-8, UCSB stormed back and used a series of big runs to knot things up at 22-22. A huge kill from Ohwobete tied things up and a block by Farmer and Wilson gave UCSB set point. After seeing the match tied again at 24-24, Farmer picked up a solo block and a kill to keep the matchFarmeralive.finished the set with six kills swinging a .455 clip. The final set was led primarily by the Gauchos who parlayed the third-set momentum into the fourth and got as much a five-point lead. Up 21-17, UCSB saw three straight attacking errors that let the Bears back in as the host team tied it at 21-21. The Gauchos got a kill from Tallulah Froley that made it a 23-22 game in their favor but Northern Colorado rattled off a 3-0 run to end it.

Santa Barbara would snag its third goal of the opening half in the 34th minute, with English once again contributing. The Modesto, Calif. native found herself with a lot of space down the left wing, taking it to the byline before placing a perfect cross off the head of midfielder Hannah McLain and in, making it 3-0. Freshman forward Aisha Camara showed her potential while playing much of the second half. She had a shot saved early on and nearly scored on a strong take with the right foot that caromed straight down off the crossbar. In the dying minutes of the match, she would get her goal, being set up by Springer on a 1-on-1 that she easily slotted past the keeper. The four goals were the most the Vaqueros have scored in a seasonopener since 2013, when they defeated LA Harbor 7-0. While the second half didn’t produce many fireworks, they were able to get some valuable first-time experience for a handful of players as the second unit took up much of the second half. The SBCC football team showed its support with some loud, energetic cheers throughout most of the second half. The noise reached several crescendos, including on some nifty moves by midfielder Maisie Moore and Camara as they moved past multiple defenders in style. The Vaqueros hit the road for the Ventura Tournament on Wednesday to face Orange Coast at 6:30 p.m. Michael Jorgenson works in communications/media relations at Santa Barbara City College. email: sports@newspress.com

Opening its 2022 season against LA Harbor on Friday night at La Playa Stadium, the SBCC men’s soccer team used two first half goals to claim a 2-0 win. The Vaqueros got out to a bit of a slow start as LA Harbor pressured their defense early. In the 4th minute, an incisive pass from the left wing had a Seahawk forward seemingly in a 1-on-1 with goalkeeper Will Haberfield, but defender Connor Coyle made a crucial play by sticking his foot in at the last minute to save a goal. From there, the home side seemed to settle in, and the scoreline would reflect it. Reigning WSC-North Offensive Player of the Year Bart Muns would notch his first goal of the year in the 24th minute on an assist by Joep Wouters Van den Oudenweijer. Forward Liam Wilder later doubled the Vaquero lead in the 38th minute. SBCC’s defense wasn’t under a lot of pressure the rest of the way and Muns would secure a brace in the second half, scoring in the 78th minute after a poor LA Harbor handball in the box awarded the Vaqueros a penalty. The Vaqueros will have some time off before their road opener at Taft at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The SBCC women’s soccer team began its 2022 campaign Friday afternoon and couldn’t have gotten out to a better start, besting LA Harbor by a final score of 4-0. A large number of Vaqueros saw the pitch, while four different goalscorers found the back of the net and SBCC got out to its second consecutive 1-0 start. The Vaqueros dominated possession from the outset and when they got their chances, they made them count. In the 9th minute, sophomore forward Theresa English – the team’s leading goalscorer in 2021 –picked up right where she left off at the end of last season. A ball headed forward from the midfield by freshman Gizela Hermeno took a poor deflection off an LA Harbor player, and the race was on as it approached the box. Despite the last defender having about a 10-yard head start, English powered ahead to claim possession as the center back took a spill. English then decisively cut inside before beating the keeper near post for the first goal of the year. Roughly 10 minutes later, the Vaqueros caught the Seahawks on the counter with some quick movement out from their defensive third. Sophomore Hanna Crawford played it forward from the right back position with her favored left foot, and forward Aly Springer took it in stride off the chest as she broke away from the Seahawks back line in midfield. Springer then fired a low, hard-hit ball inside the far left post from the edge of the box to double the Vaqueros’ lead.

The Cate girls varsity volleyball team defeated Laguna Blanca in four sets Friday, bringing home a victory in the team’s second match of the season. The set scores were 25-16, 15-25, 25-19 andSeveral25-15. strong serving runs, including an early one from junior Mel Davidson in the first set, got Cate off to a strong start. Laguna Blanca answered with several strong runs of their own to secure a second-set win, but Cate’s Gigi Geyer stepped up big in the final two sets to restore momentum to her team. Geyer supplied nearly a dozen kills and several aces in a dominant run to secure set three and four victories. “It was great to see the girls go out and compete today. Laguna is always well coached and we knew we’d have to bring our A game if we wanted to have a chance at being successful. I’m pleased with our overall team and happy to see our freshman rise to the occasion in a loud and foreign atmosphere. We all understand that there are several things we need to improve on but glad to see we are taking steps in the right direction. Also kudos to Mel Davidson on how much energy and passion she is bringing, it’s been really fun to watch her out there so far this season,” said Cate Coach Jordon Dyer.Standout performances for Laguna Blanca included a six kill, four dig performance from Natalie Bianchi and a contribution from Sarah Woodhouse that included five kills, six digs and two aces.

The Dos Pueblos High School water polo team played two matches on Friday, losing to Clovis North but securing a victory against Garces Catholic and leaving the team’s record at 2-1. The team first fell to Clovis North by a score of 6-9. The game stayed close until the fourth quarter, with Reggie Robles contributing 14 saves and two steals while manning the goal, Brody Luke adding four goals and Jaden Moore adding two goals. Foul trouble was the team’s ultimate undoing, with Dos Puebles losing three players in the fourth quarter leading to a fourgoal outburst by Clovis North to take the game. An impressive defensive effort allowed Dos Pueblos to bounce back from it’s morning loss to capture a 9-4 win over Garces Catholic. Robles recorded four saves in the game, also leading the Chargers with five steals. Moore also played a key defensive role, contributing four steals and drawing two penalties. Luke was again front and center on offense, scoring six of the team’s goals, while Aden Bishop, Ben Fuhrer and Cody Pearce each contributed one. - Matt Smolensky SPORTS ROUNDUP general incompetence), and Joe Biden chooses Kyrsten to be his VP. THE PUTIN REPORT Has Russia’s brutal dictator struck yet again? A man committing a so-called suicide fell to his death from his swank Georgetown condo in Washington, D.C., early this month after having relentlessly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin and his stalled war in Ukraine, which has now killed 65,000 Russian servicemen, lost $16.56 billion in 12,142 pieces of military hardware (including the $750 million Moskva warship) and has reportedly led to “despondency” in the DanKremlin.Rapoport, a 52-yearold Latvian-born American businessman, supposedly pinned a suicide note to his dog, Boy, before setting the mixed-breed pup free in a D.C. park. But, oddly, there were no bloodstains on him. Mr. Protosenya had been deputy chairman of Novotek, a Russian natural gas firm. Said his son Fodor, “He loved my mother and especially Maria, my sister. The board estimates that the regulations will result in the total statewide cost of ownership net cost savings of $92.9 billion between 2026 and 2040 for businesses, fleets and individuals who purchase these vehicles. “Much of the [total cost of ownership] savings stem from reduced gasoline consumption, with gas prices conservatively assumed to remain relatively constant around $4 per gallon, with even greater savings if prices remain at their current elevated levels or increase further,” CARB’s summary states. The adopted regulations implement Gov. Gavin Newsom’s previous executive order that required new car sales to be zero-emission by 2035. Gov. Newsom called the CARB’s new regulations “groundbreaking” and “worldleading” in a statement Thursday. The board’s regulations garnered praise from vehicle manufacturers, including Ford. In a statement, Ford’s Chief Sustainability Officer Bob Holycross called the regulations a “landmark standard that will define clean transportation and set an example for the United States.” “At Ford, combating climate change is a strategic priority, and we’re proud of our partnership with California for stronger vehicle emissions standards, forged during a time when climate action was under attack,” Mr. Holycross said. The Advanced Energy Economy, a national business group, also praised the board’s decision on Thursday, saying the decision “charts the path toward a zero-emissions transportation future for the whole country.”

“We are still learning how to play as one unit,” said Laguna Blanca Coach Jason Donnelly. “Tonight we struggled a little bit against a solid Cate squad. We will learn from it and get back to work at practice on Monday.”

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great test of knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start you off. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1 - 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

2. Always be reading a book. It doesn’t matter if it takes you a year, because having a book that you are leisurely meandering through is a great way to improve your mind and help you ease any tension you might be feeling. Audio books work great too.

3. Make sure your playlist is up to date. It’s wise to have music for any occasion on your phone, because you never know when you might need a little Mozart or, perhaps, Dr. Dre. Music can lift your spirits and soothe your mood, so having it handy is a great self-preservation tool. Don’t leave home without it.

5. Organize something. A junk drawer, your desk, your bathroom counter, the garage … but wait there’s more. We all have something that needs to be straightened out, and when you complete that simple task, you get some really good energy, which will lead to better thoughts and actions. 6. Clean out your digital devices. You no doubt have too many old emails, texts, and calls taking up space, both on your device and in your mind, every time you see them. Such momentary distractions add up into wasted time. 7. Do the dishes. It will take about ten minutes, and during that time, just enjoy the warm soapy water. Afterward, you can give yourself a manicure. 8. If you have a pet, give it some love. When our cat had a cancer scare, we totally doted on her, and even though she’s been very loving her whole life, during that time she got used to the extra attention and is now demanding it. She asks you to pet her whenever you walk by; it’s pretty cute and we are soaking up the love more too. Our pets are not with us forever. I really hate wasting time. It happens to us all, but some of these methods will make the passing of this time more pleasurable and perhaps enlighten you a little. At least you won’t be bored and you’ll feel better about yourself. Barton Goldsmith, Ph.D., is an award-winning psychotherapist and humanitarian. His written work also covered what stocks, bonds and mutual funds he would invest $100,000 in to perform well over the next 30 years and why. “I would like to thank InvestWrite for acknowledging my work and selecting me from a pool of competitive writers as a national winner,’’ said Juan, who was notified at the end of the summer. “I hope the teachings offered by InvestWrite will again become assets to future investors and impact many more.’’ Juan, who will be attending UCLA next month, has received a $100 gift card, journal/pen, medal, and a certificate is on the way. It is a common expression that something is lost in translation, but few people discuss what can be gained in the process, particularly in relation to poetry. In an age of dwindling linguistic diversity and cultural homogenization, poetry translators build bridges across borders and between cultures, writers and readers, introducing new syntactic strategies, rhythms and image repertoires. Reading as translators is sometimes considered the deepest reading, described as a multi-layered engagement with sensorial experience — verbal and visual choices interwoven with the vibrancy of sound — at its“Parallelcore. Local mystery/thriller author Max Talley will be at Chaucer’s Books, 3321 State St., to talk about and sign his latest book, “My Secret Place,” at 6 p.m. Sept.14. “My Secret Place” contains 17 short stories, of legendary jazz musicians meeting for a recording session in 1966, of a painter dealing with the crash of the speculative art market in downtown Manhattan, of a woman’s surreal walk home in Southern California after another day as a house cleaner, about a mid-’70s bar band achieving its one-hit-wonder status and a middle-aged wife dreaming of her imperious Long Island youth. Musicians and artists, underdogs and eccentrics, secret heroes of their own lives — they are driven by eccentric quests that bewilder friends and family. Apartment managers, stoned teenagers and pop culture collectors — all trying to live in and make sense of a modern world that may have already left them behind.

I received a great deal of response to last week’s column outlining Donald Trump’s successes (and excesses), so I thought I’d stay on the theme and respond to some of the criticisms and suggestions by News-Press and Substack (jimb.substack.com) readers. There were those who, though they voted for Mr. Trump and admire his accomplishments, feel that he “has become a malevolent force in the Republican Party.” Many have bought into the media narrative that if Mr. Trump’s endorsed candidates are defeated, he’d be responsible for snatching “defeat from the jaws of victory.” What they are suggesting, instead, is that Republicans should be nominating candidates “who can win,” regardless of any steadfast fealty to Republican ideals. I Nearlydisagree.allof Trump’s endorsements were chosen for sound reasons, at least as near as I can tell. Is there a stinker or two among the hundreds? Probably, but let’s ask a further question: what good does it do for the Republican Party to have a Lisa Murkowski, a Mitt Romney, an Adam Kinzinger, or a Liz Cheney in office? Oh sure, they’ll mostly vote with the Republican Party… when it suits them. But, if the going gets tough, are they dependable?Theanswer surely is “No, they aren’t.” Any Republican who says he or she gets along better and would rather work with her Democrat colleagues, as Ms. Cheney has done recently, is a Republican only because she’d lose if she ran as a Democrat. No Democrat is going to win a Congressional or Senate seat in Wyoming. So, candidates such as Liz Cheney give lip service to Republican voters, but their true loyalty is to themselves. Sixty-six-plus percent of Republican voters in Wyoming chose her opponent, Harriet Hageman, even though Cheney is a long-established and respected name in that state. Her decision to join the one-sided Democratdominated January 6th Commission cost her that seat, not her conflict with Trump.Wehave a $31 trillion deficit because elected members of Congress from all sides continue to overspend and borrow other people’s money. Here’s how it goes: Democrats will propose a one-trillion-dollar spending bill. Republicans feign outrage at such spending and after much groaning and whining, “compromise” on an $850 billion package. Then, they’ll pat themselves on the back and proclaim they’ve pared the $150 billion in the name of “fiscal responsibility.”Thatgamehas been played for so long in Washington, D.C. that even the most fiscally responsible among them no longer believes the spending can ever find a balance between income and outgo. If President Trump had a failing (in addition to his midnight tweets), it was that he too – and he admits this openly – loves “other people’s money.” But my bet is –especially after having watched him for the past seven years – if he came around to espouse the desirability and necessity of a balanced budget, he’d have the wherewithal, the perseverance and the ability to make that happen. He gives a little tilt in that direction in many of his rallies and speeches, but he doesn’t stress it and it’s not a priority. After all, he and his family built their fortune on other people’s money or borrowed money, so it’ll take some convincing that things have gone too far. But, if he can be persuaded of the necessity of reining in spending and if he added a balanced budget proposal to his agenda and won, we’d have a better chance of reaching that goal than with anybody else.

Trump makes sound endorsements

— Donald Trump F ollowing Mao Zedong’s refusedinrevolutionsuccessfulinChina1949,theU.S.torecognize the new communist regime. Instead, America recognized the Nationalist Chinese government that had been established by Chiang Kai-shek in Taiwan. In 1950, during the Korean War, the Chinese sent war supplies to North Korea. During the Vietnamese War, Beijing supported communist North Vietnam. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter shocked the free world when he announced that the United States would formally recognize the communist People’s Republic of China and sever diplomatic relations with the island of Taiwan. This not only angered many members of Congress but most of our allies throughout the free world. And America is living with Carter’s foolish foreign policy blunder today. After the communists rose to power in China in 1949, the U.S. enacted an embargo against the sale of technology and infrastructure products to Communist China. Following the onset of the Korean War, further trade restrictions were imposed. The trade embargo on some imports was lifted under Richard Nixon in 1972. But the U.S. was not trade dependent on China for anything untilAftermid-1990.1990economic ties between the U.S. and China grew rapidly. Following the Carter years of unemployment and inflation along with generous agreements with the labor unions, manufacturers in the U.S. saw this new relationship between China and the U.S. as an economic blessing. “I’ve given up looking for the union label since the only label I see today is “made in China.” — Jay Leno China has delivered some of the most notable economic growth the world has seen since 1990, mostly at the expense of American companies. Since China is communist and untrustworthy, the question many Americans ponder is why did so many companies choose China over democratic nations? Would it not be to our benefit to outsource or trade with democratic allies and friends?Jimmy Carter set the stage for U.S. companies to cut labor and increase profits by outsourcing to China. U.S. companies began moving operations from the U.S. and other countries to China since China had cheap labor, no environmental laws or labor laws and government-run shipping ports. Most importantly, China is still categorized as a “developing” country and enjoys the same “special global entitlements” on shipping and energy as nations like Papua New Guinea and Zimbabwe. With the collapse of USChina relations accelerated by COVID, building a more resilient supply chain has been America’s chief economic necessity. The pandemic exposed the weakness in our supply chain due to our dependence on China for so many essential items. This is an opportunity for us to work with democratic nations like India in building a better and more secure supplyIndia’schain.transport minister Nitin Gadkari recently told the BBC that China’s weakened global position after the COVID crisis is a “blessing” for India to attract more investment. Gadkari said his nation is prepared to take on as much business as China and has the resources to do it. The state of Uttar Pradesh has formed an economic task force to search for firms seeking to relocate from China. “India can replace China as the world’s factory if nations are willing to invest in us.” — Nitin Gadkari DID YOU KNOW? Bonnie Donovan Did You Know was takensomewhatabackat the sudden realization by Governor Gavin Newsom that California cannot save itself from the continuous loss of drinking water caused by non-stop droughts, by simply using less water? How does this co-exist with Newsom’s demand for 2.5 Million new homes to be built by 2031, when the average home uses more than 300 gallons of water per day? That is an additional 750,000,000 gallons a day for the 2.5 million new homes or 273.75 billion gallons of additional water a year. Why did the city of Santa Barbara and county not reject this preposterous number, when it means 8,000 new homes to be built in eight years within city limits alone? The number for the county as a whole is 24,856 additional homes. Where were/are our elected officials in rejecting these numbers from the state? In 2016 SB County had a population of 444,341, by 2022 it is 448,656, a growth of 4,315 in 7 years.Thetarget of 24,856 new homes for the County by 2031 assumes a population growth rate far in excess of recent history if one assumes an average occupancy rate of 2.5 persons per home. That would be 62,140 additional people, or 8,080 per year, double the rate of increase over the last eight years.Same questions. Where are the jobs, and where does the water come from? What investments in services and infrastructure at what costs are needed to support this growth? The population of the city of Santa Barbara decreased from 90,922 in 2016 to 88,255 in 2021. The reduction from 2000 to 2021 was Therefore,1.5%.why is there a need for an additional 8,000 homes over the next 8 years? Where are the additional jobs coming from? What new industries are moving in? Or, is the assumption that retail and hospitality will provide the jobs? Retail is declining and people don’t want jobs in restaurants and hotels. Will the desalination plant have to work full time to provide an additional 300 gallons of water per day, 365 days a year to 8,000 new homes? That’s 876,000,000 more gallons of water we need just for these new homes. We won’t even bring up all the new hotel rooms going in.It took 14 years to produce a desalination plant in Carlsbad. Australia, with 30 desalination plants, achieved time frames of 8 years. How long will an organized statewide water recycling take? Less than 3% of the earth’s water is freshwater. Most of that water is inaccessible. Over 68% of that freshwater is found in glaciers, sheet ice, and icecaps. Just over 3% is found in groundwater. Only about 0.3% of freshwater is found in the surface water of lakes, rivers, streams and swamps. 99% of water is unavailable for use by humans.Glaciers, sheet ice and snow caps are melting rapidly into the oceans, and they are not being replaced. An average healthy human being can live for only 3 - 4 days without water. We concluded, as has Gov. Newsom, that using less water is necessary but insufficient. We cannot put off the necessary investments on a statewide level to guarantee adequate supplies of freshwater for the future. Which is closer than we think. A century of deals in apportioning rights to water from the Colorado river was made between Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, California, Arizona, Nevada and Mexico, plus a number of

Another stated reason for abandoning Trump by many who would otherwise support him is that “it’s hard to elect Republicans in purple states if they are forced to agree with Trump that the election was stolen.” Maybe, but most Republicans believe it was stolen, at least in the literal sense, by Democrat lawyers changing voting rules at the last minute, particularly in the “swing” states, allowing for uncontested and unvetted mail-in ballots harvested over a month-long (and longer) period. It’snot a “lie” if Trump feels the election was rigged. And, ‘The pandemic tested our domestic manufacturing and revealed that our supply chains are broken. We cannot rely on China any longer to produce everything our country needs.”

T he recent news stories about Rodman and Cheney raised the question of whether Elizabeth Lynne Cheney Perry is following the path of Dennis Keith Rodman. Rodman’s story was that he had been “cleared’ to travel to Russia to negotiate for the release of the basketball player Brittny Griner. Rodman’s inheritance, a height of 6’8’’, led to a career of others paying for his playing basketball beginning at a couple of colleges and then the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls. At the Bulls, Michael Jordan’s scoring let Rodman, a very poor scorer, focus on rebounding and defense. As age dwindled Rodman’s basketball skills, he used the media to feature his adopting notorious and controversial antics, such as dying his hair in artificial colors, many piercings and tattoos, regularly disrupting games and wearing a wedding dress to promote his autobiography.

In 2005, when father Dick Chaney was Vice President of the U.S., Liz accepted a position as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Eastern Affairs in the Mid-East and Africa at the State Department. Liz and her husband Phillip Perry, a career bureaucrat, became a “DC power couple.”In2014, Liz’s attempt to become a senator from Wyoming was rejected by the voters. In 2016, Trump rejuvenated Liz’s failing political career when those same voters approved of her riding the “Trump wave.” Despite not working in Wyoming, she became the Wyoming representative in congress. After Liz voted 93% of the time for Trump’s programs, during the final days of his presidency Liz’ antics began when she proclaimed that she would vote to impeach him before there had even been a hearing. Could the reason have been Liz’ long-held

T o be Woke is another and truthfully never even understood what it actually meant. But I took a greater interest in using it when the Wokers started pushing back against being labeled with that word. That’s when I loved it. Woke. Woke. Woke. Wokeness has now come to mean everything stupid. You’re woke if you support defunding the police. You’re woke if you support no bail. You’re woke if you like to see criminals let out of jail. You’re woke if you think indoctrinating children about gender changes is a good idea, in kindergarten! You’re woke if you push racism in school by telling all white kids they’re horrible little creatures. You’re woke if you’re still pushing the vaccine even though Fauci and Biden after 42 (sarcasm) boosters still got COVID, twice. And you’re woke if you keep believing that if they didn’t get those boosters, it would have been much worse. Nobody knows that. Everything we’ve been told has been wrong and/ or a Wokenesslie. is buying into January 6 labeled as an insurrection because Nancy Pelosi told you so. An insurrection is a takeover of a country, usually with guns. The only person with a gun that got fired was a capital police officer who murdered an unarmed woman and not a thing happened to him. Wokeness is believing the Biden administration is telling you the truth that the border is secure because the mainstream media chooses to ignore actual news and hides wokeness ideals. You’re woke if you think Joe Biden and Hunter are just a couple nice guys making millions off America’s most dangerous enemy. Again, because the mainstream buries the truth. It makes breaking into an office building (Watergate) seem silly. You’re super woke if you believe there are more than two genders. There are does and bucks. Hens and roosters. Stallions and mares. I t has been reported that city of Santa Barbara employees have deemed certain neighborhoods as the ones where new future housing developments are to be located. That is, the Eastside, the Westside, Milpas corridor and others. Mostly Latino and low income. But not in upscale, traditionally white neighborhoods such as the Mesa, San Roque or Samarkand. From a state law that benefits the beloved developers, the cheaper land costs will guarantee maximum return on their investment.

Dave Blunk Santa Barbara

A recent federal investigation found that the city of Chicago has continued a discriminatory pattern of “encouraging” the relocation of certain businesses out of white neighborhoods into non-white neighborhoods. This violates national civil rights law. This practice was benefitting white neighborhoods at the expense of black and Latino citizens. One Chicagoan claimed the city was “upholding environmental racism.” The city of Chicago even took part in an agreement to move a business to a different neighborhood. The federal investigation stated: “Absent the City’s driving role, the relocation would not have occurred.”Thisstate edict smells like bad fish. What is infuriating is that when these new units are built, some are purchased as second or third homes by the rich, or turned into weekend motels (which directly benefits city income), and the people that were displaced will never be able to afford them.

How then shall we live?

A re you aware of the IRS having more firearms than the U. S. Marine Corps has soldiers? It has been reported the IRS spent $725,000 on ammunition. It has stockpiled 4,500 guns and 5 million rounds of ammunition.ADecember 2020 report from American Transparency highlights how 103 executive agencies outside the Department of Defense spent $2.7 billion on guns, ammunition and military equipment between 2016 and 2019. The Department of Veteran Affairs spent $11.6 million on guns, ammunition, body armor, chemical weapons and military supplies. The Animal and Plant Inspection Service spent $3.9 million on much the same including unmanned aircraft, and even the Railroad Retirement Board spent $50,088 on guns, ammunition and similar gear. Is this arming the federal agents, while taking guns away from citizens, a new safety measure thought out by “the president”?Investigative journalist Adam Andrzejewski, the founder of American Transparency, has been reporting on this since the Obama administration. One of the latest guidelines from the state’s Franchise Tax Board (FTB) overturns commonly accepted rules about who has the right to tax the sale of partnership interests. Traditionally, the sale of these interests is a taxable gain for the seller’s state of residence, but not for other states, even if the partnership in question holds assets in another state. Consider the sale of stock shares. The corporation that the share represents an interest in may have assets all around the country, but the seller does not need to pay capital gains tax to each state that the corporation holds assets in or derives income from. Instead, they pay capital gains tax to their resident state, and the federal government. That’susually how it works for partnership interests as well, but the FTB is seeking to change that. The FTB’s guidance applies rules under Section 751 or the Internal Revenue Code, intended only to apply to federal taxes, to state taxation of Section 751 assets, giving itself the right to tax a portion of nonresidents’ partnership sales as business income.Alone, that’s a slightly wonky tax ruling. However, the recent history of FTB actions shows that it is representative of a trend.

Example 1: Environmental activists want to limit commercial fishing. They want Congress to pass what they call the “Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act.” It claims climate change is the “greatest threat to America’s national security” and offers a dubious solution: close more of the ocean to commercial fishing. The administration’s deputy director of Climate, Jane Lubchenco, told Congress that a scientific paper concludes that closing more of the ocean can actually increase catches of fish. Really? That doesn’t seem logical.Itisn’t. The paper was retracted. One scientist called its logic “biologically impossible.”Also,Lubchenco didn’t tell Congress that the paper was written by her brother-in-law! And edited by her! Did the White House punish Lubchenco for her ethics violations? No. In fact, after her testimony, she was appointed co-head of President Joe Biden’s Scientific Integrity Task Force! Last week, the National Academy of Sciences banned her for five years. Yet she’s still on the White House’s Scientific Integrity Task Force. Sadly, much of what’s called science today is simply left-wing advocacy.“Newfields like fat studies, African studies, Latinx studies, queer studies,” says Follet, “are essentially entirely fake.” Fake? Well, they must be. “Experts” in those fields keep

F or some time now, California has been the worst state in the country when it comes to exploiting the most tangential of connections to claim tax liability. Recently, the state reasserted its claim to this dubious distinction by attempting to claim the right to tax the sale of partnership interests by nonresidents.Thepaceat which taxpayers, both business and individual, have continued to flee the state for greener pastures has only accelerated in recent years. The most recent tax migration data, looking at the difference between tax years 2018 and 2019, finds that California lost over 117,000 taxpaying households and just under $18 billion in adjusted gross income from its tax rolls. One would think California would learn that the way to keep taxpayers from running for the hills would be to create a fairer and more competitive tax code. Unfortunately, the state has instead responded to this trend by ramping up its efforts to catch out-ofstate taxpayers in its tax web.

North Korea’s continuing economic decline Michelle Malkin

SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS SUNDAY, AUGUST 28, 2022 C3VOICES

P redictably, North Korea has rejected an offer from the South Korean government of economic aid in return for nuclear disarmament. South Korea’s new President Yoon Sukyeol initially made the suggestion during his inauguration in May. On August 15, he advanced the proposal in a speech. In a switch from customary practice, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un did not reply. Rather, his sister Kim Yo-jong, also a senior party official in the government, on Aug. 19 rejected the practicestandardinsultpersonalincludecarefulSheoffer.wastoaofYoon,forPyongyang.

Chao’s family shipping behemoth, Foremost Group, is a mega-fleet built in China, subsidized with loans from the ChiComs’ ExportImport bank and dependent on China for nearly three-quarters of its freight Reminder:business.Secretary Chao was designated an “international consultant” of the Wuhan government in 2009. Her sister, Angela Chao, is CEO of Foremost and organized a humanitarian shipment of masks, gloves and gowns from New York to Wuhan in partnership with the “Hubei Charity Foundation” in the midst of the pandemic panic. In November 2020, the Transportation Department promised a response on a “first-in/first-out basis” to my FOIA request for a copy of all emails sent to, from or copied to Secretary Elaine Chao from Oct. 1, 2019 to the present day, containing the non-case-sensitive key-string Wuhan, Corona, COVID-19, virus, coronavirus, Hubei, Chinatown, pandemic or Foremost Group. Seven months later, in June 2021, DOT FOIA officer Michael C. Bell promised a response in “approximately 6-8 weeks.” Seven months after that, Jan. 7, 2022, Chao resigned from the White House in a virtue-signaling protest against the Capitol rally. She claimed to be “deeply troubled … in a way I simply cannot set McChao’saside.”America Last treachery has deeply troubled me in a way I simply cannot set aside since 2001, when I first lambasted their campaign finance and lobbying dalliances with Chinagate operatives John Huang and Maria Hsia (who helped McConnell draft the EB-5 globalist grift program peddling green cards to wealthy Chinese investors).Thetreacherous writing has been on the Swamp wall for decades. Methinks it’s a little late now to start balking at McChao’s hackery and greed. Like The snake in Trump’s favorite campaign parable told the old woman it bit after she nursed the reptile to health: “You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in.”

Here’s the thing about Mitch McConnell and Elaine Chao. The granddaddy of Republican Beltway barnacles has inhabited the nation’s capital in one form or another since 1968, when he worked as a Senate legislative aide. His wife, the daughter of a Beijing-kowtowing shipping mogul, snagged her first job in 1983 as a White House fellow under the Reagan administration. For a half-century, this Swamp duo has done out in the great wide open what Swamp things do: Grift. Rinse. Repeat. The whole of these two partisan animals is far greater than the sum of their grift-y parts. According to Forbes, McChao’s net worth now hovers around $30 million. Moldy-oldy McConnell’s Senate leadership position helped Chao land plum spots as George W. Bush’s Labor Secretary from 2001-2009 and Donald Trump’s Transportation Secretary from 2017-2021. She used her Trump appointment as her personal family fiefdom, according to the Department of Transportation inspector general, where she pimped her father’s biography while he helmed the Foremost Group. Chao demanded that her family members in top offices at the company participate in one of her official planned visits to China (later canceled amid public scrutiny). She also directed her staff to edit her daddy’s Wikipedia page, tried to pull strings with Homeland Security over a work permit application for a student supported by her family’s hubbyprojects$80appearedfoundationphilanthropicandtosteernearlymillioninhighwaytoKentuckyaspreparedtocampaign for reelection.McConnell and Chao have been scratching each other’s Swamp backs (and those of their ChiCom friends and family) for so long, there are scars on the scars. Former President Donald Trump was right this weekend to deride McConnell as a “broken down hack politician” and to call out Chao for her brazen attempts to “get rich on China!” But the plain, unvarnished truth is that Trump himself empowered and enriched McChao by rewarding them time and again with endorsements and favors. During Trump’s tenure, the DOJ refused to pursue a criminal investigation against Chao for her multiple abuses of office. Meanwhile, the Transportation Department dragged its feet on my public records request from April 2020 seeking emails and other communications regarding a shady shipment of nearly 18 tons of medical supplies to the Chinese touted as a “testament to the generosity of the American people.”“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” I wrote at the time. “Nearly 18 tons of critical medical supplies went to the Communist government whose country unleashed COVID-19 on the world, downplayed it, punished whistleblowers who warned about it and attacked critics worldwide as racist? Whose idea was this ‘generosity’? Which ‘American people’ approved this plan? Was the aid solicited or unsolicited?”“Bywhatmeans were the 18 tons of medical goods transported: Air or sea? If by sea, on what ships were the goods transported to China and when and where did they arrive? If by air, which carriers transported the goods and when and where did they arrive?”Iasked about shipping because

However, the fact that she appeared in place of her brother will greatly fuel rumors that he suffers from serious health problems. President Yoon’s proposal nonetheless is an important gesture, especially since his government generally takes a hardline approach toward North Korea.Undeniable is the reality that North Korea is in desperate economic difficulty. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the nation’s long-apparent economic deterioration to a crisis point. Trade and wider interchange with China has contracted, while longterm economic sanctions under the United Nations slowly strangle commerce.Belligerence remains the default Pyongyang position. On June 5, North Korea launched eight short-range missiles, the most ever in one day. The next day, South Korea and the United States launched the same number of missiles. North Korea also has tested a missile capable of reaching the United States. As argued in previous columns, the basic realities of North Korea are unchanging. First, for many years Pyongyang has been inconsistent, often erratic. In 2013, the regime declared a “state of war” with South Korea and abruptly abrogated the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War. Yet, accommodating moves followed. President Donald Trump conducted highly publicized meetings with Kim Jong-un, but nothing was achieved. Second, we must emphasize defense of South Korea, within wider Asia security. The Biden administration is doing precisely this with extensive Asia trips this year of President Biden and Defense Secretary Austin. Third, we should emphasize coordination with other nations. In 2017, Japan reenergized fitful security discussions, involving Australia, India and the United States. Dubbed the Quad, this security dialogue is important. South Korea’s substantial investment in and trade with China grows, while North Korea remains a costly dependent, though ideologically important. China’s President Xi Jinping visited Seoul in 2014. He finally visited North Korea in 2019. China’s foreign policy reflects self-interest and traditional caution regarding military force. North Korea is a drain, and over time a source of growing wellfounded anxiety. The brutal Korean War of 1950 to 1953 is essential background. President Harry Truman decided to support the United Nations’ defense against Pyongyang’s invasion of South Korea. President Dwight Eisenhower quickly achieved an armistice in the Korean War. A crucial factor was devastating unrestrained bombing of North Korea. Pyongyang’s hostility today reflects this frightening history. Democratic change culminated with the election in 1998 of President Kim Dae-jung, heroic opponent of dictatorship. In 2000, he received the Nobel Peace Prize. During the earlier dictatorship, Kim survived imprisonment and at least one attempt to kill him. Periodic turmoil since 1998 has reinforced South Korea’s democracy. U.S. leaders should emphasize collaboration with allies, underscore commitment, and continue encouraging South Korean leadership. The Biden administration is returning to traditional, very strong emphasis on working with our principal allies, including closer military tiescooperation.PowerfulcomprehensivewithSouthKoreafrom the Korean War, greatly reinforced during the Vietnam War, is a lynchpin.

Most notably, the FTB took the lead this year in applying a somewhat goofy interpretation of federal Public Law 86-272, which protects out-of-state businesses from income tax obligations in states in which their only activity is the sale of tangible goods. The FTB became the first state, since followed by aggressive tax enforcement protégé New York, to claim it could ignore those protections so long as the business in question maintained a website with a number of common functions. These included a “virtual chat” customer service

feature, the use of digital “cookies,” and enabling job applications through the website, among others. Taken together, this laundry list threatens to rope in just about any business selling into California and operating a modern website. Another example is the FTB’s application of its “doing business” tax to nonresident passive investors in LLCs that have ownership shares in California businesses, almost by definition not “doing business.” To enforce this, the FTB engages in extrajudicial seizures of out-of-state taxpayers’ assets from banks with California branches, often causing the unfortunate involuntary “taxpayers” significant bank fees for these seizures.Theseare just a few examples of how aggressive the FTB has become, as a more comprehensive list could not possibly fit in a single column. Nevertheless, the trend is quite clear: taxpayers of all stripes expose themselves to even the most limited of connections to the state of California at their ownAndperil.while these aggressive state actions are profitable in the short term, they do lasting damage to the economy at large, as well as principles of tax fairness. If California can’t learn that its tax jurisdiction ends where its borders do, either the courts or Congress must teach them. In a recent address to the nation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made “be vocal for local” his rallying cry. And new stimulus proposals have increased opportunities for foreign companies bidding for Indian contracts. Nisha Biswal recently said, “The more India can improve regulatory stability, the better its chances of persuading more global businesses to establish hubs in India.”With America weighing punitive action against China, Japan paying its corporations to move out of the country and English lawmakers under pressure to reconsider the decision to allow the Chinese telecom giant Huawei to build their new 5G data network, global antiChina sentiment is increasing.

The above three candidates are apparently not polling well, and the fear is they’ll lose, and that the Senate will remain in Democrat hands. My guess is that the polls are purposely skewed (rigged?) and that the Senate goes Republican. I agree with Trump’s detractors regarding only one race, and that is for governor of Georgia. Brian Kemp fell afoul of Donald Trump after the 2020 election, and Trump has turned his back on one of the best Republican governors in the nation (Kemp comes in third after DeSantis in Florida and Youngkin in Virginia).

SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS SUNDAY, AUGUST 28, 2022C4 VOICES in fairness, it’s not a “lie” when Stacey Abrams says her election for governor of Georgia was rigged. It may not be true, but it’s not a lie, which is, by definition, a statement made by someone who knows what he or she is saying is untrue. If this is explained to a purple state’s electorate, most will understand the distinction and voteThoseaccordingly.whobelieve that choosing Republicans who will stand up for Republicanism’s fetish with smaller government, more personal freedom and less spending but with a lesser chance of winning, is counterproductive, I suggest analyzing Mitt Romney. He is good for one thing: choosing a majority leader. But if the Senate were split evenly again (in 2024) he’s the one guy who could and would “reach across the aisle” and vote against some particularly nettlesome bill that would solidify Republican policy and repudiate Democratic wishes. So, who needs him, or Senators like him? I don’t believe any Senate seats will be lost because of Trump’s choices or his insistence that his election was stolen. I believe JD Vance wins easily in Ohio. Dr. Oz has a tougher job in Pennsylvania, but I believe he’ll win by a small percentage, as will Herschel Walker in Georgia, as will other candidates the media is attempting to portray as “out of the mainstream” and/ or “dangerous to democracy” or some such crap.

Former Financial Times bureau chief Rahul Jacob said the Indian government is putting together land banks to accommodate new factories, which is a step in the right direction. “Companies that already have some manufacturing in India may be earlier movers in reducing output in plants in China and scaling up in production in India. But it will take time to convince others to relocate.”

But Gov. Kemp is going to wipe the floor with Abrams, no matter how much money she raises, so don’t worry about that outcome. See you next week, when we’ll examine and correct the various and myriad untruths, lies and misinformation spinning around the Internet about President Trump.

The US-India Business Council (USIBC), a powerful lobby group that works to enhance investment flows between India and the U.S., said that India can handle all of the business they can get. India is on the move and it is ready to compete.”

Indian tribes. California is entitled to more than a third of the river’s natural flow. In 2019, a contingency plan effective through 2026 was agreed to laying out which state gets cuts in water supply from the lower Colorado River Basin. California’s cutback starts when Lake Mead’s water levels reach between 1,040 feet and 1,045 feet. Lake Mead will be below 1,040 feet by year-end 2022. The generation of electric power from the Hoover Dam will be under stress. On July 22, Lake Mead was at 27% of capacity and falling. Lake Powell, also on the Colorado River, is at 24.81% of capacity and falling. Shasta Lake in California was only 37% full in February 2022. Oroville Lake was 42% of the total capacity on January 12. In California, more and more water is being drawn from aquifers at a much faster rate than it can be replenished by natural water flows from rain, snow, rivers and man-made replenishment sources. The results are devastating. Millions of acre-feet of water have been permanently removed from aquifers which are our last natural resource against eventual water starvation. In the examples below, accessible water in aquifers has fallen by more than 100 feet between 1930/1950 and 2016/2017. This is a huge loss of capacity. The natural replenishment of aquifer water levels from surface water, rain and snowmelt cannot keep up with the water extraction rates because, at the same time, these water sources are declining from years of long droughts. In California, agriculture is a $50 billion a year industry that uses 80% of the available water in California.In1920,the population of California was 3,426,861. Today, the population of California is 39,185,605. That is a growth of 11.43 times the 1920 population. In Fresno, the depth to reach groundwater in the aquifer in 1930 was 25 feet. By 2016, the depth of groundwater had increased to 130 ft. The population grew from about 70,000 to 550,000. In Clovis, the depth to reach groundwater was 25 feet in 1950. By 2017 it was 145 feet. The population grew from around 13,000 to about 120,000.Fresno County is part of The North Kings Groundwater Sustainability Agency. In 2020 it proposed a plan to bring into balance the usage and replenishment of the aquifers. California needs activated aquifer usage/replenishment balance actions in place everywhere aquifers are being used to replace lost surface water supplies due to continuous droughts. We know that we are not doing nearly enough to recycle water on a massive scale. We are not doing enough to replenish lost water in the many aquifers now substituting for surface water. We are not doing nearly enough to capture and store water from rain and snowmelt, both of which are declining in volume and frequency every year. We are not doing enough to capture and convert brackish water and sea water into potable water, nor enough to capture water from the humid air in our long coastal regions. California should be a leader in water management research and technology. Yes, probably, there are plans in place to do some of this in California. But where is the urgency, the funding, the contracts or even the accelerated approvals process? If California’s experience with high-speed rail is our guide, we are in trouble. Follett blames this perversion of science on the government. Its science agencies, like much of America, have been taken over by leftists hungry to promote themselves and their agenda. In science, the way to promote yourself is to get papers published. That often gets you more funding. Government agencies like the National Science Foundation provide most of that funding. “Nobody wants to publish something that goes against the paymaster,” says Follett. “You don’t get published unless the NSF likes yourExampleresults.”3: The NSF gave nearly half a million dollars to a team that wrote a paper questioning glacier science because it “stems from knowledge created by men.” Absurdities are pushed by the right, too. Some people still claim that man plays no part in climate change or that the climate isn’t warming at all. Some say vaccines don’t work. But the right’s junk science doesn’t get backed by government funds. I’m angry that my tax dollars go to support leftist nonsense. Unfortunately, most Americans don’t care. That’s probably because they don’t know that the government throws so much money at ridiculous progressive advocacy. “We’ll all start caring when the bridges start falling down and the planes start crashing,” says Follet. “That’s the inevitable end result of this.”

Federation of Indian Export Organizations Vice President Khalid Khan said, “India is emerging as a trusted trading partner and global firms like the U.S. are reducing their dependence on nations like China for supplies.” Khan noted that nations around the world have lost trust in China after COVID.In2021, America surpassed China as India’s top trading partner, which demonstrates the improved economic ties between the two countries. stronger. It’s just wrong. You’re woke if you agree that it’s okay to steal and destroy something that’s not yours and have carte blanche because of skin color. If you think driving an electric car will reduce your guilt because you’re doing your part for “climate change,” but fail to realize the power to charge your vehicle comes from a coal producing plant, you’re woke. And while you’re trying to do your part, elitist Hollywood and hypocritical politicians and China, India and Africa laugh at your fruitless efforts and continue spewing massive amounts of evil carbon in the atmosphere. And for those (mostly the guilty rich) who used a forest somewhere to offset their “carbon footprint,” only to find your silly attempt failed because the forest burned down because environmentalists fought against forestYou’remanagement.NOTwoke if you love this country and stand by its constitution and you’re willing to defend it to the death. You’re not woke if you believe you have the right to defend yourself. You’re not woke if you believe in fair and honest elections. You’re not woke if you believe in private property. You’re not woke if you believe in real free speech. And you’re not woke when you don’t have to prove everyone is equal, you already know that. And finally, if you’re in the 25% or so left in this country who still think Joe Biden is doing a good job, then you’re sleeping. It forced Bangladesh to significantly improve its infrastructure and safety to clinch moreHenryinvestment.Fordtold us, “The cheapest investment is usually the most insecure.” World markets have walked on eggshells around China too long to take advantage of their cheap labor at the expense of their economic futures. We must be proactive and turn to countries like India and Mexico in the rebuilding of our supply chains. This cannot be done overnight, but the time has come for us to act now. China has proven it can bring the world economy to its knees. Are we ready for COVID-2?
