ELECTION 2020
It looks like the waiting game will continue. At least until today. The highly anticipated race between Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger and former Vice President Joe Biden appeared too early to call on Tuesday night. As of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Mr. Biden was projected to receive 224 electoral college votes to Mr. Trump’s 213. A total of 270 electoral college votes are needed to win the presidency. In Santa Barbara County, the unofficial results of vote by mail and mailed ballots showed Mr. Biden and
vice presidential candidate and Sen. Kamala Harris had received nearly 70% of the vote, tallying some 99,400 of the more than 145,500 total votes with 46% of precincts reporting. Mr. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence had garnered nearly 42,600 votes, good for about 29%. No other

candidates received more than 1%, according to the county elections office. The local vote mirrored the state’s unofficial results, with 68% of Californians voting in favor of the Biden-Harris ticket. A little more than 30% of state voters cast their ballots for Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence. Roughly 50% of the state’s precincts had reported as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. Despites thousands of ballots that had yet to be counted, The Associated Press called more than 40 states on Tuesday, many of which were not considered major surprises. Steve Bennett, Ventura County supervisor and Democrat candidate for State Assembly, appears likely to beat Republican Charles Cole in the race for California State Assembly District 37. As of 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, Mr. Bennett led with 73.36% of the votes with 74 of 152 precincts reporting compared to Mr. Cole’s 26.64%, according to the Santa Barbara County Elections website. The Democratic candidate said of the preliminary numbers, “I feel good about the results so far and I appreciate the support of the voters in Santa Barbara County, and I’m looking forward to getting up to Sacramento and getting to work. We need all hands on deck because California has a lot of challenges.” Speaking to the NewsPress last month, Mr. Bennett said he wants to bring
fiscal responsibility to the State Assembly as well as environmentalism in an effort to combat climate change. Other priorities of his include providing affordable housing to Californians and improving K-12 education by getting increased national-level resources to support schools. Mr. Cole’s campaign, on the other hand, stressed deregulation of businesses, cutting taxes, and improving public education by getting rid of what he sees as onesided, left-wing politics infecting school curriculum. While Mr. Cole told the NewsPress on Tuesday that he wanted to sleep on the results and see how the numbers look today, he will accept that Mr. Bennet won election if there’s no path to victory. “If they say there’s absolutely no way, then I will concede,” he said. In the race for state Senate District 19, Democrat candidate and 37th District Assembly member Monique Limón appears poised to beat Republican Gary Michaels. Looking at the unofficial early numbers, Mr. Michaels told the News-Press that him coming up short is par for the course for Republican candidates on the Central Coast and elsewhere in California.
As of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night, the local, state and national results had not been confirmed, but there were many close races and other clear leads from mail-in ballot results. Incumbent Goleta Mayor Paula Perotte is likely to win a second term over her opponent, current Goleta City Council member Roger S. Aceves. Mayor Perotte nearly doubled her opponent’s amount of votes, with 8,091 votes over his 4,242 votes. As of deadline Tuesday, nine of 14, or 64%, of precincts had reported. The incumbent has served on the city council since 2010, and aims to protect businesses and
residents from evictions and foreclosures, accelerate road repair and other infrastructure and park improvements, attract clean businesses to Goleta and support first responders. “My record shows that I’ve provided the leadership to support the needs of both residents and local businesses, while protecting the character of Goleta neighborhoods and its environmental resources,” Mayor Perotte said in a previous interview with the News-Press. “I believe that my record of community service and achievement before and during my years on Goleta’s city council demonstrates that I have the experience, energy and understanding of Goleta’s values Please see goleta on A2

Cabana Home Funk Zone shop celebrates ‘livable luxury’ By MARILYN MCMAHON
C
NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
abana Home, which is located at 111 Santa Barbara St., is a mainstay in the Funk Zone. But there is nothing funky about the upscale home furnishings store and interior design studio that Caroline and Steve Thompson launched in 2006. “We were here before there ever was a Funk Zone,” said Mr. Thompson, referring to the district between East Cabrillo Boulevard and Highway 101 and State and Santa Barbara streets. Now the site of boutique tasting rooms, cafes, galleries and shops that cater to Santa Barbara’s contemporary side, the trendy Funk Zone also has converted warehouses and buildings decorated with graffiti murals and contemporary art pieces. Surfboard shapers, winemakers and up-and-coming chefs all practice their crafts here. “What attracted us was the location and the size of the property. It was close to the freeway and easy to find, and it was 6,000 square feet, which allowed us to have 3,000 square feet for our outdoor furniture and the other half for our indoor home furnishings and interior design studio,” Mr. Thompson told the News-Press. According to Ms. Thompson, Cabana Home’s goal is to help their clients “define a sophisticated look that is both comfortable and practical. We offer hard-to-find, one-of-a-kind furniture, textiles, lighting and accessories from designers and manufacturers in America and Europe. “Our signature look is the Santa Barbara lifestyle — a celebration of living seamlessly indoors and outdoors,” she added. “We emphasize livable luxury.” Every few weeks, the owners send out Eblasts to customers, vendors and others alerting them to special items in the store — an acrylic spray painting on board by Chris Trueman, a set of bone inlay boxes, a woven dot pillow, a chair with ottoman by Milo Baughman, a photograph of root vegetables by MacDuff Everton. “We find that our customers gravitate to color,” said Mr. Thompson. “They react to the visual rather than taste or hearing. In our store, we group items according to the same color.” The same idea is carried out in the Eblasts. For example, in July, it was the color of blue. Recipients were invited to “shop the blue hue” because “Who doesn’t love the color of a summer sky? Or a sparkling pool? Or Paul Newman’s eyes?” During the phone interview, the Thompsons explained why it was a Southern tradition to paint the ceilings of porches light blue like the color of the sky. “Houses were taxed according to the number of rooms, and the owners wanted to make sure the porches weren’t counted as a room,” said Mr. Thompson. The couple, who have ended their marriage but remain amicable business partners, were Please see cabana on A5

Using the dining table and chairs as an office doesn’t cut it. It’s not a long-term solution. Ms. Thompson said, “People are learning to use all rooms in the house, including the outdoor areas. Especially noticeable is the influx of people from San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago. “While working from home during the pandemic, they have discovered that they can live anywhere and keep their jobs, said Ms. Thompson. “Santa Barbara has the space, temperate climate, blue skies and sunshine, email: mmcmahon@newspress. com

Horoscope.com Wednesday, November 4, 2020
ARIES — Today, Aries, you can expect to be somewhat more enterprising in your relationships. You may find new friends or enjoy spending quality time with some old ones, if possible. Perhaps you will look forward to an intensification of your love life. With today’s planetary configuration, you will surely find excellent resources for improving your emotional wellbeing. TAURUS — Recent aspects have allowed you to affirm yourself at work and, in a more general way, cement some aspects of your personality. Now you will be consolidating things. It’s as if you’ve conceived of a product, created it, and are now finally ready to put it on the market. If this is in fact the case, Taurus, the current period corresponds to incoming money - and profits. GEMINI — Today’s planetary aspects herald the beginning of an especially agreeable period. You will carry confidence, clarity, and positive influence wherever you go, Gemini. You’ve used up a lot of your reserves recently and made it to this stage just in the nick of time. Enjoy your new strength. CANCER — Today’s planetary configurations indicate that this would be a good moment to get rid of everything that’s still holding you back from an impending rebirth, Cancer. One stumbling block for you may be the impulse that you seem to have to blend in with others. You’re an individual, Cancer. This isn’t something to overcome. It should be celebrated! LEO — Today’s planetary configurations indicate that you can expect a very profitable period coming up, Leo. You’ve worked hard lately, and it’s only natural that you should finally arrive at this stage. You’re going to be able to measure the distance you’ve come, and above all, evaluate your power. Whatever you do, think big! VIRGO — Today’s aspects ask you to make more of an effort, Virgo. You will have to come back down to Earth and join the rest of us mere mortals. You may be cultivating your independence a bit too much. It pulls you away from people. You should try to mingle and get involved in a cause that’s bigger than you. Working +*#!2 +1$)"$ with others is a necessary part of any job.
LIBRA — You can interpret today’s aspects in several ways, Libra. The planetary configurations correspond to a search for space, whether physical or intellectual. You may be asking yourself philosophical questions, or perhaps you’re thinking of taking a long trip in the future. What will you decide to do? Will you read Kant or plan your dream trip? SCORPIO — In navigating the seas of your emotional life, Scorpio, you may feel as though you’ve made a great effort over the past month. You’ve been available and conciliatory and have done your best to maintain harmony. With today’s celestial energy, you want to be more spontaneous. The enterprising and reckless you has returned! SAGITTARIUS — With today’s celestial configuration, your emotional universe will once again glow with positive energy. You will be meeting more people, and your encounters are likely to be more profound. The coming weeks are quite promising for you, Sagittarius. The music will be in the key to pleasure and sensuality. Allow the music to fill your senses! CAPRICORN — For you, Capricorn, the changing planetary configuration portends a period of timidity. You will probably go out less, introduce yourself to fewer new people, and be less prone to show off. But any relationships you form will be much more intense than usual. The weeks ahead are quite promising, although you may have to readjust some of your attitudes. AQUARIUS — You can interpret today’s aspects in several ways, Libra. The planetary configurations correspond to a search for space, whether physical or intellectual. You may be asking yourself philosophical questions, or perhaps you’re thinking of taking a long trip in the future. What will you decide to do? Will you read Kant or plan your dream trip? PISCES — You’re likely to enjoy today’s change of tone, Pisces. Don’t you feel a need to take friendships beyond the superficial level? Perhaps you should reestablish contact with some former friends, too, although you may find that you have some bonds to repair. In any case, you can expect another month devoted to sweeping the cobwebs out of your emotional universe in order to let in sunlight and promise.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

SB voters bring sentiment to ballot By ANNELISE HANSHAW NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
One woman started to tear up outside the Carrillo Recreation Center voting precinct Tuesday morning as she told the NewsPress she was worried about humanity. “I’m worried about divisiveness,” she said. She’s even lost friendships when political viewpoints revealed different values. “Over the course of the past four years, I realized that at the core, our fundamental values were really very, very different,” she said. “Like my friends, we can go out and have cocktails and get dinner and have drinks, but they didn’t actually believe in equality.” It was very personal to her, so she didn’t want her name published. All those interviewed brought different opinions, values and concerns to their ballot. Some smiled as they greeted poll workers at the Santa Barbara site, but others had a serious disposition. Sophie Mitchell, a Santa Barbara City College student, said it was her first time voting in a general election. “It seems like the world is just on fire right now,” she said. “I think both ways are going to be crazy for the world.” Even though she didn’t have confidence in either presidential

The Carrillo Recreation Center voting precinct was mellow Tuesday morning. Few used the poll booths and instead opted for mail-in ballots or voting in advance.
outcome, she said she thought the election is important for the future of the country. Another voter who didn’t want to be named said he wasn’t “pumped either way.” He walked out of the recreation center with a morose expression. A woman named Mary was more optimistic. “I’m hoping for a good end to this. A lot of these social problems that we’re having right now, I hope that we can progress to a better situation,” she said. Steven Wienecke said COVID-19 has been an important factor. “We need an administration
who’s willing to take things seriously and can actually put a plan in place to get things better,” he said. He cares about local issues too and researched candidates from both parties but didn’t like when local politicians praised the president on their websites. Augustine Cruz viewed the election as a duty. He was most worried about the futures of schools, kids and workers. Everyone showed reverence for the occasion, even if the impending outcome made them feel anxious. The poll workers smiled,
bringing a warm feeling at the entry to the recreation center. Inside, it smelled like sanitizer. There was plenty of room to stay six feet apart. The polling place was sparse as a handful of voters dropped off ballots. Occasionally, one used a poll booth, but many had their ballots already dotted with black ink. They grabbed “I voted” stickers and smoothed them out across their chest. A few immediately took pictures of themselves adorned with the sign of civic duty. email: ahanshaw@newspress.com
Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. Mr. Trump was expected to win the traditionally red states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, South Carolina, South Dakota, Wyoming and West Virginia. By 8:30 p.m. local time, election officials in a pair of key swing states — Pennsylvania and Michigan — announced that ballot counts in some areas of the states wouldn’t be finished until today. Multiple media outlets reported that the states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, North Carolina and Georgia were too close to call as of Election Night. Before the semi-official results were released, more than 100 of Mr. Trump’s family members, friends, donors and staff gathered at the White House to watch returns from the East Room. Mr. Trump was watching votes come in while upstairs in the residence along with a few close aides. According to the Associated Press, most of the top campaign officials were monitoring returns from a “war room” that was set up in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Mr. Biden spent Tuesday last-minute campaigning in Scranton, Penn., where he was born, and in Philadelphia. The Democrat challenger also made several local stops in Wilmington, Del., where he spent Election Night.

said the most pressing business that needs to be taken care of is for Republicans and Democrats in Congress to come together and finally pass an economic relief package to combat the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We need to make sure that we continue to provide more resources to help more individuals who are unemployed,
businesses that are trying to stay afloat, families that are facing evictions,” he said. He added that there is a need for a “comprehensive national plan that provides for testing, tracing, and treatment so we don’t have to choose between our public health and reopening our economy.” Long term, Rep. Carbajal has no shortage of priorities. These include moving forward with an infrastructure proposal that will modernize infrastructure
in the Central Coast and across the country, combating climate change by investing in renewable energy and getting off of fossil fuels, using investments in renewable energy to create new jobs and make up for those that will be lost when Diablo Canyon Power Plant shuts down in 2025, and addressing the rising cost of healthcare premiums and prescription drug costs. When Mr. Caldwell spoke to the News-Press about the vote not going in his favor, he said that he
needed a far bigger turnout from members of his own party and Independents to win. Not only that, but he needed support from a portion of Democrat voters as well. “I actually have to win a portion of Democratic votes in order to win this thing, and I don’t know if we’ve met that challenge, but it doesn’t look good,” said Mr. Caldwell, who is also a News-Press columnist. email: jgrega@newspress.com

In the race for state Senate District 19, Democrat candidate and 37th District Assembly member Monique Limón appears poised to beat Republican Gary Michaels. The County Elections website showed her with 67.90% of the vote with 105 out of 226 precincts reporting. Ms. Limón told the News-Press that she was “very grateful” to the senate district’s voters in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties for voting for her to go to the California Legislature’s upper house. The assemblywoman would take over the seat soon to be vacated by Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson. Regardless of election results at the national level, Ms. Limón said there’s plenty of work to be done in California in order to address the economic impacts from COVID-19. One of her biggest priorities will be working with her senate colleagues in adjusting the California state budget due to the federal government not passing another COVID-19 stimulus package. “In their absence of doing that, it does require that the state to relook at the budget… And that’s a really hard position for a state like California that’s already in a $54 billion-dollar deficit,” she stated. Looking at the unfavorable numbers, Mr. Michaels told the News-Press that him coming up short is par for the course for Republican candidates on the Central Coast and elsewhere in California. Though he pointed out that Ms. Limón had a significantly bigger campaign budget than he did, Mr. Michaels admitted that

California Republicans need to hone their message if they want to see better results. “We’re not offering enough if I see early returns like this in the Democrats’ favor,” he said. One possible race that could yield GOP success however is the race for the State Assembly’s 35th District, in which incumbent
Republican Jordan Cunningham is defending his seat from Democrat challenger and Morro Bay City Council Member Dawn Addis with a 7% spread. Late in October, Mr. Cunningham told the News-Press that his first order of business in his next term will be addressing affordability and economic development in his district, which includes all of San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County. According to the County Elections website, as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Mr. Cunningham had 53.64% of the vote with 31 of 74 precincts reporting. In a statement to the News-Press, the assemblyman wrote, “This election — like all of 2020 — has been unprecedented. Given the impacts COVID-19 has had on the electoral process, and the major changes in how and when people are casting their ballots, it is likely impossible to determine the winner of this race tonight.” He added, “I am proud of the race we’ve run, and I look forward to seeing the results once both County Clerks are finished counting all the ballots.” As of Tuesday night, Santa Barbara County’s vote on Proposition 15 was very close with 105 of 226 reporting. Some 50.48% of voters had voted no, and 49.52% yes. Proposition 25 was also close, with 50.54% voting yes and 49.46% voting no with 105 of 226 precincts reporting. No votes on Propositions 14, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 23, had more comfortable leads, as did yes votes on Propositions 17, 22, and 24. email: jgrega@newspress.com

Carbajal intends to move ahead with infrastructure plan if elected
Just before 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, Mr. Biden addressed his supporters from Wilmington, many of whom were in their vehicles as he gave remarks. Mr. Biden, who was joined by his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, said his campaign felt good about where they stood as of Tuesday night. “I believe here tonight we are on track to win the election,” he said, as cars honked in support. Mr. Biden called for patience until all the votes were tallied, and said that results may not be known until today. “We knew this was going to go long, but who knew we were maybe going to go into (this) morning and maybe even longer,” he explained. “We knew because of the unprecedented early vote and the mail in vote that it was going to take a while. We’re going to have to be patient until … the hard work of tallying the votes is finished. And it ain’t over until every vote is counted, every ballot is counted.” Mr. Biden added that it is not his place, nor Mr. Trump’s, to declare who won the election. “That’s the decision of the American people,” Mr. Biden said. “But I’m optimistic about this outcome.” Mr. Trump had announced he would make remarks on Tuesday night, though had not taken the podium as of 11:15 p.m. He did take to Twitter before addressing his supporters at the White House and said, in part, “they are trying to STEAL the Election. Votes cannot be cast after the Polls are closed!” The tweet was flagged by Twitter, with the social media site saying that some or all of the content shared by Mr. Trump “is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process.”
