Bridging Worlds: How Teachers Can Moderate Social Media Literacy and Digital Citizenship In the Classroom
Campus Tour
Elizabeth Hatfield, Room 113
Take a walk around the Second Baptist School campus to see technology in action! We will stop in a few classrooms at the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools, as well as take a brief tour of the library and technology center.
Though digital citizenship does not fall under the primary curriculum for educators, many times social media infiltrates the culture of school and has the potential to undermine the great work being done in the classroom. This talk looks at how children and teens use media today, how social media impacts school environments and what educators can do to help students understand the impact of their social media presence. Research has shown that parents struggle setting boundaries in this new environment - indicating that knowledge-based input from organizations like schools might be seen as welcome rather than intrusive. What elements of digital citizenship can be incorporated into today’s classroom? How can teachers use social media to their benefit? The very real online world students participate in outside of school brings challenges that today’s teacher needs new tools to navigate. This talk presents academic research for schools evaluating and reevaluating how to connect that online activity with today’s educational environments by considering best practices and our evolving technological culture.

Keynote Speaker • 12:45 – 1:35PM Adopting a Posture of Experimentation
Using OneDrive to flip your classroom
Tracy Clark, The Hall
Sharon Kemnitz, St. Agnes Academy, Room 108 Use OneDrive to save video files, practice files and assignment sheets. Video files can be shared with your class and will play within OneDrive. Teachers can also share assignment sheets and practice files in OneDrive. Students can complete assignments and share with peers or with the teacher. OneDrive gives students and teachers 7 GB of free storage and works well with Microsoft office.
Don’t settle for a posture of standardization and safety in your classroom. Discover the advantage of being an amateur, the mindset of dancing with fear, and the inspiration of connecting with an authentic, creative community, through hands-on experiments, thinking routines, and even some sketchnoting. Push against the edge of possibility and adopt a posture of experimentation as we brainstorm, innovate, and shed some light on the enigma that is creativity and ideation.
Incorporating Technology with Classroom Projects in Grades 3-5 Christine Dinh, The Joy School, Room 114 This session will focus on several different modes of technology and directly relate them to an academic goal or project. Examples include using QR codes for research, designing websites to use and share information, using websites like StoryBird to teach personal narratives, utilizing social media to share and gather information, and creating picture or video montages for presenting assignments like a book report to a wider audience. I believe in practical application and creative expression of information and hope to inspire other educators to embrace technology in their classrooms.

Robotics in and out of the classroom
Entrepreneurship
Jeff Gessel, Kinkaid, Room 114
Cal Burnham & Sharon Cook, Second Baptist School, Room 113
The use of robots in classroom curriculum can have a dramatic impact on student involvement and learning. Robots outside of the classroom will unleash the creativity and competitive nature of anyone that enters the arena. In this session, we will discuss the implementation of robotics as a teaching tool and the creation of after school robotic programs. BEWARE the excitement of robots is contagious.
Sharon Cook and Cal Burnham will be talking entrepreneurship, design thinking and technology. We will discuss our pilot program, our path to its development, where we are and will be. The class takes every step possible to simulate real entrepreneurship; we are teaching kids about problem solving and recognizing opportunity.

Metacognition Without Tears: Creating Innovative Learning Opportunities With Visible Thinking
Nancy Nichols and Rita Herring, Second Baptist School, Room 108
Tracy Clark, Room 139
Rita Herring and Nancy Nichols will show ways that they have used their apps with best practices in mind. Student examples and videos of students using certain apps in a classroom setting will be shared with an emphasis on student choice and curriculum integration. Be the first on your team or at your school to use an app in a new and different project! If you have ideas, there will be a few minutes for attendees to share their awesome ideas with the audience.
Deep thinking doesn’t have to be a drag. Design powerful learning opportunities through the intentional use of dynamic technology tools and Visible Thinking Routines. Explore practical yet powerful ways to get your students creating, collaborating, and sharing thinking. Teach students disciplined thinking that actually opens up creativity and problem solving.
Wonderful World of Twitter
“If opportunity isn’t knocking, build a door” Milton Berle
Justin Smith and Nancy Wahl, Second Baptist School, Room 115 Twitter is used by educators worldwide to collaborate and share ideas on best practices, innovative ideas and authentic learning. We seek to train teachers in the many facets of Twitter that are practical, inspirational and relational. We have personally experienced the great impact Twitter can have on teacher and administrator development.

Classroom Workflow with Google Docs
Using MinecraftEDU in the Classroom John Grube, The Fay School, Room 114 Learn how to use this very affordable tool to allow students to engage in a virtual environment. In this session, you will see a program that allows you to create custom maps for almost any subject. Want to explore mountain ranges, plateaus, rivers, canyons and other landforms? Minecraft can do that and more. Have students be immersed in history or learn about online safety and team play. I will highlight a project we did this year with my fifth graders called “Mission to Mars.” I will demonstrate how to use this program with elementary grade levels, but you can easily do these with older grades.

John Maklary, St. Laurence Catholic School, Room 108 In this session, we will walk through the idea of a paperless classroom. We will discuss the benefits of using Google Docs, how to create and share student folders, how to help teachers organize folders and how to create resource folders to share with students. This system gives teachers the ability to distribute electronic resources, allow students to easily submit work to the teacher and teachers will be able to review and comment on all submitted work. All this can happen without ever hitting the print button! Genius Hour Lisa Sachs, The Shlenker School, Room 115 Across the country, educators are taking Google’s innovative philosophy of 80/20 time and applying it to their classrooms. Simply stated, the philosophy encourages Google employees to spend 80% of their time on work related projects and 20% of their time on a project that solves a problem or pursues a passion. This past year at The Shlenker School, we decided to apply this philosophy with our fifth graders by creating Genius Hour. For approximately one hour a week, students are given “free time” to work on their own Genius Project. The variety of projects students chose to work on was amazing and their passions were visible in each and every one! Students created roller coasters, video games, made movies about bullying, wrote books and the list goes on… Stop by to see the results of this innovative project and learn how you can create your own Genius Hour!

To Print or Not to Print? Javier Saavedra, Geoff Brooks, Bethany Hildebrand Second Baptist School, Room 113 In this session, we will delve into the incredible world of 3D design and 3D printing, and we will explore its relevance in an educational setting. Join us in the discovery of vast, innovative resources that promote authentic learning through exploration and application. We will look at the conceptualization of ideas and the engineering design process that students will encounter while using this state of the art technology. At the same time, we will introduce Fusion 360, an amazing free software that is geared towards creativity and 3D printing. The format of this seminar includes an in-depth discussion beginning with inception of the design to the physical product. Do not miss this exciting opportunity to go over this amazing technology that has been called the “New Industrial Revolution.” Students as Creators: Getting Started with Media Projects in the Classroom Tracy Clark, Room 139 Empower students to become innovators in the classroom through the creation of their own digital projects. From simple photo and text, to video and interactive content, allow students to demonstrate their thinking in ways that support individual learning styles and preferences.
