Santa Barbara High’s Peabody Stadium, rebuilt over the last three years at a cost of $39 million, is expected to reopen to student use on Monday.
By MARK PATTON NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER
Elise Simmons has watched the new Peabody Stadium rise during her 30 months as principal of Santa Barbara High School, but it was like she was seeing it again for the first time on Tuesday. “It’s breathtaking,” she said as she guided the media through the rebuilt facility. “There are these moments when I just catch myself going, ‘I can’t believe I’m the principal of this beautiful school and this Peabody Stadium.’” Santa Barbara High’s historic stadium is expected to get its first use on Monday when the Dons’ football team moves its workouts from the grass field of nearby Santa Barbara Junior High School and onto the state-of-theart, synthetic turf of Peabody. “We’re creating a dedication video that will be a walkthrough,” Dr. Simmons said. “We’re going to send it live on the 24th, which is exactly 96 years since the original Peabody Stadium dedication.” The new, concrete grandstand — built with the same Mediterranean architecture that defines downtown Santa Barbara — will seat 2,300, which includes chairback seats for donors. It adds to the 1,100-seat visitors section on the other side of the field. Dr. Simmons pointed to some of the decorative tiles and said, “It’s just those handmade touches — the Santa Barbara style — that make this stadium so special. It’s a high school stadium, and yet it’s like someone’s beautifully built mansion. It’s unbelievable that we get that as a gift for our students and for our community.” Other new features of the stadium include a scoreboard,
press box, elevator, café, restrooms, and plazas built on both sides of the concourse. The $39 million project was funded by donations raised by The Foundation for Santa Barbara High, as well as from Measure Q2010 funding and state seismic mitigation funds. The old stadium, built in 1924, had been deemed a major earthquake risk. Todd Heil, who took over as Santa Barbara High’s athletic director this summer, said he hadn’t seen anything like the new Peabody Stadium during his 20 years as the Dons’ boys soccer coach. “The setting is beautiful,” he said. “It’s just an incredible spot to be able to not only play a game, but to watch a game.” The guts of the stadium will eventually include a classroom, training room, locker room and team room. The Dons still plan to make their traditional run onto the field from the new, wider tunnel in the middle of the concourse when they play their Jan. 8 opener against St. Joseph’s — a contest that has been delayed by more than four months by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was originally scheduled to be finished in April of 2019. Delays costing an additional $8 million arose when collapsed drainage conduits — laid before the original stadium was built — were discovered by construction crews. “What’s the saying? Nothing good comes easy,” Dr. Simmons said. “This is evidence of something that was a lot of hard work. “I can’t wait for the boys to be out here and the girls out here competing, and us in the stands. It’s going to be amazing.”
Peabody Stadium expects to play host to its first track meet in a quarter century next spring thanks to a state-of-the-art, synthetic track that is part of its $39 million makeover.

World War II veteran Bill Boyd was wounded during a bombing mission during which his plane was shot down, for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was taken as a POW in Germany.
Santa Barbara High School’s century-old campus has a new stadium that will play host to its first football game since 2016 when the Dons play St. Joseph’s High on Jan. 8.
Santa Barbara’s seniors were all freshmen when ground was broken for the facility before the start of the 2017 school year. “They’re chomping at the bit, the football team, our boys and girls soccer teams, our lacrosse teams,” Mr. Heil said. “And then you think about our track and field team which, for the first time in forever, gets to practice on campus instead of using City College, and finally gets to hold a track meet that we haven’t been able to hold for a few decades. “We’re all excited about that.” The need for a new track sparked the fund-raising campaign that the Foundation for Santa Barbara High School launched more than eight years ago. Peabody Stadium’s cracked, asphalt track was deemed unsafe and inadequate for meets a quarter-century ago. To create enough room for a regulation track and 110-meter straightaway, the back of the new stadium had to be pushed back against the slope of the canyon. Additional slopes in the bowl below Santa Barbara High’s main campus were also excavated and held back by retaining walls. “They had to carve out three extra acres to make enough space,” noted Kate Murphy, a member of the foundation’s executive board of directors. “My wow is just the space that it takes up,” Dr. Simmons said. “To be in the middle of Santa Barbara, this beautiful city, and you just look over these retaining walls, and beyond at our school that’s more than 100 years old, and onto the Riviera. “It’s just unbelievable, the space that it takes up, and how gorgeous it is.”
Dr. Simmons led the media in a walkthrough that began at the lower section of the “Walk of the Dons” — a pathway from the campus above which is used during graduation ceremonies. She said she gets excited every time she takes it all in. “Part of it also has to do with the people I’m with,” she said. “The positive energy of just seeing it through their eyes adds another layer, like being out here with the student-athletes.” The Walk of the Dons passes a memorial which lists all the Santa Barbara alumni that have died in military service. It also passes the stadium’s original cornerstone honoring Frederick Forrest Peabody, the founder of the Arrow Shirt company who funded the facility’s construction in 1924. “We put it in storage, and now it’s the cornerstone here again,” Ms. Murphy pointed out. Santa Barbara High’s soccer teams will also begin stadium workouts next week. The basketball teams will practice on the outdoor, blacktop courts located between the stadium and Anapamu Street. COVID-19 restrictions still limit the stadium’s use to just Santa Barbara High students. Dr. Simmons said the public will eventually be allowed to use the track. “The community helped pay for it, and it was a commitment to them,” she said. “We appreciate all of the support of our community and our district and our alumni, and everybody who helped and stuck with us through this whole thing.”

Kids Draw Architecture Sketch sessions focus on their own homes By MARILYN MCMAHON

NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
zzy Savage recalls how she became involved with Kids Draw Architecture, the award-winning program developed in 1990 by the Santa Barbara Chapter of the American Institute of Architects to teach young people about the art, complexity and importance of architecture. “While I was an upper elementary school kid, I was on a walk with my family at Lake Los Carneros when we turned the corner where you start to see the Stow House. Out in front of the house’s porch steps, I saw kids drawing and the KDA booth. I remember it was close to the event wrapping up, but I was very excited and settled on the lawn with the provided paper and pencil and began to draw. My drawing did not make it into the calendar, but I have warm memories of drawing and being surrounded by other kids drawing in a beautiful environment.”
Four years ago, Ms. Savage became a member of the KDA committee that runs the program which was created by Cassandra Ensberg, a local architect. “I joined the committee as a way to give back to the community and get young people excited about architecture,” said Ms. Savage, who attended the Otis College of Art and Design and graduated class valedictorian from its architecture/ landscape/interiors program. Currently, she is a job captain at 19six Architects and is in progress for taking the Architecture Registration Exam to become an architect. “Here I am working on the Solvang Festival Theater and Lompoc Theatre renovations. I love that I am at an office where I can work on projects that give back to the community,” said Ms. Savage. She is equally excited about her work with KDA, explaining that typically the sketch sessions are held twice a year at selected locations such as the Santa Barbara Mission, Santa Barbara County Courthouse and the Lobero and
Arlington theatres. “We bring local architects to draw with the participants, sharing their drawing techniques and knowledge of the buildings. After both sessions, the kids’ drawings are compiled, and a selection is made by the committee to form the Kids Draw Architecture Calendar for the following year. Around the holidays, we have a gallery exhibition and party at the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara. It is wonderful to see the young artists’ faces light up as they come in and see their work professionally displayed,” said Ms. Savage. This year, sketch sessions were planned at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Montecito Union School. Because of the pandemic, however, the KDA committee opted to have the children draw their own homes. “We had some lovely locations planned for this year, but due to not being able to

gather in person, our committee created a prompt that allowed kids to see the architecture in their immediate surroundings at home. We reached out for participation through previous participants, the schools and social media. The response was fantastic. We received a large number of drawings that allowed us to see through the perspective of a kid of their home. There were so many beautiful drawings — the detail of the older kids and simple graphic quality of the youngest drawers, said Ms. Savage. “Many KDA participants return year after year, and once they reach high school, some come to sketch or to help in other ways and can earn community service credits. Fantastically, some participants, like myself, have gone on to study and work in architecture, engineering, planning and other related fields. email: mmcmahon@newspress.com

Phife
hife loves to play fetch and responds well to “sit, “stay and “come. The smart boxer/Labrador retriever mix is awaiting adoption through the Santa Barbara Humane Society. Phife, who’s 7 years old, is friendly and affectionate. He loves spending time with people and snoozing on a comfy bed. Phife can be a bit picky about other dogs and would be happy to be the animal in the house. If he has to be around another canine, he would prefer a female about his size. His adoption fee? That’s up to you. During November, people can name their own price for adoptions on all humane society animals 6 months and older, including Phife. To learn more about Pfife, go to sbhumane.org. To adopt Pfife, email adopt@ sbhumanesociety.org and make an adoption appointment. — Dave Mason

Whoever shares your company tonight is extremely lucky. Make sure this person is worthy of you. GEMINI — You may feel locked in a bind of deep emotion and stubborn attitudes with close friends or lovers, Gemini. Perhaps it’s hard for you to say what you really feel. You may be under the impression that you’re being tested and judged by everyone else. Try not to let your ego get in the way of a good time. Say what you feel without getting worried about how others will react. CANCER — Your spirit sparkles, Cancer. You may feel filled with tremendous energy as you go about your day. Your sense of adventure is high, and there’s very little that gets you down. One area that might be difficult to deal with right now is love and romance. You may feel like this is the one domain in which things aren’t going the way you’d like them to. Patience is the secret. LEO — You may feel yourself slipping into a deeper understanding with a close friend or loved one, Leo. Romantic situations are heating up, and you’re slowly letting your inhibitions fade away so they’re completely absent. You realize the exuberance and excitement that come when you come out of hiding and let your playful spirit charm the world. Put serious subjects aside and make time to have fun and be more social. VIRGO — Most of the time it’s good to have strong opinions and be independent and willful, Virgo. But there are other times when this attitude turns people away you’re hoping to draw closer. There’s a stubborn yet sensitive attitude in your world of romance that may +*#!2 +1$)"$be difficult for you to deal with. Perhaps you’re taking a more
rational approach to things while your loved one is taking a more emotional one. LIBRA — Sensual, passionate lovemaking is definitely on the agenda of activities for tonight, Libra. Fun, excitement, romance, and love are all key themes likely to take precedence if you have anything to say about it - and you do. Don’t let someone else dictate your path for you. You know what you want, so don’t say you don’t care when you do. Love is coming your way. Learn how to grab it. SCORPIO — You may feel like the brakes have been slammed in the romance department, Scorpio. Realize that this doesn’t mean you have to stop having fun. Laughter and good times are in store for you today as long as you don’t get hung up on the slow pace of your love life. You can have a good time while taking things one step at a time. Savor each moment. Don’t try to rush to the next. SAGITTARIUS — The stars indicate that love and romance are in your favor, Sagittarius. You will find that this area of your life is going well. Shower your partner with affection. You honey’s ego needs to be stroked. However, don’t spoil him or her to the point that your mate becomes self-centered and ends up disregarding all of your wants and needs. CAPRICORN — Your sensitive, sensual side is being drawn out, Capricorn. You may feel like your romantic side is on display. You’re like a dancer onstage, and you accept this role with pleasure! There’s a great combination of energies at work letting you become more realistic about love and approach it with dramatic flair and courage. Be more expressive when it comes to your needs and desires. AQUARIUS — Come out of your shell and be proud of your sensitive side, Aquarius. Although you may feel vulnerable when it comes to love and romance, this doesn’t mean that you have to hide it. You may think that everyone else has it together in this department, but don’t be fooled. They’re just as insecure as you are! Go ahead and let this side of your personality shine. Admitting your vulnerability is wonderfully attractive. PISCES — You shouldn’t have any problem getting your way in most areas of life, Pisces. The time is ripe for you to take the lead. Unfortunately, there may be one important part of your life that isn’t going exactly to plan, and this is love and romance. It’s likely that you will run into a tremendously stubborn attitude that you can’t seem to break through. It could be your own.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

Veterans share their experiences in WWII vETS
Continued from Page A1 POWs after their aircrafts were shot down. Their lives prior to serving were quite different, however. Born in 1924 and originally from Los Angeles, Mr. Livingstone had a semester of college under his belt when he was drafted in January 1943 at the age of 18. He turned 19 a month later. Mr. Boyd was born on Aug. 6, 1922 and grew up on his family’s farm in Callaway County, Mo. Mr. Boyd graduated from high school in 1941 and didn’t have money to go to college, so he decided to spend a year working. When Japan attacked the United States’ naval base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Mr. Boyd knew that America was going to enter into the conflict that would come to be known as World War II. He was 19 years old at the time of Pearl Harbor, it didn’t take long for him to be drafted. Both men ended up flying bombing missions, but Mr. Livingstone was originally assigned to be a gunnery instructor while he and his fellow American GIs were stationed in England. However, there was a lack of available equipment for gunnery instructors and the Army Air Forces needed more men for bombing crews, so Mr. Livingstone ended up getting assigned to the 334th squadron of the Eighth Air Force Group’s 95th Bomb Group. On the B-17 named “Worrybird,” he served the role of bombardier. Mr. Boyd also served in the Eighth Air Force in its 305th Bombardment Group. Like Mr. Livingstone, he too was a bombardier. In an interview with the News-Press, Mr. Boyd said he filled that role because he didn’t particularly enjoy piloting the Flying Fortress. However, bombardier was only his second choice. “I didn’t enjoy flying… I qualified for all three, but I ranked navigation first and bombardier second, and pilot third. They only had room in the navigation school for a few people, so they took guys that were 20/30 visual and we were put in bombardier training” he said. Getting shot down was a somewhat different experience for the two men. On Nov. 2, 1944, Mr. Livingstone was recruited as a substitute member for a bombing crew going on a mission to destroy the Leuna oil refinery in Merseburg, Germany. His plane was hit by enemy fire as it approached. As the battle-damaged Worrybird held 2,500 feet altitude, a German Focke-Wulf 190 flew up beside the bomber and the fighter’s pilot gave a handwave to the B-17 through his cockpit window. Because his crew’s engineer was putting the bomber’s landing gear down, Mr. Livingstone said it is possible that the German fighter pilot took it as a sign of surrender. However, the engineer could only get one of the Worrybird’s landing gears down, so bailing out was the only option. However, before the crew members knew for sure that they were going to bail out, Mr. Livingstone dropped the bomber’s Norden bombsight out of the plane. The Norden bombsight was a secret device of the USAAF, so the crew didn’t want the Nazis to get a hold of it if the plane landed intact. When Mr. Livingstone dropped the bombsight out of the plane, the Focke-Wulf 190 started shooting at the B-17, perhaps thinking the bombsight was ordnance. “When he saw this bombsight falling out of the airplane, he may have thought that it was a bomb,” he said. Mr. Livingstone and his crew members bailed out of the descending Worrybird. Casualties from the jump included the plane’s tail gunner, who was hit by flak and killed during the jump, and the co-pilot, who broke his leg when he hit the ground. Mr. Boyd was shot down on his 17th bombing mission, during which he was flying with a different crew than his usual, filling in for its regular bombardier was wounded and in the hospital. As the B-17 he was in flew over German city of Mannheim, they encountered enemy fire and flak tore through the hull of the plane. “All at once it was a bam, bam. Two 88-millimeter shells exploded right above my right shoulder outside of the plane and it just pulverized all my instruments. I lost my intercom and I couldn’t talk to any of the crew,”

Cowboys gathered ‘round the fire After a full day’s ride. Staring ahead as the sun went down While the flames began to subside. All accounted except for one Who didn’t make it through. The mood was somber while all settled in To accept the devil’s due. They’ll remember his name As long as they live And tell the tales again. About how life is short, but worth the ride Right up to the very end. Love you Eric. Mom, Dad, Sabrina and Clayton.

A young Bill Livingstone, front row center, with fellow crew members of the B-17 named “Worrybird.”
Mr. Boyd recalled. He smelled gasoline fumes coming through his oxygen mask as he tried to keep wires on his instruments from sparking and blowing up the entire plane. Suddenly, a piece of flak pierced his right shoulder. For this, Mr. Boyd was later decorated with a Purple Heart. With their aircraft damaged, the B-17’s navigator told Mr. Boyd that they weren’t going to make it to the bombing target or back to England. Therefore, the crew headed for Switzerland. When the bomber lost two of its four engines, the commander ordered the crew to bail out. Though near Switzerland, the crew missed the neutral country upon landing and were still in Germany. All of the men got out of the plane, with Mr. Boyd and four other men captured and sent to POW camps. The five other crew members were captured by Nazi civilians and while on route to be taken as prisoners, were killed and buried in the middle of the forest. According to Mr. Boyd, when the tide of war turned to the point that the Axis powers had no chance of beating the Allies, the Nazis who killed his fellow crewmen exhumed the bodies and reburied them in a proper cemetery. This effort to conceal their crimes was unsuccessful. While one of the Nazis wasn’t punished, two were sentenced to prison, with one taking his own life. Life as a prisoner of war was “boring,” as Mr. Livingstone recalled. While incarcerated at Stalag VII A in Bavaria, he was hungry and often cold, as Europe was undergoing the most brutal winter it had experienced in 25 or 30 years. Mr. Boyd also experienced that bitter winter while a POW at Stalag Luft I in Barth. As he recalled, it was enough to make one not take showers whenever they were offered every month or two. “The water was as cold as ice, so I missed one or two of those showers,” he said. Mr. Boyd also attested to being hungry while a prisoner. Sometimes he and his fellow POWs had food to eat from Red Cross parcels, but they were constantly losing weight. “You’d look down at your knees and your leg
was small, but your knees look like a football or something. The bones don’t shrink but the flesh does,” he said. While American servicemen didn’t experience physical torture as POWs in Germany like those who were taken prisoner by the Japanese, Mr. Livingstone said the Nazis made extensive use of psychological torture by putting prisoners into solitary confinement. While getting interrogated before getting sent to Stalag Luft I, Mr. Boyd experienced this. “It was blacked out from midnight to midnight,” Mr. Boyd recalled of the room he was put in. Liberation for the two veterans came at the hands of different Allied powers. Whereas Mr. Livingstone and his fellow prisoners at Stalag VII A were liberated by American troops from General George S. Patton’s tank division, Mr. Boyd and the POWs at Stalag Luft I were freed by the Soviet Red Army. After the war, Mr. Livingstone finished school at USC, where he graduated with a degree in architecture, and got married in 1946. He got redrafted during the Korean War but didn’t see combat like he did in World War II. He then worked in the building materials industry with his father and brother until he started working for the Riverside County Planning Department. Before retiring in 1994, he also worked as the city of Irvine’s planning director and then as a planning consultant in Santa Barbara. Mr. Boyd started college at Iowa State University in 1946 and studied engineering before transferring to the University of Missouri. After working in the refractories industry as a salesman in Indianapolis, where he met his wife and got married, the company he worked for merged with Kaiser Aluminum and became the company’s refractories division. This led to him getting transferred back to Missouri for a number of years before getting transferred to its headquarters in California. Mr. Boyd has four sons and one daughter. email: jgrega@newspress.com

Mrs. Perez has 30 years of experience in the medical field, and Mr. Perez was the sole caregiver for a loved one. It was overwhelming being the only provider, and he saw the importance of in-home care. “There are a lot of veterans that work in this field because they have a lot of compassion,” he said. He served four years in the Navy as a cryptologic technician, and he loved it. (Tuesday was the anniversary of his enlistment.) He joined in 1972, inspired by the slogan “Join the Navy, see the world.” And his favorite part of the experience was the travel. His ship, the U.S.S. Little Rock, was part of the ceremonial convoy for the reopening of the Suez Canal in 1975. It was a historical moment and one of the highlights of his time. were thrilled when one of their staff members, Rafael Benavides, won BrightStar’s 2020 National Caregiver of the Year. “We’ve continued to grow as a company but really, we’ve always felt caregivers are
the most important part of our company,” Mr. Perez said. “That’s the biggest award we’ve ever won.” He says in-home care is the future of medicine, and he tries to reach a variety of clients, from pediatrics to elderly. He doesn’t put a minimum number of hours on a visit. If a client just needs help a couple hours per week, they’ll schedule it, which isn’t commonplace in the industry. He thought he’d be able to serve more veterans, but he doesn’t see many sent through the Veterans Affairs program. Mrs. Perez adds that in-home care isn’t covered by many healthcare plans or organizations. “We’re hoping a lot of programs will support veterans because they really deserve a better deal,” she said. She always liked serving veterans when she was a caregiver. “They all have a history and a story to tell,” she said. Mr. Perez likes to stay in touch with veterans’ organizations locally and is part of a national program that connects veterans to care. He and Mrs. Perez both have a parent receiving in-home care. They sympathize with their clients’ children and enjoy being a partner in the community. email: ahanshaw@newspress.com
