Thailand witnessed some very positive developments over the past year, just to mention growth in GDP of 4o/o and exports 7% (in USD terms)- both figures higherthan originally forecasted, a stable currency, as well as introduction of modernized bankruptcy and foreign business laws. lmpofts grew substantially, 16% in USD terms, and also domestic demand moved in positive territory. Recently the IMF concluded that Thailand needed no more assistancefrom thefund, afterdrawdown of USD 14 billion of the original USD 17.2 billion standby credit programme. The outlook for 2000 is also positive, with expected higher GDP growth, further acceleration in exporl and import, and strengthening of the Baht, all reasons for further optimism. What did not go as well as expected in 1999 was the corporate debt restructuring, which didn't show the rapid and necessary progress. This, in connection with the estimated USD 15 billion combined losses in the Thai banking sector from 'l 998 until now and the appearance of new problem loans, must now be.considered the last major obstacle to a lasting recovery and to the inflow of further foreign investments, and also the reason why the upswing will not be a quick "V-shape", but will take several years to sustain. Hopefully we will over the next few months see an acceleration in the number of successfully concluded restructuring cases. As you read these lines we have just had the annual general meeting of the Chamber. The past year 1999 proved to be an active Chamber year, with several types of events: company visits to Carlsberg Brewery and ABB University, a "Law Day" with Tilleke & Gibbins and Kamthorn, Surachet & Somsak, an evening with Den Danske Bank International Luxembourg, a lunch meeting with Minister to the Prime Ministers Office H.E. Abhisit Vejjajiva and representatives of leading Thai banks, and a highly successful Nordic Chambers Millennium Ball 2000 with the entedainer Eddie Skoller at the Oriental. Fudhermore joint foreign chambers luncheons with guest speakers Dr. Henry Kissinger, Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, and Minister of Industry H.E. Suwat Liptapallop. We also participated in the celebration of the.1 50 years anniversaryof the Danish Constitution atthe Royal Danish Embassy, and should not forget the traditional Christmas Lunch at the Stable Lodge.

That year' Their Majesties King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit visited Denmark, where they stayed at the Royal Summer Residence, Fredensborg Castle. Their Majesties rooms were close to that of Crown Prin. cess Margrethe right next to the main staircase where they would constantly run into each other. At one of the official dinners during the stay, Crown Princess Margrethe was also seated next to HM King Bhumibol on his left-hand side. Two years later, in 1962 the Crown Princess would be all ears, when her parents, King Frederik lX and Queen Ingrid on their re. turn from Thailand recalled their fabulous visit and the innumâ‚Źrable pleasant memories it had given them. That year, She started seriously to plan her own visit to the fascinating and exotic Thal' land, which she was looking very much forward to discovering herself.
The following year, on B October, 1963, the Crown Princess boarded a passenger ship arranged by the East Asiatic Company and after 41 days at sea, She finally arrived in Bangkok on Sun'

As a newly crowned monarch, Queen Margrethe adopted the motto "God's help. Love of the people. Denmark's strength." These are words that the Danish population has helped her to give content. The love of her subjects has always been evident. "The Job," as Queen Margrethe calls her calling, is carried out with a loyalty and energy equal to the dedication of demanding po-

unforgettable days in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya. In Bangkok, where the schedule of the Crown Princess was rather tight, she visited the Floating Market, the Temple of Dawn, The East Asiatic Company, Maersk Bangkok Branch, Christiani & Nielsen, Thai Airways and the Thai-Danish Dairy Farm. Most memorable was also a Scandinavian dinner party arranged for the Crown Princess at the Royal Danish Embassy, where 220 Scandinavians oarticipated. During this stay, Crown Princess Margrethe
also witnessed the signing ceremony of a Thai Danish Cultural Agreement with Ambassador Ebbe Munck officiating on behalf of Denmark. Perhaps the most fascinating part of this visit was the Crown Princess' jungle expedition in
Kanchanaburi province near the river Kwai to caves where a Danish historic expedition had recently uncovered age-old wall paintings. It would be twenty years, before in 1981 HM Queen Margrethe ll again would find time for a return to this beautiful country from which She had so many fond memories. Travelling with Her Majesty would this'time be HRH Prince Henrik whom she had married in 1967. Tivoli Bar & Grill Opens in Bangkok Danish businessman Jorgen Lundbaek on Saturday 12February opened a new bar and grill restaurant, Tivoli on Sukhumvit Road between Soi 13 and 15. Tivoli - which in Denmark doesn't
open untill early summer - this year opened in Bangkok on Saturday 12 February That was when
Danish businessman Jorgen Lundbaek celebrated the inauguration of his latest venture, a new bar and grill restaurant named Tivoli situated right on Sukhumvit Road in the Clinton Enteftainment Plaza between Soi 13 and 15. The opening night was well visited. During the reception hours where free drinks and delicious snacks - prepared by the Danish chef - were served it was at times even difficult to get in through the door.
The inspiration for the name of this new barlrestaurant obviously comes from Denmark with its famous Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. A large wall painting of the garden, painted by Danish artists Jette Herne and Alek Krylow, decorates the walt aoove the open grill area. The Tivoli is unique in its com-
bination of a superb grill steak house and a lively, upmarket night club, - a transformation which will take place every night around ten
o'clock when the live Philipino band comes on stage and the dance floor opens. Gregers Moller
