NEIGHBORHOOD CONTEXT The neighborhood of Deep Ellum is filled with energy and life. The people and culture revolve around nightlife and expressing what makes them unique. Creating an art and music venue with a park like setting for the residents of Dallas would embody this spirit. The Neo-Native campus will provide art studios and work spaces in the urban environment.
The key objective of the master plan is to create a truly mixed-useproject, integrating a diverse, mutually supportive combination of urban uses that include local/micro-retail, restaurants, services and studios. The centerpiece of the proposal is a linear courtyard an animated mid-block passageway that connects both public and private spaces.
Arrayed across the grounds, the program spaces will interconnect around a network of alleys and greenspaces, blurring the threshold between interior and exterior as each buildings deflects and gestures to mix context and program.

PROJECT GOAL
As part of the project, one wants to refocus one the neighborhood of Deep Ellum to discover potential future opportunities to preserve the neighborhood’s unique character and provide a toolbox of opportunities for future development. One must challenge with investigating the historical context of the area, tasked with responding to questions on the neighborhood’s original street layout, the role that Deep Ellum played in the overall context of the city, and looking at dramatic changes to the built fabric of the place that have occurred throughout its history. This project will seek to establish a new identity, yet keeping the existing local culture as a precedent. The project seeks to bring a modern feel to Deep Vellum, while promoting tourists as well as local culture and art.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The design of the linear courtyard includes various of elements of exposed concrete, connecting the surrounding buildings both physically and visually, accentuating their common features. The courtayard appears as a carpet of integrated stripes of concrete paving, vegetation and lighting with concrete benches and trees scattered randomly. The strips of vegetation consist of lawn, and seasonal plants.
T H E A L L E Y WAY S The alleys are a modernized arcade lined with small eateries with a common seating area creating a gathering place for pedestrians to eat, drink, and socialize - a convergence point in the heart of Deep Ellum for social and cultural exchange. Skylight will pave the passageway, washing the indoor-outdoor space with natural lighting yet providing protection and insulation from natural elements. The exposed brick wall defines the raw character of the alley.
An open air connector fronted by restaurant and retail storefronts carved into and orginal buildings. A shade structure for the roof-patios extends over seating in the alleys.

B U I L D I N G M AT E R I A L S
The environment of Deep Vellum is largely dependent on the design of storefronts along the public right of way. Storefronts within Deep Vellum are not only intended to maximize the store’s impact and visibility in an exciting and innovative manner, but also to activate the street and consider the pedestrian scale through the use of components such as seating, planters, awnings, and lighting. Proper attention is paid to the design and detailing of each storefront including scale, color, and materiality to be compatible with the character of the surrounding environment and district in which they are located. Additionally, careful attention to detail will extend to all portions of the interior store that are visible from the sidewalk. Each storefront is designed for compatibility with the character of the building, the surrounding architectural content, and overall project image.
Determining the finishes to be used on the storefront requires consideration of several issues, such as the quality of the material, appropriateness to the character of the store and neighborhood, and durability and maintenance. These issue significantly affect the perception of the store and entire development. Appropriate treatments include: • • • • • •
Metals Finish grade hardwoods - stained, painted or natural finish Lacquered surfaces Marble, granite, terrazzo, limestone, and other natural stone products Glossy materials such as glass, transparent and back-painted Other quality, durable materials
