FOREWORD
Welcome to the
Thai-Sweden Review Message by Kenneth Radencrantz President Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce
Dear Members,
Time flies and a new year is knocking on the door. Looking back is not particularly elevating from a business point of view. USA is still having major financial problems and business is slow. It is the same situation within the European Union, where Greece is close to bankruptcy. China seems to be one of the very few economic enjoyments with a GDP increase of 8%. Southeast Asia is doing quite well with 4-6% increase, compared to USA and Europe with mere 1-2% increase. We have to be careful, though, when we make comparisons of this kind. If you jump 100 cm and increase 10%, you jump 110 cm, not particularly good. It depends on, who you are. If you jump 200 cm and make an increase of 10%, you jump 220 cm, very good and of championship class. In order to just increase 10 cm, the first jumper must increase 10% and the other one only 5%. The challenge is, how long you can sustain an increase of 10%. It’s time for us to look forward. Most surveys and forecasts indicate that the future lies in Asia, in particular in China and India, but also in the upcoming Asean Economic Community. In fact AEC may become the third largest market in the world, at least in terms of population. Asia may see GDP increases of 4-8%, depending on country and willingness to adjust to increased market opportunities. The US and European economies have passed the peak of its current growth cycle. The returns from monetary stimulus are diminishing and a growth rate of only 1-3% is expected. We live in Asia and we support the aims of the AEC to create a common economic community. It will provide a range of improvements for ASEAN citizens and businesses. We sincerely hope that the Thai Government will support the key areas of the AEC agreements: Free flow of Goods, Services, Investments, Capital and Labour. Within this context, the TSCC as well as all other chambers of commerce in Thailand would encourage the Thai government to fast track implementation of the agreed AEC policies and ensure the various ministries and departments work towards developing efficient and transparent regulations and procedures for business operators. We are of the opinion that any company, incorporated in Thailand and doing business in Thailand, regardless of its shareholding, should have equal treatment to any other Thai company in line with general free trade principles. For many years the TSCC has taken active steps to support members with information, access to tools to understand what the AEC can offer for the benefit of their businesses and the Thai economy. Our job is to advocate ministries, support and assist TSCC members. Now and in the future. Best regards Kenneth Radencrantz

DR. SURAPONG ON THAI SWEDISH RELATIONS
Dr. Surapong on
Thai Swedish Relations Dr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, says in this rare Q&A session with Thai Sweden Review, that his Ministry is working on having Thai citizens exempted from visa to the Schengen area and that he appreciates Sweden’s support for this. Dr. Surapong also mentions that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra recently assigned him to act as a coordinator to work with concerned agencies to improve regulation – including visa or stay and work permits – to help facilitate foreign businesses and investment in Thailand.

Visa free travel to Schengen
Sweden supports visa free travel for Thai citizens to Sweden and the European Schengen area. Sweden’s former Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Lennart Linner, publicly stated this position when he paid his farewell visit last May to the previous Foreign Minister of Thailand. Please elaborate Thailand’s position on this matter. For example, what actions has MFA taken to promote lifting the visa requirement for Thais to the Schengen area? What is your take on EU’s response to this initiative to move Thailand to the list of countries that enjoy visa free travel to the Schengen area? What can Sweden do more to achieve a positive outcome? Have you discussed a bilateral solution to this problem with Sweden? Dr. Surapong: “Thailand has unilaterally granted visa exemption and visa on arrival for shortterm stay in Thailand for EU citizens. We, therefore, hope that holders of Thai ordinary passports would be exempted from Schengen visa requirements and have approached our relevant EU partners to consider this.” “We hope the Schengen members will see the benefit of easing travel requirements for Thai business people and Thai tourists by waiving Schengen visa requirements. We are appreciative that Sweden supports the waiving of visa requirements for Thais which is crucial because every member of the Schengen area will have a say on this matter.”
Joint Plan of Action
This spring Sweden´s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said that a renewed Joint Plan of Action (JPOA) between Sweden and Thailand is being composed and expected to be signed in the near future, according to press release from Sweden’s MFA, following Mr. Bildt’s
visit to Thailand. What is the status of the renewed JPOA, and what is new in it compared to the original JPOA that was signed in January 2006? Dr. Surapong: “I had the pleasure to receive H.E. Mr. Carl Bildt last April, and we discussed about the importance of the new ThaiSwedish Joint Plan of Action. This new Joint Plan of Action is an important tool that will drive our already excellent bilateral relations to another level.” “The Thai side has finished reviewing the first Draft of the Joint Plan of Action and sent it to the Swedish side. We expect to receive comments from the Swedish side soon.”
Regulations hampering business
The Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce has observed that every short-time business visitor to Thailand breaks the law. Why? Because formally you need a work permit to make a business visit. Why can Thailand not extend specific business visas for these visiting business guests and scrap a regulation that is almost never enforced? Dr. Surapong: “The Government is well aware of some inconveniences faced by foreign business people wishing to do business in Thailand. The Prime Minister herself has recently assigned me to act as a coordinator to work with concerned agencies to improve regulatory regimes - whether they be visa or stay and work permits - and help facilitate foreign businesses and investment in our country. “The issue you raise was indeed one of the issues addressed in a meeting on 25 October 2012 that we had with relevant authorities, namely the Ministry of Interior, Immigration Bureau, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau

and especially the Ministry of Labour (MOL). As the issue on a work permit requirement for a short-time business visitor is governed by the Working of Aliens Act B.E. 2551 (2008), the Department of Employment of MOL, who is the sole agency responsible for this area, has proposed to seek legal advice from the Council of State on how to resolve this impediment to the business environment in Thailand.” “In the meantime, there is an exception to the regulation which means that a work permit is not required for business visitors who need to enter Thailand to conduct necessary and urgent business for a period of not exceeding 15 days. However, they have to inform MOL of the purpose by fax or at the MOL counter open 24 hours at the Suvarnabhumi Airport.”
Ragunda memorial
Sweden has seen an increasing number of Thai students over the past few years that pursue education at university level in Sweden. Also, Swedish students in Thailand are growing in numbers. How does the MFA view this development and what would you like to do to further promote Swedish-Thai relations in the field of education?
King Chulalongkorn Memorial in Bispgården, Ragunda, Sweden, was erected in the late 1990s to commemorate HM King Rama V’s visit to the small community of Bispgården in Ragunda, northern Sweden on 19 July 1897. The pavilion is open mid-May to mid-September and with the exception of 23 October very few events are held off-season. This means that it is idle for a long part of the year. Is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs engaged in a dialogue with Ragunda municipality, who maintains the memorial, on how to further develop the memorial with more facilities, for conferences, library, etc.?
Dr. Surapong: “We recognize the importance of peopleto-people connectivity and encourage people to people exchanges with every

country. We are happy to see more Swedish students studying in Thailand.” “However, since the end of 2011 when Sweden began to collect tuition fees from foreign students, we have seen a dramatic decline in the number of Thai students going to Sweden. We believe that this situation would improve and lead to greater exchanges between our peoples if the Swedish government grants more scholarships to Thai students in fields that Sweden has expertise such as science and technology, alternative energy, and design.”

our Ambassador to Stockholm. First a ceremony and cultural festival on 19 July to commemorate the Royal visit of King Chulalongkorn to Ragunda in 1897. Second a ceremony to lay wreath and pay tribute to King Chulalongkorn on 23 October, the day of his passing away.” “While the Ragunda municipality plays a major role in maintaining the Pavilion, the Thai Foreign Ministry is seeking to provide financial support for a restoration project of the Pavilion.”
Close contacts
What Thai-Swedish events will the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participate in over the coming 12 months? Are there bilateral or multilateral areas where you would welcome a dialogue with Sweden? Dr. Surapong: “Thailand and Sweden have long enjoyed close and cordial bilateral relations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is constantly engaged in dialogue with the Swedish Embassy in Bangkok. We collaborate on a wide range of activities, and our Embassy in Stockholm works closely with the Swedish Foreign Ministry to enhance our already excellent bilateral relations as well. At the multilateral level, Thailand and Sweden also enjoy great cooperation and mutual support. For example, both sides have exchanged votes in various UN elections.”

ASTRAZENECA THAILAND “TAKING CONTROL OF OUR FUTURE”
AstraZeneca Thailand Taking Control of Our Future When Dr Reginald Seeto, the Executive Vice-President of Corporate Development and Strategy for MedImmune, the worldwide biologics business of multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca (AZ), was asked in which of the 60+ countries where the company has operations would he like to serve an expatriate assignment as the Country President, without hesitation, he replied “Thailand”. Now, having been in the position for almost two years Dr Seeto – or Reg as he prefers to be called – speaks about his time in Thailand, his achievements with AZ Thailand, and what lies ahead for the company. Since taking over as Country President, what have you achieved? Thailand is a challenging market. The day I arrived, we were already behind budget by more than 10 per cent, the market was declining and with increasing cost containment. However this was not always the case and from 2000-2007 there was significant high double digit growth for the market. Over the last five years (2008-12) the dynamics have changed and continue to be tough for branded companies. After starting, I undertook an extensive review of the business and expected future market, after which it was determined that in order to build a sustainable and competitive organisation, we needed to focus on areas where we could be competitive and win, and evolve our overall business model to be more efficient and effective than our peers. To be successful we did not need to be the biggest but the best in the areas where we competed. For example we plan to be #1 company in cardiovascular medicine in Thailand. As a pharmaceutical company operating in Thailand, we have differentiated ourselves in the market place by putting a real focus on people. For example, during the floods last year, we wanted to make sure we were more flexible and more generous than any other pharmaceutical company. We knew it would hit the bottom-line in an already tough year but we made the decision to put people first as more than half our employees were directly or indirectly affected by the worst floods in more than 50 years. Support of our staff included providing flexible working hours, giving interest free loans, paying for house repairs, paying for accommodation in all locations, and giving staff time off to volunteer to help out the community by, for example, cleaning flooded hospitals. We benchmarked ourselves vs. what our peers were doing to ensure that we were doing more for our people. As community support we raised more than two million baht through the global AZ Network by using online social media and asking each AZ employee around the world to donate 30 Baht (one dollar). Funds were donated to the Thai Red Cross for Flood relief and repair post floods. This was the first time such a global initiative had been done at AZ. In terms of achievement 2012 will be the first time in five years that we will achieve our sales target. In fact, not only will we achieve, but we will exceed target. We are the #1 country above target in Asia Pacific (in absolute terms and percentage). This is a great achievement for the Thai organisation. Also for the first time in AZ Thailand’s history

ASTRAZENECA THAILAND “TAKING CONTROL OF OUR FUTURE”
we won the Regional Vice-President Award for Leadership which the entire organisation deserves credit for. The changes that were started in 2011 were not easy including reducing my management team from 13 to 7 direct reports and proactively restructuring our field organisation to be more flexible with a new business model. Notably these changes were implemented during our annual people survey. However what impressed me about the leadership team and organisation is that we actually achieved our best annual people results in more than five years during this change with improvements in every single category. It was well managed, communicated and in reflection the organisation was ready for change. As we started this journey to build a sustainable and competitive organisation that was focused on caring for our people we branded this journey as “Taking Control of Our Future” especially with the uncertain external environment. I am very proud of what the Thailand organisation has been able to achieve and they should be proud of what they have accomplished in 2011 and 2012.
What do you have planned for the rest of your tenure? I’ve always known that I would be here for a limited time. I have accomplished most of my incoming goals and was recently reminded I am now the second most tenured incumbent Country President in Asia-Pacific. The company is well positioned and it would be fantastic to have a Thai leader for the country operations. There are so many talented local leaders that we need to make sure we create significant opportunities for them. In the meantime, I will continue to focus on developing the next generation of leaders and for these leaders to be flexible and adaptable enough to deal with this changing market, and to make good real-time decisions to achieve our goal of being sustainable and competitive. One recent decision was to invest in expanding our sales force to strengthen the foundation to be #1 in cardiovascular medicine by 2015.
14
www.swecham.com
Apart from helping with the floods, what other CSR projects is AZ engaged with? AZ is committed to being a strong community supporter of the Thai community. Support will come across a range of financial and non-financial programs. Many initiatives are initiated by staff and others are driven at a company level. We believe it’s important to involve staff and we are continuing our program to have staff participate in the worthy community projects so that we can give back to Thailand. We believe in access to our innovative drugs and for instance have patient access programs as part of our oncology portfolio.
What changes will take place in the Thai marketplace and how can AZ position itself in the changing environment? The pharmaceutical industry is very dynamic and going through significant change. These changes often come fast and as an industry we are often reacting to this change. All governments around the world, Thailand included, are facing increased financial pressures and this has placed pressure on healthcare budgets and expenditure. There are a broad set of measures that have been introduced looking at containing cost and these will continue. Recently, for example, the
government requested price reductions for drugs from all companies. Our goal as a global company is to continue to bring innovative and best in class drugs to the Thai people. AZ is best positioned by bringing high quality drugs that can deliver meaningful differences. While doing this we continue to find ways to be as efficient as organisation as possible and to be flexible with market changes. Importantly, we anticipated these now market changes and have been proactive by, for example, increasing our emphasis on our representatives carrying multiple products and understanding the dynamics of each account. We were the first to move to a multiple product model for key products in different therapeutic areas. Recently, a competitor Country President called me to say AZ had the most efficient and effective sales force in Thailand after commissioning a review of sales forces in Thailand. At the time we made the decision it was not easy being the first to make such a move but it’s important to evolve in a market that is constantly changing if we want to take control of our future.
How can the Thai population, which lives in an emerging economy, access essential AZ drugs, and what can the government here do to help? We have drugs on the national list of essential drugs (NLED) which all patients in Thailand can access but we also have several drugs which are not on the list yet (as they still have a waiting period and/or there are no generic equivalents). However we have worked with the government authorities to increase the availability of these treatments by developing a single and lower price for patients. As part of this process, many of our key products were successful in achieving this single pricing designation. This has made it easier for hospitals to order these drugs as they have achieved this designation. We provide a patient access program and also have a donation program based on requests that we receive. The government and industry need to continuously find new ways to help patients get the best treatment.
ERICSSON THAILAND: A SWEDISH MANAGEMENT SUCCESS STORY
Ericsson Thailand:
A Swedish Management
By Miklos Bolza
Success Story
S
ince arriving from Sweden, Mr Joacim Damgard has helped strengthen and focus Ericsson (Thailand) Ltd as President & Country Manager. His effective management strategies have bolstered company revenue, staff motivation and corporate vision. “My advice would be to build trust, to listen, and to create platforms for communication. Don’t force change but allow others to instigate change. Lead from behind rather than in front,” said Mr Damgard while talking about the keys to his success. Having never worked in Asia before, Mr Damgard joined Ericsson (Thailand) in January 2010 solely from a European standpoint. In this challenging new environment, success was mainly attributed to thinking differently, while fitting in with the culture and expectations of local staff. Since then, his fresh ideas and open approach have helped take Ericsson to new heights.
Industry Difficulties
Over the past five years, the biggest issue in Thailand’s telecommunications sector was the endless string of negotiations and unsuccessful auctions for the nation’s 2.1GHz 3G network licence. Without the necessary structural components in place, Mr Damgard still had to find a way to motivate his
16
www.swecham.com
staff and decide on a clear corporate direction. Without an official license or any government permission, it was difficult to conduct business in the regular manner. In order to succeed, Mr Damgard had to keep an open-minded point of view while looking at both a business and customer perspective. Focus was on leadership, motivation and corporate strategy. Additionally, he took every opportunity to learn about and contribute to the new culture and work environment.
Finding Direction
Before he could understand the company’s possibilities and capabilities, Mr Damgard had to gain the acceptance and trust of his staff. Here a strong leadership team was required which could only be gained through a culturallysensitive management approach. “Change in Thailand is not easy but I needed to make some changes because of the situation we were in,” Mr Damgard noted. Instead of making modifications directly, he chose to act from behind the scenes, working with a leadership team that was committed to the organisation and Mr Damgard as the head. The capability of open debate was also important, as making suggestions, giving opinions and asking questions would then
boost the self-confidence of the team. This group of staff also had to be aware of their capabilities and limitations to work together more efficiently for the company. To set up this well-oiled team, some major restructuring had to be done. 50% of the original leadership team was changed as Mr Damgard brought in new personnel who had the right attitude and mind-set. These alterations showed that he was willing to listen to his employees’ opinions through the leadership team as they formed the company’s direction. It also unlocked the team’s competence and willingness in a manner that would not have been possible otherwise. With a free expression of views, expectations and ideas, this then stimulated innovation in the company. “I’m not doing it for myself. I’m doing it for the business,” Mr Damgard said as he explained the reason for this major restructuring. These changes also boosted trust, allowing Mr Damgard to work closely with his team to achieve their corporate goals. In the Thai culture, getting the group’s views is important. Probing, asking for opinions and reaching a team conclusion are all essential to reaching goals and avoiding pitfalls. To save face, this open debate is done in private so that the team is seen to have one voice outside of the meeting room.

A workplace is a place where people spend a lot of time. If you don’t have a nice environment with plenty of fun, laughter and those more social things, then it’s a prison.
Connecting the Workplace
These open communication platforms were extended throughout Ericsson (Thailand) in the form of direct emails, focus groups, surveys and staff meetings. By giving employees the opportunity to express themselves, Mr Damgard managed to boost the morale of the company at a very difficult time. “It was important to show that I’m not the business. I’m simply part of the business,” Mr Damgard said. Because of this, he makes sure to interact with his staff regularly, visiting each department and keeping in touch with as many people as possible on a daily basis. This bonding is important, especially in times of crisis such as the Japanese tsunami of 2011. This event disrupted Ericsson’s supply chain and several major company projects for approximately six months. Open communication and clear leadership calmed down employees and boosted confidence while these issues were being solved. The same attitude served to stabilise the company during the Thai floods of 2011. While the office was moved to Pattaya, crisis management teams were set up and daily conference calls made to ensure that Bangkok employees still had homes, food, etc. By looking at the company as a whole, and by paying attention to
www.swecham.com
17
ERICSSON THAILAND: A SWEDISH MANAGEMENT SUCCESS STORY
the needs and ideas of his staff, Mr Damgard was able to strengthen the internal fabric of Ericsson (Thailand), engaging and stimulating his employees during some very difficult times.
A Better Business Strategy
With a strong leadership team behind him, Mr Damgard had to decide where Ericsson (Thailand) was headed in the future. “Focus and strategy are really about saying no,” he noted. At the time, the company was promoting a great many products and services. Mr Damgard decided to bring the business back to its core strengths, building on what the organisation was already well-known for. Thus, the focus switched back to 2G and 3G radiobased stations and their surrounding networks. This gave Ericsson (Thailand) a clear vision, taking away many of the disturbances that had been slowing it down previously.
Growing Pains
Through of all these initiatives, Mr Damgard then secured two major deals in 2011. Overall, the company’s total revenue has significantly grown since he started in 2010. Because of this rapid growth, additional recruitment was necessary and Ericsson (Thailand) grew from 200
18
www.swecham.com
to 500 staff. Maintaining communication and motivation was difficult at this time as new employees were recruited and inducted into the company. As a result, motivation and engagement started to drop during the spring of 2011. The solution to this was to rectify the work-life balance and alleviate stress by hiring even more people. A “Healthy Life, Healthy Work” programme was also set up. This then led to a more relaxed office environment for the company’s staff.
Customer Engagement
Another solution to the dropping survey results was the creation of new client engagement initiatives. Arrangements were made for staff, mostly from Ericsson’s back office, to be taken around customer sites so they could see the real-world implications of what they were doing and gain a sense of scope. As counterparts from each company met for the first time, employees gained more knowledge and insight than if they were simply shown a slide-show or PowerPoint presentation.
Giving Back to the Community
Ericsson (Thailand) also increased its focus on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). During the 2011 floods in Thailand, Ericsson’s staff members
were still committed to their clients. In fact, the best gained internal recognition within the company as a result. Employees also volunteered to deliver food to flood victims. This served two purposes: it boosted staff morale as they gave back to society and it reflected the values of the organisation. “We are a part of the world. We are a global citizen with the means to make a positive contribution,” Mr Damgard said as he explained Ericsson’s viewpoint. This attitude is a prime reason why people choose to work for Ericsson. This kind of employee branding attracts employees who care about the next generation and want to give something back when it comes to the environment and sustainability.
A Focus on Fun
Mr Damgard also believes in creating a relaxed, friendly atmosphere within the workplace. With initiatives such as Casual Friday and water fights during Thai New Year, he hopes to continually boost staff motivation and engagement. “A workplace is a place where people spend a lot of time. If you don’t have a nice environment with plenty of fun, laughter and those more social things, then it’s a prison. You need to realise that the boundaries between home life and work life are merging,” Mr Damgard advised.

he next phase of the NishaVille area in Huay Yang in Prachuap Kirikhan province is now ready. The new phase, NishaVille Residence, includes 36 condo and 6 luxury villa residences for sale. The whole NishaVille area is a beachfront residential resort village in very pristine waters developed by Kij Development. The project has been awarded Best Boutique Developer Thailand Property Awards 2008 and Best Villa Development Hua Hin 2009 and already counts many Swedish residents. Thai Sweden Review talks to Lars-Åke Persson, the Swedish sales manager of the project. “Huay Yang is simply unique,” says Lars-Åke Persson, who is no newcomer to Huay Yang. Since 2005 he has in various ways been involved in brokerage of houses and apartments in the area. “Initially I was the customer service manager on site for Thailandfastigheter during 2005-2007, followed by an own company during 2008-2012. Since a few months back I am the sales manager at NishaVille,” he explains.
Elaborating on what makes Huay Yang so special, he explains: “For me, it has a lot to do with the people here. They are wonderful - both the locals and the foreigners residing here. And then of course the setting – so beautiful – and far away from the tourist destinations crowds and nightlife buzz.” “Here you find a relaxing, laidback lifestyle with lots of life quality. No vendors on the beach that stretches for miles. The coconut palm trees, the excellent service available, the social life among the residents… I could go on,” he says.
Strong Swedish connection
Huay Yang enjoys a strong connection to Sweden as somewhat of a Swedish village. The nearby resort town of Hua Hin north of Huay Yang is also very popular as residence and vacation destination among Swedes and other Northerners. The boom of the area was in 2003 – 2007. Since the financial crisis in 2008, the development has slowed down – but far from standing still, Lars-Åke Persson explains.

NISHAVILLE IS GROWING
“The last few years have been more wait-and-see but we actually see really good buyer interest all the time. Those who decide to invest are those wanting to fulfil their dream and first and foremost see it as an investment in their own wellbeing.” “I think the players that have come as far as having their projects more or less completed have good opportunities to sell. There are many Scandinavians wanting something on their own and they should not risk buying something that takes long time to complete,” he adds.
NishaVille Residences
The new NishaVille Residences project has something really good on offer for those seeking best possible quality in the best possible environment. The resort environment offers a setting that elicits calmness and harmony. The beachfront position with a temple and national park as neighbours combined, guarantees that this package remains intact. On-site restaurants, a shop, a spa, conference facilities and activities enhance the overall offer in enabling homeowners to earn rental incomes. Within the resort there will also be smaller bungalows in the future enabling also larger groups to book this resort.
Factors for growth
According to Lars-Åke Persson, the

world economy and national Thai politics are the main factors that affect NishaVille’s opportunities to sell and continue developing the plans for the resort village. “A stable economy and relative calm on the political front will boost buyer confidence. On a 300-kilometre long coastline this is the bridgehead with an established colony of “Western settlers”. NishaVille and Huay Yang have great potential for the future,” he says. The main target groups are Scandinavians but also other nationalities where individuals are seeking what NishaVille and Huay Yang can offer and find this environment appealing. To reach new and prospective clients, he is using in particular the Internet and NishaVille’s own web site. “Quality, tranquillity, harmony and quality of life directly connected to the beach. That is our main selling point: An investment for the future, both financially and for one’s own wellbeing,” he says.
Investment return
NishaVille phase one is also operated as hotel (NishaVille Resort & Spa). How is the revenue stream for the home investors who have opted to join the rental pool so far? “Revenues have increased from year to year and it has been a process
where these things take time to build. Some groups wanting to book were not able to, due to not enough capacity but it will get better now when also the apartments are finalised. So in the years to come the rentals can reach the level one could expect,” Lars-Åke Persson replies. “Tourism as such is likely to increase from Hua Hin and southwards but the distance speaks for that Huay Yang won’t see too fast development. Most services and facilities needed are already available today. As for shopping we have Hua Hin at a perfectly safe distance when one wants to experience the anthill with a wide range of shops, dining etc.” Personally, Lars-Åke Persson would not like to see tourism and property development in the area beyond what the special charm of the area can sustain. “I hope Huay Yang won’t turn into the way things have in some other places - with too fast exploitation,” he says. “Huay Yang is a place for resort homes and apartments where we should not see hotels and resorts get established for mass tourism and charter trips. There could emerge more areas like the one today, but I am confident Huay Yang as it is will maintain its current charm and increase in popularity.”
SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE
THE WORLD HAS CHANGED a bit since we started back in 1937. Over the years, we’ve helped nations increase their readiness in a world that constantly poses new challenges for corporations and civil security authorities alike. And we couldn’t have done it without change.
www.saabgroup.com
So we’ve changed technology. And it’s changed us. There’s really just one thing that remains the same. After more than 70 years, we are still challenging the laws of nature and pushing the boundaries of the possible. Some things never change.

Myanmar A fantastic country and a great people which offers huge business opportunities in all sectors but also bigger than normal risks. Those are some of the conclusions from the fact finding trip to Myanmar of the Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce. By Kim Birkkjaer Lund

W
hen is the right time to enter business in Myanmar? Foreign investors are queuing up for getting into business in Myanmar. Japan has been eager to get in with massive investments after the Myanmar government has opened the door and committed itself to democracy and China has been there for years, not paying much attention to absence of fundamental human rights. Has Swedish companies slept over when not a single
Swedish company has own branch in Myanmar? The answer is as simple as it is short: No. And maybe it is still too soon, according to Peter Björk, Executive director for Thai-Sweden Chamber of Commerce (TSCC). “I am totally convinced, especially after this trip, that there is no need to rush. Actually we asked some of our speakers with Myanmar experience, if it still is too early to get in with investments,” says Peter Björk It was his second trip to Myanmar.

He believes that it is wise to go there and makes contacts, but warns against being caught by the hype to be first. The foreign investment bill was not yet approved by the parliament when TSCC was visiting (The parliament approved the bill 1. November and it still hasn’t been approved by the President by our deadline) and lack of legislation is not the only obstruction Peter Björk sees for first movers. “A lot of things are still missing: Office spaces, homes for expats, infrastructure, banking and finance
systems for overseas transactions, education systems just to mention some.”
Office prices doubled
10 persons representing a mix of small, medium and big companies, the Swedish Foreign Trade Association and TSCC participated in the fact finding tour. They spend four days visiting companies and the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and had three experts giving seminars on specifics such as “tax and legislation”, “The real estate
market” and on the overall perspective of investing. “You can have business seminars in Bangkok talking about doing business in Myanmar but it is quite different to actually be there and meet local business representatives.” The expert in real estate, Anthony Picon from Colliers, told the participants that the supply of office space in Yangon equals one single skyscraper in Sathorn, Bangkok, and that prices had more than doubled from 30 USD per square meter to 75 USD in a year, and he expected

business has been protected against competition for 60 years, making some nervous for opening to much up. “They are welcoming foreign investments and they are open to foreigners but at the same time they want to protect their own business,” tells Peter Björk.
No proper banking system
One of the invited expert speakers Luc De Waegh surprised with a very personal and committed speak on Myanmar’s sincerity in its wish for becoming a part of the world after years of isolation and their eagerness for development. It was a speech in line with the participant’s discussion on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a part of the right investment strategy. “The CSR perspective seems to be as important for Myanmar as it is for our members. After Myanmar has been locked out from the world for decades, we have to see ourselves as partners and maybe even helpers who care about both the country and its people. Companies main purpose is of course to
For Peter Björk it seems like Myanmar wants to build their own model for foreign investment and not trying to copy Singapore, Thailand nor Vietnam models. One of the big obstacles for investments and business is the lack of a proper banking system for overseas payments. “The banking system isn’t up to standards making it difficult to transfer money in and out of the country in a proper manner. 800 companies in Myanmar use Singapore banks to be able to do business and transfer money.” This is however set to be improved soon when new regulations for the banking sector will be launched. There is also some reluctance. Local

make money but good CSR politics is a long term investment.”
A tangible offer
Some has asked why TSCC made their own visit to Myanmar instead of waiting for a high profile visit as the Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt’s visit in November, but as a local Thai-Swedish chamber Peter Björk find it important to give the chamber’s member tangible offers. “When we started planning this trip, there were no specific plans for a top level visit. Now a Swedish delegation headed by the Prime Minister goes there and that is fantastic, and of course it doesn’t compete with what we are doing.” Peter Björk considers the fact finding visit a great success. Several participants had separate meetings with either established partners, as the represents from Volvo who met with their local importer, others met with potential future partners. “I am convinced that we achieved our goals with this trip. We got first-hand knowledge and we made new contacts. We will certainly be back with more initiatives on Myanmar for our members.”

espite the fact that Thailand’s first H&M store has just opened in Bangkok, the Swedish brand is clearly not new to Bangkok shoppers. This can be seen from the success of the recent grand opening of H&M’s Thailand flagship store, which was marked with a large crowd of Bangkok shoppers queuing outside the shopping mall in the rain hours before it opened. It looks as if the brand was something that Bangkok shoppers had long been waiting for.
H&M Opening in Thailand
In a two-storey flagship store of over 3,200 sqm at Siam Paragon, H&M celebrated its grand opening in style in the presence of Thailand’s best-known celebrities and notables in the fashion industry who were treated to freeflow sparkling wine and canapés while peeking through a range of the brand’s collections, including the latest collection from Autumn/Winter 2012. At the opening event, Thailand’s top DJs, DJ Buddha and DJ Plerny, spun upbeat music including R&B to HipHop to boost the high-energy shopping atmosphere. H&M has expanded exponentially in

recent years with almost 2,600 stores spreading across 48 markets worldwide. In Asia, the brand has stores in Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and now Thailand. After the success of opening its first store in Thailand, H&M opened its second store in the kingdom on 10 October at The Mall Bangkapi. The third H&M store will soon open at CentralWorld in Ratchaprasong.
Hthai Company, a franchiser of H&M Thailand and Indonesia
Owned by Singaporean businessman J.S. Gill, Hthai Company is a franchiser of H&M in Thailand and Indonesia. The company plans to open the first H&M store in Jakarta in the beginning of 2013. Apart from H&M, Mr. Gill operates about 300 shops ranging from sports, fashion to active lifestyle brands such as Billabong from Australia and Nautica from the U.S. The opening of H&M in Thailand is a part of the company’s plan to open 300 stores this fiscal year. According to the company’s website, H&M’s concept is to offer customers unbeatable value by offering fashion and quality at the best price. The brand is also known for its fashionable designs
which are loved by fashionistas all around the globe.
H&M’s Global Head of Design
Swedish Anne-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s Head of Design based, leads the design of H&M globally. Based in Sweden, she shares her views on H&M’s fashion and the launch in Thailand. “It is very exciting to see so many eager customers waiting for us to open our first store, and to see that our business concept also works so well in Thailand,” says Anne-Sofie Johansson. Anne took an interest in fashion since an early age. In fact, she has been a customer of H&M brand since her childhood. While she was studying in fashion and advertising in Stockholm, she worked at the H&M store in Sweden. “When I was a little girl, I asked my mother to take me to shop at H&M. I’ve always enjoyed the shopping experience and always been interested in fashion. My first job was actually at H&M,” says Anne. Aiming to reach the whole family including women, men, kids and teenagers, Anne says that H&M’s designs are created at the Head office in

Sweden, covering everything from the basic items to the latest fashion. “Though the design is done in Sweden, we take inspiration from around the world. Fashion today is global and we offer trends and fashion for the global market,” says Anne. Nevertheless, the Swedishness of H&M lies in the company’s management and approach. “We have a flat organisation here. Our core value is ‘keep it simple’ which I think is one of our keys to success,” says Anne. Anne reveals that the latest H&M fashion is the highly anticipated ‘Masion Martin Margiela’ collection to be launched globally including in Thailand on 15 November 2012. The Masion Martin Margiela collection offers over 100 avant-garde pieces such as draped silhouettes, hitched up skirts, soft turtleneck jumpers draped loosely at the seam, and accessories like skinny belts, wedge boots with clear Perspex heels and necklaces with hair lock pendants. “I know that there are many fashion conscious people in Thailand, and I am very happy that we have finally arrived,” says Anne.

Despite its successful business expansion, H&M has recently faced accusations that it uses ‘slave labour.’ In October this year, a documentary broadcasted on Swedish television channel TV4 alleged that H&M subcontractor’s factory in Cambodia paid its workers such low wages that they had to borrow money to buy food. The programme reported that workers were paid a monthly salary of 500 kronor (approximately 58 Euros or USD 75) for a 70-hour work week, according to news agency TT. However, H&M’s Chief Executive Karl-Johan Persson objected to the allegation. “It’s completely incorrect,” he said to Swedish Daily Expressen. Swedish TV4 was invited by H&M to Cambodia, where they witnessed textile workers demonstrating for higher pay. “We encourage workers to negotiate their salaries with employers,” Mr. Persson said. “We want all workers to be paid more and that’s why we pressure politicians to raise the minimum salary to a living wage.”

SWEDISH CHARTER TOURISM ECO-SUSTAINABLE
Swedish Charter Tourism Eco-Sustainable 32
www.swecham.com
TSCC - THAI SWEDISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Swedish charter tourism companies Ving / Thomas Cook Northern Europe and Fritidsresor are leading the drive for more environmentally friendsly tourism in Thailand by pushing their hotels to become eco certified and eco-sustainable. By Joakim Persson
T
wo of the international travel groups operating in Sweden, Fritidsresor and Ving, have been addressing environmental concerns for a number of years. Both have lately intensified their efforts. The way the tourism industry thinks and acts is on the verge of a breakthrough. As a tangible result, one of Ving’s hotels in Thailand, Sunwing Resort Kamala Beach, has been awarded the first ever EU Ecolabel certification in Asia. And Fritidsresor is mentioned multiple times in a new EU commission report on ‘Best Environmental Management Practice in the Tourism Sector’ for its fuel efficiency and environmental efforts within its Blue Village hotels. Ving and Fritidsresor are no boutique operators. Ving, with 660 000 customers yearly, is part of the international travel group Thomas Cook Group. Fritidsresor is Sweden’s largest charter trip operator with a market share of more than 30 per cent and part of the world’s largest travel group, TUI Travel.
Sustainable tourism?
Both Ving / Thomas Cook and Fritidsresor are a bit frustrated, that
other tourism industry operators are paying so little attention to making tourism more sustainable. Mr. Fredrik Lindblom, the Sustainable Development Manager of Fritidsresor says: “…we are doing much more than many others in the tourism industry to move forward with the sustainability issue. Just compare with for example hotels. com or scheduled airlines that also offer hotels. Are they acting at all? And yet 75 per cent of Swedes travel with other means of transportation than charter on their overseas trips,” he says. Ms. Themis Kriara, Ving / Thomas Cook Northern Europe comments similarly: “We work continuously to reduce our environmental impact from our products. Except from the other leading charter operators in the Nordic region (e.g. Fritidsresor and Apollo) this differs from some of our largest competitors on the market! Our products are based on online purchases made from one’s home, the customers flying with our own airline which is the industry’s most environmentally friendly (Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia) and also that the customers are offered to stay in one of our eco-labeled concept hotels.” In one respect, neither Ving
nor Fritidsresor see themselves as promoters of sustainable tourism – that is when it comes to their use of aviation. “In our view there is no business within charter tourism that can live up to that principle at the moment,” says Ms. Themis Kriara, Sustainability, Health & Safety Manager Resorts & Hotels, Ving / Thomas Cook Northern Europe. “Transportation is without comparison the largest environmental factor, and especially when aviation is used. And given the lifecycle of planes we would need to leap into the future in order to achieve sustainable flights,” she adds.
Trendsetter and role model
Both travel companies are nevertheless intensifying and increasing their own environmental efforts. “By acting and putting up reasonable demands in the right direction we are showing that we have an ambition about something better,” says Fritidsresor’s Fredrik Lindblom. “For example, we [Fritidsresor] actively help our hotel partners to become environmentally certified according to ISO 14001. Blue Village Exotic hotels have in the startup phase been offered an energy inventory and financing of the ISO14001 certification

SWEDISH CHARTER TOURISM ECO-SUSTAINABLE process plus consultancy assistance at our expense.” “Last year 27 % of our customers stayed in hotels with some form of sustainability certification. Within a year from now this number will have increased to over 50 % thanks to our commitment to help our suppliers. How many other tour operators can boast having such high numbers?” Fritidsresor’s Frederik Lindblom asks. By having sustainability as one of three main aims for the business, Fritidsresor aims for a business model where economic, social and environmental factors impact the bottom line. “But things take time. And it’s almost a philosophical or national/ global question. All three are important – but remember we are a commercial company. And being sustainable also incorporates being profitable – otherwise there can be no companies left anymore.”
Fritidsresor: Hotel certification
For Fritidsresor, environmental certification of the hotel partners especially the Blue Village and Blue Star hotels – is the main step to achieve sustainabilty. The hotels are educated
34
www.swecham.com
via visits in how to reduce among other things energy, water and chemicals consumption and thus save money. “The hotels almost immediately show decreasing costs in connection to becoming certified and the total saving for our fifteen Blue Village hotels amount to hundreds of thousand Euros,” says Fritidsresor’s Mr. Fredrik Lindblom. Customer feedback also shows that the certified hotels are most appreciated and the one enjoying most repeat guests. These are seen as having the best orderliness, the safest and managed in a good way. Fritidsresor began with systematic certification of the Blue Village hotels in Europe and Turkey in 2008. Prior to the existence of any global sustainability certifications they had a code of conduct since the 1990’s for hotels. “But Rome wasn’t built in one day; working systematically step by step is the method that works best. We must remember that we are dealing also with other cultures where things are often viewed differently,” Mr. Lindblom says. “When there are financial incentives the transition will be the fastest one. It’s more difficult to convince hotels about installing for example solar panels
at the hotel when the energy price is a tenth of what we are paying per kWh in Sweden,” the Sustainable Development Manager points out. Fritidsresor has sustainability contracts with all its hotels partner and continuosly controls on its own that these follow the demands. Suppliers are encouraged to consider implementation of an international environmental management system and join Travelife. Nevertheless they must self-assess and then work to improve their respective sustainability performance. In practice there are however challenges – reports Fritidsresor – regarding implementation, training and development and to put up demands within this since the tour operator does not own or operate any of the hotels. Fritidsresor favours ISO 14001, as it demands continuous improvement. As an environmental management system it contributes to systematic control of environmental conditions and ensures continued improvements. So can hotels in that programme keep up for instance reducing consumption or emissions? “Hotels are usually at different stages depending on local
TSCC - THAI SWEDISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
circumstances (garbage collection or not, water shortage or not etc.),” is the reply. “ISO 14001 always look at the particular property and where it is at the moment of certification and puts up demands based on that point of departure. Therefore hotels may have reached different stages. When it comes to energy the road ahead of course means reducing fossil fuel consumption. This is at least what we preach to our partners,” says Fredrik Lindblom. Within Fritidsresor’s Blue Village Exotic selection, Khao Lak Seaview and Anantara Si Kao are two hotels in Thailand with international certifications.
Ving: Hotel certification
Ving Resor / Thomas Cook Northern Europe Resorts & Hotels also work on environmental certification of its own hotels Sunwing Resort. This effort has been ongoing since the 1990’s. Ving Resor / Thomas Cook Northern Europe have also tried to influence partners to operate more sustainably. In 1995, Sunwing Resorts initiated a unique program, called “100 steps towards a better environment” followed by the
application of the Nordic Swan criteria for accommodation. Nowadays Ving / Thomas Cook are applying the EU Ecolabel certification – which focuses on the use of energy, water, and chemicals and the minimisation of waste – for all their resorts. Their own Sunwing Resort hotels were the first in Europe to get EU certification. “Our environmental initiatives are constantly reviewed and developed to keep our hotels associated with the best environmental practices. However, these efforts take a very long time in order to be understood firstly from the staff and then from all stakeholders that are involved. It is a continuous process,” Themis Kriara explains. “Sunwing recognizes the importance of staff involvement. Without informed, perceptive staff the environmental initiatives would not have developed. There must be realism within theoretical idealism. Practical actions through departemental documented procedures in addition to yearly staff training, are leading Sunwing towards more environmentally sympathetic hotel
operations,” she explains. “A key part of our approach is to raise awareness among our employees of the environmental impacts of our business and the actions that can be taken to reduce them.” The EU Ecolabel’s criteria should be implemented on all Sunwing Resort outside EU under 2012. Ving / Thomas Cook Northern Europe has also been working with Travelife certification since 2010. Travelife is an international certification scheme that provides guidelines and measurement systems for the travel industry. By 2012 all Sunwing Resorts have been awarded with the Travelife Gold approval. Ving has also requested that accredited, independent Travelife inspectors perform the reviewing of their hotels. According to Ving / Thomas Cook, the two certification schemes are different. “Travelife has, in contrast to the EU Ecolabel, managed to create a basis for comparison of hotel products, and thereby creating a greater transparency for customers who want to buy sustainability-customized trips,” says Ms.

Themis Kriara of Ving / Thomas Cook. “Unfortunately EU Ecolabel focuses more on environmental performance and less on social efforts, so it’s possibly one of the reasons why the programme lags behind with respect to Travelife, which is increasingly becoming widely used,” Ms Themis Kriara adds. Ving replies on how sustainability and environmental concern are part of its DNA. “Being part of the corporation’s strategic foundation, they are among other things defined by that the considerations should be brought into the decision-making processes and as part of larger strategic considerations. But it’s of course an area that can be developed, and which demands continuous focus in order to in order to become established.”

FIRST IN ASIA:SUNWING KAMALA WAS AWARDED EU ECOLABEL CERTIFICATION
First in Asia:
Sunwing Kamala Was Awarded
EU Ecolabel Certification

TSCC - THAI SWEDISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
General Manager Johan Magnusson, Sunwing Resort Kamala Beach, shares the details of how Sunwing Resort Kamala Beach in June 2012 was awarded the first ever EU Ecolabel certification in Asia. By Joakim Persson
I
n order to become EU Ecolabel certified in June 2012, Sunwing Resort Kamala Beach had to go through every single little detail and verify it all by taking photos and signing off to apply for the certification, explains the hotel’s GM Johan Magnusson, who is also the resort’s sustainability manager. To conduct the actual audit, four accredited auditors from the European Competent Body then came and stayed for four days and audited everything in the resort. “We qualified based on living up to as much as local conditions allowed us to do,” Johan Magnusson says. “It’s not about having your own water supply system or a large compost – it’s more about the small little details; how you save on water and electricity and how you recycle and take responsibility. And taking the lead and showing one’s employees and the municipality that this is the way we want to go forward.” Reduce is one of the key words: never do or consume anything unnecessarily. “It was like this: Have you stopped using disposable packaging? It started on that level,” Johan Magnusson
explains. Drinking water, sugar, ketchup, shower cream, shampoo etc. cannot use such packaging but instead refill systems. Sunwing has phased out packaging completely in rooms, restaurants etc. to reduce the amount of waste generated. Some chemicals that must be used for cleaning the pool and in the laundry are strictly monitored and biodynamic alternatives are used wherever possible, such as the Effective Microorganisms for the cleaning process in the hotel’s wastewater treatment plant. Electricity consumption is also closely watched with an ongoing strive to reduce it. The hotel saves energy by utlizing for instance timers and automatically switching off lights. “For low energy lamps, there was a minimum and then one should have the ambition to increase that amount,” Johan Magnusson says.
Involve the guests
The saving efforts also mean significant guest involvement; inviting them to contribute to the hotels’ actions and achievements by for example engaging them in environmentally friendly habits. Guests encounter an array of

messages that encourage them to partake, such as: ‘Please contribute to better the environment by removing the key card’ inside the rooms. Housekeeping is instructed to remove any key card they find in the slot in an empty room. Each room gets only four towels for guests’ stay, with a sign informing that these will be exchanged only per request. Guests are informed they must place the bed linen and the towels in a special basket if they wish to have new ones. The garbage sorting is very visible on the resort with clearly marked dustbins for glass, paper, plastic etc. nearby the pool area. Beach cleaning takes place daily and guests are invited to join once a week. As part of the activities for guests Sunwing also offers a kind of environmental school - Lollo & Bernie’s Happy Planet - for children in different age groups, which is very popular among parents with small children. They are provided with a sketchbook with cartoons and environmental topics. In this activity they look for garbage and learn how to recycle etc. The fundamentals for being environmentally friendly are in place at Sunwing in Kamala and yet it is just the beginning. “Of course we can do better and we’ll improve. Now that we have been certified, it’s not that we are best in class, but having achieved the demands put on hotels in Europe, as a minimum, and then taking things further from here,” says Johan.

Eco-pioneers by Phuket standards
Ving also ensures continuous improvements by having goals in their framework in order to ensure that they always move forward in improvement in relation to minimum requirements defined by the programme. The Sunwing sister hotel on Bang Tao beach is an example of where a lot more needs to be done - its consumption of electricity and water is the highest, and in fact much higher than all other Sunwing properties. “We have started very recently to work with environmental practices on our hotels in Thailand. Therefore it’s expected that they will need more time to reach the levels of the other hotels,”
says Themis Kriara from Ving / Thomas Cook Northern Europe. Johan Magnusson hopes Sunwing Resort can be a role model together with others in the forefront and show other smaller hotels and local people. “With the implementation of the EU-Ecolabel scheme in all our resorts and its certification, we guide the local stakeholders to apply the correct and sound initiatives and actions for environmental protection and by the independent third party objective audits taking place we safeguard its correct implementation. We are convinced that many more will follow,” comments Themis Kriara on how they can influence on local level, steering tourism on a green path.
