Along, long time ago, in the very beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was empty and shapeless, there was darkness all around, and God’s Spirit moved over the waters.

He set each and every star in place, and they began to shine their radiant light throughout the vast night sky. That was the fourth day.

The next day, God filled the sea and the sky with living things. Crabs and clownfish, porpoises and pufferfish, swordfish and sea turtles swirled and splashed in the water. Bursts of color filled the air as cardinals and toucans took flight. The very first songs of canaries and cockatiels were carried on an afternoon breeze. Eagles and ospreys built their nests high above as God said, “Multiply and fill the earth.” That was the fifth day.

Finally, God said, “Let there be creatures to fill the earth.” Just like that, animals large and small creeped and crawled over the land. Antelope leapt, and armadillos waddled. Mice scurried, and monkeys swung from tree to tree.

Kangaroos jumped, and cows chewed the grasses of their lush, new home. God looked around and saw that it was all good. He had created a vibrant new world, brimming with colorful plants and playful creatures—but day six wasn’t over yet!

God then said, “Let’s make people, to look like us and to be in charge of the creatures of the land, air, and sea.” With those
