Spaceport seen as Vandenberg’s destiny

Old Spanish Days kicks of COVID-modified Fiesta with La Fiesta Pequena telecast

Organizations announce united efforts By DAVE MASON NEWS-PRESS MANAGING EDITOR

Officials talked excitedly Wednesday about Vandenberg Air Force Base’s future — one that could lead to thousands of new jobs. It depends on establishing a thriving spaceport. “Vandenberg is space country,” an upbeat Col. Anthony Mastalir, 30th Space Wing commander at Vandenberg, told the News-Press and other media Wednesday. Col. Mastalir spoke during online news conferences that announced a memorandum of understanding among the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, the 30th Space Wing, Cal Poly, REACH and Deloitte Consulting LLP. The memorandum covers the development of a master plan for the space program at Vandenberg, which has been a launch site for unmanned NASA and military missions. The agreement includes identifying the required infrastructure, human capital development, governance and financing needed to support the U.S. Space Force mission. The memorandum also emphasizes making California a global leader in the commercial space industry.

Wednesday’s news conferences included representatives of the participants in the master plan. Speakers also included Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham, R-San Luis Obispo, and Josh Brost, vice president of business development of Relativity Space, which is manufacturing rockets through 3D-printing and setting up a new launch space at Vandenberg. The parties are working toward making Vandenberg a thriving spaceport. That could lead to many new jobs at the base and support industries. Please see space on A2

The 2020 Spirit of Fiesta Alena Velasco performs during Wednesday night’s opening ceremony for Old Spanish Days.

By JOSH GREGA NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Rather than the grand, in-person spectacular performed before a large crowd at the Santa Barbara Mission, Old Spanish Days began this year’s Fiesta with what el presidente Erik Davis called “the Santa Barbara televised event of the year.” The kickoff performance for this year’s Fiesta, La Fiesta Pequena, was broadcast Wednesday night in a program on KEYT Newschannel 3 and showcased a mix of live performances, interviews, and archival footage from past Fiestas.

The former danced to Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalia’s “Pienso en tu mira,” while the Junior Spirit danced to “Cambalache” by Fernando Terremoto. Both songs are in the flamenco style buleria, and the Rosalia song marries traditional flamenco with modern pop music, according to Alena. Community members came together on Wednesday at Santa Barbara City Hall to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting ceremony of Old Spanish Days 2020 Fiesta. Goleta agrees on train depot project By JORGE MERCADO NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

The Goleta City Council held a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to get an update from the staff on the Goleta Train Depot Project as well as voting unanimously to select the “traditional theme” over the “sunrise” and “schooner” themes for the design. Once completed, the Goleta Train Depot will be a full-service multi-modal train station next to the existing Amtrak platform on South La Patera Lane. The “traditional” design takes inspiration from Goleta’s agricultural history as well as the historic nature of many of the historical train depots found throughout California, including Goleta’s historic depot that now serves as the home of the South Coast Railroad Museum. “I’m glad we are moving forward. There seems to be a positive team here and that is always good news for a project,” Anil Verma, owner of Anil Verma V Associate, said during Wednesday’s special meeting. “What is really exciting about this project, the site is located right between the 101 (freeway) and the ocean and mountains, and so it’s just a magnificent area to be dealing with.” Additionally, the council also voted to defer a decision on roadway improvements from Hollister Avenue to the terminus of South La Patera Lane to the Fall of 2020.

“Thank you Madam Chair and members of the council for your support of the project. We look forward to our continued work with the community in moving this wonderful project forward and bringing it to Goleta,” Vyto Adomaitis, Department of Neighborhood Services & Public Safety Director, said. “When it’s built -- as you can just see from the drawings alone -- it’s going to be an incredible project for our community, and we look forward to seeing you in October with discussion about the public improvements on La Patera.” The project is being designed by Anil Verma Associate. The project is expected not to exceed $2.4 million dollars with the term of agreement expiring on June 30, 2022. In terms of cost, the “traditional” theme was the most economical choice as the other two would have cost slightly more. Also, now that the council has settled on the theme of the project, this allows the design team to focus deeper on the construction and the details of what to add. “For the purposes of trying to get a project afloat and getting people to comment on it can be really hard to have some kind of a starting point, so you can’t have too many variables at one point,” Mr. Verma said. He also added that regardless which theme was selected, they all would be built the same and acPlease see depot on A9

The California Pizza Kitchen in Paseo Nuevo remains open after the chain’s recent filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

By JOSH GREGA NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

After California Pizza Kitchen’s recent filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the chain’s Santa Barbara franchise didn’t respond to the News-Press’ inquiries regarding the location’s future.  If a July 30 statement from CEO Jim Hyatt on the CPK website is any indication, however, the bankruptcy filing will not result in the Paseo Nuevo franchise closing. “Prior to the filing, CPK closed some restaurants in the United States due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and lease related challenges with our landlords. We do not have plans to close any additional restaurants at this time,â€? the statement read. That said, the website’s “frequently asked questionsâ€? section states that the company is in discussions with its franchises’ landlords “to determine our goforward plan in regards to certain other locations.â€?  CPK’s filing for voluntary Chapter 11 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas is meant to allow for the chain

to enter into a restructuring agreement with its senior lenders that will equitize most of its longterm debt. According to the CEO’s statement, the restructuring agreement includes a commitment for $46.8 million in new financing that will allow CPK restaurants to keep operating. The $46.8 million is debtor-in-possession financing designed to fund operating needs of companies that have filed for Chapter 11 protection. “This proactive filing will allow us the ability to reduce our longterm debt load and emerge as a much stronger company,â€? it reads. “We anticipate a short stay in Chapter 11 and expect to progress on an expedited timeline. Our goal is to complete the Chapter 11 process in under three months.â€? The FAQs on the CPK website regarding its restructuring stress that the chain is not going out of business, and that restaurants will keep operating in the “ordinary course.â€? This entails continued compliance with all local, state, and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19.    email: jgrega@newspress.com

The August gloom didn’t deter local youths, who participated in the Junior Lifeguard camp Monday morning at Leadbetter Beach. Cool weather is expected to prevail today with a forecasted high of 71 degrees in Santa Barbara. Conditions were even colder for the Junior Lifeguards, who trained in the Pacific Ocean that was in the mid-60s on Monday and Tuesday. The cold water didn’t them or the birds.

Pizzas with cauliflower crust Organic basil with roots Roots Farm and The Garden Of… have their seasonal offerings of their fresh basil, pulled from the ground with the roots still intact. Instead of going into the refrigerator, it can instead be placed in a large Mason jar or a flower vase and placed on the countertop to then be harvested as needed in the kitchen. You can find organically grown basil with the roots at the weekly Saturday Santa Barbara, Tuesday Santa Barbara and Wednesday Solvang farmers markets. Use basil in a pesto (Roots Farm owner Jacob Grant recommends using cashews instead of pine nuts) or in a pasta sauce of a refreshing farmers market gazpacho, as in this week’s Fix on A6. Price averages $2.50 per bunch.

Customers can order the cauliflower crust with any kind of pizza. “You can design it however you want. There are no limitations,” Tyler Duncan of Rusty’s Pizza Parlor said.

Tomatillos Tomatillos are the heart of any salsa verde you have likely enjoyed at your favorite Mexican restaurant. This member of the nightshade family is being actively harvested by several local farmers, including Mike Iniguez of Ebby’s Organic Farm of Goleta. Also known as a “Mexican husk tomato,” tomatillos are recognized by their round shape and papery skin that encases the fruit. The fruit ranges from lime green to yellow as it further matures on the vine. There are also some varieties that yield a purple hue as well. Tomatillos are currently available at all weekly Santa Barbara Certified Farmers markets. Price averages $3 per pound.

The Rusty’s pizza with the new cauliflower crust contains 10 grams of protein, two servings of fresh vegetables and three net carbs.

“I kind of think timing is everything and the response has been incredible,” Mr. Duncan said. “We did a lot of searching for other products over the years, but you know a lot of them might be gluten-free or they might be this or that, but the Outer Aisle product just checks all the boxes in terms of what we were looking for to offer our customers.”

Red bell peppers Sweet, crisp and absent of the majority of the bitter presence found in its green counterpart, bell peppers are excellent when enjoyed in both raw and cooked preparations. Blister and remove the skin to puree into a sauce, top a salad or add to a sandwich. Enjoy the peppers in a stir-fry, rice dishes or kale salads, or stuff them with cooked rice, ground beef and veggies, before baking and serving as a meal. Red bell peppers are currently available from several local farmers at all weekly Santa Barbara certified farmers’ markets. Certified organic are available. Price averages $3 per pound. usty’s Pizza Parlor has joined forces with Outer Aisle to create a cauliflower pizza crust. The new low-carb, high-protein crust is the Santa Barbara pizza business’ third crust option. The others are pan and thin. Founded in Isla Vista in 1969, Rusty’s Pizza Parlor is a family-owned restaurant that now features nine locations in the Santa Barbara area. Tyler Duncan, the owner and president of Rusty’s Pizza, told the News-Press he is pleased about how well Outer Aisle’s crust fits perfectly into Rusty’s product line. “Our customers, family members and friends have been asking for a gluten-free pizza crust at Rusty’s for a while now,” said Mr. Duncan, son of the company’s founders, Roger and Carol Duncan. “We are beyond excited to work with a fellow local company to meet this demand and make that low-carb, gluten-free crust a reality. No other crust compares, and we’re confident this partnership will meet our fans’ high expectations when it comes to the quality and taste they expect from a Rusty’s pizza.” Outer Aisle is a Santa Barbara company Please see rusty’s on A6

started with two giant heirloom tomatoes. I’m not exactly sure what the specific varieties were, but they were each approaching a pound in weight. I chose to remove the skin, but I could have simply left it on, and it wouldn’t have made a significant difference. Next, I reached for two Persian cucumbers, a variety often preferred due to its thin skin and no need to peel, and trimmed the ends and in they went. I got a few cloves of garlic, and Anaheim chili pepper and a half a jalapeño pepper, both seeded and stems discarded. Then came the basil, which was incredibly aromatic. I selected about a half-dozen perfect large bright green leaves. In they went. I had juice from a Meyer Lemon, a few shakes of Worcestershire sauce, some good quality balsamic vinegar, olive oil and a seasoning of salt of pepper. My first homemade gazpacho of the season was just around the corner. One of my favorite summer meals, converging some of the summer’s best offerings in a pulsating blender, this chilled raw soup really hits the spot on a warm summer afternoon or evening. I even sipped on a Mason jar full along with my scrambled eggs as a breakfast beverage, brimming with nutrients and flavor. The types of peppers, tomatoes and even fresh herbs can be swapped to alter the final produce, as well as during a round rustic blender of smoother blend.

SAM EDELMAN PHOTO

I often will incorporate fresh mint into my concoctions and have even tossed in a few large chunks of watermelon, although that would not abide by a traditional gazpacho recipe. Make sure to have some toasted bread rounds or garlicky croutons on hand to enjoy with your chilled soup. Farmers’ Market Gazpacho 1½ pounds tomatoes — any variety you prefer, remove skins optional 2 medium cucumbers — ends trimmed, cut in half. If using Persian cucumbers there is no need to peel. If using general cucumbers, peel. 1 medium non-spicy pepper — seeds, membrane and seeds discarded; cut in half. I used an Anaheim chili pepper, but

a pimento would also be a nice addition. 3 cloves garlic, peeled ½ jalapeño pepper. Omit if heat sensitive. 6 large basil leaves Juice from 1 lemon (use Meyer if available) 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon good quality balsamic vinegar ¼ cup olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Place all ingredients in a blender and secure lid. Pulsate the blender until desired consistency is reached. If you need a little more liquid, you can add a little tomato juice. I prefer a more chucky consistency, but you can also blend smooth if desired. Yield: Serves about 4.

happen - especially now. LIBRA — Your engine may sputter this morning as your gears begin to turn, Libra. It could be that you’re working out something important in your mind that’s helping clarify your emotions. The answer you seek is probably nothing like the one you’ll find. By the time night comes, you’ll have everything figured out. All the answers you need will be right there in front of you. SCORPIO — Be careful not to overdo things today, Scorpio. You may so zealously want to meet your goals that you overshoot the mark by quite a bit. Feel free to express your exuberance and let your enthusiasm shine in whatever you do. At the same time, be careful about getting so carried away that you don’t notice that you’ve already reached the finish line. SAGITTARIUS — Tempers may get hot today when someone says something that pierces you to your core. Address this problem right away, Sagittarius, instead of letting it fester through the rest of the day. The solution requires sensitivity and caring. Let the offender know that he or she has hurt you significantly, if that is indeed the case. There’s no need for you to try to hide your feelings. CAPRICORN — Don’t be surprised if you leap out of bed with a spark of inspiration that wasn’t there last night, Capricorn. Let your dreams linger a bit before you face the world. This flash of genius is likely to strike quickly and unexpectedly, so keep an eye out for it, but don’t consider it something that you can plan on or force into happening. AQUARIUS — Sometimes your emotions overtake your rational thoughts, Aquarius, and you end up acting on impulse. Today you’ll find that your head and heart are aligned on significant issues, and that they’re working well together. Try not to swing the other way by becoming too rational. Your goal is to find the best working balance. PISCES — Review your day as you watch the sunset and observe the clouds turning from white to purple, Pisces. Make sure that your head is in tune with your heart. Think about the day’s emotions and thought patterns and how they affected your actions. Determine if your actions were a result of either your rational mind or fluctuating moods.

HOROSCOPE ARIES — Your mind is buzzing like a bee, Aries. You’re apt to find that there’s very little you can do to slow it down. Make sure you add compassion to the chain that’s holding everything together. Also make sure that you don’t become a victim of your thoughts by losing control over how you act simply because the voice in your head has completely taken over. TAURUS — Mornings aren’t usually your best time, Taurus. You aren’t fully awake until afternoon. Try not to discount the events of this particular morning, however. More than likely, you’ll enjoy your best mental clarity sometime before noon. Surprise people with an upbeat attitude and a solution for every problem that comes your way. GEMINI — Your world may seem rather tight and rigid this morning, Gemini, but the good news is that difficulties are apt to melt away as the day progresses. Don’t assume that opinions are fixed in stone. Things can change in an instant. Even if they seem one way at one point, more than likely they’re going to manifest themselves completely differently later. CANCER — This is one of those days in which you’re better able to stand back and look at your emotions intellectually, Cancer. Your freedom-loving nature isn’t built to deal with heavy emotional baggage and turmoil, so don’t bother trying. Be especially wary of those who seem to plop a problem in front of you and expect you to deal with it. LEO — Prepare for a surprise today, Leo. Perhaps it will come from someone else or perhaps it will come from you. Either way, by evening you’re apt to be feeling quite lovey-dovey and rather spaced out. Give in to the lethargic attitude that might sweep over you. This is your time to play, so put work aside and have a good time while letting your emotions dictate your actions. VIRGO — Things seem to be going quite well for you in many respects, Virgo. Your thinking is clear, your emotions are under control, and the puzzle pieces are fitting into place. This is your time to take advantage of these pockets of good fortune and turn them into something huge. You have the power to make anything

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

SBCC promotes Perry to head softball coach By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

COURTESY PHOTO

Jasmyne Perry, who has been promoted by SBCC to head women’s softball coach, enjoys Dos Pueblos High’s Alumni Softball Game of 2018 with her daughter Brooklyn.

Santa Barbara City College didn’t have to go far to find a replacement for women’s softball coach Justine Bosio. Jasmyne Perry, Bosio’s assistant coach and her former teammate at Dos Pueblos High School, was promoted to head coach this week by director of athletics Rocco Constantino. “I am honored and excited to lead SBCC’s softball team, Perry said. “I take so much pride in this program and will work extremely hard to elevate it to our goals on and off the field. Perry, an All-Western State Conference infielder for SBCC’s championship team of 2011, had served as Bosio’s assistant for the last two years. “I thought Jasmyne did a great job in her role with the team, Constantino said. “Coach Bosio spoke highly of her and I know our student-athletes enjoyed her as a coach. “I also know that she prioritizes the education of our students first and foremost, and that’s what is most important. Perry won All-Channel League honors at Dos Pueblos for three straight years, 2005 to 2007, when she was known by her maiden name of Jasmyne Holmes. She helped the Chargers win the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 championship as a sophomore, reach the semifinals as a junior and the quarterfinals as a senior. She returned to the diamond at SBCC in 2010, helping the Vaqueros compile a win-loss record of 23-14. She then led them to their first WSC title in 2011 with records of 16-2 in league and 31-7 overall. SBCC finished with rankings of No. 7 Southern California and No. 13 in the state. Perry continued her education at Cal State Monterey before earning her master’s degree at

Gonzaga University. “I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to mentor these student-athletes not just as softball players, she said. “I want to help prepare them for their next steps in life and become successful individuals within our community. She began her coaching career as an assistant at Dos Pueblos before Bosio, a 2008 graduate of DP, brought her onto her staff at SBCC in 2019. Costantino also recently hired new head coaches for the sports of men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track, and women’s golf. He’s still in search of a new men’s volleyball coach. Three of his recent hires were the promotions of assistant coaches. “We have been very fortunate to have highly skilled assistant coaches in many of our programs, he said. “I strongly believe in creating an atmosphere in our department where hard work and loyalty are rewarded. “It’s a real benefit to students when they are coached by someone who has already been successful in this environment. Jasmyne is a perfect example of that. She did well as a studentathlete here, graduated to a fouryear school and then moved on to receive her master’s degree. “Jasmyne then returned to SBCC and has been an excellent coach in our department right from the start. She’s a great role model for our student-athletes. Perry is the Vaqueros’ fourth head softball coach since the program was started 23 years ago. She follows Susan Bertelson (1997-98), Paula Congleton (19992018), and Bosio (2018-20). She and her husband, Matthew, are the parents of two children: Brooklyn, 2, and Ryelyn, six months.

The Goleta City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to go with the ‘traditional theme’ for its Train Depot Project.

DEPOT

Continued from Page A1 commodations made to one could be added to the other. “The internal layout and the arrangements of the space are basically predetermined and this is what we’re going to build around, and so we kept the internal functions as intact as possible, Mr. Verma said. City staff has also made it a big point to make sure the community has input on this project. The team hoped to present feedback from two community meetings by this presentation on Wednesday, but the pandemic forced the cancelation of those meetings. Instead, staff held virtual meetings and opened a survey for the public to provide feedback on May 26th. It closed on June 19th with

1,119 complete responses. The survey results showed that 53% of people liked the “traditionalâ€? theme the most. Additionally, 46% voted for a CafĂŠ with seating and/or vending machines to be added as an amenity. “A critical part of the Goleta Train Depot project has been, and continues to be, community engagement. City staff continues to receive phone calls and emails from the public expressing their preferences and desires for the project. The public’s input on the project is vital to ensuring we deliver a train depot that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also results in an iconic gateway structure that will stand the test of time,â€? Jaime Valdez, Principal Project Manager in the Neighborhood Services and Public Safety Department, said. email: jmercado@newspress.com

Gauchos go viral as they await their return to the basketball court By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

JaQuori McLaughlin watched from the seat of his trunks as the last shot of last season nestled softly through the basketball hoop at UCSB’s Thunderdome. He’d fallen backwards onto the court just as his fadeaway jumper beat both the buzzer and archrival Cal Poly, 69-67, to send the Gauchos to Anaheim with the No. 3 seed for the Big West Conference Tournament. The COVID-19 pandemic canceled the rest of the season just a few days later, however, and sent McLaughlin home to Gig Harbor, Wash. to wonder when he’d ever be back in Santa Barbara. “We still don’t know the date, McLaughlin said when contacted by phone this week, “but it’s supposed to be sometime this month. He hasn’t taken the last four months sitting down, however. McLaughlin, one of four seniors returning from a team that went 21-10, has taken the lead from afar in motivating his teammates. “We’ve been staying in touch with Zooms, texting and Facetiming each other, he said. “That’s the biggest thing for us, staying connected as a team, and especially in doing our individual workouts and teaching our culture to the new people coming in. “The big thing for us has been keeping each other on task and accountable, knowing what we’re all doing, and staying focused. And it hasn’t been just basketball. The killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis while in police custody last May stirred a soul-searching, team Zoom session about race relations. McLaughlin came up with the idea of producing a Black Lives Matter video to be shown on local television. Eleven of the Gauchos’ 13 scholarship players are black. “When we started talking about it, the guys all spoke about having had experiences of discrimination with the police, of having been subjected to racial slurs, McLaughlin said. “A good amount of our team has gone through that. “Coach wanted us to come up with ideas about how to get the word out and raise awareness in Santa Barbara. Most of us are at our homes right now, so we thought it would be good to make a video that could be shown to the community. Coach Joe Pasternack solicited contributions from Santa Barbara Police Chief Lori Luhnow, Milwaukee Bucks star Kyle Korver and Basketball Hall of Famer Jamaal Wilkes. The 30-second video has been airing for the last week on KEYT NewsChannel 3, KCOY NewsChannel 12 and KKFX Fox 11. “Jamaal’s son, Omar, played for me at Cal and Kyle trains here at P3 and at our gym, Pasternack said. “We really wanted to get them involved in the first phase of our project. “The next phase will be to get the police forces from UCSB, Goleta, and Santa Barbara to talk to the players. And the third phase will be to put something about Black Lives Matter on our uniforms. He’s unsure about when they’ll get to don their game uniforms. Although the Big West Conference moved all of its fall sports to 2021, it kept Nov. 10 as the starting date for men’s and women’s basketball. “We have a new league commissioner (Dan Butterly) who is really fired up about basketball and I think he’ll do everything in his power to get us a full season, Pasternack said. “But I do think it’s out of everybody’s control right now.

“Like people say, the virus is an invisible enemy. You just don’t know what’s going to happen in Santa Barbara, or statewide, or nationwide. He’s put together a nonleague schedule with home dates against the likes of Pepperdine, Texas-Arlington and Florida Gulf Coast. Road opponents include St. Mary’s and Loyola Marymount. But the NCAA is reportedly contemplating a late start to the basketball season with league-only schedules. “It’s crazy that they moved fall sports like that, but I think our season will happen, and I’m anxious to get started, McLaughlin said. “Definitely, this is going to be our best year yet. “We have some very special players on this team and some really good, new talent coming in, so we should be able to put it all together. McLaughlin, a 6-foot-4 guard, received AllBig West honorable mention last year after

averaging 13.4 points and 4.1 assists per game. He led the team in three-point accuracy at 40.7%. Amadou Sow, a 6-9 forward, earned All-Big West Second Team honors for the second year in a row after averaging14.1 points and 7.0 rebounds as a sophomore. Devearl Ramsey, who averaged 8.3 points and 2.5 assists as a junior point guard, is also back, as are seniors Robinson Idehen and Brandon Cyrus, and juniors SĂŠkou TourĂŠ and Jay Nagle. All that experience should help the Gauchos overcome the loss of its team workouts during the spring and summer because of the coronavirus, McLaughlin said. “It’s going to be huge for us having this many team leaders — senior leaders, and juniors who came in with us three years ago,â€? he said. Jakov Kukic, a 6-10 redshirt freshman, and several transfers add to UCSB’s firepower. Guard Ajare Sanni practiced with the team as a redshirt last year after starting as a freshman at the University of Pacific. Miles Norris, a 6-10 forward, won California JC Player of the Year honors as a sophomore at the City College of San Francisco after playing at Oregon during his freshman year. The Gauchos have also added three transfers. Destin Barnes, a 6-6 forward who led Jacksonville in scoring at 12.1 points per game last year, will be immediately eligible as a graduate student. Junior guard Calvin Wishart of Georgia Southern and sophomore guard Josh Pierre-Louis of Temple will sit out this year as redshirts. “I haven’t even met those three in person yet because of the pandemic,â€? Pasternack pointed out. “We recruited Destin, Calvin and Josh entirely by Zooms and Facetimes. They’ve never even been to Santa Barbara and they’re really itching to get here. “We’re still waiting for the university to give us the full go-ahead. Our goal is to get them all here by August.â€? The Zoom meetings about racial experiences did help bring the three newcomers into the fold, McLaughlin pointed out. “Our team is so close,â€? he said. “and it was good for the new guys to see that by how we are able to open up to each other so well.â€? UCSB was also strongly recommended by Jon Rothstein, the college basketball guru for CBS Sports, during a recent podcast. “Other than New York City, Santa Barbara is my favorite place in the greater United States,â€? Rothstein said. “If I were a mid-major player, I think UCSB would be the best place to go to school. It’s an unbelievable place, with its weather and architecture ‌ and McConnell’s Ice Cream. “Joe has also done an unbelievable job in his first couple of years of turning Santa Barbara into one of the top mid-majors on the West Coast. Now it’s just a matter of getting to the NCAA Tournament.â€? First things first, Pasternack said. “My message to the team in our Zoom today was the same as it was when I first got here, which is to just honor the process every single day,â€? he said. “We control what we can control and nothing else. Do our workouts and take care of our academics. “All the speculation is meaningless. Everything can change in an instant, just like last year’s Big West Tournament. Instead of speculating, let’s just get ourselves as ready as possible for when they do throw the ball back up into the air.â€? email: mpatton@newspress.com

Brett Bennett and Justin Sheparovich topped UCSB’s leaderboard the last time they played in a golf tournament, and now they’ve also gone to the head of the class. Bennett and Sheparovich were both named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for 2020. The Gauchos also earned All-Academic Team honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America. “This award represents the epitomĂŠ of being a Division I student-golfer,â€? coach Steve Lass said. “Playing well at the D-I level is extremely time consuming, and to combine that with outstanding grades at a prestigious academic university such as UCSB is quite an accomplishment.â€? Bennett finished sixth out of 66 golfers at the Sacramento Invitational in his last event before the 2020 season was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sheparovich placed 17th. The Gaucho pair also made last year’s All-America Scholar List. Twenty Gauchos have received the honor since 2000. To be eligible, a golfer must be a junior or senior academically, participate in at least half of his team’s events, maintain a stroke average of at least 76.0 and a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2, and display high moral character. The team award goes to golf programs which compile a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. UCSB is currently at 3.24. GAUCHO WOMEN HONORED UCSB women’s teams in volleyball and water polo have
