New Era for Thai Air Force With Swedish Jets
T
he first batch of the total 12 Gripen fighters arrived at Don Muang air force base after flying out of Sweden on Feb18 and then flew down to be stationed at the Wing 7 air force base in Surat Thani. The second batch of six Gripen jet fighters is scheduled to arrive next year. A Saab 340 Erieye airborne early warning aircraft that the air force also bought from the Swedish government is also based at the Wing 7 air force base. The Gripen 39 C/D aircraft will replace the ageing F-5A/B jets. The F-5A/B aircraft will be completely phased out by the end of this year. ACM Itthaporn Subhawong said yesterday he was convinced the jet fighters would bring modern and significant changes to the air force. With the fighters, the air force would be transformed to a network-oriented system, he said. ‘’The Gripen is like a new type of computer with all the modern stuff. Most importantly, the supplier has agreed to transfer all the technology to us,’’ ACM Itthaporn said, adding that software for the fighters could be constantly updated. He said the capabilities of fighter pilots would have to change completely as the new system on the jets would provide them with flight information linked to the other fighters on a screen before them.

Scandinavian Design now in Silom
T
wo Danes, Kenn Thaysen and Julie Ploger celebrated on Thursday 17 February 2011 the Grand Opening in Silom of their new furniture design company, Designers Field. Designers Field creates Scandinavian designs with a touch of Asia, offering lamps, furniture, textile & wood accessories to the professional market. The business was founded as a Thai company last October and the new showroom and the office in Silom is a result of the growth the company experienced so far. The business is two legged. Sourcing of products to retail chains is one, while the other one is Designers Field?s own brand, Puji, sold to importers and wholesalers worldwide. ”The origin of the name is my friend?s daughter. She had a problem pronouncing the Danish word for cushion - pude - instead she said puji. So Puji it is”, says Julie Ploger. Designers Field has high hopes for the future. The company will stick to sales, marketing and design. All other aspects of the business like manufacturing, logistics and accounting are outsourced. And the Danish couple sees no dark clouds in the sky.

Some of the guests had come down from Bangkok to be part of the important moment but most guests were members of the local Hua Hin VIP circle. Among the guests congratulating the owners of the new showroom were Khun Chalermkiat ‘Lek’ and Khun Alisara ‘Peung’ Suwanprinya, Scandi Kitchens Co., Ltd. who only last month on 14 January opened their own Kvik showroom on Rama 9 in Bangkok. Another important guest was Flemming Bo Sorensen of Oriental Invest who has bought Kvik kitchens for all the houses in his latest real estate project with 72 units. Young Thai-Norwegian in
Although just a young star on the racing track, Sandy Stuvik has his life priorities all set. By Nuppol Suvansombut, Soffi Chanchira Larsen and Gregers Moller Photos by Soffi Chanchira Larsen
10 ScandAsia.Thailand • March 2011
W
hen the start goes in the first Formula Renault Europe 2011 in Spain this April and the cars starts roaring down the track, one of the drivers, Sandy Stuvik, will have turned 16 years old only a few days before. That makes Sandy the youngest of the pack and he will battle against drivers with much more experience. Despite his age, the chances that the young half-Thai half-Norwegian racing driver might actually get on the podium are quite high. Last year, Sandy Stuvik won the Asia Formula Renault Championship as the youngest driver ever. And his performance was convincing to say the least. Never before has any other driver won the race with such a high score and with such a comfortable gap in points down to the driver on the 2nd place. Racing against drivers much older than himself is nothing new to Sandy. Martin Stuvik, his father, and Thomas Raldorf, his trainer, have always let him race against drivers above his class ever since his amaz-
ing talent was first discovered many years ago. Being among the top 10 drivers in his first year in the Formula Renault Europe is an important goal on Sandy’s way to his ambitious ultimate goal of racing for the F1 world championship. “On the road to F1” is his motto. Sandy has been testing race teams and tracks in Europe over the past several months. By the end of February and early March this year, he was testing tracks in France and Spain. This time its the ‘pre-season tests,’ where he will be practising with all competitors of the Formula Renault Europe 2011.
Tough fitness program A typical days for Sandy starts at 6.30 or 7 the latest. His schools starts at 7.50 and lasts until 15.10. Then it is time for physical exercise. He admits that he was not always that fit in the past. Sandy was while racing karts always due to his size heavier than his competitors. “Karting is different you don’t need to be that fit to be able to drive fast,” he says.
Formula Renault Europe
But to drive a Formula Renault car he needs more than an hour in the gym to control the 210 horse power. His weigth is something he continuesly has had to work on to ensure his competetiveness. “After school, I would first do a cycling trip and try to burn as many calories as I can. Next I would do some running or swimming or work out to build more muscle mass, tells Sandy while laughing modestly. He knows it is a tough program. It is not an easy life since he still has a few years left until he finishes high school. Sandy is doing his best to keep his good academic records unaffected while also bettering his driving performance on the track. “It may not seem that way, but school is the first priority,” his father Martin says. But in real life it will typically be almost 22.30 before Sandy is finally ready to do his homework. No wonder a perfect day for Sandy is ”a day that never ends,” as he puts it.
Positive mentality What sets Sandy Stuvik apart from every one else in the racing circles in Thailand is not only the fact that he
is the youngest racer in South East Asia, but also his positive mentality towards his career and private life Sandy’s first experience on the race tracks goes back to when he was just only 4 years old. But it was not until he turned 10 when he beat older and more experienced drivers in the Thai National Championship that it became clear to him that he wanted to go all the way to F1. “From that moment I knew this is what I love and this is what I’m going to do”, Sandy says. How long time it will take Sandy to achieve his goal of racing in the F1 race depends not only on his talent, but also depends on the sponsorships available to him. Currently, Sandy has good sponsors but needs a lot more, as most of the sponsorship is being paid by the family. It is a constant concern whether there will be enough funds for next month and season. That will depend on his results, which again adds to the burden shouldered by the young Sandy Stuvik. Sandy having a quick bite with his mother looking on, ensuring he eats something healthy. Treating Cancer at Thai Te W Khampramong Temple in Sakol Nakhon Province in the North East of Thailand treats cancer patients with herbs and meditation. Many get relief during their final months, but equally many leave the temple without any symptoms of cancer, the temple says Photo feature by Soffi Chanchira Larsen
at Khampramong lies in the middle of the dry red soil in the province Pannanikom of Sakon Nakhon, in the north east of Thailand. The only thing that meets you when entering the temple compound is the dry hot land and silence. The only sound is of grasshopper, until you get further inside and a chanting voice on the speakers fills the empty space. The temple is famous for its health unit Arokhayasarn for cancer patients. Here, patients come to stay during the final stages of their lives. The temple offers treatment with alternative medicines - which sometimes cures the patient.
The herbal medicine offered as part of the treatment is liquefied, powdered and in pill form and is given out twice a day.. 12 ScandAsia.Thailand • March 2011
Heinz Kiso, a Swedish doctor of naturopathic medicine, visited the temple in February this year and stayed for one week offering his extensive knowledge in alternative healing. Back in Sweden, he has a Pain Management and Rehabilitation Clinic in Gothenberg, where he utilizes Alternative- & Complementary Medicine. Heinz Kiso’s affection for Thailand goes back to 2004 where he witnessed the Tsunami disaster which changed his life. Today he is a devote Buddhist and typically visits Thailand once every year to work at the Chomthong hospital at Chiang Mai. Visiting the Wat Khampramong this February, Heinz Kiso brought with him among other things some of the equipment that he is a specialist in using in Sweden. At present, the care provided by Arokhayasarn combines alternative therapy, Chinese traditional medicine, and modern Western care. The patients who seek care at Arokhayasarn come from all over the country, and the care outcomes

Pra Ajarn Paponpat Jiradhammo is working as the abbot of the temple and manages the total care system to enable patients from all walks of life to receive holistic care to sustain their lives regardless of their races, religions, genders, or ages. The budget used to provide care to patients at Arokhayasarn comes from direct donations at the temple as well as the donations deposited into the temple’s bank accounts. Accommodations are arranged to sufficiently serve the needs of patients, their family members, and volunteers. Medical supplies including medicines and therapeutic diets for patients, clothes, and bedding are provided for the patients. Herbs library and nursery are set up as a source of learning and a place for experimentation. Necessary medical equipment including ultrasound machine, darkfield microscope, etc.
Mr. Kamsing Ngahom is suffering from cancer in his liver. Dr. Heinz Kiso treats his earlobe in a way similar to reflexology known from foot massage. Suddenly, the treatments gives the patient severe pain in the left leg.
“Working with cancer patients is up and down. There are no perfect solutions, it is like being in the middle of nowhere,” Heinz Kiso says while looking at his patient, 63 year old Mr. Kamsing Ngahom, who has liver cancer.
Treatments on Arokhayasarn is based on alternative medicine and therapy such as yoga, massage and meditation. Love and care are equally important ingredients in the treatment. The day starts at 8.30 am for patients and ends after handling medicine at about 10 pm.
One of the several terms for staying at the temple is to have at least one relative to take care of you. Relatives and staff are all supporting to the daily life. They all contribute to the community. Families grows their own vegetables and so does the temple, to share for the whole community.

PHRA PAPONPATCHARA
A
Paponpatchare Pibanpaknitee graduated in 1966 as Bachelor in Irrigation Engineering from Kasetsart University and worked as Irrigation Engineer at the Royal Irrigation Dept. before in 1968 he entered monk hood.
bbot Paponpatchare Pibanpaknitee has been a monk for 32 years. In 1996 he was diagnosed with the nasopharynx cancer. For a year he had chemo therapy, that harmed his body severely and he could not talk. He decided to stop the chemo therapy and instead used healing herbs from Thailand and meditation therapy. At the same time he changed his lifestyle and food habits. After a year, his condition improved and MRI scans today shows that he is 100 % cured of cancer. This personal experience led him to establish a center for treatment of cancer at his temple. In 2005 the first patients started to get treatments at the temple. The herbal combination is made by the Abbot himself and is the most important element for treating cancer patients in Arokhayasarn. The ingredients is not a secret and according to the abbot, studies from Thammasat University have shown that the herb combinations have a positive effect on killing cancer cells. Originally he planed to have 23 beds only .It ends up with 40 beds at present. The construction of Arokayasal has completely finished in 2006

According to the website of the temple, Arokhayasal is very well known in term of “ Free of Charge Treatment”. The temple has mever charges even a single baht from cancer sufferers. However, there have been donations over Baht 100 million over 6 years during 2005 until Apr 2010. This amount of money has been spent treating approximately 1,900 cancer patients. Half of them have been able to go home and live happily with their family – free of any cancer symptoms. Because of the success and achievement in the care of the ill, Arokhayasal is determined to progress in cancer treatment and healing at non-stop pace. The next aim is to have a research institute to develop the School of Holistic Health Cancer Care in Thailand. Arokhayasarn is considered a place where organizations, agencies, and individuals interested in terminal care can carry out studies and training. Arokhayasarn has also participated in academic conferences and seminars with the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Faculty of Nursing, Khon Kaen University, and many other leading educational institutions in Thailand and abroad.
The Green Turtles U Another reason for decline of turtles is the disappearing of suitable nesting beaches. When tourists take over where turtles would usually hatch
Anu Riihimäki and Maria Koivisto, two marine biologists from Finland, have release three green turtles named Urho, Hilja and Hertta offshore from Phuket. Now their organization “Turtle Watch” follows the the ‘Finnish’ turtles’ whereabouts by satellite. By Joakim Persson
T
hose cute little turtles must have touched the heart of the young Finnish ladies as three of those green turtles were adopted and given the Finnish names Urho, Hilja and Hertta. Now these three are out there somewhere, roaming the seas around Phuket. But they are tagged with satellite tracking devices so their new “mothers” - the turtle watchers - can keep track of their whereabouts. And two more such tagged turtles were released into the ocean in end of January this year. The purpose is to find out more what happens to all turtles that are raised in captivity once they are released in the hundreds every year, in an effort to see what can be done to their dramatic decline in Thai waters.
Turtle Watch Two diving enthusiasts and also marine biologists from Finland, Anu Riihimäki and Maria Koivisto came up with the non-profit organization Turtle Watch after having observed 16 ScandAsia.Thailand • March 2011
the demise of the turtle population on many locations when diving in Thailand. “I used to work here as a diving instructor, on Koh Racha. There were some breeding turtles there and hatched turtles kept in tanks. And I came back to Finland and started thinking of doing something more interesting and about what would happen to the turtles once they are released to the ocean. So that’s basically how this came to be and then we started a collaboration with the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC),” explains Anu. Their goal is to actively inform tourists about sustainable tourism, especially regarding diving and snorkelling. They also spread information about endangered species of the seas, especially sea turtles since the migration patterns of the green turtle is their pilot study.
Will they survive? Their main concern was that the captive-raised turtles have never left their breeding tanks or even seen a live fish, so they might not

necessarily do well in the deep blue. Only from PMBC 300 green turtles raised in captivity are released each year. Breeding and releasing turtles into the sea is common practice in Thailand, (started way back in 1947 when commercial fishing of turtles was banned) also because of Buddhist belief that releasing them brings good luck. Towards the end of the twentieth century the turtles not only were facing exploitation of their shells, eggs and meat but new fishing methods, ocean pollution (particularly plastic bags) and changes in the traditional nesting beaches. “There’s a lot of information about migrating adult turtles but very little info exist about the young turtles and actually their first couple of years are called the lost years, because they tend to passively migrate with the ocean currents. No one knows where they go,” says Maria. No scientific evidence of how this captive breeding affects turtles exist up to date so acquiring more information on how juvenile turtles migrate and what kind of habitats
they prefer enables better protection.
Where do they go? The ongoing survey by Turtle Watch follows the lives of green turtles upon release to see how they survive, how they migrate and if they behave in the same way as “natural” turtles. Small, matchboxsized satellite tags are attached to the turtles’ upper shells. “Our intention is to collect a big set of data so we have reliable results, so first of all we want to expand the data that we get from these captive breed turtles to see how they behave and where they go. After that it would be very interesting to compare them with turtles that are just naturally born, and turtles of the same age.” Eventually the study will show wether or not captive breeding is a good conservational tool for sea turtles. “At least we’ve got valuable, new information at this stage: that they survive after the release into the sea.” And yet there is high risk of
mortality throughout their whole lifespan. The whole idea of breeding them is to release them when they have reached an age of one year, because by then few predators eat them at all. The human is the biggest threat to them: fish nets, the vanishing of suitable under water habitats etc. “Another reason for decline of turtles is the disappearing of suitable nesting beaches. When tourists take over where turtles would usually hatch,” Maria points out.
Big ambitions While they are still spending most of the year back in Finland (doing research work and Maria finishing her PhD) they have clear ambitions for their organisation as they find it much more challenging and interesting to work internationally. “You can do more for the nature here, with lots of endangered animals. And there are still so many things that you could do better and actually make a difference if you just figured out the way and got people working in that direction,” says Anu.
“We are trying to start a project here about sustainable fishing, where we could promote turtle and dolphin-friendly fishing gear. And also bring together hotels and restaurants willing to promote sustainable fish products from fishermen using such gear,” says Maria. “We would promote the fish they catch, that does not hurt the turtles and sell to the hotels and work as a link between the fishermen and the hotels so they could get more money out of it,” says Anu. And once they have set up Turtle Watch as a Thai organization they want to raise the ecological awareness among visitors, working via travel agents and operators and educate them with info that can be passed on to tourists. They will provide materials about endangered sea turtles and other marine species and promote sustainable tourism in Phuket. “We hope to find good places where to take tourists and how to bring them there and which local travel agencies to cooperate with that take environmental concern.”

H.N. Andersen: Myths
H. N. Andersen as a young man.
The founder of ØK, (EAC), Hans Niels Andersen (1852-1937) is a fascinating and impressive figure in Danish and Siamese shipping and industrial history, but I have been hesitant writing about him. The man, his life and career is still highly disputed among historians and journalists; the risk of mistakes and unfairness is big. However, on the occasion of EAC’s departure from Thailand, I was, once more, confronted with the diehard myth and suggestion that Andersen had earned his first money by running ‘Oriental Hotel’ as a brothel. This myth should be put to rest once and for all. By Flemming Winther Nielsen

I
will try to clarify how it all started back in 1879, when Andersen registered with the Danish Consulate in Bangkok; this will show his talent for getting trusted in money-matters, only with his business ideas as security. H.N. Andersen showed the most remarkable talent to raise funds and borrow money. From the story of these early days also details about ‘Oriental Hotel’ with its 12 rooms will be provided. Among the financial contributors is found a cantankerous and distrustful Danish doctor and Pharmacy owner, who earned a fortune in the mangrove swamp that was then Bangkok; no sanitation, cholera and dysentery flourishing. Also the Siamese Minister of Foreign Affairs contributed and became a close friend, not to mention a Scottish businessman who provided him and a partner with 40.000 $’s to buy the hotel and soon thereafter start up ‘The Oriental Provision Store’. The Danish Commodore of the marine participated. King Chulalongkorn, (Rama V) was a keen supporter; he granted a teak-logging concession and heartily welcomed EAC, introducing a direct shipping line between Siam and Europe. In later years the King was several times a travelling guest onboard an EAC ship.

After sailing for some years, Andersen arrived, as mentioned, in Bangkok 1879 and was hired as mate on the bark ‘Thoon Kramon’. Of formal qualifications he had none. ‘Thoon Kramon’ was owned by the King and one of the best constructed tall-ships ever. Originally rigged as a tea clipper, later down rigged to a three masted bark. The German house of ‘Pickenpack, Thies and Co.’ operated the ship. By then Andersen was already convinced that there would be a huge market for teak in Europe, especially the shipbuilding industry needed hardwood for building accommodations and laying decks. The crippling financial and economic world crisis that started in 1873 was nearing the end and new tonnage was being built. In 1883 he was given the command of ‘Thoon Kramon’. Together with his friend and later brother-in-law Captain V.Guldberg, who had the ship-master certificates needed for insurance, they prepared to set sails. Andersen persuaded a timber company to deliver the teak on credit. The ship fully loaded then sailed with Liverpool as its destination, but it took the long voyage around Cape the Good Hope, thereby avoiding the substantial fee for use of the Suez Canal. The cargo was sold with almost 100% net profit and Andersen had a part.
It was customary at that time, that income from the long and risky voyages was shared, for example: 1/3, 1/3, 1/3. One part for the owner, one for the ship (and crew), one for the captain. They sailed back with coal for Commodore Richelieu’s marine, also very well paid. Earlier the foreign trading companies, especially ‘The Borneo Company’ had sold teak to other Asian countries, without much profit; they didn’t believe in the European market – after the triumph of Thoon Kramon they did and the teak trade started in earnest.
Oriental Hotel In 1884 Andersen got a partner in the respected Captain Peter Andersen (died only 39 years old in 1893, buried at the Protestant Graveyard in Bangkok). They bought ‘Oriental Hotel’; the partners seemingly invested what they had, but that was far from enough and from the mean and humorless Scottish General Manager of the ‘Borneo Company’ Mr. C.S. Leckie, also later Danish Consul, they borrowed 40.000 $ company money (this sum according to Eggers-Lura p.55; in case, a huge amount!). Then they could start to renovate and upgrade the hotel. It seems that H.N. Andersen took over an exist-
ing store together with Peter Kinch (see Scandasia online, Oct. 2010) on the hotel premises and started ‘Oriental Provision Store’ two-three years later. He could then fill the place with expensive goods for the Siamese Marine, sailors and landlubbers, also luxury articles –in demand by the court. The ‘Oriental’ was the one and only real hotel in Bangkok. With that also the restaurant, ‘Bamboo Bar’, a bakery and a factory producing clean mineral water, furthermore a fleet of taxi-boats. The guests were mainly young sailors and officers waiting while their ships were discharging or loading cargo. They had Siamese girlfriends, often in long lasting relationships; they stayed with the sailor and also took care of all things practical. Thus, with or without ill intentions the word brothel was spread in Denmark. At that time, the only reference people had was the kind of brothels the family fathers knew -in Denmark. The classical European style had an owner and pimps, managing a ‘fleet of small ships’ (girls), but such a model did not exist then in Siam and it hardly exists even now. Agreements were made privately between the two individuals. In ‘Thai-Danish Relations’ Anders Tandrup (p.149) puts it this way: “…to come close to the first million, he would have needed 250 girls, en-
gaged every night during the period he owned the hotel. Nonsense”. Had it been a ‘goldmine’, no need for raising capital. The hotel had furthermore, as mentioned, only 12 rooms. H.N. and Peter Andersen rebuilt the hotel and made it fashionable as the place to go. Even the King visited it. The sailors slowly found other accommodations in the area and new types of guests occupied the rooms. During the hotel period H.N. Andersen also took up the role as land developer and contractor. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, ‘Kromatah’ is the title in Siamese, was from the highly influential Bunnag family. Meanwhile ‘Kromatah’ also became the name under which this respected gentleman was commonly known. He and H.N. Andersen became good friends, a relationship that lasted until Kromatah died as a very old man in 1913, having resigned as minister in 1893. He owned much land along New Road, (Charoen Krung Road) around the hotel, The General Post Office and the French Embassy. Most was swamp and mangrove. The two made a deal. Andersen filled in and developed the land, Oriental Avenue was laid out. On the avenue Andersen built quite many villas (locally called ‘bungalows’). The houses

were of high quality and also with very classical proportions and décor. Two of them are still there to be seen, one a Chinese restaurant. After finishing the work the two partners shared the profit 50/50. Kromatah was one of the very few people that Andersen had a lifelong and unbroken affection for. The same cannot be said about Dr. Sophus Deuntzer, whose merits are described in my article about Consul Frederik Koebke (Scandasiagoogle). How Andersen managed to persuade him to part with a major part of his fortune is a mystery, but nevertheless, he did. The loan was converted to shares in EAC and the good doctor’s brother, the Danish professor, jurist and politician J.H. Deuntzer, got a seat on the Board of Directors, so the money involved must have been substantial. The investment bore fruit. Commodore, later admiral, Richelieu of the Siamese Marine and Andersen had a close friendship and business relationship these early years; as described in two articles (Scandasia-google). Later they had severe disagreements, but Richelieu also invested in EAC, “he bought 150 shares, nominal 1.000 Crowns each, at 100, paid 100.000 cash and for the remaining 50.000 he delivered a shipload of teak” (professor Kaarsted p.118, my translation). He had a seat on the EAC board until his death.
The seeds and the harvest The 20th of March 1897 the company named ‘ØK’ was founded in Copenhagen. This also represented Andersen’s final success and hard won triumph in ‘fundraising’. Isak Glueckstadt, the financier and Managing Director of ‘Landmandsbanken’, the biggest bank in Northern Europe, “accepted Andersen’s business plan, and in January it became clear, that the capital of 3.5 mill. Crowns was secured, added to that was 2 million as bank credit” (Kaarsted s. 118, my translation). ØK developed with the most impressive speed as a shipping line, but from the time of ‘Andersen & Co.’ the company had the seeds of a conglomerate as it was involved in much diversified businesses. Partly the origins of all this has been dealt with above, and soon the teak concession in Phrae, Northern Siam was added as ‘The jewel in the Crown’. In an advertisement the new company presented itself as: Timber Merchants, Sawmillers, Ricemillers, Importers and Exporters, Shipowners: Bangkok-Europe, direct lines. Managing agent for ‘The Siam Steam Navigation Co. ltd’. East and West Coast Mail Service etc. I recently visited the compound and former warehouses of EAC on the southern end of Charoun Krung Road; invited by the Thai owners of buildings and land. The area is not

open for the public. I was almost shocked by the size of the whole complex, it is enormous. It was a serious eye opener. I knew well that EAC in its heydays was a big company, but didn’t realize that it was that big! Huge warehouse buildings, maybe fifty; row after row, forming 3 ‘streets’. But searching for the need of the enormous capacity gave some results. In for example April 1912 the company advertised the schedule of the West and East Coast Service Bangkok-Singapore. Nine steamers were involved; departure and arrival TWICE A WEEK. En route, the ships would call on many smaller locations, such as Koh Lak, Bandon, Koh Samui, Lacon, Pattani etc. Two ships sailed the East Coast Service, the route was much shorter. The coastal service was organized as a subsidiary of EAC, and started 1899; so now we have some of the explanation for all the building capacity. As early as 1901-2 the regular service Europe-Singapore-Bangkok started. Combined cargo and passenger ships were sailing the route,
they became known as ‘The White Liners’ of EAC, of course they also carried thousands of tons of cargo for the Siamese Market. Then the teak was the bulk cargo back. The oldest warehouses are classical Danish style, red-brown bricks laid in the traditional bond. They seem untouched by time and on the arches it is still possible to read EAC’s name. Business developed fast. More and more warehouses were added, now of a simpler concrete construction. In 2011 they are all empty; the containers have taken over long ago. Throughout the first 65 years of the 20. Century the company grew extensively. At the same time it was encompassed with a very special aura and affection. I begin to understand why. For all the employees it must have been a proud sight to see the white painted M/S Selandia, the first ocean going vessel provided with diesel engines, sailing up the river to Bangkok on its maiden voyage 1912, carrying high ranking passengers and loaded with 4.500 tons of cement.

Life is a
BEACH
Go for that beach vacation! Get high on the smell of the ocean, the sound of the waves. Rediscover your life... By Gregers Moller
L
iving in Thailand, beach vacations are not linked to any special season. Anytime you feel like it you can just grab your beach bag and go for a single day, a long weekend or a full week of basking in the sun, swimming in the ocean, building castles with the kids in the sand and indulge in great, fresh seafood in the evening.
We are so spoiled!
Families flock to Thailand from all over the world for those all inclusive resorts that offer watersports, family activities, elaborate pools and even on-site water parks. At some resorts, kids’ programs are outstanding, with separate activities for many different age groups, plus teen programs and nurseries. Living here, we often forget that these opportunities are right here on our own door step, so much more affordable and with a choice so much wider than if you are sitting with a catalogue back home in Scandinavia. 22 ScandAsia.Thailand • March 2011
Cure for workaholics
For many expat families living in Thailand, one serious reason to go for a beach vacation is the fact that the bread winner - often the father of the family - is quite hard working. He will often spend up to eighty hours working each week and although his income is appreciated by his wife and children, they often need his attention and affection more. This is where a beach vacation is better than any other form of recreation because it gets you away from the routines of life. There is no need to talk on cell phones, check emails, or be running here and there every evening to attend meetings. A beach vacation is the perfect getaway for couples and families that need to relax and be unrestricted in time together. You can spend days on end simply enjoying the beach, the water, making love in the bathtub or explore other ways of spending time together. There is perhaps nothing as therapeutic for a family than extended time together.
There is perhaps nothing as therapeutic for a family than extended time together.
Extra tips
Small tips can be useful for added pleasure. Avoid “project building”. The more spontaneous a beach vacation comes, the better. The formula is simple: Expect less, appreciate more. Check your health insurance. If you’ll be boating, riding a jet ski, parasailing, diving or participating in other potentially dangerous water sports, ask your health insurance if you are covered should you get hurt. Coastal living is great. Why not shop a bit around at see what kind of house or condominium you could buy or rent. Just in case you should ever actually take that “Thaime out” which is so fun to play with. Make a list of “next time we get here”. Then start doing them one by one. Live life like you got one!
Packing list
Here is a quick list of things to pack in that “spontaneous” beach bag of yours: Sun block or tanning cream Lip balm with sunscreen Extra swim wear (two, per person) Aqua shoes Swim goggles Sunglasses Shorts and a sarong Beach & water toys Light reading material Ear plugs if your child needs them when swimming Insect repellent Afterbite, for insect bites Band aids Birth control Needle and thread Plastic food container.

Where to Eat?
Seafood Paradise Thailand is known for its amazing seafood with fresh dishes you’ll see nowhere else in the world. Not only does it have some of the best restaurants, the food comes in prices that will excite even the most jaded traveler. By Kristene Silva Marie
I
f you love seafood but don’t want to empty your wallet to eat it, here’s your chance. Seafood restaurants in Thailand are extremely affordable, but drool-worthy. Come supper time on the beach, you won’t have to walk far to find that you are spoilt for choices with the variety of seafood dishes available.
Yum Talay
One dish that can surely awaken your taste buds is the yum talay. This dish boasts a playful mix of flavors with the natural sweetness of fresh seafood, breezy notes of cilantro and mint, and the sharp accent of lime juice against a little sizzle of spice. Its name comes from the word yum referring to the action of combining an array of hot and tangy ingredients, and talay, a Thai word for ocean.
Red Curry Sauce Scallops
Another interesting dish to try out is the Thai Red Curry Sauce Scallops. This dish is fragrant and pleasantly spicy. It is either served with a dipping sauce or mixed in the red curry. The interesting blend of spices and herbs in this dish which accentuates its taste makes it an excellent treat at family get-togethers.
Too spicy?
Most people distinguish Thai food by its spicy, tangy taste, which most of the time accompanies the dish. However, those who prefer a non-spicy spread are not to feel left out for there are many mild dishes available as well. Using more herbs than spices, the fresh Thai seafood selection is made to be even more delicious and satisfyingly healthy.

What to Do?
Big Game Fishing in Thailand P Do you want to know how it feels when the fastest fish in the world takes you bait, swims away at rocket speed making your fishing reel sound like a siren tearing the line out of it? Look no further. Phuket is one of the best places in the world to take up the fight with the sailfish. By Steen Poulin Nielsen
huket is the place to go if you want some quality big game fishing. Species as sailfish, tuna, wahoo, dorado, queenfish and marlin are living in the deep blue waters of the Andaman Sea and several fishing tour operators are ready for costumers. The fishing is good all year round but in the monsoon season from June to August the boats will mainly fish around the small islands, Racha Noi and Racha Yai, just one hour of sailing from Chalong Bay. In the rest of the year the boats can take you further. Phuket has a number of professional fishing tour operators offering day charter and liveaboards to longer destinations like the Similans.
Where to go
There is good fishing at the west coast of Phuket not far from the shore. Racha Yai is a sailfish hot spot and smaller marlins can be caught here as well. To find the larger black marlins, the ones between 100 kg and 300 kg, try fishing at the continental shelf drop-off about 90 km west of Phuket. If sharks are what you are looking for there will the chance for a tiger, hammerhead or bull shark.
Catch and release
Increasing awareness on how sustainable fishing can help taking care of natural resources makes Catch & Release more and more popular in Phuket. When the catch is billfish like sailfish and marlin, the fish will be landed and after a short photo Sailfish are predominately blue to gray in color and have a characteristic erectile dorsal fin known as a sail, which often stretches the entire length of the back. Another notable characteristic is the elongated bill, resembling that of the swordfish and marlins. They are therefore described as billfish in sport fishing circles. Sailfish feed on the surface or at middepths on smaller fish and squid. Sailfish have been clocked at speeds of up to 110 km/h, which is the highest speed reported in a fish. Generally, sailfish do not grow to more than 3 m in length and rarely weigh over 90 kg. Sailfish are known for their incredible jumps. 28 ScandAsia.Thailand • March 2011
opportunity the catch will be released unharmed. Also sharks will be released.
Phuket is still undiscovered
Dedicated big game anglers goes to Costa Rica, Guatemala, Broome, Cape Bowling Green, and Watamu for sailfish fishing. Phuket is not yet recognized as a hot spot despite the fact sailfish fishing here is a good as it gets. This lack of world-wide publicity leaves the fishing to the holiday anglers while the dedicated big game fishermen still remains unaware of what they are missing.
Pick your man
To be ready for a nice day at the sea and maybe for the catch of your life you will need nothing more than to find a reliable fishing tour operator and make an appointment. On board there will be complete fishing tackle and a professional crew ready to take care of you.

Black Lotus Affordable
Many customers ask specifically if the shared facilities will be completed on time. So Lars Castenlund and his partner has decided to complete them ahead of schedule. At the top is the reception and minimart - below the big pool with the restaurant in the back.
The luxury features within the Black Lotus concept ensures a maximum level of leisure and relaxation at a price never before seen for a resort of this high standard. By Gregers Moller

share in Black Lotus is the perfect solution for the many Scandinavian and other foreigners who return to Hua Hin every year to enjoy their vacation. A one week share in a family house with two bedrooms and your own swimming pool will cost around 320.000 Baht - and then it’s your for the rest of your life. In many ways, your Black Lotus house will also be more personal to return to than if you rent a suite in a traditional resort. Your own books and CD’s will be put back on your shelf along with other items, that are kept in a personal store room, before you arrive. Lars Castenlund, who owns the project along with a greek partner, believes the shared ownership fits better with the vacation pattern of

the many Scandinavian’s returning to Hua Hin year after year. “Many decide to buy their own house but then they also have to pay for maintenance of it during all the months you don’t live in it,” Lars Castenlund says. However, for people who believe they will actually live in their house most of the year, Lars can offer them exactly the same house just accross the internal road inside GreenScape for 5,9 mill. Thai Baht.
The ownership model Black Lotus is an integrated part of Green Scape - a larger area of 17 rai a few minutes south west of the town centre in Hua Hin. The land is owned by a Thai registered company with Lars and his Greek patners wives and other trusted Thai partners as majority share holders.
Within Black Lotus, each house is owned by a separate company registered in Hong Kong. Each of these companies rent the land on which the house is built from Green Scape on three year contracts to be rolled over an endless number of times. Keeping the rent period this short makes it possible to save fees that would otherwise have to be paid to the land department, Lars explains. Each Hong Kong company has 52 shares. One for each of the weeks in the year. When you buy a share, you buy a specific week in the house. That week - or those weeks - the house is yours. “We keep four weeks per house for yearly repairs,” Lars explains. Black Lotus will consist of 26 villas in different sizes. Three are already built and all the next are soon to follow - you will not be living on a construction site for the next ten years. The last of the villas are set for completion in 2012. All villas come fully decorated and include a large flat-screen TV with a surround sound set. this yearly overhaul as well as the daily maintenance incl. pool and garden work.
Benefits of not being the owner Not being the owner of the house yourself, there are several benefits. For a start you don’t have to worry about paying any bills. The Internet bill, the Satellite TV bill, the water and electricity bill, the insurance bill, not to mention the housekeeping twice a week, the gardening service, and the pool cleaner. It is all taken care of for you. If you change your mind, there are various ways you can swap your weeks with owners of other weeks within Black Lotus. There are also online websites, where timeshare holders around the world swap their weeks. That way, your week
in Black Lotus might one year bring you to the Caribbean and next year to Teneriffe before you the third year decide to come back to Black Lotus again. And should you eventually wish to sell you share, it is not unreasonable to expect that it will sell for at least the same price that it costs today, considering the rising real estate prices in the Hua Hin area. But this is a speculation you share with all house owners anywhere in he world. At worst, whatever you get will just have made your already cheap vacations cheaper.
Shared facilities? Check! One of the most common worries of the customers is if the shared facilities of the project will be built last - or if they will never be completed
as promised, Lars Castenlund says. To counter that, he and his partner decided early on to build the reception, the restaurant, the mini-mart, the fitness centre and the shared large pool along with the first houses. They are currently shaping up and will be ready in four months for an official opening. Next to the shared pool, restaurant and shop a number of single bedroom units are also build. They are very attractive not only because of their prime location but also because they are sold at only 27.000 kroner or 140.000 Baht per week. When it comes down to it, Black Lotus in Hua Hin is an exciting project and worth a serious consideration if you like a bit of luxury in your vacation and want to cut out the hassle of a complete ownership.
ars Castenlund lives himself in one of the houses that belong to GreenScape. In the neighboring house lives his Greek partner. When ScandAsia visited him, his 10 year old son from his previous Danish marriage was playing in the pool with the son of his current wife, Namfon, who is a Thai. Together they have an 11 month and a baby boy on its way. Four times a year, the 39 year old Dane flies back to Denmark on business trips to make strategic plans for his successful Danish dating website scor.dk and several other websites that he owns worldwide, including the Thai site dating.co.th. These websites are where Lars made the fortune which now enables him to take on a major project like GreenScape and Black Lotus. Lars is educated in insurance business and worked with an insurance company in Denmark for eight years. He was 26 years old when in 1997 he ventured into the online dating business. Lars Castenlund is big with all the physics of a body builder, but “these days I don’t work out as much as I guess I should,” he laughs.

High Quality Hotels Puts the World Map Jonas Sjöstedt, General Manager at Centra Ashlee Hotel Patong - is an ‘old hand’ on Phuket. In this interview, Jonas Sjöstedt shares his knowledge of the island. Among others how to spend an unforgettable day with wonderful seafood and a beach for yourself. By Joakim Persson
B
etween now and when hotelier Jonas Sjöstedt first arrived to Phuket back in 1998 as a charter tour guide, the island’s tourism and overall development has been dramatic. Recently the active Swede was promoted to General Manager at Centra Ashlee Hotel Patong which opened in December as the first property under the new Centra brand owned by Centara Hotels & Resorts. Jonas Sjöstedt used to work at Jiva Resort & Spa on Kata beach which was popular with many Swedes. When Centara took over that resort they also got the Jonas Sjostedt as part of the inventories. “The management wanted all staff to be able to stay. So Centara got the furniture, cars etc. - and me - along with the take-over,” Jonas laughs. For him, the take-over meant an important step forward with the all the career opportunities that only a large hotel operator and brand can offer. His first move forward was to Centara Karon Resort (previously hotel Islandia) during two “constructive years” - which meant a move from 150 to 335 rooms.
Go out with a long tail boat to an island called Rang Yai. If you are not coming in high season it’s quite possible you can have a beach for yourself. And prices there are often half of what you find on the west side of Phuket. That’s on the top ten list of things one should do! 34 ScandAsia.Thailand • March 2011
Four star Patong Patong these days, he agrees, is more city-like and more four to five star level. “Scandinavian charter used to be three-star, but has gone fourstar,” he says about the hotel scene. “But here there is enormous difference between certain three- and four star hotels. Patong has become too commercial as it has grown too
much. But quality will always sell, so certain things will always be there.” His hotel, Centra Ashlee Hotel Patong was supposed to be threestar and is being sold as such, while the rooms are actually of higher quality. There, Jonas is looking forward to a good number of Scandinavian guests. “For next high season at least half the hotel is allotted to Scandinavian agents. But it’s a bit mixed in Patong and we have to see how this concept works.” The large rooftop with pool, bar and dining lounge he thinks will be a strong selling point. Throughout the years Jonas has obviously met many Scandinavians who have also become friends. “Unfortunately, most of them come during high or peak season when we are most busy and have the least free time. But it’s still possible to have a chat etc.”
Shopping at Jungceylon For shopping he gives credit to Jungceylon, the largest shopping centre on the island. Also refurbishment: After the tsunami many renovated and the beach walk has been given a face lift. And they got rid of some of the small roads with corrugated tin roof shacks. And on Bangla Road, you have increasingly seen larger brands taking over. When the rental costs go up the soi bars must move to less attractive plots.” “I would say it’s being cleaned up. And about the complaints: if Patong should be the worst beach, one must be quite happy because after all it’s still very nice given the
Patong on
high visitor numbers.” “Phuket is also seeing new additions all the time, so there’s always something happening. And I think one can see an upsurge regarding nightlife; partly regarding disc jockeys. Phuket has a place on the world map now, many well-known DJ:s are coming here. People come for these attractions. That has not worked previously, so that’s a trend. And it’s easier to fly here nowadays than before, with more options.”
High quality of life What makes them return again year after year, he believes, is that one has an extremely high life quality on Phuket - provided one has the right knowledge where to stay and go etc. “There are many Scandinavian restaurants and also many tourist traps, but you can still find local food on the street corner for 50 baht and can take the lunch to the beach. It’s good anytime; all people are friendly and it’s always warm. And if you miss shopping there is a centre with V.I.P cinema 30 minutes away where you can also shop exquisite wine, cheese etc. And 25 minutes down to the other side, Chalong bay, one can take a long-tail boat to any island beach and often be on one’s own. The possibilities are there.”
Jonas’ personal tip People know Phuket well; often everyone knows someone who has been here and has suggestions. Also newspapers are writing enormously and there are blogs on what to see
and do, he adds. Jonas can also disclose one of his special recommendations to guests - an on-water dining experience perfect for seafood lovers on the east coast. “It’s in Lam Hin, north of Phuket Town,” he explains. “From the small harbour you take a long-tail boat out at sea to some rafts. And around those rafts you have large fish farms, where you simply point out what you want to have on the table; crabs, grouper, clams etc. Then they cook it and you sit under salas out at sea.” “You can go out there at lunch and then continue with the long tail boat to an island called Rang Yai and if not coming in high season it’s quite possible you can have a beach for yourself. And prices there are often half of what you find on the west side. That’s a top ten thing one should do.”
Keyword: Independence As Jonas has just started his new position on his home turf he is likely to stay some years. And then? “Well, I’ve always had the idea to move here and settle here. My keyword in life is independence. The dream is to run something on one’s own in the future; that’s my goal. And the path to reach there - I am flexible, not ready to sign off on planning to spend the rest of my life here. Of course, if getting the offer to go elsewhere and it feels right, then - why not! I would like to return to Brazil. And Vietnam feels attractive. But returning here in the future could then be interesting.” March 2011 • ScandAsia.Thailand 35

• Several slices of fresh bread • Unsalted butter • 1 head Boston or butter lettuce • Good-quality mayonnaise (about 2 tablespoons) • 6 to 8 large cooked shrimp • Thinly sliced lemon • Watercress or dill for garnish • Hard-cooked eggs Butter several slices of bread, cutting them in half if slices are very large. Place thin slices of boiled egg on one side of the bread. Top each with leafy lettuce so that it extends over sides of bread. Top the lettuce with generous lump of about one teaspoon of mayonnaise. Place two large shrimps beside each other on top of the mayonnaise so it is held in place. Put another dab of mayonnaise on top, followed by thin twist of lemon and sprig of watercress or dill for color.
