( INTRODUCTION) Dimensions in design are often assigned to the physical space in which they exist; the first dimension length, the second height and the third depth. The emerging role of the professional designer in our culture forces us to reconsider this canon. As you’ve undoubtedly learned in your time in the graphic design department, design is an action, a process associated with problem solving. A poster is a poster, a package a package and an app an app. All are designed but none in their final form is a design. They are what they are. As we reorient the dimensions of design, consider a designer’s first dimension to be assigned to human context. Context is the first consideration of any designer who focuses on the user. The second dimension is assigned to concept. Once context is thoroughly considered, your concept must be applied. The third dimension is associated with media. The new designers rarely, if ever, dictate media. Media are always informed by the context defined in the first dimension and are always appropriate to user need. But what about the fourth dimension? Commonly associated with time, the fourth dimension is where future designers will thrive. The new designer considers human need as the foundation of their work and anticipates user needs across media, bringing new obligations and opportunities to augment physical space and immersive, visual experiences. As you close the 2014–15 academic year and your college career, consider the words of Horst Rittel: “The designer has no right to be right or wrong, the result of his efforts can only be good or bad, as all solutions inform the next …” The time you’ve spent developing your toolkit while at SCAD has great value. Four years stitched together by infinite moments. Good or bad, each moment informed the next, and as you continue to design your life, we anticipate your next moments to be great.

( INTERSECTIONS of POSSIBILITY ) Current technology allows for design to easily exist within a multidimensional reality. Due to this newfound potential for designing greater experiences, today’s designers are beginning to consider the relationships between context, visuals, form and the fourth dimension: time. It is through an understanding of both the intersections of these conditions and the undefined spaces between them that one can develop design that communicates thoroughly. The emphasis on collaboration and use of rapidly advancing creative technology provides tangible opportunities to visually express all four dimensions at once. The Secession 2015 modular logo takes all these dimensions into consideration. Three visible pieces move around in space to display their changing relationships within a sequence where they intersect and overlay. Simply put, this year’s exhibition is about the infinite breadth of possibilities before us. These are the dimensions in which we continue to explore, grow and exist.
