For whom the bell tolls Bell rung 34 times to honor lives lost in Conception boat fire
By GRAYCE MCCORMICK NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
The sun broke through the clouds for just a moment at 7 on Wednesday morning. At the end of the Breakwater of the Santa Barbara Harbor, 15 to 20 family and community members gathered in the morning gloom to have first looks at the new plaque commemorating the 34 souls lost in the Conception fire. The plaque reads, “In honor of those who lost their lives September 2, 2019 on board the Conception at Platt’s Harbor, Santa Cruz Island.” The light green plaque placed on a large rock then lists each of the victim’s names. Following the unveiling, a bell was rung 34 times — for each life lost. Despite the chilly ocean breeze, attendees embraced one another, reflected at the photo memorial and gazed out at the blue waves that their lost family members and friends loved so much. James Adamic lost three family members in the tragedy: his sister, Diana Adamic, her husband, Steve Salika and their daughter, Tia Adamic-Salika. They were celebrating Tia’s 17th birthday when the boat went up in flames. “They were all there together. They all wanted to go on a trip together. They all perished together,” he told the News-Press. “It’s a good way to keep their memories alive for everybody, and it’s a nice way of being recognized for our loss. It’s very touching.” The memorial, covered in bright flowers, candles, dolphin balloons and personal valuables, displayed photos of the victims and various messages alongside them. Swim fins, hats, leis and goggles were draped over the shrine, as attendees clutched the framed memories of their loved ones. “This is such an incredibly important day to remember,” Suzanne Grimmesey, from the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness, told the News-Press. “We remember all the lives that were lost, and it will be permanently imprinted in many people’s minds. Green-shirted staff members wave a line of 10 customers through the sliding doors of Sprouts, a grocery store specializing in health foods. Inside, employees wearing gloves arrange produce into pyramid-like displays. Tags labeled “plant-based” and “gluten-free” flutter as carts zip pass. Sprouts opened its newest location at 29 S. Milpas St. Wednesday, led by interim store
manager Eric Sustin. He saw people peering through the windows prior to opening, and he met a mother and daughter that planned ahead to shop on the opening day. “It’s a big deal to have Sprouts around here,” customer and local resident Jim Head said. He usually shops for fresh foods, but the only other healthy grocery store nearby is Trader Joe’s. But he’s tired of shopping there. Mr. Sustin hopes the store can provide a healthy option for residents. Please see Sprouts on A2

Santa Barbara just recently got through a heatwave, but another hot spell is on the horizon. The incoming heatwave means that this summer’s hottest temperatures are arriving a bit later than usual, Kathy Hoxsie, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Oxnard, told the News-Press. “What is a little bit different this summer is that we would statistically see the hottest temperatures late July or early August, she said. The city of Santa Barbara is forecasted to experience a high temperature of 90 degrees Friday. This will climb to between 92 and 94 degrees on Saturday, with Sunday reaching 97 degrees, the apex of the heatwave. The heatwave is expected to continue into early next week, with high temperatures on Monday and Tuesday in Santa Barbara reaching 94 and 91 degrees, respectively. It is predicted to cease on Wednesday, with high temperatures only reaching low 80s. Temperatures at Santa Barbara Municipal Airport will likely be slightly cooler than in the city, with Saturday’s high temperature reaching 86 degrees, Sunday’s 93 degrees, and Monday’s 89 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Ms. Hoxsie said there is a possible chance that airport temperatures could actually get a few degrees hotter, even approaching daily record temperatures of 97 and 93 degrees on Sunday and Monday, respectively. However, airport highs probably won’t come anywhere near the all-time September record of 104 degrees. As per usual with heatwaves, inland areas, such as the Santa Ynez Valley, are forecast to get considerably hotter than coastal areas. The National Weather Service predicts that the Santa Ynez Valley will hit triple digit high temperatures of 107 degrees on Friday, 110 on Saturday, 114 on Sunday, 113 on Monday, and 107 on Tuesday. The Santa Ynez Valley will fall back into the double digits again on Wednesday, with a high temperature of 94 degrees. Santa Maria is forecast to be somewhat cooler than Santa Barbara throughout the heatwave, with Sunday’s high temperature at 96 degrees, just under the peak temperature predicted for Santa Barbara. The rest of its high temperatures over the next several days are 79 degrees on Friday, 87 on Saturday, 92 on Monday, and 86 on Tuesday.

MONTECITO — A Montecito man has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for orchestrating a years-long scheme that defrauded investors out of more than $3.4 million, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California. Efstratios “Elias Argyropoulos, 73, was sentenced Aug. 31 by U.S. District Judge George H. Wu, who ordered him to pay more than $3.4 million in restitution to his victims. He previously pleaded guilty in June 2019 to one count of wire fraud, authorities said. Mr. Argyropoulos issued false promises to investors and used their money to purchase shares of Facebook and Twitter prior to the companies’ initial public offerings. From October 2010 to October 2015, Mr. Argyropoulos was the president and sole shareholder of Prima Ventures Corp., a Santa Barbara-based financial services firm. He represented to investors that he had access to “amazing investment opportunities that would provide a high rate of return on any money invested, authorities said. He told investigators that he and Prima Ventures were licensed brokers, when in actuality neither were licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission or any other regulatory authority to sell securities. Rather than purchasing stocks, Mr. Argyropoulos diverted the investor funds for other uses, such as day-trading in stocks unrelated to the promised investments, as well as personal expenses such as gambling, cars, insurance bills, travel and legal expenses incurred out of an investigation into his activities by the SEC. He admitted to violating a January 2015 court order in a lawsuit brought by the SEC, which was based on the fraudulent Facebook and Twitter scheme.
Royce Lewellen dies at 89 Royce Lewellen, a retired Santa Barbara County Superior Judge and co-founder of Lucas & Lewellen Estate Vineyards, died Tuesday at the age of 89. Born in St. Louis, Mo, Mr. Lewellen met Louis Lucas in 1975 through the Santa Maria Wine & Food Society. Over the next 25 years, the Lucas and Lewellen
The injunction prevented him from selling fraudulent investments and acting as an unlicensed broker, officials said. In total, he cheated 130 victims out of more than $3.4 million. The matter was investigated by the FBI, while the SEC provided substantial assistance. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Paetty of the Major Frauds Section. — Mitchell White
Prescribed burn planned today ISLA VISTA — A prescribed burn will take place today at the UCSB Lagoon near Campus Point, according to officials. The burn will begin late this morning and conclude by 4 p.m. The actual burning of the halfacre of grassland, coastal sage and bluff scrub is expected to last less than one hour, according to the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District. The prescribed burn is part of an ongoing ecological management effort to control nonnative grasses and establish native vegetation. The burn will be conducted when meteorological conditions are highly favorable to direct smoke away from populated areas, officials said. The burn is planned and coordinated by the Santa Barbara County Fire Department with SBCAPCD and other agencies. Those who smell smoke should take precautions and use common sense to reduce any harmful health effects by limiting outdoor activities. If you are sensitive to smoke, consider temporarily relocating and closing all doors and windows during the burn. A portable air monitor will be set up in the area to monitor air quality conditions. Data will be available on the APCD’s website, www.ourair.org/todays-airquality/.
Restraining order issued against fitness center BUELLTON — A temporary restraining order has been issued against All Sport Fitness Center in Buellton, requiring it to cease indoor operations pursuant to state and local public health orders. Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley made the announcement Tuesday following an Aug. 31 hearing, when Superior Court Judge Jed Beebe issued the restraining order. All Sport continued operating indoors after state and local government issued orders requiring all gyms and fitness centers in counties severely impacted by the COVID19 pandemic to cease indoor operations. Despite warnings from the city of Buellton’s code inspector and the District Attorney’s Office, the gym failed to comply with orders. The Consumer Protection Unit of the District Attorney’s Office previously filed a civil complaint against All Sport, alleging a violation of the state’s Unfair Competition Law. The restraining order remains valid until Sept. 11, when Judge Beebe will determine whether a preliminary injunction is appropriate to prevent All Sport from violating the public health orders. “The District Attorney’s Office remains committed to protecting public health and safety by enforcing state and local public health orders. Compliance with these orders is essential to combatting COVID-19 in Santa Barbara County, Ms. Dudley said in a statement.

“People want to make a change, so they come to us, he said. Studies across the United States show a relationship between income level and racial characteristics of a community and lower access to healthy foods, according to a September 2012 review in the American Journal of Public Health. It also shows that diabetes disproportionally affects communities of color. The median income of the Census tract surrounding Sprouts is $64,763. This is around $10,000 under the city’s median income, according to the United States Census Bureau website. The tract is also 65.9% Hispanic or Latino and 4.5% black, almost double the percentages of the city. Mr. Sustin said Sprouts is dedicated to the community, a promise the store backs up with food bank donations. Every day, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County picks up food the store didn’t sell — starting today, the second day the store is open. The store employs 110 people from across the county. Mr. Sustin said the team met at the start of business on Wednesday, and he could tell his employees were smiling even through the masks. “It’s a real challenge opening a store during a pandemic, he said. “But everybody’s challenged the same, and it brought us together. Two staff members hand dethorned, white roses to customers as they leave the store. Revolution in evolution UCSB discovers gene critical to floral nectar spurs
Cameo apples Possessing a stunning red streaky skin, this variety is thought to be a cross between the red delicious and golden delicious varieties. Very crisp and firm, cameo apples deliver a nice sweet finish and pleasing amount of juice with every bite. Perfect for slicing, eating as it comes, or enjoying in a seasonal salad as in this week’s Fix on A6. The firm texture also less well to pies, crisps and cobblers. Grown and harvested by the Rydell Family of Fair Hills Farm out of Paso Robles, this seasonal favorite is currently being harvested right off the trees and brought fresh to the Saturday Santa Barbara, Sunday Camino Real, Tuesday Santa Barbara, Wednesday Solvang and Thursday Carpinteria farmers markets. Make sure to grab some of their farm’s new batch apple cider as well. It’s exceptional! Cameo apples are priced at $3.50 per pound.

Biologists discovered a new gene in floral nectar spurs, a key innovation in evolution that can lead scientists to new insights.
Organic galia melons I found these two varieties of beautiful Galia style melons this week from Tom Shepherd’s Farm at both the Saturday and Tuesday Santa Barbara farmers’ markets. When inquiring about the different options, I was told that the striped variety was referred to as an “ogen” melon and the one more reminiscent of a cantaloupe’s exterior was an “arava” melon. Both possess a vibrant green flesh and are quite sweet. The flesh is soft and delectable, perfect for a chilled melon sound, or simply eating right out of the skin, seeds discarded of course. Certified organic, these melons cost $1 per pound.
Organic salt and pepper cucumbers I’m pretty sure you have never seen this variety at any of your local grocery stores, or even specialty food stores. Possessing a pale yellow skin and cream colored flesh, this relatively smaller variety is both sweet and crisp. The bumpy outer skin, similar to that of a pickling cucumber, is usually peeled before adding to a salad, although I often find myself enjoying them right out of the refrigerator, whole as they come. They are a great option for homemade pickles, resulting in a fun yellow color once done. The color really pops when pickling and adding a little turmeric. Grown organically by Jacob Grant of Roots Farm in Los Olivos, they can be found at the Saturday Santa Barbara, Tuesday Santa Barbara and Wednesday Solvang farmers markets. Price is $3 per pound. Floral nectar spurs increase the distance between the floral reward and the reproductive parts of the flower, leading to greater biodiversity.
By GRAYCE MCCORMICK NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
Biologists discovered a new gene that will lead them to new insights on evolution. This specific discovery deals with evolution in plants: floral nectar spurs. These small tubes increase the distance between the floral reward and the reproductive parts of the flower, leading to greater biodiversity. Biologists believe this is a “key innovation” in causing a greater number of species to evolve. Using a combination of genetic mapping, gene expression analyses and functional assays, UCSB professor Scott Hodges and his research associate, Evangeline Ballerini, along with their coauthors, identified a gene critical to the development of these nectar spurs. This is among the first key innovations for which a critical development gene has been identified, something that will help scientists understand how organisms achieve different shapes and how those shapes evolve. “We really want to understand how form is controlled and how that’s achieved,” Dr. Hodges told the News-Press. “This is one example of a really striking change in shape, so understanding Please see GENES on A6

One way to measure success

UCSB professor Scott Hodges was part of the team that discovered this gene. He said this discovery will be able to inform scientists how animals and plants develop key innovations in evolution.
Research aims to determine how plants make different shapes genes
Nectar spurs are a defining feature of the columbine genus Aquilegia, and that lineage has experienced a “relatively recent and rapid radiation” of five to seven million years. Dr. Hodges said this means scientists can do a lot of genetics on them.
Continued from Page A3 how that gene works will tell us a lot about how morphology is achieved in general.” Dr. Hodges’s areas of research include botany, ecology, evolution, evolutionary ecology, evolutionary genetics, macroevolution and organismal biology. The goal of his research is to explain the genetic basis of adaptation and speciation. “There are a number of morphological traits in particular that scientists have associated with increases in biodiversity,” he said. “What we wanted to know was more about how they evolved. How do you go from not having that key innovation to having it? What kinds of things are involved?” The researchers named the gene POPOVICH, after Gregg Popovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs basketball team. “Before, we had no idea about this kind of developmental process. Once we have one gene, that gene is a master regulator. It’s a gene that controls whether
other genes are turned on or off,” Dr. Hodges said. “Gregg Popovich oversees the team, and that’s kind of what this gene does. It controls what a whole bunch of different players are doing in the genome.” He compared the nectar spurs to wings, in that each group of animals that evolved them has spun off into many different species. However, he said wings are too challenging to study because of how old they are. “Wings evolved so long ago that it’s hard to find specific genes that were critical for evolution,” Dr. Hodges said. However, nectar spurs are a defining feature of the columbine genus Aquilegia, and that lineage
has experienced a “relatively recent and rapid radiation” of five to seven million years. Dr. Hodges said this means scientists can do a lot of genetics on them. “What we’d really like to know is how plants achieve making different shapes,” Dr. Hodges said. “We may want to breed plants that do a certain thing or make a certain shape. It’s basic science. We want to know how the world works.” Dr. Hodges and his team’s study can be found in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which was first published Aug. 26. email: gmccormick@newspress.com
Fix of the Week
farmers market Sam Edelman
I
often come home from a farmers’ market, arms loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables, without any real concrete plan on what I will be preparing throughout the week. Surely, some of the fresh fruit will be consumed as it comes, enjoyed right out of the fruit bowl or crisper, and the lettuce inevitably making its way into a salad. As for the bulk of the seasonal goods — whether it’s the fresh basil, obscure cucumber and melon varieties, fresh summer corn, grapes, peppers and tomatoes — much of those have yet to be determined. I find that when purchasing fresh fruits and veggies within their seasonal windows, there is a very high probability you will find many of their flavor and texture profiles to be quite complimentary of one another. As we start to merge the summer and fall bounties, the selections have reached peak diversity. This week I decided to incorporate all three of my weekly Picks of the Week, along with some other seasonal ingredients into a single dish. This can be served as a side salad or main course, and enjoyed really any meal of the day. If you don’t have these specific varieties of fruits or vegetables, you can easily substitute comparable options.

Summer-Fall Salad
2 tablespoons good quality balsamic vinegar (could also use rice vinegar) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard ½ red onion, sliced thin 1 Camino Apple, core discarded and sliced ½ of a galia melon 2 salt and pepper cucumbers, peeled and sliced 1 ear corn, cooked (grilled preferred), kernels removed from cob and cob discarded 1 small jalapeño pepper (optional) sliced into very thin rounds into ½ cup fresh herbs (I combined basil, mint and cilantro, can use any one of combination of all 3) ½ cup crumbled feta cheese or chèvre In a mixing bowl, whisk together balsamic, olive oil and Dijon. Then mix in red onion and let sit at room temperature while you prepare to eat the ingredients. In a salad bowl or deep serving platter, gently toss together apple, melon, cucumber, corn and jalapeño. Then gently work in the fresh herbs. Top with onion mixture and gently toss, then finish by topping with feta cheese. Yield: Makes 4 side or 2 large salads.

If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

SBCC opens football drills; NCAA considers Nov. for hoops By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER
School is back at session in an online setting at two of Santa Barbara’s three colleges, and UCSB will make it a triple play starting Sept. 27. But sports are still a muddled matter at each of the campuses. Santa Barbara City College, which started classes on Aug. 24, stepped gingerly into its football cleats for fall conditioning on Monday. “We’re in a two-week window where we’re under strict guidelines, director of athletes Rocco Constantino said. “We can’t use equipment and there are other rules, but at least we’re out there doing something. “On Sept. 14, we will reassess and maybe some restrictions can be lifted. Constantino said “about half of SBCC’s athletic teams have started working out under COVID19 restrictions mandated by the Santa Barbara County Health Department. The California Community College Athletic Association moved all of its fall sports competition to the spring semester of 2021. Football can’t begin official practice until Jan. 18. Craig Moropoulos, who is entering his 14th year as SBCC’s head football coach and his 36th in coaching, is still not sure when the Vaqueros will play their first game. “They’re limiting it to 70% of a normal season, which is seven
games plus a scrimmage, he said. “But we’re going to try to keep the conference viable. Moropoulos separated his athletes into several physical education classes this week “to keep the groups small. “There’s a lot of protocol that we have to follow, like wearing masks and staying apart, but it is so good to be out on the field again, and seeing the guys, and talking to the guys, he said. “I’m really happy and excited to be actually in the stadium and coaching. “We owe so much to our president (Utpal Goswami) for the support we’ve received, and our department has done a fantastic job of putting a great plan into place. Kathy O’Connor (department chair for health education) has been instrumental in all of this. Moropoulos said he got “a decent turnout on Monday after “between 150-200 recruits took part in a virtual tour of SBCC’s campus throughout the summer. “Monday was the first day that we were able to see some of these kids in person, he said. Online instruction, however, has complicated the sports situations at both UCSB and Westmont College since many of their athletes are housed on campus. Although both of their conferences moved their fall schedules to 2021, they’re still planning on a November start for basketball. “We are working out the housing component now, UCSB director of athletics John McCutcheon
VIC NEUMANN / NEWS-PRESS
Craig Moropoulos, middle, who is entering his 14th season as SBCC’s football coach, is shown drilling the Vaqueros before the 2018 season. Although their next season won’t start until at least January, Moropoulos opened conditioning workouts on Monday.
said. “Bottom line, I don’t think this will impact the basketball season. The real question on the basketball season is if the NCAA membership decides to delay the start date from Nov. 11, which I think is likely. “Different models are under consideration and I believe we will get some direction by midSeptember. The NCAA Division I Council is
expected to consider the issue on Sept. 16. Its oversight committees for both men’s and women’s basketball jointly proposed a two-week delay to the start of the season, recommending that it now begin on Nov. 25 — the day before Thanksgiving. CBS Sports reported that the Pac-12 Conference, which announced on Aug. 11 that it would not allow basketball

competition until January, is now proposing a Dec. 4 starting date. An opening night of Nov. 25, combined with the usual 42 days of preseason practice, would delay the start of UCSB basketball workouts until Oct. 14. The Gaucho men would lose four home games with the newly proposed starting date: Menlo on Nov. 11, Idaho State on Nov. 15, UC Santa Cruz on Nov. 18, and
Pepperdine on Nov. 22. The trimmed-down schedule would have UCSB open at home against Florida A&M on Nov. 27, Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 29, Portland State on Dec. 3, and Texas Arlington on Dec. 7. The Gauchos’ first road games would be at Loyola Marymount on Dec. 12 and Saint Mary’s on Dec. 19. They would play one more home contest against Alcorn State on Dec. 22 before opening Big West Conference play at home on New Year’s Eve against UC San Diego, which will be making its league debut. UCSB has not yet released its women’s basketball schedule. Westmont began online instruction on Monday but hopes to move students back on campus by the weekend of Sept. 26-27. The Warriors’ first men’s basketball game was originally set for Nov. 3 at home against West Coast Baptist. Their women’s team hasn’t yet confirmed its nonconference schedule, although it was to play a home doubleheader with the men while opening Golden State Athletic Conference play against Arizona Christian on Nov. 20 and Ottawa, Ariz. on Nov. 21. “The reality is that all these dates are subject to the limitations of state and county health regulations, which will need to be lifted before we can resume practice, let alone games, school spokesperson Ron Smith said. email: mpatton@newspress.com

The Conception fire was the largest loss of life in a single incident in Santa Barbara County history, the worst maritime disaster in California since 1865 and the deadliest in the United States since 1989. In a commemoration video, Sheriff Bill Brown said the victims of the tragedy came from a “cross-section of humanity, people of different races, origins, professions and more. LOPEZ, Norma May (Mora) June 19, 1935-August 22, 2020
Beloved daughter, sister, auntie, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Our mother was born June 19, 1935 to Robert and Camille (Escobar) Mora (predeceased) of Santa Barbara. She was the eldest of five children. Norma went to Lincoln Elementary, Santa Barbara Jr and Senior High schools where art was a favorite subject. While still in high school, an art assignment gave Norma the opportunity and honor to have one of her art pieces, her rendition of the Mona Lisa, hang in the City School’s Superindent’s office for a number of years. She was a counter girl at Woolworth’s on the corner of State and Anapamu St. where she learned from a customer and retired waitress, how to pour the ‘perfect’ cup of coffee. On February 11, 1956 she married Arthur Lopez, who predeceased her in 2014, son of Reynaldo and Carmen (Troncoso) Lopez (predeceased). Arthur and Norma raised a family of five, beginning on Canon Perdido St and ending on Flora Vista Drive on the Mesa. Family was Norma’s sole focus in life. Sacrifice and service for the well-being of her loved ones was always in her heart and actions. Our mother made sure that we didn’t leave the house wearing one blue sock and one black sock at the same time, that our hair was combed and homework in hand. As our family grew up, she reminded us of our manners (often), and that the good we did for others, would return to us someday. Most importantly, that God... was always with us. Norma loved to entertain. She would rise early on the day of an event and cook up a storm. A delightful hostess and graceful dancer on the dance floor, our mother would enjoy gatherings at our house with all the gusto her Life offered. Her graciousness and genuine giving spirit was always recognized by family and friends. And she loved to sing. When the youngest of our family began school, Norma volunteered as a teacher’s helper at Monroe Elementary and soon, she became a sought-after teaching assistant for 2nd and third grades, PTA President, campus advisor and friend. Norma loved people. She worked in retail stores over the years, Thrifty’s and Rite-aid the longest. She also worked for Dr. Campbell on State Street. Norma loved road trips, though she rarely left her beloved home state of California. Her adventurous spirit took her to to Florida, Mexico and Baja California. She loved day trips to Cambria, Ojai and San Francisco. Stories were a favorite past time. She loved getting lost in a good mystery and watching movies from the 1930’s to present. She was an excellent Grandmother and GreatGrandmother. She could calm the crankiest baby and loved to sing her Grandchildren to sleep. Norma was a very unique and genuine woman. Though she was not perfect and fraught with all that there was to be human, but she was perfectly imperfect as our sister, our mother, and our friend. She was perfectly, Norma. God bless you, Momma, Your quick wit and presence will be missed. Norma is survived by her children, Loretta Lopez (Stevan), Lisa Marie Cunningham (Patrick), Arthur David, Reynaldo (Iris), and Carmelita Lopez Pinedo (Rudy); 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grand children; Sisters Lorraine and Virginia, Brothers, Robert Jr (Sonny), Richard and Raymond. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 21 East Sola Street Santa Barbara, CA. 93101 @10am September 4th. Outside in the grassy area.
CRIBBS, Shirley Gwynneth Franklyn
Shirley Gwynneth Franklyn Cribbs passed away on July 22nd after a prolonged struggle with Parkinson’s/Lewy Body Dementia. Shirley was born in London, England, October 11, 1934. She moved to Chicago Illinois in 1961 where she met her future husband, Michael Cribbs. They were married in 1966 and enjoyed a loving relationship for over 54 years. Shirley had a great passion for classical music and served on the auxiliary board of the Lake Forest Symphony for a number of years. Shirley and Michael moved to Santa Barbara in 1990. She was an active member on the women’s board of Music Academy of the West. For 14 years Shirley co-chaired the Compeer Program and formed many long-lasting friendships with the students she helped at the Academy. Shirley and Michael were avid travelers visiting over 40 countries on six continents. Shirley was an avid tennis player and golfer who enjoyed golfing at the Montecito Country Club. Shirley is survived by her husband; her daughter, Andrea, and her children, Dylan and Lorelei; and her son, Gavin, and his sons Cameron and Evan. Because of the sudden nature of her passing combined with the COVID virus, there will be no funeral service. Donations to the Music Academy of the West would be welcome in lieu of cards or flowers. Shirley had a huge heart and loving warmth. She will be missed by all who knew her.
