- Established in 1733 by General James Edward Ogelthorpe as one of 13 British Colonies in North America. - Savannah is home to 22 historic squares pleasantly furnished with benches, fountains, monuments and statues. - From the shops and ships of River Street to picturesque fountains and treeshaded parks, from white sand beaches to avenues lined with tropical palms, Savannah is a city of European elegance and Southern charm. - Other notable residents over the centuries have included Girl Scouts of America founder Juliette Gordon Low, authors Flannery O’Connor and Conrad Aiken, lyricist Johnny Mercer, “Jingle Bells” composer James Lord Pierpont, folk artist Ulysses Davis, jazz musician Ben Tucker and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. - The city offers all the cultural and commercial advantages of a contemporary metropolitan center— museums, theaters, restaurants, an international airport and a thriving business community. - The city and surrounding coastal area have been popular filming locations for Hollywood productions. Films shot in Savannah include Forrest Gump, Forces of Nature, The General’s Daughter, The Gift, The Legend of Bagger Vance, Undertow and The Haunted Mansion. - Within easy driving distance of Savannah are major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta; resort areas such as Hilton Head, S.C., and Orlando, Fla.; and notable historic cities such as Charleston, S.C., and St. Augustine, Fla. Savannah is a city of historic importance, great physical beauty, commerce and culture.

- SCAD was founded in 1978 by Richard G. Rowan, Paula S. Wallace, May L. Poetter and Paul E. Poetter to provide college degree programs not previously available in southeast Georgia and to create a specialized professional art university to attract students from throughout the United States and abroad. - Named “Hottest for Studying Art” among America’s Hottest Colleges by Kaplan/ Newsweek. - Has more degree programs and specializations than any other art and design university in the United States. - SCAD offers a choice of degree programs in 46 majors and more than 50 minors. - The university serves more than 9,330 students from all 50 United States and 96 countries worldwide through locations in Savannah and Atlanta, Ga., a residential study abroad location in Lacoste, France, full degree programs offered online through SCAD eLearning, and a new location opening in Hong Kong in Fall 2010.
- Named one of “America’s Best Colleges” and one of “America’s Best Graduate Schools” by U.S. News and World Report. - Named one of the United States’ “Most Interesting Schools” and one of “25 cuttingedge schools with an eye toward the future” by Kaplan/Newsweek. - Within six months of graduation, more than eight out of 10 SCAD 2008 alumni responding to a survey had secured jobs in their fields or had been admitted to graduate school. - The university confers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Fine Arts and Master of Urban Design degrees, as well as undergraduate and graduate certificates.

CAREER SERV I CES The office of career services provides career development and professional job search assistance to students and alumni through individual career advising, small group workshops, opportunities for students to network with industry leaders, interest and personality assessment, an interactive Web site with more than 700 jobs posted each quarter for SCAD students and graduates, intensive outreach to business, an informationpacked career resource library, ongoing corporate recruitment visits and an impressive job and internship fair each spring attended by more than 100 major employer-partners.
Employer recruiting
Representatives from companies across the nation visit SCAD each year to visit classes, review portfolios, give informational presentations and recruit and hire outstanding job and internship candidates. The career services staff also travels throughout the year to conferences, trade shows and to employer corporate offices to strengthen current relationships and develop additional employer relationships to promote opportunities for SCAD students. There are also three dedicated business outreach specialists who develop employer relationships on behalf of our students and graduates on both coasts and in the Midwest.

Recent recruiters include Dreamworks, Ruffian, Liz Claiborne, Pixar, Walt Disney Company, Macy’s, Wild Apple, Hallmark, LucasArts, Rhythym & Hues Studios, Digital Domain, Kiz Toys, Cartoon Network, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, JCPenney, Conde Nast, Husqvarna, Marvel Comics, Mohawk Industries, Southern Progress Corporation, Anthropologie/Urban Outfitters/Free People, Abercrombie & Fitch, Chico’s FAS, Marc Jacobs, American Greetings, Hirsch Bender and Assoc., and many others.
Internships
A recent study by the National Association of Schools and Colleges (NACE) found that almost 70 percent of interns are offered jobs at the company they intern for. This is an impressive reason why students are highly encouraged to engage in internships. Not only are students often offered jobs upon graduation, it is also an opportunity for them to explore the real world of their profession and build experience for their résumés. The office of career services works with the academic department chairs, faculty and staff to assist students with their internships.
EMPLOYMENT Employment statistics are calculated every year, six months after graduation, using information obtained through a graduate employment survey and direct communication with alumni. Over the last six years of consistent research and tracking, the office of career services has found that more than eight out of 10 SCAD graduates are employed in their field six months post–graduation. An employed graduate is defined as one of the following: a graduate who is working in a professional position in art and design; a graduate who is regularly freelancing, building a body of work and exhibiting it, working on commissioned projects; or a graduate who is pursuing an advanced degree.

SCAD
SPRING SEASON
SCAD had a very productive spring season during head coach Melissa Batie’s first year. The Bees played tournaments in St. Augustine,Fla., Siesta Key, Fla., Statesboro, Ga., and Hilton Head, S.C. After just a week of practice, SCAD hit the road to play at Flagler College in a combined indoor and beach tournament. During the indoor portion of the day, the Bees beat Sun Conference rival Embry-Riddle as well as NCAA Division II opponent Rollins. That afternoon the squad broke out into twoplayer teams on the beach and had equal success. The Bee’s next outing was the Fiesta on the Siesta Collegiate Beach Volleyball Challenge in Siesta Key, Fla. Facing off against some of the best Division I teams in the east, SCAD held its own on the beach. The team of Heather Friend and Kendall Nichols advanced to the quarterfinals of the gold division, where they lost to Notre Dame after beating the tandem from Florida State. SCAD stayed indoors for its next set of matches as it made the quick trip up the road to Georgia Southern. The Bees took sets off the Eagles as well as Division I schools Kennesaw State and Alabama-Birmingham. The final outing of the spring season saw the Bees take part in the AVP Next Tournament in Hilton Head. SCAD had plenty of success in Saturday’s Open Pool play as well as the co-ed tournament on Sunday. All of the teams made it out of pool play–including the duo of head coach Melissa Batie and assistant coach Matt Linebarger–with Friend and her partner winning the event.
