Fiesta 2020 from home El Presidente determined to bring Fiesta to the homes of SB residents NEWS-PRESS CORRESPONDENT

From frequenting the pancake breakfasts and romping around the children’s parade to getting asked to join the board and becoming El Presidente, Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara has always been a part of Erik Davis’s life. Moving to Santa Barbara at the age of six, his sister was a flower girl back in the 1970s and his dad was the president of the Kiwanis Club. He grew up celebrating at Old Spanish Days Fiesta often. Mr. Davis attended Foothill Elementary School, San Marcos High School and studied political science and broadcast journalism at San Diego State University. He returned to the city in 2000, and he and his wife bonded over the Fiesta events, ensuring they attended at least two events a year. The couple was asked to join the board of directors in 2010, and Mr. Davis worked his way through the organization, serving as Primer Vice Presidente, Segundo Vice Presidente, the Division Chief of External Relations and Education, Public Relations Chair, Media Outreach and History Committees. In addition, he has helped with fundraising, Fiesta Pequeña, El Desfile Historico, parade marshals and other key committees. “It goes way back with me,” Mr. Davis told the News-Press. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s a labor of love. Fiesta is so special to this community and it means so much.” The 96-year-old tradition of live concerts, swirling dancers and joyous celebration was affected by COVID-19 like all other festivals. The board announced they will “reimagine” Old Spanish Days Fiesta 2020 by holding its signature events virtually and on television. They have already kicked off “Fiesta music and dance Fridays,” where live performances can be live-streamed on Fiesta’s website. The lineup includes Spencer the Gardener, False Puppet, King Bee and Mezcal Martini. In addition, other traditions were still televised, such as the announcements of Saint Barbara, Fiesta spirits and the audition for Fiesta spirits. “People will enjoy the Fiesta music and dance and history Please see FIESTA on A8

cases up to 26. As of now, there are 389 active cases of COVID-19 in Santa Barbara County. Per Governor Gavin Newsom’s order, many public gatherings and spaces including bars and beaches across the state were closed over the weekend because of COVID-19, and will remain closed. According to the California Department of Public Health’s website, “On July 5, California reported 5,699 new cases of COVID-19. The state now has a total of 271,684 positive cases, which includes a backlog of cases received from Los Angeles County – 3,187 positive cases from July 4 and 2,643 positive cases from July 3. There have been a total of 6,337 deaths in the state.” Please see covid on A2

Local resident Marie Dorothy Powell was surprised at how many fireworks she heard and saw on July 4th. “They were wonderful… I found out the next day they weren’t sanctioned, but I thought it was wonderful,” she said.

It’s hard to find someone who hasn’t had an event they had planned for 2020 derailed because of COVID-19, and July 4th activities turned out to be no exception. For several individuals who spoke to the News-Press on State Street Monday afternoon, parties and annual trips were among the traditional Independence Day events that had to be cancelled. Though their original plans for the holiday couldn’t happen this past weekend, most individuals interviewed managed to find some alternative way of celebrating America’s founding. Santa Barbara resident Summer Kirkpatrick initially expected to spend her Fourth of July working a shift at Sandbar, but upon getting the day off, she spent Saturday with a small group of friends for a backyard cookout. The small hangout came about because she and her friends “didn’t have plans” to do anything else locally since Santa Barbara County beaches were ordered to close by the Public Health Department on July 3. Ms. Kirkpatrick said she really wanted to spend Independence

Day on the beach because the pandemic precluded her usual plan --- a trip back to her home state of Colorado. “Usually around Fourth of July, I’m in Colorado and I go to a Red Rocks concert every Fourth of July, and that did not happen this year of course, because the amphitheater is closed. I wanted to spend it on the beach because I actually had never done that before either, and then they closed the beaches. Maybe next year,” she said. Despite restrictions, some out-of-towners did decide to stop by Santa Barbara over Independence Day weekend. Contra Costa County resident Josh Mendez brought his family to Santa Barbara because “the weather is beautiful” and because his family was “tired of being at home.” Normally, he, his wife, and his two kids stay home to watch the fireworks in San Francisco, but this year the fireworks display was cancelled. After spending the weekend walking around State Street and along the beach, Mr. Mendez said his family’s first visit to Santa Barbara didn’t disappoint. “It’s beautiful, we love it here. ouses with porches are a rarity in Santa Barbara, but that isn’t stopping locals from posing for “Porch Portraits,” a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara County. Among them are Harry and Gail Gelles, the Tynes Family, Nancy Locke and Meredith Baxter and four groups who preferred to remain anonymous. Donating their time and talents as photographers are Christian Seaton, Ken Pfeiffer, Michael Elkington, Lise Penny Sherratt and Lindsay Skutch. “When we had to cancel our planned events, especially our gala in September, because of the pandemic, we needed to find a new strategy to raise funds. We heard about a photographer on the East Coast who was taking portraits of people on their porches while keeping social distance,” said Jessica Wishan, CEO of Habitat. Please see PORTRAITS on A4

Things have changed — and this is just the beginning

eople use the TVinspired phrase “the new normal like we will all just naturally adapt to whatever changes are coming, like changing the channel. I don’t like being the negative one (ever), but I don’t think people shift that easily. Here are some things that could hold some of us back from reengaging in the world. And I’m totally willing to be wrong. If you are older or immunecompromised, you are probably frightened to go out. It’s not agoraphobia — it’s common sense. I just turned 67 (hard to believe, I know, but it’s my emotional immaturity that keeps me young at heart). And you couldn’t pay me to fly or cruise first class anywhere. Sorry but no germ tubes for me or ships, or hotels, or sadly even eating out. These are things that are just too scary right now, and that takes all the fun out of it. What are Ed Sheeran and all the other performers going to do? The same thing many of us are doing. I’m sure he

is doing his best and getting creative. The Zoom concerts are getting better. Also, drivein movie theaters, although few and far between, will be making a comeback for concerts as well as films and plays. They are already set up for the most part, and people naturally social distance, so it might work. On a more positive note, RVs and camping are returning too. The thing that worries me is there may be so many of them that “glamping will be like going to Disneyland, with hour-long waits to enter and very little space. But still, it’s a good alternative for those who enjoy that lifestyle. A word of caution here: In many places, public showers and restrooms are available for campers, and I would no sooner go into one of those than a COVID ward. Just saying. Delivery continues to be really a good idea, especially for meds, because there are sick people at the pharmacy! We do it for most things, and curbside pickup is also very helpful in maintaining space. We go to the market in PPE and only use the ATM at the

bank, if possible, and wear gloves for getting gas (although the last time was like a month ago). Reentry will be faster for some than for others, but most everyone who cares or is concerned about the second wave will be moving slower than those who do not. That extra bit of caution could save your life or the life of someone you love. People who don’t want to go out should not be chastised, and those who do need to respect that there are other people in the world too, so just keep your distance. Last week, it was reported that the virus can travel 14 feet in the air. We are still learning so much about this plague that to err on the side of caution just makes sense to me. But sometimes common sense just isn’t all that common. Stay well. Barton Goldsmith, Ph.D., LMFT, is an award-winning therapist and writer. These planets could also inspire some great ideas this week. Sagittarius — The sun is moving through an intense sector of your chart, all while Jupiter and Pluto touch the same zone. This isn’t just going to affect one area of your life‌ You’ll be considering all of it. It’s a great week to start seeing a therapist or talking things out with a friend, Sagittarius.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

The Foresters’ Pat Caulfield successfully slides into second base during the Foresters route of the Bakersfield Braves on Saturday.

Santa Barbara Foresters set to host team from Texas By GERRY FALL NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Despite an 8-5 loss to the Southern California Halos on Sunday — his first setback of the season — Santa Barbara Foresters manager Bill Pintard is just happy his team is playing baseball. Pintard and his staff had to do some last-minute maneuvering to have even a shortened season after COVID-19 forced the California Collegiate league — the league in which the Foresters compete — to cancel its summer season. After working things out with the city of Santa Barbara

to use Pershing Park, Pintard put together a schedule that includes all home games through the middle of August. “It’s just great to be out here again, he said. The Foresters, who feature some of the best collegiate talent in the country, are off to a 4-1 start. “I’m really pleased with the first week of our season and being able to get back after it, Pintard said. “It’s just such a blessing to be able to play. The city of Santa Barbara and the rec department has just been wonderful in helping us do this, as well as city college.

“This is one of the best lineups that we’ve ever been able to assemble, and we’re just glad to be playing baseball again. Tonight, the Foresters host the Texas Express in the start of a five-game series at Pershing Park. The Express is making the trip west to play Santa Barbara after getting to know Pintard’s organization through the team’s decades long success at the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas. The Foresters have won seven NBC titles, the most of any team in the long history of the twoweek tournament.

“The opportunity to play us was enough motivation for them to come out here, Pintard said. “They love our team after seeing us play at the NBC World Series. The Express, like some other teams Santa Barbara will play this summer, feature some minor league players whose seasons were canceled because of the coronavirus. Unfortunately, fans are not allowed to attend Forester games this summer due to COVID-19 protocols. But Santa Barbara fans can listen online at sbforesters.org. “It is weird not seeing our friendly faces in the stands, Pintard said. “It’s weird,

but it’s the way we’ve got to do it. Spirit of Fiesta Alena Velasco, left, and Junior Spirit of Fiesta Alexandra Nocker will be a part of a Fiesta greatly changed by the pandemic.

Continued from Page A1 lessons from home,” Mr. Davis said. “The city of Santa Barbara has been incredibly supportive. We have really great partners. There are a few surprises that we are going to do in a safe way, nothing with large crowds.” He said they will also ramp up the historical content for social media sites and encourage people to dress up in their homes, hang Fiesta flags and dress up their businesses. “We’re going to bring forward history in a way that will encourage people to stay home,” he said. “We’ll bring Fiesta to them.” This isn’t the first time Fiesta has hit a roadblock. The celebration had to be cancelled after the 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake, during WWII from 1941 to 1944 and during a

drought in 1948. With this in mind, Mr. Davis remains optimistic with modern-day technology and widespread adjustments from all types of organizations. “They didn’t have what we have now with television, streaming, smartphones and social media sites,” he said. “We’re going to do what we can to bring joy and hope and music and color. It’s going to be different, but I have that spirit of Fiesta in my heart for sure. We can do something special for the community, however that looks.” He said that between Fiesta’s great partnership with KEYT and his personal experience in broadcast journalism, bringing Fiesta to everyone’s home is possible. The president said one of his favorite events of Old Spanish Days Fiesta is Fiesta Pequeña,

which typically takes place at the Mission and a “sea of people in the rose garden” dancing. This event will still take place on the patio of KEYT. There will be no crowds, but there will be historic elements and live performances at the same time slot Fiesta Pequeña typically occurs. “It’s not going to be the same, but everything’s different right now. We are going to bring joy and hope and provide dance, music and history of this 96-year-old organization in any way we can,” Mr. Davis said. “It’s just a joyous, joyous time in Santa Barbara — the best week of the year. But, the health and safety of our community comes first.” To tune in to the live streamed events, keep up with news and be updated about virtual events, visit sbfiesta.org.

We’re looking forward to coming back,” he said. Albany, New York resident and soon-to-be UCSB student Andrew Foley had recently stopped in town with his girlfriend on the way to Reading so he could show her his “new stomping grounds.” On Saturday, however, he and his girlfriend stayed at a hotel in Phoenix, Arizona, for a quiet Fourth of July. Usually Mr. Foley enjoys a fireworks show during the holiday, but this time he only saw some exploding fireworks while driving on the highway. Under normal circumstances, Ventura resident Chris Baker would have gone to a park to celebrate the holiday with his family. But since he lives with his grandfather, who is in the most at-risk demographic for contracting COVID-19, Mr. Baker didn’t want to jeopardize his health for a day of partying and ultimately stayed home. “I just didn’t want to put anyone else at risk,” he said. Describing this year’s Fourth of July as “pretty boring” compared to those of past years, Santa Barbara resident Elmer Miguel similarly said he celebrates with his family. However, his family’s annual barbecue on The Mesa couldn’t happen this year, so he wound up staying at home after working from noon to 8:30 p.m. at the Starbucks on De La Guerra Street and State Street. However,

Barbara Factor, nee Currey, of Santa Barbara, California, passed away Thursday morning, July 2, 2020, at her home in Santa Barbara, CA. She was in her 97th year. Barbara was born October 3, 1922, in Evanston, Illinois to Samuel George and Agnes Engdahl Currey. Barbara was 14 months younger than her older sister, Nancy Louise Arthur Gill, who passed away just about 16 months ago. Barbara grew up in Evanston, Illinois and studied ballet. After determining she was too short for ballet, she was encouraged by her father to develop her talent for drawing. At nineteen, she was offered a full scholarship at the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles, CA. In remembering her formative years, Barbara once stated, “I never had the least interest in having children of my own. I don’t know why, it just never occurred to me.” Upon graduation from art school, she opened her own advertising business in San Francisco. “The street car ran right by my office,” she reminisced. In 1948, she drove cross country with a friend to Miami, Florida, where she departed for Cuba to join her friend’s father who was head of United Fruit in Cuba. “Let me tell you, they led a VERY comfortable life there, and I would sneak off to paint the nearby towns and smoke cigarettes.” She recalled watching Fidel Castro playing on the plantation’s baseball team. “Yes, even then, he was an imposing figure.” Returning to San Francisco after 6 months in Cuba, Barbara moved to Los Angeles. She married James Wood, a lawyer. “Oh, he was brilliant! His mind enthralled me as he would tell me about the intricacies of his cases.” Married for four years, they divorced after she returned from an 8-month sabbatical with Parsons School of Design in Paris. Years later when once sharing a glass of champagne with her nephew, Barbara exclaimed after looking at the name on the bottle, “Oh, Taittinger! I spent a weekend at the chateau, and what I remember is everyone making love to everybody else!” Barbara was living in a new era! Feminism was bubbling to the surface and years of discussing women’s rights and interests would forever be Barbara’s passion Soon she was hired by Carson/Roberts Advertising. “They needed someone who could draw ads for women. I found I was good at understanding the product and producing the art. What did they do? Those men! They met with the clients, chatted them up and got the business, but I produced the product!” She was promoted to Art Director, and then became the first, woman Vice President of an ad agency in the United States. Having treatment for an ulcer, she found herself curious to discover more of her thinking processes and began seeing a Jungian Analyst. “Oh, I loved it,” she enthused. “I learned how and why I thought about life. I spent 15 years in analysis, and enjoyed every minute. Well, not really enjoyed,” she paused. “I just learned who I was.” In the mid ‘60s, she met and married Ted Factor, the West Coast President of Doyle, Dane and Bernbach (Wikipedia: Their campaigns for Volkswagen throughout the 1950s and 1960s were said to have revolutionized advertising.). “Ted was brilliant, enjoyed people, and loved the luxe life,” Barbara laughingly enthused. “When we traveled to Europe and New York, we ate at the best restaurants, stayed at the best hotels and met very interesting people like Jonas Salk and various Hollywood stars.” After pausing, she said, “Ted had a mind and facility with people that just endeared him and earned him Advertising Man of the Year in 1972. He was a very dear, sweet man. I loved him. He was witty which I loved and would regale me in stories. And I was a good listener. At parties, I often wound up in a corner with some celebrity giving me his/her life story.” Once again in pursuit of her art, Ted and Barbara separated in the 1980s so “[she] could find herself as an artist.” She elaborates, “I had this God-given talent where I could draw and paint so I needed to do that.” For the next twenty years she immersed herself in her art work leaving behind hundreds of sketches and paintings. An ardent feminist to the end, she often opined with disgust in a rising voice, “Men! They’ve screwed up this world for hundreds, no, thousands of years. Now it’s time for women to take control. We can’t do any worse.” Barbara Factor is survived by two nieces and four nephews, twelve great-nieces and -nephews, and fourteen great-great-nieces and -nephews who all would visit this forceful, dynamic Aunt, and all would agree, “Aunt Barbara did not suffer fools lightly.” She often opined, “This life is a curious business.”

Bud was fortunate to spend his entire career doing what he most wanted: working in the aerospace industry. He was a part of a group of engineers at MIT for 18 months in the early 1960s helping to build the guidance system for the Apollo program. He came out to Santa Barbara in 1972 with a large group of fellow General Motors engineers and enjoyed the later years of his career at Delco, Litton, and Northrop Grumman. Bud was a natural “fix it” man with an uncanny ability to figure out how anything and everything worked. When asked a few months ago how he would like to spend a day, he immediately replied, “Fixing something that’s broken.” Bud is survived by his wife, Peggy Sue Lemkuil; his brothers Jim (Joyce) Lemkuil, Bob (Barb) Lemkuil, Bernie (Bette) Lemkuil, Bill (Sue) Lemkuil; his children and stepchildren: Tom (Sharon) Lemkuil, Steve (Ellen) Lemkuil, Beth (David) Nyenhuis, Dave (Cheryl) Lemkuil, Kasey (Briggs) Wayco, Amanda Lemkuil, Don (Amy) McMillan, Jeff (Jessica) McMillan; his grandchildren Matt (Veronica) Lemkuil, Jessica (Brandon) Read, Adrianne (Aaron) Thueringer, Evan (Amanda) Lemkuil, Liza Lemkuil, Jim (Rachel) Nyenhuis, Kate Nyenhuis, Rob Nyenhuis, Megan (Andrew) Doan, Nancie Lemkuil, Lindsay Lemkuil, Tim Lemkuil, Harper Wayco, Hudson Wayco, and Addison Lemkuil; his seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Bud was preceded in death by his parents Wilbert and Adrianna. Bud was a life-long believer in Jesus Christ and most recently attended St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. He showed his love and faith by working hard on the buildings and grounds, participating on committees, and singing in the choir. Parkinson’s disease took those joys away from him in recent years, but he is remembered for the good he did while God gave him the strength. The Lemkuil family is looking forward to inviting family and friends to a Celebration of Life service at a future date.

when he got home, there was a double reason to celebrate, as the holiday also turned out to be his housemate’s birthday. They wound up playing board games and listening to the fireworks outside. Though Santa Barbara didn’t have its annual fireworks display by the waterfront this year due to COVID-19, local resident Marie Dorothy Powell remarked that she was surprised at how many fireworks she heard and saw on Saturday. So surprised in fact, that she thought setting off fireworks had been made legal in Santa Barbara. “They were wonderful… I found out the next day they weren’t sanctioned, but I thought it was wonderful,” she said.
