Santa Barbara Symphony plays live for the first time in six months By JOSH GREGA NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

COVID-19 has precluded the Santa Barbara Symphony from holding concerts this summer, but the group is making the best of the situation. The symphony hasn’t just been streaming content online, but has returned to the stage for live shows. This past weekend, the string quartet consisting of cellist Jonathan Flaksman, violist Diane Gilbert, and violinists Steve Zander and Yue Deng played in front of a limited audience at the Maravilla senior living community, an occasion that symphony interim CEO Kathryn Martin called “a beautiful day.” The quartet performed the music of Giacomo Puccini, George Gershwin, and the Beatles songs “Yesterday,” “Till There Was You,” and “When I’m 64.” The small show for the retirement home’s residents observed social distancing and each musician had their temperature checked prior to entering. According to Ms. Martin, it was the first live performance by Santa Barbara Symphony musicians before an in-person audience in about six months. Ms. Martin recalled seeing tears in the eyes of Maravilla residents, many who frequently attended symphony events prior to the pandemic, because it had just been so long since they heard live music. While Sunday’s performance “was not 1,500 people in the

Granada,” the reaction it produced in the audience, and the four musicians for that matter, brought the mission of the symphony into sharper focus. In the past, the symphony’s aim was closely tied to performing symphonic music in concert halls, but Ms. Martin said COVID19 restrictions have given the organization an opportunity to “reframe” itself. She said the mission at the heart of this reframing is to

ways of doing that, and what an opportunity,” Ms. Martin said. One way the symphony has brought music to the Santa Barbara community during the pandemic is its “Sundays with the Symphony” series, 30-minute streamed video episodes featuring archival live performances by symphony musicians and interviews with them. The next installment in the series will broadcast on the Please see symphony on A8

“connect with the community, to inspire, to educate, and to bring joy.” Always on the lookout for new ways of fulfilling this mission, the symphony accepted Maravilla’s invitation to perform a small concert for a small crowd of controlled size. “Part of our mission is to connect the music and the symphony musicians to the community. Residents of Santa Barbara now have new royal neighbors. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle secretly bought a private family home in the city in early July, according to the Daily Mail. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly moved from a mansion in Beverly Hills to Santa Barbara for a more quiet community to put down their roots to raise their 1-year-old son, Archie. While the precise location of the home is private, many speculate their home is in the Montecito area, which houses other celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey. The $18 million, 12-bedroom mansion in Los Angeles wasn’t

quite Prince Harry’s style, according to sources. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into their family home in July of this year,” a spokesperson for the couple confirmed. “They have settled into the quiet privacy of their community since their arrival and hope that this will be respected for their neighbors, as well as for them as a family.” Members of the royal family are no strangers to the Santa Barbara area. In 2011, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — Prince William and Catherine — visited the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club in Carpinteria, where the prince played in a charity match.

SANTA BARBARA — Starting this Saturday, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center will open its outdoor spaces to the public during weekends. According to a recent press release, the Sea Center’s Wet Deck will be open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., providing visitors the opportunity

to explore the marine life beneath Stearns Wharf and touch animals like swell sharks and sea stars in the Intertidal Wonders exhibit. No reservations are needed to attend. The Sea Center is located at 211 Stearns Wharf. — Josh Grega

The Dos Pueblos High School Foundation announced on Tuesday the completion of the Class of 2020 Resiliency Wall. With a plaque reading “Dedicated to the Class of 2020 who showed their resiliency and strength during the COVID-19 Pandemic. We are DP!â€? The new 264 sq. ft. mural features 466 student tiles, the school’s crest and homage to the “We are DPâ€? school slogan that reads “We are Resilient.â€? â€œThe Dos Pueblos community really stepped up to make this project a reality. We raised over $10,000 in less than two weeks. In addition, Tileco donated over 1,000 tiles, local artist Scott Boger painted the crest and lettering, Eliesa Bollinger, our high school ceramics teacher, spent the summer firing tiles, and local craftsmen and alumni, Clayte Robinson and Jorge Lorca, did the installation,â€? DPHS Foundation board member and parent of a 2020 graduate, Rechelle Ringer

said in a statement. “We had staff, parents, students and community members all working on different aspects and the end result is a lasting tribute to the class, the school and the community. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results.â€? After being given a small tile representing a flying graduation cap to design over Memorial Weekend, graduating seniors tried to capture a graduation tradition the Class of 2020 missed out on known as the mortarboard toss. Volunteers then painted names of those who couldn’t participate on the remaining caps to ensure those who couldn’t participate would be included. When it is safe, the Dos Pueblos High School Foundation has plans to do a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Class of 2020. Until then, the new Resiliency Wall can be viewed on the south wall of the Dos Pueblos High School gymnasium. â€œSeeing the beautiful mural come to fruition was a wonderfully emotional moment - symbolizing our school coming together to overcome the challenges of last

“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness. — William Arthur Ward

ARIES — A sum of money above and beyond your usual income could come your way. This could be a bonus, settlement, or even a gift of some kind. You could put it to work making changes in your home, perhaps repairs, perhaps remodeling or redecorating. This may seem like a daunting prospect, but you’ll have the energy and enthusiasm in addition to the money. Go to it. TAURUS — Some vast changes in your community could take place, Taurus. They’re positive, for the most part. Today the news should spread widely, and you could be hearing about it from all sides - local newspapers, neighbors, and conversations on the street. The level of excitement in your neighborhood is likely high, and you could get caught up in it. Be prepared for some surprises. GEMINI — Gemini, you might choose to do some volunteer work today or help a friend. This could make you aware of a talent you didn’t know you had. It could pave the way to more income. You could feel very proud of yourself and decide to do more with this ability, leading not only to financial benefits but also to increased selfesteem. Go for it. CANCER — Today you might wake up feeling that you can move mountains - and this might be exactly what you set out to do, figuratively speaking. Your physical energy, enthusiasm, and self-confidence are very high, Cancer. Your own and others’ creative projects could take up a lot of your time. If you’re coaching or helping others, however, avoid the temptation to take over the project. LEO — Today you could recapture the joy in life that you had as a child, Leo. You’re serious by nature, and feelings of joy are to be lived and treasured. You could be experiencing true flow. There might not be any real reason for it, so don’t try to find one. Your imagination and your relationships with others could be enhanced as a result. Relish the moment. VIRGO — Projects involving a group, perhaps your entire community, could take up a lot of your time, Virgo. Interesting news and stimulating conversations could come your way. Expect a lot of activity around you. You could be running around in the car, seeing people, getting errands taken care of. You could also find yourself changed somewhat - for +*#!2 +1$)"$ the better, of course.

LIBRA — New ideas for your career could be on your mind, Libra. You might be thinking not only about getting a new job but also entering an entirely new field. This could be a positive development, but don’t be too impulsive and leap without thinking. List your options, cross out the unworkable ones, and do some research on the rest. Even though you may feel some urgency, there is none. SCORPIO — Continued success and good luck should have you feeling charged up to move ahead with plans and ideas. Your energy and enthusiasm are high, Scorpio. You’re likely thinking about expanding your horizons, perhaps through travel or education. You should definitely give these serious thought. Plan carefully and take care not to move before the time is right. SAGITTARIUS — Don’t be surprised if sometime during the day you feel angry for no apparent reason, Sagittarius. It’s probably rooted in the past, from a situation that wasn’t resolved long ago. Take a good look at what’s going on today. Did some person or event awaken old traumas within you? Let them and the anger go. This can only benefit you and clear the way for more positive emotions. CAPRICORN — This is a great day to start new enterprises with others, Capricorn. Possible gatherings with friends or group activities could lead to ideas for new projects that fire your energy and enthusiasm. New immediate and long-term goals should be set. Some people may not be interested and could drop out, but don’t worry. Others who share your interests will quickly step in to take their places. AQUARIUS — Activities of some kind could put you in the public eye today, Aquarius. Some work you’ve done well might bring you richly deserved acknowledgement. Your energy and enthusiasm are already high, and you’re probably all fired up to do more. This could bring up thoughts of changes in your working situation. But don’t give notice right away. Some careful thought is needed. PISCES — Changes to your chosen field are indicated, Pisces. Ideas from other states or countries might fire your creativity. Your intellectual or artistic interests could take on a new dimension, expanding your horizons and opening new opportunities. You might toy with the idea of travel, perhaps to learn more about these matters. Possible formal education in new fields is also indicated.

Codeword is a fun game with simple rules, and a great way to test your knowledge of the English language. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

Smoked ham (deli-sliced) This tasty smoked ham is a fairly new farmers market find. Brought in by the Pork Palace in Santa Barbara County, it delivers a nice balance of smoky and salty notes. And it is ideal for use on a sandwich, diced and enjoyed over a salad, or rolled and simply eaten as a snack. Produced from the farm-raised heritage hogs, the animals are free of hormones and antibiotics and receive “a rich diet of spent brewer’s grain from local artisan breweries, excess vegetables from local farms, corn and alfalfa, all of which allow their meat to develop a richer flavor.” This ham is currently available at the weekly Saturday Santa Barbara, Sunday Camino Real, Tuesday Santa Barbara, Thursday Carpinteria (out this week only) and Friday Montecito farmers markets. Price is $11 per pound.

Gala apples Gala apples are always one of the first varieties of apples to emerge each year. The Rydell Family of Fair Hills Farm has started to harvest them fresh from the trees. Recognized by their pale yellow color splashed with a pink blush, this variety is very sweet. There is nothing that beats a fresh apple right off the tree! Currently available at the weekly Saturday Santa Barbara, Sunday Camino Real, Tuesday Santa Barbara, Wednesday Solvang and Thursday Carpinteria farmers’ markets. Price starts at $3.75 per pound.

O’Henry peaches I find the later season peach varieties the absolute best, and this O’Henry is at the top of my list These large peaches are incredibly flavorful and best when enjoyed in their firmripe stage. Perfect to eat on the go, add to a fruit salad, or to incorporate into your baked goods, such as pies, crisps and cobblers. These peaches are grown, harvested and sold by Regier Family Farm, Burkdoll Farm and Galpin Family Farm. They’re currently available at all weekly Santa Barbara certified farmers markets while in season. Price averages about $3.75 per pound with discounts on larger purchases. CSB’s Schmidt Environmental Solutions Fellows program has received an additional two years of funding that will support 23 students to engineer new ways to change the world. The Schmidt Environmental Solutions Fellows program assists undergraduate and graduate students who use science to develop new techniques and solutions to the world’s most urgent environmental problems. It was founded in 2019 with the support of The Schmidt Family Foundation. Douglas McCauley, an associate professor in UCSB’s Marine Science Institute, oversees the fellowship program. Gaucho tennis doubles-up with ITA’s Scholar-Athlete Award By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

UCSB tennis players Joseph Rotheram and Alex Domingues Soto, doubles partners in 2019, were also at the head of the class as Global Studies majors. They were each named to receive Scholar-Athlete Awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association after recording gradepoint averages above 3.5 during the 2019-20 academic year. “Joseph and Alex epitomize what it is to be a student-athlete at a great academic institution such as UC Santa Barbara, coach Marty Davis said. “Their effort in the classroom and on the courts is exceptional. They went 9-5 as a doubles team in 2019, playing mostly at the No. 3 position. Rotheram, a junior from Manhattan Beach, moved up to No. 1 doubles this spring. He also played No. 4 singles. Soto, a native of Madrid, Spain, completed his Gaucho career last spring at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles.

WESTMONT ADDS SWIMMER Kassandra Gregory, a freshman swimmer last spring at Soka University, announced that she is transferring to Westmont College next season. Warriors coach Jill Jones Lin previously coached Gregory when she was a youth swimmer in the Bay Area. “Kassy is a fierce competitor and is an incredible teammate, Jones Lin said. “I’m thrilled to coach her and watch her improve over the next three years. Gregory qualified for the NAIA National Championships last season in both the 200- and 500yard freestyles. She also made it to nationals in five relay events (the 200, 400 and 800 free, and the 200 and 400 medley). “I’m looking forward to joining the supportive community of swimmers that coach Jones Lin has cultivated, Gregory said. “The team will now begin its second year on campus and there’s already an established camaraderie, commitment to

excellence and support among my fellow team members. She received honorable mention as a Scholar All-American last year from the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association. She plans to major in kinesiology while pursuing a pre-med education, “Westmont offers a unique balance between academics, athletics and faith, which is important to me, Gregory said. “As an incoming sophomore, I wanted to continue my college studies in a supportive and culturally diverse environment with like-minded students. “I especially value the small class sizes and the opportunity to engage one-on-one with my professors. And of course, the opportunity to train under coach Jones Lin and swim with a great team is the icing on the cake. Gregory is the seventh studentathlete to commit to Westmont’s second-ever recruiting class in women’s swimming. email: mpatton@newspress.com

She is also survived by her brother, Mike Dow and his family; and her sister, Barbara (Dow) Carras and her family. Mary Lloyd, known to all as Lloyd, was a passionate and outspoken young person. She attended the Leelanau School in Michigan and then went on to Connecticut College for her freshman year. She began dating Ken Mills, who was a senior at Yale University, and there was no turning back. After her sophomore year of college, she married Ken and they moved to Kassel, Germany while he was serving in the U.S. Army. They loved their time in Germany and were able to take advantage of weekends away for visits to other areas of Europe. Lloyd and Ken returned to Michigan after their time in Germany. After ten years in Pasadena, Lloyd, Ken, and their now three children moved to Solvang, California in June of 1972. They wanted a change of pace for their family and to spend more time outdoors. Lloyd fell in love with the Santa Ynez Valley and became even more passionate about spending time outside and developing her hiking skills. In 1978 with support from some very good friends, she led the effort to found the Santa Ynez Valley Women Hikers (SYVWH). She created this group, which still exists today and is well-regarded in the Santa Barbara County area, as a way to develop new friendships, nurture a strong feeling of camaraderie between members, explore new areas of the county’s many trails, all while staying in shape and spending time in the open air. This group of women became an important core of Lloyd’s social group, enlarging to include a book club, knitting and sewing circles, a bridge club, social events (men included here), and travel to other places to hike, in the U.S. and Europe. In the late 1980s, Lloyd and Ken began to increase their travel and started taking hiking trips to the mountains of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In the mid-1990’s they decided to go out on their own and lead organized trips of friends and other hikers. Lloyd never missed a summer going to her beloved mountains until this year when it became impossible to travel. For many years from the 1960s-1980s, Lloyd and Ken were active members in the Christian Science Church in Pasadena and Ballard, and later the Unity Church in Santa Barbara. They were involved as leaders and supporters and made many friends both in Pasadena and Santa Barbara.
