Perspective Music Parents America

Dear Band & Orchestra Directors, Music Parents America is a how-to guide for school band parents and music booster groups. As you and most other music educators already know, booster organizations are the backbone of many strong music programs and their members are in constant need of information about services and vendors. This annual supplement provides information on several key areas of parental involvement – ranging from summer camps to fundraising and travel – that are critical to helping parents and boosters make informed decisions about the opportunities afforded to the school music program. You will also find MPA to be a valuable resource when seeking bids for uniforms and footwear or exploring new festival opportunities. After reviewing this guide, we ask that you pass it along to a key booster member. We welcome your comments on this MPA supple“Booster ment, as it was designed to further strengthen the bond organizations are between educator and school parent. Reach out to SBO the backbone on Facebook (facebook.com/sbomagazine), Twitter (@ of many strong sbomagazine.com), or through the contact page on our music programs.” standard website, www.sbomagazine.com, and let us know how we can better serve you, your students, and your school music groups. Music Parents:

The Key to Ultimate Success By Scott McCormick

I

am the proud parent of a freshman band student. I’ve also worked in the field of music education and advocacy for over 25 years. At times I think that I have a pretty good handle on what my role and responsibilities as a music parent should be. However, the reality is that all of us music parents are continually trying to answer these critical questions: What is my role as a music parent today? Am I really needed? Are we there to support the teacher? Are we chaperones and volunteers for our kids’ trips and events? Are we boosters? Are we advocates? Both? Are we fundraisers? The answer, resoundingly, is: “YES” – to all of the above! There are a number of key roles that parents can play in support of their children’s school music program

Key Role: Communications Assistant Do you notice how little information comes to us from teachers? Don’t misunderstand me; we have excellent teachers and administrators who “get it.” But

the reality today is that many of our teachers struggle to find any additional time to communicate with parents and the community – and they could really use our help. With the state of the economy, this reality is not going to change any time soon. Teachers are being asked to do more with less, so if we parents want our programs to thrive we need to step up. Thanks to social media, websites, and blogs, sharing the benefits of music education can be easy. It’s also easy to use email to deliver information to parents to keep them engaged. But “easy” doesn’t mean that no time is involved or that blogs and email newsletters magically appear. Parents who like to write and be on a computer could assist music teachers with these communication functions very easily.

Key Role: Community Representative Attending school board meetings to learn what your district’s priorities are and where your school board members stand is more critical today than ever. Parents should be present at each and every meeting of the school board, not just when wind of a challenge or problem has surfaced. I hate to admit that until I started the Association of Music Parents (AMP), I had not attended many of our own meetings. This has now changed; I attend them and the board knows the reason I am there is that “I am an interested music parent representing our districts arts programs.” It is critically important that our school board members know there are committed parents engaged in the school board process. Ultimately, we, the taxpaying parents, elect school board members to office. And if things are not as taxpayers believe they should be, taxpayers are the ones who can ultimately make changes in district leadership. I have met with our superintendent on a couple of occasions over the past couple of

Key Role: Greeter and Speaker When your groups perform at concerts and events, I would imagine that your teachers, like ours, could use help in writing and sending concert invitations to school board members, the superintendent, assistant superintendent for curriculum, school principals, community and business leaders, other parents, and so on. In our district, we have sent letters on behalf of our music program to invite parents and administrators to

and more. If you attend a concert where there are no announcements beyond introducing the songs that our kids our going to play, it’s a missed opportunity! These are perfect occasions to deliver the messages of “why” we are doing what we are doing (not just “what” we are doing). Once again, it all comes back to communication.

Key Role: Fundraiser With the immense pressure that school districts are under from a budget perspective, far too often we are finding the music and arts programs being some of the first areas targeted for cuts by our administrations. I do not believe our booster programs should become the answer to these funding crises. At the same time, all booster programs need to raise money, whether for instructional assistance, an upcoming trip, or added purchases that fall out of the curricular budgets from our schools. As we look at raising funds as a parent organization, making our decisions about how we go about this process more strategically might serve our organizations well. Our parents and the community do not want to see us knocking on doors every month with another small need or opportunity. We need to plan and find those two or three major fundraising opportunities that will provide the financial support deemed necessary and then set out to meet those goals.

Key Role: Data and Statistics Collect enrollment statistics each year. To gather statistics from past

the flow of students through music programs. With the technology platforms being utilized by most districts to collect and disseminate information to parents, teachers have the ability to track grades and GPA information as well as graduation data. Connecting student success and outcomes to the music programs helps to support the cause and assure that your district maintains a thriving music and arts program or our kids.

FACT: “At this time when you are making critical and far-reaching budget and program decisions… I write to bring to your attention the importance of the arts as a core academic subject and part of a complete education for all students. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act defines the arts as a core subject, and the arts play a significant role in children’s development and learning process. The arts can help students become tenacious, team-oriented problem solvers who are confident and able to think creatively.” – Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, 2009

As a parent, I would suggest one of the greatest opportunities we have is to utilize our roles to bring other parents into the fold. There are many jobs to be done – big and small. Oftentimes we form cliques and do not present an inviting atmosphere that is encouraging to new parents to become involved. This can be one of our greatest mistakes – or a place for opportu-

AMM envisions a world in which the joy of making music is a precious element of daily living for everyone; a world in which every child has a deep desire to learn music and a recognized right to be taught; and in which every adult is a passionate champion and defender of that right. To represent the industry in matters of music education and education reform legislation and funding, the NAMM Foundation and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) connect arts, education, civic engagement and youth-serving organizations through the SupportMusic Coalition, a public service and advocacy education initiative that impacts resolve and support for music education in local communities around the United States and abroad. This advocacy effort now unites over 300 national, regional and international organizations comprised of parents and community leaders seeking to improve access and opportunity in music and arts learning. Tens of thousands of concerned citizens visit the website every month and use its resources to keep music education strong in their schools and communities. By connecting these advocates with resources to help them keep music strong in their communities, they have the music research, advocacy materials, tools and resources to make their case with public officials and community leaders that every child in America deserves a complete, well-rounded education that includes music and arts. At Vivace Productions workshops Students are given the opportunity to work with the best in the business, including Tim Lautzenheiser, the staff of the George N. Parks Drum Major Academy, Thom Hannum and many more! The clinicians focus on developing your students’ performance and leadership skills and teach them how to be better band members. Band Leadership Training emphasizes building the skills needed to be effective in a leadership position. Students learn the basics of these skills and how to apply them when working with their peers.

The Marching Band Workshop provides an opportunity for directors and students to learn about contemporary marching techniques in a college campus setting. 4-day long sessions are geared specifically for drum majors, color guard members, percussionists, instrumentalists, and twirlers in addition to directors and staff. Participants leave the workshop with a better understanding of what it means to be an integral part of an ensemble. Workshops are held at Kutztown and West Chester Universities in Pennsylvania every summer. Long respected as one of America’s top programs, 2013 marks the 44th anniversary of the Marching Band Workshop.

Find the Piano That’s Just Right for You

F

or centuries, the piano has occupied a central place in music education, providing a firm foundation for a lifetime of pleasure or for further musical studies. Even students who eventually take up a different instrument often also play piano, or grow up in a home in which parents or siblings play. A piano is one of the more expensive items a household acquires, and the purchase of a piano is usually a major family milestone. Schools often need to acquire large numbers of pianos to accommodate the needs of students, teachers, accompanists, and performers. Throughout much of the 20th century, it was possible to make this major purchase successfully with the knowledge of just a few long-established, familiar brand names. But in the 21st century, the manufacturing landscape has completely changed. Old, familiar names are now often made by companies different from the originals, in far-off places, with new designs and specifications that use modern technologies and space-age materials.

New, unfamiliar names abound. Hybrid keyboard instruments combine the best characteristics of traditional, digital, and player pianos. Where to go to learn about all this? Piano Buyer, at PianoBuyer.com, is a free, online publication (also available in print) that will quickly bring you up to speed when you need to buy a piano. How-to articles cover new and used pianos, with ratings and prices; digital, player, and hybrid pianos; and special topics, such as buying pianos for institutions, high-end pianos, and piano maintenance issues. Searchable databases for new and used instruments allow you to quickly home in on those that exactly match your needs. Brand profiles tell you who’s making what, and where. Use the Local Services Directory to find a piano dealer, tuner, teacher, or mover near you. When the time comes to bring a piano into your home or school, spend those dollars wisely. Before you buy, find out all you need to know, free, at www.PianoBuyer.com.

Whether you’re a teacher or parent who wants to introduce children to music, a regular concertgoer eager to learn more, a young artist seeking guidance from established masters, or someone who can only get to Carnegie Hall virtually, the Weill Music Institute (WMI) is your portal to a richer musical experience. WMI serves some 170,000 people annually with programs and partnerships that allow people of all ages and backgrounds to explore their potential as performers and audience members. The Online Resource Center brings WMI’s extensive collection of multimedia and interactive materials to educators, young artists, and teaching artists around the country and throughout the world. International engagement includes Musical Exchange (ages 13–19), which invites teens to connect with peers from around the world and share their musical performances through Carnegie Hall’s global online community, and the Weill Fellows program, which welcomes international teachers and administrators to New York City for a week of learning and information sharing. Programs for artists—such as the Professional Training Workshops—give young artists the chance to learn from the world’s most accomplished conductors, instrumentalists, and vocalists. For more info go to www.carnegiehall.org or call 212-9039670.
