TIMBER FRAMES by R.A. Krouse

east elevation

first floor plan

The floor plans show how a timber frame allows for an open floor plan, meanwhile creating nostalgic nooks where desired. The outdoor living space and two decks on the north side provide gorgeous views of Bromley Mountain. The cedar shakes for siding keep this magnificent home humble to its surroundings. The rounded stone pillars and basement floor facade accents the exterior fireplace, while the metal roof creates a rustic aesthetic .

Weeks Residence Winhall, Vermont

The Weeks Family is looking to build a home overlooking Bromley, Mountain in Winhall, Vermont. They are looking for this home to represent the quite cozy hideaway that Vermont State is. The timber frame interior allows for a unique and intimate setting for the weeks and their four children. As the junior designer I worked in collaboration with the builder to design this 1900 sq. ft. mountain-side house. I created corrected and updated all documentation from foundation plans to elevations. As I designed the interior spaces I stayed connected with the client and successfully met all their needs.

As a design intern, I worked with and collaborated with their in-house designer. I updated and corrected all AutoCad projects and sat in on all meeting between designer, architects, engineers, and hospital officials, regarding construction on the new surgical wing. I designed a custom millwork piece for reception area. I created material boards for new and existing satel;ite buildings. In collaboration with the designer I designed donor recognition, ICU prototype, and presentations.

Edward Smith Elementary is more than a school it is a safe, helpful place for the whole community. Ed Smith is constantly adapting to the changing needs of the community. Ed Smith was one of the first inclusive schools in the nation, and now they are taking on 7th and 8th grades in addition to their already established K-6. Ed Smith has communicated that while keeping architectural integrity intact; they need reorganization of classrooms, improved circulation, and necessary additions to the gym, cafeteria, and auditorium. It is evident that Ed Smith has an important role in the community and an innate connection to nature. It was most important to create a connection between education, community, and nature throughout Edward Smith Elementary.

3rd-4th Grades

As the children learn and grow at Edward Smith Elementary School their development is represented aesthetically by the changing seasons. Kindergarten through second grade represent spring as a new beginning followed by summer ( 3rd - 4th grades), then fall (5th - 6th grades), ending in winter (7th -8th grades) where they are ready to begin another chapter of their educational career. 6th-5th Grades

The green atrium is a very important addition to Edward Smith Elementary. The atrium is where education and nature connect. The library and same second level classrooms overlook the atrium. It provides cleaner air quality for the students while new solar panels and rainwater systems educate and provide students with energy efficiency . A designated classroom is located in the atrium for teachers to break away from the typical classroom setting any time of the year in a climate where that is not always possible.

When you walk into the lobby at Ed Smith the children are surrounded by suspended clouds and indoor pond to create the illusion that they are still outside. The cafeteria is redesigned with a designated cafe for the 7th & 8th graders.

A new library has been designed for the always imaginative students at Ed Smith. The new library is two stories with new attributes such as sharing spaces and a computer lab. The library has individual reading nooks that over look the green atrium. There are tree sculptures and organic shapes to keep connection with nature, education, and community.
