A friend like you “I will lead the blind by ways they have not know, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them.” -ISAIAH 42:16

have a friend like you is worth more than having fame or many treasures res in the world. Friendship with you is a treasure in itself. Most friends come naturally, even easily, in youth. Those Disraeli called “magic school friendships.” Some come not so easily, especially in later times of transition and trouble. Fewer come during the mature years. Our friendship contains them all. Once, on the phone, when I elaborated on the beauty of our friendship, you just remarked, “Yeah, someone needs to be deluded enough to think you’re terrific!” We laughed with 10,000 miles between us. Another time you wrote, “May God keep you from being any more foolish than absolutely necessary.” Friendship is not hindered by language or geographical borders or social barriers. Sometimes friends are their best at a distance. You are. Why are we friends? Neither of us is especially great or virtuous. I guess it’s because we have walked some miles of adversity together and then been able to hold each other up. We have struck a common chord, a language of soul that makes our present separate journeys more bearable. There have even been times when we have managed to convince each

other of what great geniuses we were, and sometimes we have taken the risk of telling each other how annoying we were. Friends can be totally honest with each other. And they are free to set personal boundaries. Let’s continue to bring out the best and most real in each other. I promise to be a friend to you the same way you have been a friend to me. Let’s continue always standing up for and believing the best about each other. A friendship is a mighty defense, and as long as we stick together, we can take on the world.

“No distance of place or lapse of time can lessen friendship of those who are thoroughly persuded of each other’s worth.” -ROBERT SOUTHEY

Freedom WE FORCE NO DOORS IN FRIENDSHIP. BUT LIKE THE CHRIST IN Revelation, we STAND REVERENTLY AT THE DOOR without, to KNOCK. AND ONLY IF THE DOOR BE opened from within, MAY WE WELCOME IN TO SUP WITH OUR FRIEND AND HE WITH US. THE GLORY OF FRIENDSHIP IS NOT THE OUTSTRETCHED HAND, NOR THE KINDLY SMILE, NOR THE JOY OF companionship. It IS THE SPIRITUAL INSPIRATION THAT COMES TO ONE WHEN HE DISCOVERS THAT SOMEONE ELSE BELIEVES IN HIM AND IS WILLING TO TRUST HIM WITH HIS FRIENDSHIP. MY FRIENDS HAVE COME UNSOUGHT. THE GREAT GOD GAVE THEM TO ME.

-Emerson
