Since last, some very well known major Danish companies in Thailand have made headlines. Ecco Tannery is a new addition to the Ecco Co. shoe factory that has long been established in Thailand. And our always faithful beer sponsor Carlsberg has re-launched what must now be more than just "probably the best beer in the world". But it gives a special pleasure to see entrepreneurs who take the big jump and become independent - the company Emdal Ltd. is an excellent example. The time has come where we must say our goodbyes to Monica Holmgren,

our Executive Director of the Chamber. After managing the Danish Thai Chamber of Commerce and actually at the same time the Norwegian and Swedish ditto, Monica will soon be residing in her native Sweden. On behalf of all the previous boards and the members who have come to appreciate Monica's dedicated contribution to Denmark and Thailand, I wish to express our gratefulness and admiration for the valuable work she has done. lt gives me at the same time great pleasure to

announce that John Svengren will take over as our new Executive Director.

New law on bribing The Danish parliament on March 30 passed a new law making it a criminal offence to bribe officials anywhere in the world - especially in Denmark. A new anti-corruption law passed

by the Danish parliament makes it a crime to actively bribe a government official anywhere in the world as well as any official working with an international organization. The penalty under the law

is a fine or imorisonment for a maximum period of up to three years.

It is not relevant whether the official accepted the bribe or not - offering the bribe is enough to be prosecuted. The term bribe is not limited to money alone either, but defined as "unjustified offering of a gift or any other form of

advantage with the purpose to move that person to do - or re-

frain from doing - something in that persons line of duty." It doesn't matter whether it would be illegal for the official to do whatever the bribe was intended to make the official do. The term official is anyone who works in a Danish, foreign or international oublic service. One loophole in the law is the

term "official", which does not cover persons working in private organisations. Another loophole is, that it is perfectly legal to reward an official for having done

Ecco to manufacture daily 25,000 sq. feet of leather in Thailand The new Ecco tannery, opened in AprtL will be a showcase of Danish environmental resp o n si bi I ity. B a re ly opened, an expansion of the tannery's production volume is already being planned.

pro-

vided the reward was not promised before the ofiicial did his or her duty. Finally, the term "unjustified"

gives plenty of room for interpretations. In a comment to the new law issued by the Ministry of Justice, it is used as an example, that giving a gift in connection with a jubilee, a retirement, or any similar occasion is "justified" and therefore not a cdminal act. The Ministry of Justice has issued a statement in relation to

the new law, further trying to clarify that somehow it is still a

companies. That way, Ecco will get valuable information on trends

in the industrv and the market.

This year, the first year of operations, the new tannery should be able to reach a turnover of 1 4 mill. US-dollars. Next year, this figure will more likely be 25 mill. USdollars, according to Mr. Kasprzak. Raw materials for the production will come partly from Denmark. Other hides are imported from Indonesia and the USA. Environmentally, the company is truly Danish in its mindset. The tannery has invested 1,5 mill. USdollars in a fully automatic and comouterized waste water treat-

ment system, - an investment which will have its competitors

shaking their heads in disbelief. Danish in origin, the 35 year

old Ecco made its debut in Thailand in 1993 with the opening of

a manufacturing plant in Ayutthaya. Coinciding with the opening of the tannery, Ecco announced plans to join the Pan Group, part of Thailand's Saha Group, to design and produce athletic shoes sometime laterthis year. This will be Ecco's step into the fast growing sports shoe market.

"The global trend of sports shoes is growing significantly. lt inspires us to expand into this new market sector in addition to casual shoes," Mr. Kasprzak said at the opening of the new tannery. Gregers Moller

Brewery [hailand) Co,, Ltd. is stepping up its efforls to win the tough war of leading the premium beer brands in Thai-

nent Heineken. The current strategy is to develop all the four factors needed to ensure this success - quality, bottling (packag-

ing), marketing and customer

serytce.

According to Jim Napier, Carlsberg will go all the way to maximize the return on its investments in Thailand, which started in 1993 with the opening of the first Carlsberg Brewery right next to the Highway 41 leading out north of Bangkok. "As for quality, Carlsberg Beer has always used premium raw materials and modern production facilities to achieve freshness and pleasurable taste. This won't change," Jim Napier assures the consumers. "Our bottles have, however,

been changed to the color of standard green used in Denmark and elsewhere and our cans have been redesigned to support sales

promotion. As for Carlsberg's market leading draught beer, more advanced equipment will also be used to maintain freshness," he adds.

The company is the sponsor of Liverpool Football Club in England and a sponsor of Euro 2000 Football Tournament to be held in Belgium and Netherland between June 1O and July 2, 2000. In April, Carlsberg launched a Euro 2000 promotion activity linked to the new green bottles.

Carlsberg fans may have the chance to win one of ten ticket to fly to the Netherlands to witness the final match of Euro 2000 on July 2 as well as many premium prizes. How did business with the EU go?

Well, funny enough it went to Japan and the

Asean countries! Where did Thai Business Go?

By Gregers Moller When trying to understand Thai trade statistics, one confusing element is that volume, value and currency does not always show the same development. Moving around between these three main viewing points is something of an exercise in mental flexibility: Are we now talking about the development in Baht-terms, or in volume terms, or in terms of value of the volume in Euro.. So, hdw did business go? Well, in Baht terms, during the first seven months of 1999 the value of Thailand's total export to the world fell by 13,2 o/o eoft1pared to the same period in 1998.

In terms of Euro, however, the Thai export increased 1,3 o/o because the average exchange rate during that period was 47,514 Baht per Euro in 1998 against 40,701 Baht per Euro in 1 999. lf we stay with the Thai Baht perspective of a13,2Vo decline in Thai exports world wide during the first seven months of 1999, the exports to the EU declined more than that - a drop of 17o/o -

and so did the exports to the USA, which declined 16,4% The same situation seen in a Euro perspective shows that Thai

exports worldwide during that period increased - as mentioned before - by 1,3o/o, while the export to the EU declined 3,1 %. A somewhat different picture. Staying with the Euro per-

spective of a decline in Thai exports to the EU of 3,1%, the imports from EU increased 6.6% during the same period compared to 1998. This was, however less than the total Thai imports which increasedT,S%. In other words, if Thailand exported less to the EU than the average drop in exports and also imported less from the EU than the average increase in imports, Thailand must have taken its business elsewhere during that penod. So where did business go? The answer is: to Japan and the Asean countries During the

For every 100 ECU imported from

the EU, Thailand exported 156 ECU. That was better than Thailand's total trade balance during the period which showed that for every 100 ECU, Thailand

imported from anywhere, the country exported only 1 17 ECU.
